...when you've stumbled upon another keeper. Earlier this week, I noticed a newly listed C/L ad for this "barn find" 1056... price was right, so I picked up the phone, contacted the seller who was still at work. Made arrangements to meet up with him around 5pm later that afternoon, a take a peek at what he dragged home. Story goes, he's a John Deere guy...who picked this up in a recent package deal, & just wanted to pass it on to the "right guy". Original owners son, run on some hard times...(aka, going to jail ) & was selling off some of his deceased fathers collection to pay off some bills. Seller was told, his Dad was meticulous with his maintenance, which seemed plausible, considering it was covered in grease, & inside of the fuel tank looked brand new. Said he always fogged the engine before being put up for storage, so...other than a front tire off the rim, and the JD seat...seemed like a pretty good deal for $100. That said, I took the chance, shook the man's hand...and loaded the ol' girl up. After getting it home & unloading...I was hoping the story wasn't BS. Had to admit here, the old girl was looking pretty rough. The following day, I did my usual routine though...took it to work and it an hours bath with our heated pressure washer...followed by a good dose of compressed air. Then left it sit for a couple days to dry out, while I tackled the usual fuel system refresh, new plug, new oil & air filter...then tubed the flat front tire. Today was the day to try putting some fire in the hole, though it did initially try to pop off...I discovered it had a really weak spark. Once I cleaned to points, she fired right off...smoked like a chimney at first. Then, cleared up, and is running like a champ now...no runs, drips, or errors. Was so stoked, that I took the rest of the afternoon, to do a little aesthetic detailing, changed the gawd awful seat for another I had here "in stock". Took a couple picts here to show the progress so far, plan to to the rims, and probably add new rubber in the future. I think it turned out pretty good so far...let me know what you think.

Even though I only made it to the show for a couple of hours this afternoon, I still had a great time. There were lots of farm tractors and tons of GT's. Lots of the common ones and even many of the rare ones. I'll start the thread and put in a few pictures. I'm sure that Dan will have a lot more pics and more info since he was there for several days. Lots of nice horses... I was drooling over this awesome "Big Wheel"! Dan's buddy Jason has a growing collection of vintage MF tractors that have been pictured in other threads here. He was gracious to let Zach sit on his 7. His grandpa purchased this tractor new in 1970. He grew up using it. I very much enjoyed the history lesson that he had to share on his 6 cool tractors. Lots of classy Cubs I probably shouldn't share this here but one day I would like to own a 140 H3 just like this one! This Allis was super cool! I wanted to ask him if I could through on a 10" Brinly and take a couple passes! This David Bradley was a unique machine for sure. The highlight of the day for me was Dan sharing his awesome pulling tractor with our family by letting Caleb drive it and... Zach go with him for a ride. They both enjoyed it very much. Thank you @Achto! It was a great day. We also got to speak with Jim for a few minutes before he left to head home after an early morning wrangling in northern IL. Always fun to share with him! We missed you @Rp.wh! This show is worth attending if you are in the area and can make it...

It has been months since I had started revamping an old boat trailer and making a 5'x 9' utility trailer out of it. Finally have it to a point where I can use it for bringing more "Tractor Treasures" home. Trailer lighting is all installed and the trailer deck boards are on. Might weld up a ramp/gate yet, but later. Transformed into something nice after cutting, welding, painting, etc.

I saw soooo many GT's today that I would've liked to have taken home with me but...they were someone else's I love to see this hobby thriving though... Dan let Caleb (my son) also drive his Rat Rod---caleb couldn't stop talking about that! He was too light to get it to pull a wheelie by blipping the throttle though. Boy--that thing sounds sooo cool

We've already had a couple nights here when it's dipped into the 50's Mike... supposedly, that's what triggers the trees to start changing their colors. That Japanese Maple will be completely red by mid October...just a little over 60 days away from now.

I bagged another Briggs powered off brand for my eclectic collection. The seller listed it as a 66 Speedex S-14, but I am thinking the S-14 just had a fwd/reverse gear box & this has a 4 speed Peerless? Still has the funky belt tensioner that moves the whole engine forward to put tension on the drive belt. Even has a counter fit off brand slot hitch in back.

You should be able to polish that engine pulley with some crocus (emery) cloth. I love my old 704, I call it the yard tug, it moves everything around the house from my 5X10 trailer to the garden cart without a whimper.

If you have a Grainger store or other industrial supply store near by just take it in and they will match it up. They are sized by the bore of the hole the bearing slides into, for example, a 1 1/4" snap ring will measure 1.388" when not under tension. When installing the ring be sure to put the raised edge out, they are stamped out and the other side is rounded and won't hold as well.

You guys that poo poo it would be surprised what a little 200 series is capable of. I bought a 210-H brand new in 1990. Kept it for 20 yrs. I mowed, plowed snow, adapted a Simplicity blower for it an used that for about 6 yrs and pulled down a small tree with it. I had to put a seat on it, a diode and a tie rod and a few batteries. That's it. It was running like a top when I sold it.

