11 pointsyesterday we managed to carefully get dad out to his tractor. He never got to sit on it after repaint was done until yesterday. yes i stuck a rag on seat just for precaution. @Vinylguy you can see i got the trailer in the picture . i also got a little something i read to dad. here it is. now guys this is what ill read at his wake if i can hold together. i read it to him tonight he cried. i wanted to read it to him now rather than waiting, because eachday he slips further away. Dad I wanted to say I am proud that you are my Dad! I thank you for adopting me. You mean the world to me, you taught me a lot and I will truly miss you. My first memory of you was when you lived in the Enos hotel; I was only around 2 I think. Which shocked Mom when I told her. I remember you leaving for work during the night you sometimes woke me up for a hug. I even remember Mom taking me with to your work place sometimes. But I can't remember why. I remember the semi in our yard that you back in all the way down the driveway. Now to some this might not be important; but to me it is! You got me into liking tractors. I remember my first ride on the 502 Wheel Horse I was young, you did the shifting and assisted in the steering while walking along beside it. I also remember riding in the homemade trailer in the yard. There was a time I was sitting on the tractor, I kept flipping the toggle switch and you told me to "quit it". That I'd break it. Surprising it STILL works! I have a lot of memories of you with the tractor from you hitting mom's shed with it and flipping it over trying to get the neighbor's John Deere unstuck. I even remember you telling me NOT to touch your Wheel Horses and I did it anyway just to get the driveway plowed. I broke the pull cord on it that day. The past couple years I wanted to restore the 502 which I am glad I was able to restore it when you could help still. We took a few trips to get the parts, but I wish you could of gone on the last trip but you were in the hospital I put a lot of money into it to get it to where you would be proud of it, including the special decal. But that doesn't matter how much money we put into it because it means a lot to US! As I said we made parts runs, some across the state. I enjoyed every minute. We only got to go to one tractor show together that was the time when I hurt the trailer springs and the transmission in the Sonoma because I bought too much! I know you didn't like getting up so early for the trips, but we always had a good time. You helped me a lot over the years, without your help I couldn't have amazed you at times. There was times where you thought I was insane for bringing certain tractors home. Then you were shocked when I got them running. I will cherish your 2 favorite tractors which are the 1962 502 Wheel Horse and the 1972 Sears Compact 8E. I thank you for helping me fix the tractors when I needed help. I will miss the help! We had a lot of fun times. I loved sitting outside next to a fire listening to music with you, now I won't be able to do that anymore.... There were also video games we used to play together. I have a lot of good memories with you and I know spiritually you will always be there for me. I love you and I will miss you!

7 pointsHey guys, my name is Jake and I am 16 years old. I'm from southern Chester county, Pennsylvania and I am new on Redsquare. I have been to the show before. I am not new to the antique scene or wheel horses although I currently do not own any. I am however going to look at a suburban tomorrow, pics will come if I do purchase. Just figured I'd say a little about myself

6 pointsI'm with Dave on this one......If I could only have one tractor, the 12HP auto would be my choice and this looks like a good one. I agree with Richard, $700 is probably what you could expect to get for this unit to quickly settle an estate, but when I actually break down the tractor and implements, the value goes up quite a bit. SS snow blower $200 42" SD deck w/DD pulleys and possibly new blades and belts $300 WH wheel weights $100 chains $20 electric PTO clutch $100 two piece seat in nearly perfect condition $150 I am in no way suggesting you part out this unit, just noting prices of similar equipment I have seen sold recently. Although I would advertise the blower and deck separate from the tractor. I have found many buyers are only in need of a deck or a blower or just the tractor. If I owned this tractor, I would be reluctant to sell it for less than $1000, but this looks like one that I would keep for myself. My three sense, scents, cents.

5 pointsI've added 520H gear reduction to my '82 C195. I also added thrust bearings. Makes a difference in steering. Edwroy
-
5 pointsI wouldn't hook the 12" punisher up to ... well maybe I would just for grins We'll have to get some 241's in a furrow for some action shots Josh!
-
5 pointsNow we need more pictures with the brackets in place.
-
4 pointsMy buddy in Indiana is injured veteran. He swears by the Gear Reduction set up. If he is ok with it my guess is most would be.
-
4 pointsTwo things popped up in CL locally... Curious. The guy says they're for wheel horse but I don't recognize them. Is that part of a mid mount grader blade or something else? And... What the heck even is that?!

4 points...and at that 1:41, you'll see Achto pulling one of his world famous wheelies.

4 points@PeacemakerJack, Nice looking 953. I'm now a proud owner of two 953s, though only one of them is currently running. I would love to hear how good a 953 plows. Be sure you show pictures and videos of yours when you do get it out onto a field to plow.
-
4 pointsWinner Winner, Chicken Dinner. It started and ran and the spark at the points is now blue and correct. We still need to find a suitable permanent wire to run the coil.and dial in the carb. I hope the transmission is OK I tested the key switch and i think there are two terminals that function during cranking. I have some other tractors with the same switch to test and compare functionality. I got some test clips for the multimeter so it won't require three hands to .use it. A very nice tractor with front blade and mower deck for $200 that i could not pass up
-
4 pointsGear reduction steering is a big help but I doubt it's as good as power steering. I added trailer hubs and tires. The tires are 6 ply and hold 70 psi. That was a big difference. High psi tires is where I'd start...

