HERE IS THE ANSWER FOLKS: These two brackets were used on the 953 bottom seat and were positioned to hold the seat bottom in place. I never saw one on a 1054 so maybe they learned the bottom seat did not move very much. Three wood screws on each bracket went into the plywood seat bottom material. I do not have a picture with them on the original seat bottom I bought several years ago as it was all deteriorated.

Your left the factory as a 12 volt, If it has a 6 volt battery that is incorrect.

Well said! I didn't get a chance to be with my father or have any kind of last conversation but I did have the privilege of getting a last hug and an "I love you son" to which I answered the same. Had I known the next day was his last, I would have put off everything to be with him. My best to you and may God pour out his blessings on your family in some way, even when we don't get it at the moment. Take care my friend, Richie

Found this D-160 sitting in an overgrown junk yard in east Texas slowly sinking in the dirt/weeds. I really regret not having taken a picture of it - no seat, no gas tank, the most horrible cobbled together front spindles, Ross steering bad and of course flat tires. But.... It had a factory replacement Kohler 341 in the Kohler gray paint sitting in it that was still clean. The guy wanted $300 and was NOT gonna budge, so with some misgivings I brought it home. Cleaned out the carb and fed it some gas and cranked right up and ran like the new engine that it was, and, it drove out with the Sundstrand hydro working like a champ!! This is it after I got a seat, tank, and using what spare parts I had on hand got some front tires on and the Ross steering rebuilt, with some new ags on the back, and the silly thing ran great --- but geez, it sure was ugly!! So I been using it around the yard pulling a trailer and using the 3point, handy accessory that!! but I been wanting to help its appearance all along and since things had slowed down lately I decide it was time. My first concern was getting tires on the front that were more suitable for a worker so I posted here on the forum about the possibility of getting 10"ers on the front so with a couple suggestions and some research I put together some much nicer front 'shoes' The Sundstrand hydro motor had an oil leak that was wanting to get worse so I decided that when I went into it I'd go on and get the whole thing spruced up. Turned out pretty nice.... I LOVE my D's!! (Dont Terrys decals look GOOOOOD!!!)

Reminds me of the story about the guy at the airline ticket counter purchasing a ticket to Atlanta from Los Angeles. He had three bags along for the flight and he told the attendant, "I want the large bag sent to New York, the middle bag to Miami and the smaller bag sent to New Orleans." The attendant smiled and sweetly replied, "Sir, I can not comply with your request, because it is airline requirements that we send you luggage only to the destination of your ticket." The customer commented, "I don't know why not, you did the last time I made this flight!"

Tyler, the one thing I feel your father needs now is reassurance that you and the rest of the family will do well after he passes. That and the fact that all of you love him will make him rest a bit more easily. He has been your provider and protector all your life, let him know that he raised you well and the family will miss him greatly, but will make it. Dear God, Help Bill Elschide discover your peace. Let him receive your comfort. Help him to be at rest knowing that you care for him, and that you love him. Calm his soul as he move into the afterlife. May he spend eternity with you; may he live forever in your presence. Amen.

I am almost finished redoing a 953 that has been in my family since very early in its life. I have been searching for the factory headlight housings for appx 1 year. Hoping to make its first show at the end of this month but I cannot locate these darn housings. Any one have ideas. I did buy new lenses off of glen but no housings to put them on. Thanks in advance For any help!

Finally pics of my first wheel horse. Last pic is the new friends I found while clearing out those black berries. My first thought was hey theres a grey ball in that bush," OH &*T&". Luckily I saw them before they saw me.
  15. 2 points
Yes, the chains and wheel weights might add another $ 100, but if you try to price the unit too high most people will be turned off. The average home owner looking for a mower/blower will hesitate to pay that much for a 44 year old machine and most of us who have several of them don't need another deck and blower so they add a marginal amount to the package price. You could look on Craig's list in your area to get an idea of what other brands are bringing and price it accordingly.
  16. 2 points
You have a 1973 and from the looks of the photos it seems to be in nice condition. Once it is running and the transmission can be proven to function properly I would think It might bring about $ 700 as a package deal.

Both the c-195 and the D use a hydro drive. You mentioned using a Woods finishing mower with the c or d , I maybe mistaken but I think the rear PTO 's on the C and D's run at a different RPM than most tractors the use the Woods mowers. I am sure folks with more knowledge will be along soon to answer your questions. Sorry I just reread the thread where you said the D200 can with the Woods mower. Price wise you really lucked out. I know C195 don't come along often and with a loader that is unusual. I would love to have a tractor with a loader. I know loader come up for sale sometimes but they are not cheap.Couple of guys on the forum have build loaders for the their tractors. Building a loader is well beyond my skill set.

