My sons Birthday is next weekend so i assembled his trike this week. It is a HF all terrain trike, better yet its red! He has a fascination with and can pick the symbol out in a pic so I ordered some decals from Terry and this is what i came up with. I think he will like it

Some of you may remember me mentioning a very special WH not too long after I joined RedSquare that was purchased brand new by an elderly friend of mine who was the one who got me to looking for my first WH. Well after several months of waiting I was finally able to go pick it up today. Ray couldn't remember the model, only that it was a WH that he bought new sometime in the 70s with a tiller...turned out to be a C-141. She should start and run with a little patience and tinkering, but will be awhile before she's up and working again...needs 4 new tires, new gas tank, and I have a feeling the 8 speed is shot (no oil, rust flakes on the dipstick, & won't shift between lo/hi or into 2nd/3rd) still I'm very excited to finally have this one home to my stable. Now I will quit with the senseless rambling and get on to what y'all really want...

Directly opposite the two bolts you have mounted there will be 2 holes in the frame on the other side. They should align with threaded holes that go up into the engine oil pan. (If you have the correct pan). Bolts go through the frame into the oil pan

Thanks so much gentlemen. You all get a non autographed picture of DougC to enjoy or throw tomato's at and you can also print it and use it as a dart board............

For years I have been struggling with the brake on my Wheel Horse 1067. Forward motion down hill takes left leg full force to stop and reverse motion down hill is impossible to stop. So I did a little research and ended up buying a new brake lining from RMaynard (Bob) here on Red Square. Instructions with it are simple and they work. Put the brake shoe and new lining on this morning (used Goop to attach the lining to the shoe). What a difference! Stops on a dime, on a hill, forward and reverse. Thanks, Bob !!

That sure is looking like a short frame , square hood. Is that an 8 hp Kohler?? Maybe 855, 856. 857...would be years 1965, 1966, 1967. Show us a picture of the dash...that would help.

I'm tired of the grass clipping blowing out from under the front of my SD 42" mower deck! SOOO, this weekend I'm installing a 3.5" wide piece of SS with a very small lip (facing inward) on the inside front on the deck shell. It will be only about a 3/4" to 1" below the the existing front lip. The deck is about a 1966/67 vintage mounted on my 1979 C-101. I'll report back on the success or the lack there of. Now, if only we could get some rain here in northern IL

Hey gang. Got pwr and cable back THUR. Sorry, should have checked in sooner. We are very lucky here. The Beast lives in a garage at 11FT, my old trailer is at 25FT, but surrounded by 65FT tall FL Long Leaf Pines. NO DAMAGE, NO FLOODING!!! With packing up stuff and getting out, then getting back in, my ticker is workin pretty hard. Nitro patches on top of each other!! LOL Things starting to get back to normal here, I know we have some other guys further south, and a few in Houston as well. Hope they all were at least as fortunate as us!!

Does that mean I can't read anything about a 520h because I don't have one now. I had a vary nice one and sold it. so I should at least be able to peek at the post. Or does that make me a has been ??? Or a wanna be has been ??? I'm confused I think I'll take a nap

Sorry Searcher but Richard is correct. They even sold different sized thermostat replacment orifices to get the maximum power out of an engine without cooking it. And I have seen engines overheat because there was no stat or orifice in place
  12. 4 points
I know what a thermostat is for! People would remove the thermostat with the intention of gaining increased coolant flow and enhanced cooling. This was a fallacy because the flow rate would exceed laminar rates and become turbulent. What was needed to allow proper coolant flow was a restricting orifice in place of the thermostat.

No worries Jeff! My Dad rode up with Emory and I too. It's been a really good day. Maybe our paths will cross again soon! Get some rest - we're wiped out!!!!!! Hey Richard. Not 100% sure, but I think the c-195 went around $900 and the 1054 in the $600 range. I had planned to bid on both, but they were too rich for my blood!

WOW Mike...that is really cool. You gotta love Terry for doing the stickers. He really knows how to make a project special. I think you should make a larger size so you can ride with him...or me at the show.

