13 pointsWent to an auction today. Scored this nice little tub cart. No other WH items at the auction though. Original paint, rims too even has the dust caps! This one will go to my collection going to have to get rid of my current one. I pulled the serial tag off it was barely hanging on have to glue it back.

12 pointsMy friend Ken just picked up an old 856 with a plow and a cart and mower deck from a guy up here in CT. Turns out, he had all the original paperwork from the day it was bought and all the service records up until today. Ken is now the second owner and had a 1/2" thick binder of records that are fascinating to see! Check these out: That's the plow sale price, on Aug 27,1966. Tractor was purchased the same day. Here's the folder he got. Here's a few more pics of a BEAUTIFUL catalog inside. It isn't faded in the slightest. What a thing! A whole year! Nice garden plowing outfit.. Mike

10 pointsActually, I started on my "new" 1056's rims today... was using this new tool I've recently added to my arsenal. A while back, a few of the retired navy guys were at work sharing old war stories... mentioned using an old school needle guns back in the day, to remove rust & scale on ships while at sea. Figured, what the hey... I'd try an Ebay search for a cheap used one... found&bought a band new one for a good price, was kinda surprised when two of 'em showed up in the mail. Anyway, like I said...gave it a shot today, & it made short work of that nasty old rust too. Figured it take the whole process on one, from start to finished to share here with the forum. Pretty impressed with the ease of use, and final product. Only three more to go now.

6 pointsBased on your previous experience Jay... I think I'd be modifying that new trailer with a few more (better visibility) taillights.
-
6 pointsWaiting for the pic with the gate down Jay. Being one of the " tired old guys", I've been thinking of this mod for my trailer. Of course, since I'm also a cheap old scavenger, I will probably use some old garage door springs....now where did I put those......

5 pointsIt was slow going as I struggled to get the 520 tie rod ball joints loose on the tie rod. And I had incorrect seals for front wheels. While skf 12407 matches dimensionally with toro part number the rubber seal does not protrude similarly so I finally cleaned up and prepped the originals. They should last several more years. But time slips everywhere on a build. Pictoral update with wheels, tires and steering installed. 14" from surface to bottom edge of frame. It is level as well. In some pics it looks like it may not be but that is illusion.

5 pointsBecause you never can get all the "flushing" fluid out of the system I would use an inexpensive ATF to flush the system, then drain it and refill with s good ATF, possible even a synthetic ATF. If you completely drained the system when you had it apart you could switch and use inexpensive 10w 30 for the flush then the good stuff for the permanent fill.

4 pointsI had just finished mowing the yard with my 520 with a 420 cc predator. It has been a good engine, and like a good engine should, it got the tractor back to the barn and just quit running. I was gonna replace it under the extended warranty, but the warranty had expired.. Time for an autopsy. We all know these are throw away engines, so at least something might be learned before buying another. I did not do stuff in the correct order, but the original idea was just to look things over anyway. First, i used the pull start and it moved a bit and then ---CLUNK--- Broken connecting rod, says I.. Then I turned it backwards and it clunked again.I stripped it down and took off the side cover, expecting disaster, but everything was oK and the oil sump even looked clean. It had compression so i took off the spark plug and noticed a screw missing from inside the air cleaner. The pictures tell the rest. [Look closely at the bottom of the picture of the piston] So a sheet metal screw into plastic might not win any industry awards for engineering. Couple that with a square piece of foam for an air filter with space underneath so that same screw can be sucked into the engine..The second picture shows the location in the air cleaner housing from which the bent and battered screw emerged.. The screw was big enough that it kept the piston down from TDC, so no spark happened and only one little dent in the piston and head. Two gaskets for ten bucks total will fix this engine. Now would be a good time to upgrade the air filter and install a screen for the engine air intake. Harbor Freight just came out with upgrades to the Predator engine series. The new ones have a proper paper filter that would have protected the engine from inhaling the screw.

4 pointsI bought a cheap made utility trailer that I will be doing some upgrades to. I purchased this trailer mainly to haul to the show. It has adequate load capacity yet is lightweight enough to pull with my wife's Highlander. The major problem is the ramp gate weight so lift assist was top priority. I have a repaired hernea that limits me to 50# so I came up with this. Simple but adequate.