Welcome aboard Dave! I believe my '86 310-8 has cotter pins also, but sorry, it's just too hot right now for me to go check. My parts manual shows that pin as a 5/32" x 1-1/4", you'll probably want to replace it rather than reusing the old one. Before you take the wheel off, check for end play (with that side of the front end jacked up) by pulling and pushing the wheel along the axle. There are shims available if there's too much play. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the axle is 3/4" diameter. Basically, if you can fit a .015" shim in there, there's too much play. Also check the rubber/plastic hub caps, and replace them if you need to. Glen Pettit (one of our vendors here) has very nice hub caps and upper spindle caps for sale. They're a little pricey, but I have them on both of my tractors and can tell you they're excellent quality and do a great job of keeping the axles and upper spindle areas clean. And finally, look in our manuals section if you need manuals, there's a lot of information available here. ... Back to your original problem, how bad are the tires?

I have a D160 with a loader that I just picked up. Also have a C195 and plan to put the loader on it. Really like the C195.
  22. 2 points
If that is indeed a C-195 , it's on odd animal and with a loader even more odd . Everything is heavier on that C than a normal 10-16hp model - it's built much closer to a D series than anything else and if you have a chance to grab it - I wouldn't hesitate . Price is what it is , there aren't many of them and the loader is where the real money is if everything is working and in good shape . The D is a bit heavier and built pretty heavy all around but they have their own issues - so it's a toss up as to which one to own , but I'd do anything I could to own both as they are some brutal workers . Just be prepared for some expensive parts as their numbers are low and a lot of stuff is discontinued . If you don't buy it , let others know so someone else can get it so it isn't scrapped or something stupid done to it - that one would be a restore really worth something . Research that model deeply , I think in our manuals section there is a manual for the Super C-195...worth a read . Sarge

Well , it's quite a trip , and we're gonna need a lot bigger jack to pick it up . This was a simple 8x8 shed that a previous neighbor built and had used 5 - 2x4's as floor joists . Needless to say , the little Green lawn tractor was fine , but when the 16 Auto got parked in there , it just kept going dowwwnnnn....grrr . Wasn't a fun job and as most sheds the floor sheathing was under the wall plates - so I cut it apart with a sawzall and angle grinder , added some supports and jacked the whole thing up off the floor . The D came in really handy to help remove the floor , lift one end of the shed and other tasks . The replacement could hold my pickup easily - so that won't happen again . Had to do most of the work alone , but I got it done and only had one incident where it fell off the blocks due to a heavy storm/wind here - that ruined one whole day picking it back up . Sundstrand pump carnage - Some lessons come harder than others - buy you learn either way . Sarge

When it comes to pure lugging power, if that K361 is in good shape, it will be hard to stop the 16! Given that you have a good drive belt, decent AG's, and enough weight, that sounds like a plowing machine. Another cool oil thing about taking a tractor to Symco, is that you get in free as an exhibitor--all three days! I've included a couple of pics from Symco 2016... My dad with his 875 "Iron Horse" Adam and his cool custom tricycle Cub (his girls love tractor shows)! Some plow and show tractors on display. a 128 plow rig My kids love all the fun and interesting interactive stuff to do at Symco. My youngest and I getting ready to go plow on GhostRider (314-8). As to your topic, I'm partial to the 656 but I do like the idea of both--if you have the room and can keep the peace at home!!!

So I've torn down 4 pumps previously and I may not do it same as others but it seems to work for me. The pictures tell most of the story. I cleaned the dirt and grease as best I could and I start by removing the cam assembly first: From the side, you can see the pin that needs to be driven out. once you drive the pin out, the cast piece slides off and you then get to the three retaining screws/bolts. Once you remove cam housing, there are some oings and a triangular washer. These prints are almost impossible to find from TORO/Wheelhorse. A few have managed to get replacements from hydraulic shops and Napa. There is a steel spacer that has to come off. This pump had some minor shaft corrosion. Once I cleaned it off, I tilted unit and it slid to where I could pull it free. Then flip it over and start removing the side cover. This will allow you to drive the shafts out once you remove the squash plate pins. Next remove qty 4, 9/16" bolts that hold pump housing to the main assembly. It may require some gentle tapping to break free the gasket but it will now come free. Next drive the shaft pins down enough that the shafts slide in and out. Then remove the shafts and squash plate assembly. Note that the pins remain in place. Later to reassemble I pull them the rest of the way and start them before sliding the shafts back in place to make it easier to finish driving them in. You can now see the retaining ring that holds the main pump shaft and bearing in place. Remove the ring. Once removed, I push the shaft and bearing back through. Then I push the seal through. Much easier than trying to pull seal from outside. all the parts arranged to make reassembly easier. Then I polish the brass. I do each one, then re-insert to keep the order correct. I start with 220 and work my way to 1500 grit. Before: After: Assembly for another day:-)

