12 pointsPicked these up today. A nice set of front weights! I was super excited, my wife thought I was crazy to be so excited over them.

9 points2nd gear + cup holder + Beverage of choice + noise reduction ear muffs + smell of fresh cut grass = Heaven... Unless you are a commercial operation focussed on production - enjoy the seat time...
-
8 pointsDoes anyone know the number of 315s made during the last year of production (2007). Here is the serial number on mine. Thanks, Dave
-
7 pointsThat is one of those things we all deal with. Not too much you can do...make sure you have sharp blades and/or cut the grass more often. Don't let it get so long that you need 2nd gear. If you don't have one, put on a cup holder and enjoy the ride. Welcome to Red Square!!!

6 pointsYour Father In Law put food on the table, cloths on your wife's back and a roof over her head for a lot of years! Here is an opportunity to thank him for that, don't screw it up!
-
6 pointsIn my opinion blood is always thicker than water and you would be on thin ice selling it to anyone other than your FIL! That being said I think he is offering you a very reasonable amount of money for it also.

6 pointsHello, I live in France in the Ardennes, my brother entrusted me his tractor charger 12 automatic before dying. I restored this tractor, I disassembled everything, degreased, sanded and repainted the whole. I found a hydraulic jack and a hydraulic bridge and I would like to review the oil levels and oil type (red) I will try to put you pictures. can you help me. Thank you. Arnaud

5 pointsA 377 hour 314 with the Eaton 1100 tranny and hydraulic lift. $8-900 A good 42" deck $300 A 48" plow $150 A tiller $300 Wheel weights $100 Two link chains $50 Lawn cart $150 What is the neighbor offering? I would not create friction with FIL for a couple of bucks, but IMO that package in my area is worth $16-1800.
-
5 pointsand if it were me, i would sell your new mower and keep the ! if you want to sell it though it depends on condition. Fix that flat tire! these tractors are great for any task, whether it be mowing, tilling or plowing snow! - tractor boy

4 pointsWell guys I just picked this very cool cub 122 tonight. Runs but smokes and after awhile dies under load... but has creeper gear, all driveline including clutch and front pto is brand new! And it has custom hydraulics and sweet CAT O 3 point! Also came with very nice deck(one small patch) and a sears dirt snow plow(which can also be lifted with hydraulics as they go front to back! Came with custom steel wheel weights, all manuals and tons of extra small parts.. that being said I wanna keep this tractor.. but idk if I need all this hydraulic stuff as I wouldn't work it all that hard.. may sell the whole custom set up. But it's awesome and works great! Headlights work too...
-
4 pointsI agree with your neighbor. I'd take it for $1,200 and think I got a steal. But, you may be treading on thin ice since the original offer is "in the family". You might be better off selling to your father-in-law and have him walk away thinking he owes you something in the future for giving him such a great deal.

4 pointsI hook mine to the acc terminal. Turn the ignition to run for a few seconds you will here the pump and it changes sound after the float valve closes. The turn to start and off you go.

4 pointsI thought I would revive this old thread of mine. I have to say after using my 1977 B80 tractor this spring and summer I am in love with this old girl. She cuts beautifully pulls like a horse should and purrs like a kitten. I have a pretty steep path that leads down to a lower level of my property where I have my shooting range. This girl climbs up that hill like the Cog Railroad and it just keeps impressing me with it's power. It blows me away that a 40 year old 8hp engine can do what it does. Did I say I love this thing lol. Hope you are all having a great summer.
-
4 pointsYou guys must have pool tables for lawns. I have never been on a surface that I would cut in 3rd high. Seriously were our tractors & decks designed to cut at those speeds? I would think 8 mph is kinda fast and my 37" would not cut that well at that speed. Aren't we trying to impose Zero Turn performance onto our tractors?

4 pointsWent to an auction today. Scored this nice little tub cart. No other WH items at the auction though. Original paint, rims too even has the dust caps! This one will go to my collection going to have to get rid of my current one. I pulled the serial tag off it was barely hanging on have to glue it back.
-
4 pointsIn that case, you don't have to worry about it engaging into the flywheel starter ring and making the engine run backwards!

4 pointsI have the HF Needle scaler + I got a box of extra needles. One of the best tools I have ever bought anywhere. I wear eye and ear protection and have at it. It's great for frames too. DO NOT USE ON SHEET METAL!!!!! +

Arnaud

3 pointsAs my C121 has had an engine change as discussed in previous posts I was contacted today and given the opportunity to look at an unmolested C161 with the original Kohler 16hp in place, It's been locked away for years but I'm taking a look this week and knowing me I'll buy it anyway...😉
-
3 pointsI did the same two years ago for a old Pennsylvania Panzer. My wife thought I was out of my mind and told me it in several ways. I just chuckled and said I'll be back. But I picked this thing up for $100. Guy called me and said if you can come today or tomorrow its yours. But after that it's going to scrap. So I said sure be there tomorrow and woke up to about the only storm we got that winter.

3 pointsGeez that is a very good tractor and attachments you are parting with. Only 380 hrs on the tractor. Mine from the same era are at 900-1000 hrs and still going strong. I know the attraction of new is very strong, but unless you bought a high end JD or Simplicity prepare yourself for buying another tractor while your FIL just keeps on rolling with the 314 hydro.
-
3 pointsMy wife & i had five acres once upon a time, and she thought the same thing until we bought her a 314-8 and she started helping me. Then my fun time went down, but i had a little more time to play in the shed with my herd, and even work in an extra once in a while. I think at that time I had around a dozen part of the time.