4 pointsI bought this same tractor and it is the NO-NAME year of 1973. Simply called a '12 HP Auto'. In 1974 this was changed to a C-120 and there main differences are :1) '73 has a 10-pinion differential and '74 (and later) have the 8-pinnion diff. 2) Motion control lever was moved from 'between your knees' to the motion lever (taller) being on the right side near the steering wheel. Great tractor...hard to beat and I like the autos for lawn mow and snow plowing.
-
4 pointsYou have a 1973 and from the looks of the photos it seems to be in nice condition. Once it is running and the transmission can be proven to function properly I would think It might bring about $ 700 as a package deal.
-
4 pointsTyler, the one thing I feel your father needs now is reassurance that you and the rest of the family will do well after he passes. That and the fact that all of you love him will make him rest a bit more easily. He has been your provider and protector all your life, let him know that he raised you well and the family will miss him greatly, but will make it. Dear God, Help Bill Elschide discover your peace. Let him receive your comfort. Help him to be at rest knowing that you care for him, and that you love him. Calm his soul as he move into the afterlife. May he spend eternity with you; may he live forever in your presence. Amen.
-
4 pointsWell, it's back there somewhere, but the blade hides the C-141 So here it is on the trailer for $200 So then I took off the engine tins to find very loose head bolts.. Might need some help with this one
-
3 pointsDave Upper right hand corner is the search block ...try loader or FEL in there and shake the tree to see what falls out. Lots of guys here with a loader on a 520 and you'll find lots of good info.

-
3 pointsYes, since 2008 or so it's been shuffled around a bit as where the info is. I've been very lucky in 15+ years of CDL driving to deal with the courteous and cordial DOT officials here in VT, NH and Maine. I have heard of Many others who've had similar experiences to yours. I don't have a way to answer what your specific state has for Actual regs, but I'll say this: ALWAYS go heavier than you think is needed. If you need medium chain/straps, get heavy. If you need one chain, use 2.... ETC... At least up here in Northern New England, loads DO Need to meet/ exceed DOT regs, even if privately owned and no DOT numbers are needed. Keep being careful. You have the right mind-set.

3 pointsEd's expertise about horses is showing and he's spot on. Do keep in mind that those figures can go up and, unfortunately, down depending on you part of the country. None the less a nice and has a lot of life left in her. Big thing is yes, get it running and cleaned up. Definitely going to want to do something with the battery & cables. Fresh fluids, gas, filter etc. Word of warning tho...folks have been known to fall in love with these!
-
3 pointsThank you. This is the input I was looking for. It looks like it's going to cost me about $250 to do this upgrade. I was hoping to hear it made a difference before spending the money on it. Or possibly just fabricating power steering if there was not much difference with the gear reduction steering. Thanks again for your help.
-
3 pointsMy old C-161 didn't steer all that hard but it needed new front tires so I installed tri-ribs. I was amazed at how much easier it steered. I almost can't tell when the generator or the 54" snow blade are installed. If you need tires, I highly recommend them.
-
3 pointsKeep in mind that I see a lot of 10 hp tractors on plow days plowing. I would think, as long as you don't go over a 10 inch plow, it should do fine, unless soil conditions are severe.
-
3 pointsWill do! I like my chances on it--heavy tractor even without plowing weights, high clearance (with little underneath to grab bean or corn trash, hydro lift, tool box to keep adjusting wrenches, etc, and the list could go on. My biggest concern is whether or not the k241 will have enough grunt. I know it will be fine for garden plowing but not sure about the field--we'll see...
-
3 pointsHere's a couple better pics... The paint isn't quite as nice as it looks in these pics but it is in about perfect shape for a plow rig. I can honestly say that this is one of the most comfortable GT's I've driven and I'm amazed how stout it is! We made it home safely and I tried to outrun the mosquitoes in my yard but they soon won and I was forced to go inside!
-
2 pointsI am almost finished redoing a 953 that has been in my family since very early in its life. I have been searching for the factory headlight housings for appx 1 year. Hoping to make its first show at the end of this month but I cannot locate these darn housings. Any one have ideas. I did buy new lenses off of glen but no housings to put them on. Thanks in advance For any help!
-
2 pointsHowever, many K241's were embossed with the number K301 on the crankcase since both engines were the same casting. Only true way of knowing is to measure the bore.
-
2 pointsI have a 16 hp Kohler (on a C160) that was the same color of blue, and the guy told me his dad had replaced the original engine.....but he also told me other things that just weren't true!
-
2 pointsYou would have to remove the spindles, cut or grind enough material from the top of the axle to compensate for the bearing and washer then put the bearing and washer on the spindles and reinstall them.
-
2 pointsThat mower deck has the cast iron pulleys and the blade spindles are superior to the aluminum ones that followed IMO. The center drive pulley is getting very hard to find replacements for and get out your wallet. It took me a year to locate one. Some people think that the blades are NLA for the deck, but aftermarket supplies them. I have a 12 [and also just got a 14] auto and would not soon part with them.
-
2 pointstake red bracket off by pulley it should say something like k321 k301 or something
-
2 pointsI see a Wheel Horse disc... Wheel Horse (Brinly) slot hitch cultivator and plow... (presumably also Wheel Horse/Brinly.) The mid-mount blade looks to be Simplicity to me. They are very heavily made blades. No idea who/what made that brush mower. Haven't seen one like that. The framework looks a little light to be running in front of a GT... maybe homemade from an early Bachtold or Roof?
-
2 pointsI just put the steering reduction on my 520, and with the tri-ribs it steers super easy. I hooked the plow blade up and didn't even notice it was on, but then it's not super heavy to begin with. It was relatively easy to put on, had to take some parts off to get in but not bad.....