Just as an example - pulled the contents of my small shed on my 6.5'x12' utility trailer , or about 5,000lbs of stuff including the sand blaster and all it's blasting media (450lbs of it) . D-180 pulled it fine at first , until the front half was in the street to make the lap to position the trailer to re-load the stuff in the shed - and promptly broke the engine coupler/pump shaft on the Sundstrand pump . Now , I've got a crippled tractor with a stuck tow valve , and a heavy trailer sitting on the 3pt hitch , raised up nice and high . So, get the High Lift jack out of the other shed , lift up the trailer and get it off the tractor - check . Drove a 1/4" hitch pin through the hole that was drilled in the coupler/shaft last winter the last time it broke/stripped to replace the grade 8 bolt so I could limp it out back , vibrating like mad the whole time at idle....check. Jump in the Dodge pickup , go around out front and back up to the trailer - check . Trailer too high and Hi-Lift is in the way , lower trailer jack and remove Hi-lift - check . Start backing up truck watching the hitch in the rear camera , almost got under the ball but the ball seems to be moving away to one side ....wtf ? Check Mate....duh . The front frame and tongue of the trailer couldn't take the weight sitting off on one member where the jack was holding it up (2x2 angle iron , really ??) - so the whole thing slowly twisted until the trailer jack was laying on it's side , on the ground . Stand there for a minute and assess the situation , utter several choice words and drive chocks under front/rear of the trailer tires . Go back to shed , get the stupid Hi-Lift and pick up the nose of the now mangled trailer - check . Take 3 attempts to hook up the truck , got it the 3rd time and set it on the ball hitch , latched it down and removed the Hi-Lift - then tossed the jack on the trailer and leave rubber halfway around the block with the Hemi - check . Back what's left of the trailer , and the slew of stuff strewn around it up to the shed - time for a beer or three and reflect on my own stupidity . Unload the trailer into the shed , reminding myself the whole time just how much this stuff weighs and swearing heavily the whole time - wife asks at dinner what all the commotion was about - "don't ask , you don't want to know" .... Waiting for the local steel supply to get my 2x3x1/4 rectangular tubing to build a new tongue along with a new coupler - and a much heavier jack . Pretty sure when I'm done that will never bend again....lesson learned . Still working on the D and it's pump problem , that turned out to be a whole other can of worms...ugh . Btw- shed has a very nice , stout new floor under it , which is what started all this in the first place . Sarge

First thing that comes to my mind is the contacts inside the ignition switch are bad., Power should be at the coil in both "start" and "run". If you are losing power to the coil when the switch is turned to start, you have a bad switch. A new set of points wouldn't hurt anything either.

If you don't want both, then I would vote for the 656. Bigger tractor that is more versatile when it comes to attachments. BTW any chance that you'll make it to the Symco thresheree 7/28-7/30? We'll be doing a little GT plowing & The Nitty Gritty Dirt band is playing Fri. night.

Fred, I hear you on the decks........ I went to make a deck run of about eighty miles last fall so all my Horses would have decks. And then the guy threw in a little 1057 roller for free. i figured it for a nice parts tractor at least. Now it wears a little $99.00 Predator engine up front and with only new axle seals on the hydro Sunstrand, the little bugger is a tractor again. So what I am saying is that your herd will never be balanced. I just saw a 12 horse with an extra rebuilt engine for it and deck for$350. Trying to forget about it. Just think how cool that little 1057 would be with a Kohler in it..... .

You just need to register when you get there. Only thing that you need to call a head for is camping, but I assume you'll be driving home because you live so close. @WHX11 Just a heads up, admission to the show will be free to you & spouse as an exhibitor. But they stick you for $40 for camping.

Gas Gauge: - Yes there is a sender that is pretty easy to get to if you remove the fender. I would recommend you do this and tighten all the transmission mounting bolts (even some very hard to reach) as well as clean all the crud from the hydro fins. Reverse Warning Light, Gas Gauge, PTO: -all may be wiring issues (specifically connectors or safety switches). Download the manuals and look for the connectors. I would recommend pulling all the connections, cleaning with contact spray and a brush and putting dielectric grease on and reassembling. I solved a few problems this way. Gas: Uses more than the singles, but less than the Onan! It took getting used to, but I absolutely love my 522xi. Best tractor to mow with of all the horses. If only I could find a decent mower deck I would be set.

Believed to be a 67 LawnRanger . This is part of the treo of tractors the cuz and I purchased on the phone unseen while we were on our way to the Big Show . It sat in a garage for at least 20yrs before it was pulled out . Just the way we like them . Cuz did really good on this one . One repaint , no rips or tears in seat , though there's a ring in the seat . Other than the paint it looks to be a all original tractor . It started on the first pull when the cuz got it out for pics ... !!!

My C-121 was mounted with that same anti-vibration mount. Replaced the engine with the regular big block pan and discarded the anti-vibration mount. The smaller pan is required for the anti-vibration mount. Also had to find the plate that bolts to the frame to hold the bottom of the hoop. It bolts to the same spot as the attach-a-matic (the two bolts into the frame below the hoop in your pic). Someone took the oil pan off the bad engine and put it on the new engine so it would fit in that mount. The pan in the pic didn't come on that engine. I believe the green is a replacement engine (I have a green 16hp, purchased from a neighbor who had that new replacement engine since the early 80's and put it on my 312-8). Hope that helps.

Pull the cap off the end of the spindle , start digging in all of that grease - should be a pin , bolt or whatever was used on these later models to hold the wheel and bearings onto the spindle , simple . Keep the dirt out while repairing the tire and replace it as you found it if the bearings are in good order - otherwise get replacements and reassemble . Sarge

Tuff decision . I sure like the sound of a big single Kohler engine though.