My father in-law picked up this treasure at an auction a few years back. It's been sitting since along the back fence row getting swallowed up by the weeds until we started clearing off the fences again & drug it to my shop. I think he got caught up in the bidding & paid way to much for it, but I told him it's not a total loss & I could bring it back.....with a lot of parts! Unless I can find a correct Briggs for it, I'll probably throw in a spare K181 I have on the shelf. Currently in the process of tearing it down,my FIL will paint the tins while I do the mechanical work. Check out the inspection window on the backside of the engine!

I thought for sure the Dino was going to stash that one away in his cave somewhere ! I still say put your grader blade on that one @WHX11 or 12-13-14 , whatever your up to now .

Thanks again guys. I'm glad I asked. It looked like something cheap to tinker with, but considering my 314 is much more capable, I'd rather invest any money spent that direction.

I don't know if it would even achieve the effect you are looking for... I tried something similar and there wasn't any noticeable difference. There might be better success deflecting sound towards the ground

Bleach will destroy paint and you have a bad case of sand and repaint. At a place I worked at there was a pump with bleach and it removed the paint off every thing it got on. Only pvc pipes could take it. Metal pipes disintegrated over time

A tap with a block of wood will jar a corroded set of brushes enough to make it work - if it doesn't you're at the point of taking it off and either fixing it or replacing it . Steel headed hammers and their operators have no idea how brittle those magnets are - until they learn how much that error is going to cost them . I've seen that with the huge starters on diesel trucks - none of which are fun to remove/repair/replace and core charges can hit north of $800 in a hurry if you bust the field magnets . Had one guy do it twice , to the same Kenworth - only to find out later it was a $20 relay that was the issue ....boy, was he mad , lol... Sarge

Thanks for the info. I don't really need it, nor do I want a project grass cutter. Heck, I don't really have the room for it. Think I'm gonna let this one pass. Thanks again.

Dear Lord, Duke has a medical condition that needs your divine intercession. Please guide the therapist’s hands to be steady and effective to do the task at hand, and not create any further damage We pray against any infection or complications. Calm the heart of his family. Give him your peace so his body can heal under the best conditions. In the name of Jesus, bless him to be healthier after this procedure than before. Lord allow this temporary trial to bring this family closer to you and each other. Thank you Lord for your blessing on this family. We praise you as we know we are in good hands- the very hands of God. In Jesus name, we thank you for each day. Amen.

Well the last time I had some T.I.A's it was due to my own negligence as I was smoking and it cause them. I lucked out back then in 2009 because I had a 100% recovery. I wasn't so Lucky this time MaryJane and I have been going to the Bone Cracker the past couple months (I had been going for lower back pain). And the last time we went was on July 13th. After we left I had a terrible headache and to make a Long story Short I ended up In the Memorial Hospital In South Bend that day and I have been in here ever since and at present am going through physical therapy. I have been getting my arse kicked every day and am on the road to recovery. The Doc asked me what I was going to the Chiropractor for? I told him lower back pain. He said why was he adjusting your neck I told him I didn't know According to the Doctor he said when he adjusted my neck he broke loose the arterial artery that cause a blood clot to go to my brain that caused all this. What I am battling is swallowing, Right side leg control, and Vision. I Get out of therapy the 8th this next Tuesday and will be going through two more months of outpatient therapy. I thank God because it could have been worse. I don't know what my full outcome will be, but any prayers you want to send my way I appreciate them! P.S. Please think twice before going to the BONE CRUSHER! ~Duke

A friend says "Dave, my starter quit"... so I gave him a replacement, thinking I could rebuild his dead one. Well, I gotta tell ya.... it is beyond DEAD. Here is every reason why to NEVER HIT WITH A HAMMER..... The armature in this would NOT turn at all...stuck tight and he wondered why it didn't work. So... TO EVERYONE..... DON'T HAMMER IT.... If it quits, take it off and fix it....or buy a replacemment

On Fri. I helped my friend Willie set up his saw mill & then we got his 36hp Frick steam engine fired up to cut some lumber. Leveling the mill is quite time consuming. After sawing for a while Willie decided that he wanted to hook up to the rock crusher for a while. Here I'm using my 3500lb tractor to position his 8500lb engine and get the belt lined up. The 36hp Frick had no issues running the rock crusher. This 1930's Oshkosh truck with a Waukesha power unit mounted on the back also took a turn at running the crusher. This is an Allis Chalmers steam powered generator. This generator once ran the Monarch appliance factory in Beaver Dam WI. There were a lot of hit miss engines as well as other small engine displays. With mowers to boat motors as well as advertising, this Reo display was quite impressive. For odd balls & customs I found this Scatmobile. I also like this custom Farmall M? Well the hood may have been from an M. For those who are into plowing, this may be the wrong color but the home made trailer plow was very cool & well done. The feature tractors at this show were Ford & farm equipment that was sold by Sears. This Graham-Bradey was an item once sold by Sears. It was great hanging with @WHX11 & Cindy for a while. I also had a great time with @PeacemakerJack and his great children. Caleb definitely has the tractor bug for sure. My favorite part of going to tractor shows is seeing friends (new & old). I had 1 casualty at this show, my Rat Rod is currently in sick bay. I'll start a post on it when I find the problem.