3 points@Jhawkins There is a metal plug that fits in the hole. If you search for this below in that popular auction site, you will find a new one for about $19. On the 551 electric start, it was drilled in the middle for the ignition switch (extremely rare to find). On some of the 401 models it was either blank or it was drilled for a kill switch. "New Original OEM 1961 Wheel Horse Tractor 401 551 Hood Hole Plug Button #4225" @Jhawkins, if I may ask, why did you swap out the Kohler engine? What do you plan to do with it?

3 pointsMy friend Ken just picked up an old 856 with a plow and a cart and mower deck from a guy up here in CT. Turns out, he had all the original paperwork from the day it was bought and all the service records up until today. Ken is now the second owner and had a 1/2" thick binder of records that are fascinating to see! Check these out: That's the plow sale price, on Aug 27,1966. Tractor was purchased the same day. Here's the folder he got. Here's a few more pics of a BEAUTIFUL catalog inside. It isn't faded in the slightest. What a thing! A whole year! Nice garden plowing outfit.. Mike

3 pointsI have replaced a couple of mine with electric pumps, cost less than $ 20.00 and work great. For a faithful restoration I would stick with an OEM Kohler pump, but for a worker or play time electric is the way to go.
-
3 pointsDo not throttle down to use 3rd. The blades need to spin at designed RPM to achieve the lift for a proper cut. You could possibly switch to a smaller transmission input pulley to increase the ground speed. You may be able to decrease the dia. slightly 1/2" max , and not affect the clutch and belt function. Any more than 1/2" dia decrease will require a shorter belt and would probably cause problems getting the belt to stop for smooth gear changing.

3 pointsWhy yes I did. And also just started a job a week ago that I've been trying to get since I moved.. so money is better now. Also I cleaned out my big back shed made shelfs for my wheel horse cart and #2 IH cart so that saved me room. Also this tractor may end up in New York with my dad or cousin because they are big cub guys. O and it was a deal I couldn't pass up that was gear shift not hydro. One last thing it def is NOT gonna be a Camaro! In the spring I'm gonna buy a 2013+ 5.0 mustang or maybe order brand new one. Craig... wouldn't mind having a duster someday tho lol one last thing did anyone notice I DID clean out my garage also to start making room for the new car?? Only my 2 babies left in there now, they will be last to go out back... cub is in there as I unloaded it late last night and it's where I work on them but will be headed out back when I'm done... whew you guys got me defending myself cuz I have a hobby I can't stop spending money on lol

2 pointsWith the asphalt millings I would suggest using a steel edge again (my dad and myself have used car/truck leaf springs welded to the original edge last pic rear grader blade) but also investing in a set of skid shoes(not that hard to make as I have made some the raw metal in the pics vs the black T/WH which can still be bought from Toro) so yo can keep that cutting edge up 1/4"-1/2" above the millings surface when level ,reducing edge wear and surface media removal, Jeff.

2 pointsHere is my $90 auction cart. Poor condition compared to yours. The rear lip was bent and cracked at the tilting anchor plate. . I sold it for $190 on CL.

2 pointsI did replace the engine drive pulley on a 416-8 that I re-powered with an 18 hp onan with the hydro pulley. I was a little difficult to find a correct belt to fit and you can smell it burning every once and awhile. 3 gear is definitely faster. the rest of the gears are close to the same. 2nd gear maybe a little faster and seems to make some difference. this is why I kinda prefer to mow with a hydro although my problem is with a hydro I go to fast and like the better quality of cut I get with a gear drive. eric j

2 pointsIf you want to lower or eliminate the wind drag off the ramp , cut it in half and add in a 1x*x1/8" piece of tubing to each half and a pair of bullet weld on hinges . This turns the gate into a bi-fold and if done right it can lay flat on the deck in it's half folded position . Took me awhile to figure out the geometry on this but a lot of utility trailer manufactures have gone this route - sure helps with drag and fuel mileage , not to mention you don't risk the gate ripping out the pins that hold it up as I've seen many do over time . I can try to get some pics of the hinge details if you need them . Sarge

2 pointsNice project tractor and I see it also has the 1960 firewall to add to Achto's observations. I'd say a 1960 model with a '61 hood.
-
2 pointsGot deck and wheel weights off, I'm gonna sell them. Looks tough now with fat heavy tires and all that hydraulic/3 point on it!

2 pointsFor towing heavy loads, I would look for a long frame with an 8 speed transmission. Engine HP is not an issue for towing with an 8 speed. Traction and enough weight and frame length are more critical for safe pulling and stopping.

2 pointsIt was slow going as I struggled to get the 520 tie rod ball joints loose on the tie rod. And I had incorrect seals for front wheels. While skf 12407 matches dimensionally with toro part number the rubber seal does not protrude similarly so I finally cleaned up and prepped the originals. They should last several more years. But time slips everywhere on a build. Pictoral update with wheels, tires and steering installed. 14" from surface to bottom edge of frame. It is level as well. In some pics it looks like it may not be but that is illusion.