The footrests were another item I had a few attempts at before finishing up with something that looked right in comparison with the rest of the build. One pair looked too long and narrow, another try ended up with the fold overs not being deep enough. Fairly quick to mark out and make so not too much hair pulled out. Again, made from the scrap 1mm alloy panels. The first attempts found a use elsewhere after being cut up. How to make the fenders. ? Simply bending up on the brake press wasn't thought viable due to the curves at each end, although I now think it could have been done with a bit of NON press work included. Also the corners would need alloy welding etc. Another possibility was making a plug and molding in fiber glass. I decided to make these using built up layers of plasticard sheet reinforced with alloy. I already had a good stock of this plasticard. This resulted in very strong fenders. The plastic, welded together with liquid polystyrene cement, was thick enough to sand the curves on ends and sides. The alloy inserts were a very tight fit after making a few short trial sections to get the bends in the correct place. Also bolted at the corners although they wouldn't come out easily. The top of each footrest slides into the slot at the front of the fenders and will be bolted in place when finished.

I have to add my opinon as I have before in these threads : Don't put anything in your fuel tank but GASOLINE . Pure , non-oxygenated gasoline of the correct octane rating for your compression ratio . Products claiming to be a "fuel injector cleaner" or "upper cylinder lubricant" are ( in my opinion ) complete nonsense . Ever pour gasoline on a dirty item to clean it ? Works pretty good huh ? I'll bet it does the same thing in your fuel system without any help . As for the "upper cylinder lubricant " fantasy ... How can something that has been exploded in a combustion chamber lubricate ...anything . All these products do ( and again this is my own opinion ) is make carbon deposits that stick between ring lands and to the tops on pistons / valve faces ( and yes may get caught in a valve seat ) .

Up to a point. It has been a LONG time since my Fluid Dynamics classes, but as I recall it when fluid speed increases there comes a point at which flow goes from laminar (in a straight line) to turbulent, at this point the turbulent flow actually apposes the applied force as seen in @Ed Kennell chart. All of us motor heads had thought that if we removed the thermostat from the engine in a water cooled engine the increased flow would provide better cooling, but it didn't because the coolant moved to fast through the radiator to allow for heat transfer to occur. But, that is the study of thermodynamics; and that can be a very heated subject.

I could not confirm if the above chart applies to the eaton 1100. But if it is , it is clear this pump is designed with a max RPM of 3K and performance drops off above 3K. I can tell you that all hydraulic machines ie. boat propellers, hydraulic turbines , and pumps have a well defined safe operating range. If this range is exceeded, cavitation will occur causing a loss in performance and the possibility of severe pitting damage to metal parts near the cavitation. I would recommend calling Eaton for information before increasing the RPM of the pump.

First I'd like to thank everyone for being so helpful and offering expert advise to get this tractor on the track. Last week we pulled at the Hebron Fair. After a few tries and smoked a belt we ended up with a 90ish foot pull. This week is the Berlin Fair. My son is just loving this. I am going to have to find a tractor for myself...lol

I have a 1974 c160 and it has 4 bolts holding the engine down just as pfrederi said. 2 go through the frame into pan on right sibe and 2 outside lift side. I always say a picture is worth a thousand words.

I thought there was a decent crowd, did you mean the painted green D series yes it was sold as a , and there was a D250 (4cyl) that also sold for $900, the one with the backhoe sold for around the same but after the 314-8 next to the C? with the sickle bar mower, I left for home, also the 520-8 was a hydro with under 300 hrs A-Z got that for $750.

It probably has 10W30 motor oil in it. If the oil is an amber color it is 10W30, if it is red it is Dextron ATF.

Glad you and Emory had another father/son adventure, he got a great Ranger. I had done some on-line bidding but don't guess I was high bidder on any of them. C-195, RJ-35 and 1054; got any idea what they went for? If I had won one or more I wouldn't have minded the 14 hour round trip, but just couldn't bring myself to drive up and spend a couple of nights in a motel. Hope we hear from others too, thanks for your update.

Happy Birthday Doug from your photo I thought someone had posted a photo of a Robertson clan member from Louisiana . Your are still younger than me and Steve on a stick. Look we turned out as we near 7 decades.