When you take an item to a "Dip and Strip" pain removal place they use a sodium hydroxide solution which has a PH of 13.5 +/- to remove the paint. bleach has a PH of about 12.5 so I'm afraid you have no choice but stripping the rest of the paint and repainting it.

I've got a c160 it's my parts tractor and I tried to start it but the starter wouldn't do anything. I removed the starter and one of the magnets has a broken piece . I suspected the PO hit it .it's not even fixable with out another case. I did hit starters on cars when i was young for not starting . But I was young and I knew it all.

A week or so ago I posted a procedure for testing a five or six wire Kawasaki regulator I think it was because I had never seen it before. That is likely the one you are thinking of. The one you have can not be tested. If everything else in the charging system meets the specs and the charging system still does not work it is assumed the regulator has failed. A couple of things I have learned but you won't see in the manuals. One of the regulator's AC terminals is connected directly to the DC terminal inside the regulator. You can verify this using an ohmmeter. If that one AC terminal is rusted off as they sometimes are you can connect one AC wire from the stator to the DC wire and it will work as normal. I does not matter which AC wire goes where. Don't think this will apply to you because your terminals are still there for the most part. Sand the surfaces so the wire terminals get a good clean tight contact. If the regulator now works coat the terminals with dielectric silicone grease so they can not corrode again. The aluminum body of the regulator needs a good ground to the battery negative post. Adding a ground wire to one of the regulator's mounting screws will guarantee that. As these tractors get older the chassis grounds deteriorate. The regulator needs to see the battery voltage before it can regulate the charge current. With the regulator installed back on the tractor and wires connected turn the key to the RUN position with the engine not running. Check the voltage across the battery posts and record it. Now move the red test lead to the DC terminal on the regulator. You should have the same voltage. If not the same voltage the path the charge current takes to get to the battery is compromised and needs to be corrected. I have cleaned the potting material off the regulator and found failed diodes. Was able to replace them for a few cents and still working 20 years later. That regulator was originally mounted with the terminals up. I replaced it with the terminals down thinking the heat it generates would be better dissipated with the aluminum fins above the source of the heat. I don't know how valid that thought is but it still works hours at a time. Garry

I was just going to say Craig is the only RS member with his own loading dock! Craig said "He took a chance" on the tractor. It could have a seized motor and trans and a cracked frame and still make a nice addition to "The Fence"

, the other day I was in an auto parts store and overheard this age old advice being given! Got to the parking lot in time to hear the loud smack and the cursing that followed when it didn't start. I have also seen this bad advice given on this site, but it is promptly rebuked as a rule.

Funny thing is I grew up in a family owned Allis Chalmers AG dealership and I don't even own one . We didn't sell lawn and garden because the local hardware sold Simplicity . I do believe though these are both 64's . Neither run but really haven't tried . Couldn't pass them up because they were cheap .

Still on the subject of the early steering, I adapted an old two speed hand drill to use as a steering box. The idea was to have steering from the normal wheel and also from the rear while being towed on a trailer. As the engine drive shaft was on the center line, the steering column was diverted around it via 1/4 drive universal joints and various extension bars. The chuck ( removed ) end of the drill was extended with a welded in bar which just cleared the underside of the gearbox and protruded from the rear of the tractor. This would have been connected to a steering wheel on the trailer via another U/J and shaft. The drill winding handle / lever was connected to the track rod assembly with a short rod and swivel joints. This all worked OK but had excessive free play, mainly due to back lash between the drill gears. I eliminated some of this by drilling, tapping and inserting 4BA adjusting screws in the case which pushed the two bevel gears closer together but couldn't do anything with the helical and spur gearing. After lots of work, trying to keep the U/J's and extensions at the minimum angle, allowing clearance, trying various setups etc and LOTS of head scratching, this arrangement was discarded. As it appears that operation from a trailer is the way to go a much simpler mechanism is being worked on. I have a new idea occupying the brain cell which MIGHT also enable steering from the correct position but would need a half size driver. The following photo's show part of this early set up. As the chassis was getting close to needing a proving run before proceeding further, a seat of some sort was needed. A sheet of 3/16" alloy was marked and cut using a length of channel as a guide for the saw. Holes were drilled and a piece cut out to clear the gearbox. The test runs were made with bits of wood for footrests. Various positions were tried but it was difficult to sit in comfort. Sitting as far back as possible, the best option, resulted in the front wheels lifting. A roll of lead tied under the chassis cured this. I also tried kneeling on the platform, one hand on the engine to steady myself, and the other operating the steering tiller and throttle. All very awkward especially while bouncing over the rough ground. The runs were successful with just enough engine speed for the centrifugal clutch to engage and in first and then second gear. As camera man Mr Sutton wasn't available at the time, no video made. This was rectified on later test runs. I then set the steering and throttle and watched it run around in circles. Easier than trying to stop myself being thrown off.

The Aluminum brightness makes it really pop. Ive not had much luck with that color being robust and lasting. Would like to hear how how it does for you. I may go with more or of a stainless on next project and it will have exterior weights which are red so it will have a similar look. These are getting mounted on the GT22-8 rear rims.