4 pointsI did the engine swap and am quite happy how well it turned out. I was able to reuse everything that came off the cub except for the huge muffler I need to modify or search for something that will work. I need to hook up the throttle cable, wire the lights and cover the wiring with some corrugated wire sheath. I have a set of wheel weights to put on that are 105 lbs apiece and two more 40 lb plates that I can stack on top those. I recently picked up a nice set of 6-12 ags but they just don't look right on these style tractors with the wide front axle so I will wait for the rears to blow out from dry rot then replace them. This one is going to be a worker around my yard.

4 pointsI finished the exhaust, muffler and support bracket. Started on the belt guard.

4 pointsThe G was built in Gadsden Alabama, some owners of small farms admired them for cultivating, truck farming etc. Many of the surviving G's need to be repowered, some have been converted to electric power. The Tuff-Bilt is an attempt to reproduce a very similar tractor.. I like them, but I don't know what I'd do with one. https://www.tuff-bilt.com/

4 pointsTackled the 520 Gear reduction today. This thing is going to be really stout. Upgraded to a true bulkhead bearing for support of fan gear shaft that goes to front of tractor. The excessive length of TH of steering wheel is due to 520 was too short. So I cut the gear end off and had a machinest lathe the end of a long rod. I welded gear on and will cut to length when I decide how tall I want the steering wheel to sit. I also ended up having to shorten the fan gear rod on the end that attached to front bulkhead by ~ 7/8 inch. Luckily this left enough space SK i did not have to remake this piece. Should have it on its own wheels tomorrow.

3 pointsAll of the above ... and those old worn out playing cards really work well to mask the tires.
-
3 pointsI would wire wheel the flakes, then feather sand the edges with some 150 (or so) grit sand paper. Prime and paint the outer edge with a couple good coats and then blend in the rest of the wheel.

3 pointsIf you buy a Predator, do it at the start of mowing season on the 90 day free warranty. If it prooves out, buy the two year extended warranty. Be looking for anything like a pooched starter wiring or oil leaks right before the end of the warranty. Even if HFT replaces the engine, you can buy the warranty again for 50 bucks. Almost like renting an engine for 25 bucks a year. I bought one and the electric starter wiring went to smoke. instead of an early replacement, I just pull started it for almost two years and got it replaced at one week before the warranty expired. I could not believe it when they offered another warranty on the replacement engine. Also be aware that the stock muffler on the Predator faces forward and would burn up the hood on your tractor. i run mine without a hood. i suppose that you could cut the muffler pipe and re-weld it to turn sideways, but the pipe appears to be cast iron Of course you could buy that 22 horsepower Predator for $700---- but you could buy a decent Wheel horse for that----

3 pointsGreat Report. The little screw that could....kill a predator.
-
3 pointsIf the 300 series is like the 400 and 500 series from the same time period, there is one area of the tractor sometimes overlooked but somewhat likely to sooner or later cause problems. The fuses and also the safety switch on the blade engagement lever are almost right beneath the battery. Battery fumes/acid and fine dust from mowing gather in the fuse slots and safety switch. Blowing out those areas and a bit of penetrant can work wonders. Spraying penetrant where the key enters the switch has saved the day for me a time or two. I will describe my advice as somewhere on the fringes. Solid diagnostic advice has already been given and cleaning up connections is at the top of that pyramid.. I will also mention that the later model starters live at the front of the engine and in the grass clipping/dust zone. [Onan engine] The grease on the solenoid spiral gear got dirty and hard and had to be cleaned each year for the starter to work. This is an interesting thread. Waiting to see if the horse takes a drink.