I agree with Jeff - prices were everywhere. Some really good deals and some really high prices. A-Z was there and picked up several to take back to PA. I scored a roached out blackhood that has a fixable deck, good seat and tires for $50. I got a nice 857 at a reasonable price and Emory got a lawn ranger that I paid way too much for, but he was using his money from selling some toys and I chipped in about the same amount. I couldn't go home with two and not get it for him. I was a little disappointed with the tractors because there was a lot of rust with some good tractors sprinkled in. We've stopped long enough to eat at Red Robin in Roanoke on our way home. Really enjoyed talking with @oldredrider and his friend Mike. Really great guys! Here are a few pics of the sale and our buys.

Here in Eastern Ontario, I lost power for 2 weeks during a large ice storm back in 97 or so. Had no money for a generator so I had no water but house was heated with wood so we kept warm. Quickly learned how to cook on the top of a wood stove. Food in refrigerators was warming up and thawing so we made up big stews and invited the neighbors over for meals to use it up. During these types of events you quickly learn the character of your neighbors and friends. Hope you are powered back up soon.

My 48" decks , both from the early '80s do the same thing - I want to add a strip of rubber and back it with a metal strip just as you describe . Half to prevent clippings from being thrown forward and onto the engine's flywheel screen , the other half to increase the side discharge air flow to better spread the clippings out instead of leaving wind rows . It seems to me that cutting out a portion of the club members from wheel horse discussions is counter-productive...If I don't have a dog in the fight, so to speak, I can still learn and enjoy the discussion..What is the purpose of a splinter group..?...

@Achto had posted the question regarding the pulley size change, but I was unable to reply to it because I am not a 520 Club member. I started a post and cut and pasted his question into my post so we common folks could reply. This "Club" thing has a few wrinkles to be worked out. Here is the post that I am referring to. It has been up ten hours longer than this post but no one was able to reply unless they were a "Club Member" even though it is nor a 520 only subject.

I cycled through different models a lot the first couple years until I landed on my favorites. Now it's Gt14 or modified GT14's and RJ's for fun. but there are a couple I'd gladly have back. The C195 being one off the top of my head.

You done goood! Some do, but to me that is overkill. The majority of our horses didn't see a gear lube change for several decades and survived with regular gear oil.

My Wheel horse radio mounted is a $35 set of Stanley hearing protector am-fm stereo headphones and I use them when I mow and when I have the cab on for snow removal in the winter. A very satisfying and cost effective method of entertainment while getting some seat time..............

I guess I should have added this. My Meat Head Son in Law has had Temporary ownership of my 312-8 for several years. He doesn't take care of anything he has. MY MISTAKE, anyway he filled a partially empty fuel tank with STODARD SOLOVENT. He thought that the 5 gal Jerry can had gas in it, WRONG. Then he calls me and tells me that the engine won't crank. You might look in the Electrical Section for what I ended up with a Engine Won't Crank. I won't fill this thread up with all that. As for fuel additives, each to their own. Brent

Just went through the process to get a new air compressor. Had a Craftsman (Devilbis) 30 Gal. dry lube wheel barrel style Air Comp think it put out 7 CFM @ 90 psi which got me by for over 30 years. Had to rebuild the compressor a couple of years ago but finally decided to replace as it got way too noisy. Need a compressor to power aircraft rivet guns, grinders, sandblast tools and needed a minimum of 10 CFM @ 90 PSI. The vertical units offer large tanks reducing duty cycles for longer duration tasks wanted to stay with the wheel barrel style for ease of portability. After many hours of research decided on a Campbel Hausfeld VT6271 - 26 Gal., HD Cast Iron Comp, oil lubricated and puts out 10.5 CFM @ 90 PSI. They're priced fairly reasonable (500 - 750.00 range) from sources online but shipping costs was an additional 125.00 + which put them out of reach. Home Depot sells them if you're lucky enough to find one in stock. Had a welder scheduled to come over to install body mount brackets on a Corvette I'm working on and needed something fairly quick. While searching the web for the best price found they are available through True Value online for 549.99 with free delivery to your local True Value store. Never considered looking at True Value online but was pleasantly surprised to learn they offer free shipping on anything purchased online for pick up at their stores. Overall a very capable compressor. The duty cycle is a bit frequent when grinding/sand blasting but happy with it so far.