2 pointsGood luck KC. I hope you get 'er started. Thanks 953. A bit more than I bargained for but what a resource! please continue to post suggestions. I, like most, got her to tinker with. Didn't run at first. Tinkered away and pop she fired. Never did get much more out it than a quick spin around the yard before I tore it down to the chassis. She's nearly back together now. Cleaned and pretty again. Well pretty-er at least. Refurbished, restored, whatever. Haven't touched the engine other than taking it off in the process. Now I'm putting the ignition and fuel system back on and thought maybe a bit more power might be in order. I'm not a mechanic but sure can tinker! My thinking is if I could get it to run after god knows how long then maybe I can get it to run better too... I'll try the basics, like the engine manual for proper timing and settings first. Sounds simple, throw a bit more fuel at it. I know that usually means the other systems should be upped too. Kinda hoping someone goes, " here, do this(x)" and presto, its more better faster. Anyone got a magic ward for rent? randy
-
2 pointsPersonally,I'd keep them all. It's only money and we're here on earth only for a visit. Each tractor you mention will have a specific use in your yard.I have a couple D series.I have 4 or 5 C-195's.Any part I've ever needed,I find right here in the classified section,or that big on-line auction site.Ya just gotta be patient when looking for parts.Nice thing about owning multiple tractors is that when one is down and waiting for parts, you have others to use.Good luck.I'd love to have the 195 with loader that you're talking about.

2 pointsThanks Tom ...awesome Wow even more awesome now that I watched it on a big screen here at the shop! At the 1:41 mark you can see Cindy sweeping out the back of the hauler! 21.55 Dan followed by me then Tom up to the announcer!
-
2 pointsYes, the chains and wheel weights might add another $ 100, but if you try to price the unit too high most people will be turned off. The average home owner looking for a mower/blower will hesitate to pay that much for a 44 year old machine and most of us who have several of them don't need another deck and blower so they add a marginal amount to the package price. You could look on Craig's list in your area to get an idea of what other brands are bringing and price it accordingly.

2 pointsFound this D-160 sitting in an overgrown junk yard in east Texas slowly sinking in the dirt/weeds. I really regret not having taken a picture of it - no seat, no gas tank, the most horrible cobbled together front spindles, Ross steering bad and of course flat tires. But.... It had a factory replacement Kohler 341 in the Kohler gray paint sitting in it that was still clean. The guy wanted $300 and was NOT gonna budge, so with some misgivings I brought it home. Cleaned out the carb and fed it some gas and cranked right up and ran like the new engine that it was, and, it drove out with the Sundstrand hydro working like a champ!! This is it after I got a seat, tank, and using what spare parts I had on hand got some front tires on and the Ross steering rebuilt, with some new ags on the back, and the silly thing ran great --- but geez, it sure was ugly!! So I been using it around the yard pulling a trailer and using the 3point, handy accessory that!! but I been wanting to help its appearance all along and since things had slowed down lately I decide it was time. My first concern was getting tires on the front that were more suitable for a worker so I posted here on the forum about the possibility of getting 10"ers on the front so with a couple suggestions and some research I put together some much nicer front 'shoes' The Sundstrand hydro motor had an oil leak that was wanting to get worse so I decided that when I went into it I'd go on and get the whole thing spruced up. Turned out pretty nice.... I LOVE my D's!! (Dont Terrys decals look GOOOOOD!!!)
-
2 pointsThe garden is growing, almost out of control. Already canned pickles, getting ready to start on green beans and peppers and tomatoes shouldn't be too far off.
-
2 pointsFirst thing that comes to my mind is the contacts inside the ignition switch are bad., Power should be at the coil in both "start" and "run". If you are losing power to the coil when the switch is turned to start, you have a bad switch. A new set of points wouldn't hurt anything either.

1 pointThat is the one for the 520-HC tractor model shown in the original parts list. The on-line lists show both but fail to identify what tractor uses which one. Garry