3 pointsLucky is the person who finds a true family when their birth parents let them down. Lucky are the people who offer love to those in need and see their love returned in a changed life lived well. After seeing what you dad means to you, the phrase "honor your father" now has a higher meaning to me..
-
3 pointswow. well way mom put it my biological must of drugged me when i was a kid. before my dad adopted me i would return from visitations like a zombie. one time mom took me over to one of her friends house right after i was dropped off. my moms friend looked at me and told mom u need to take him to hospital hes being drugged. well i vomitted on my moms friends carpet and was better. this happened almost everytime not mentioning other things. I am proud to say my dad adopted me because he raised me right. I see you put alot of effort into raising that kid. it will catch up to him and he will realize you raised him. heck if it wasnt for my dad i would not be here on redsquare. i love tractors because of my dad

2 pointsGot a pair of 8.5 wide wheel from a member,( Shuboxlover), good guy to do business with, a few week ago. The paint around the lip is flaking and peeling off, the rest of the painting seems to be okay, this is the second set of these I've seen like that. I'm not sure which tractor I will be putting these on down the road, B-80, or the 416-8, ether way they will need to be painted. My question, if I do some wire brushing with my drill to get rid of the flakes and ruff up the rest of the surface, would that be enough to repaint them, not looking for show room stuff, but something that will hold up. Media blasting in this area has gone the way of most thing now days, big time or non at all. Only guy I could find said $65.00 per rim. Any suggestion?
-
2 pointsThank you for the suggestion. I was at the power equipment shop earlier today and he said the same thing. I cleaned the points again today. I have much better spark. Now I think it's time to clean the carburetor. I got a few good sputters but no major ignition.

2 pointsFor towing heavy loads, I would look for a long frame with an 8 speed transmission. Engine HP is not an issue for towing with an 8 speed. Traction and enough weight and frame length are more critical for safe pulling and stopping.

2 pointsI was wondering where them Hood springs for the 05 Peterbilt went ? Jayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
-
2 pointsNC. Richard, they were both full, when I buy these things I top off the fluid if needed. I think with a little use they'll stop leaking.
-
2 pointsI always liked finding the original paperwork with the tractors, makes the purchase and history complete. Nice find. Glenn

2 pointsI put a 420cc on my 416h and am pleased with it.In putting the hood back on the front of the hood needed to be modified to allow for the exhaust and carb controls. There is an after market exhaust pipe that would allow a muffler to mounted similar to a Kohler.JAinVA

2 pointsit runs a 48" deck just fine. Unlike some of the other predators, the maximum torque rates come at 2500 RPM. It uses a lot less fuel as well.. Not really hacking on the Onans, but i was ignorant and got too many leaves on the air intake and cooked mine

2 pointsIt never fails to excite me when common sense is used as a part of troubleshooting. Simple plain comon sense with a splash of preventative maintenance. The more threads that I read the more I am starting to understand the love people here have for a well designed machine. There are the regulars here that I believe respond to everything that is posted everyone asking for help. I am a person without patience and highly critical and I hope people will take me with a grain of salt at times when I get wound up. Having said that I do freely express my discust with those wanting only to question every answer given by those with many hours on their hour meters. Unfortunately, this thread hasn't gone to well to this point. I hope that my comments weren't responsible for its down fall. Its just that I would sincerely like to see the information that has been given to be at least tried before it is questioned by those possibly not having any mechanical experience ot aptitude.

2 pointsThanks for the reminder Lynn... we were just kicking around the what if we did.

2 pointsIf that spring were red, I would have guessed it came from a tiller or snow blower
-
2 pointsIs this it? Ad says "Motor is free and has compression. Doesn't run and needs work. $100 firm or trade for gokart running or not."
-
2 pointsLooks very good but you can get a smaller heat shield in chrome that Harley Davidson makes for the softail bike online on Ebay. Not too expensive and contour works on RJ and Suburban exhaust.

2 points"My" son was born after 8 years of marriage but found out not long after his birth he wasn't biologically mine, but I stayed true to him giving him my name and my parents as his grandparents right up till this May(13years) where my ex wife and new husband went behind my back and along with the deadbeat biological father letting her new husband adopt him and change "my" sons name to her new husband's,(I fought through the court system to try and keep him as mine and raise him in a more conservative manner as to earning it than buying him every he wanted) I just hope that he realizes as you have ,that it takes more that DNA to be a "father" so in some respects I feel in some sense what you are going through with the loss of your father and the "loss" of my son, keep the faith and God bless you there will be brighter days ahead , Jeff.
