Found this D-160 sitting in an overgrown junk yard in east Texas slowly sinking in the dirt/weeds. I really regret not having taken a picture of it - no seat, no gas tank, the most horrible cobbled together front spindles, Ross steering bad and of course flat tires. But.... It had a factory replacement Kohler 341 in the Kohler gray paint sitting in it that was still clean. The guy wanted $300 and was NOT gonna budge, so with some misgivings I brought it home. Cleaned out the carb and fed it some gas and cranked right up and ran like the new engine that it was, and, it drove out with the Sundstrand hydro working like a champ!! This is it after I got a seat, tank, and using what spare parts I had on hand got some front tires on and the Ross steering rebuilt, with some new ags on the back, and the silly thing ran great --- but geez, it sure was ugly!! So I been using it around the yard pulling a trailer and using the 3point, handy accessory that!! but I been wanting to help its appearance all along and since things had slowed down lately I decide it was time. My first concern was getting tires on the front that were more suitable for a worker so I posted here on the forum about the possibility of getting 10"ers on the front so with a couple suggestions and some research I put together some much nicer front 'shoes' The Sundstrand hydro motor had an oil leak that was wanting to get worse so I decided that when I went into it I'd go on and get the whole thing spruced up. Turned out pretty nice.... I LOVE my D's!! (Dont Terrys decals look GOOOOOD!!!)

My good friend @squonk (Mike) mailed me an envelope after the Big Show...contents unknown at the time. He kept asking me if I had received it. I had not. We checked the address for errors...all good. Mike said that he had mailed it about 10 days ago...he could have mailed it by Pony Express and I would have gotten it sooner. We were just about to give up, and I got the envelope in the mail today. Just wanted to let everyone know that the Post Office is still tops on my list. You have to check out the plastic bag that the envelope came in. I want to thank Mike and everyone else at the show for making me feel like I was there this year...including Howard @857 horse . Thank You

This is always a nice show since it's 100% GT's. Lots of Wheel Horses there this year, more than double last year. Quite a few RS members there as well. Seems to be an annual pilgrimage for a few folks. Among the high lights was Dan @Achto getting best in show runner up with His Mclean! More Pics to come as the day permits. Enjoy! @PeacemakerJack on his new to him 953!

I'm sure many of you have heard someone in your life saying, "you should do this, you'd really enjoy it!" Sometimes it takes years for that to finally happen and once it does, you see that they were right! That was me with this show...My cousin Mike has been coming to this for since it's inception and tells me every year that I'd enjoy it. This year I didn't have a choice because I was picking up a 953 from @Shynon and so it was a sure thing. What a show! I couldn't believe the variety of tractors and antiques. All the popular brands were there in large quantities but so were many unique tractors like @Achto and his McLean and this Beaver... It never ceases to amaze me how simple these early tractors were and how rapidly they changed and progressed, if the company was able to stay in business. Dan's toys! Jim had a great display and seemed to have fun running around on one of his @WHX11 tractors throughout the day! Thank you Jim and the Mrs. For watching my boys a couple of different times throughout the day when they were tired of walking. They loved hanging out by you guys under your canopy tent! My boys in front of another nice row of Horses. There were lots of common tractors like this JD 140. All kinds of fun stuff in the swap area. The boys loved these old kids helmets. The rivalry continues... These are a few of my Cousin Mikes tractors. He always brings at least four down. I loved this rig! Every time I saw it, I laughed... Cool case custom built orchard tractor copy! This guy does amazing work. My dad and mom were at the Princeton Flee market in the morning(not far away) and I had been sending some pics to them of the show. They decided to come over in the afternoon. So we walked around together And this is where I had the 953 sitting. Dad saw it and was asking some questions about it. I didn't tell him that it was mine/soon to be his. He thought it was a really cool tractor and ahead of its time for a 1963 model. I can't wait to see his face when he realizes that it is his! A nice collection of New Holland tractors. Lots of Cubs too. I hooked up with some of my cub friends I've met out at the plow days as well. All in all it was a really fun day and I plan to come to this show in the future. Next year, I'll bring a few more tractors along with me and hopefully my whole family. I highly suggest you put this show on your "I should go to this one" list because I think it is only going to continue to grow...

Well i have to congratulate dan @Achto on his lawn and garden tractor magazine mention on facebook. I had the honor to attend the show also was a blast wish i could have stayed longer but the kids where getting tired. I have to say couldnt have had a better day turn out was awesome with 741 tractors what i been hearing. Had grandpa jim @WHX11 help with kids with tub rides, talked with josh @PeacemakerJack wish we could have talked more but still was nice seeing him and @stevasaurus you where in are thoughts and where missed. But if anyone gets the chance to come to this event it is biggg and much recommend.

Your stealing my thunder Josh! That's ok...I got the funny pictures! The Beaver was one of my favs as well. BTW that's @wheelhorseman wife on the toilet tractor with Lowell keeping a close eye on! Guess she really had to go! Always nice visiting with them. Dan explaining his Mclean at the parade! Dan throwing his belt just afterwards! Behind him and mentioned in the other Portage thread Mr. Hill who also was a runner up.

The attached manual will give you all the information you are looking for. As the oil level is low and you can't be sure how fresh it is I would suggest draining it and replacing with fresh gear oil (90 wt.). The drain plug is flush with the bottom of the trans and uses an allen wrench, jack up the front of the tractor to be sure it drains completely. The dip stick tube is the fill tube; if you put a wire or screwdriver along side the funnel to provide a vent path while filling it will go in better. Hope this helps.

This is my tiller steer RR-46 I've never seen another one. Does anyone else have one?

Some other show madness...Dan pulling wheelies on the rat rod & nite parade! Oh sorry that was Dan doing chain pile which often involved wheelies!
  15. 8 points
Ok now for the chain pile contest... The idea here is to forward/reverse the chain into the smallest pile in two minutes or under ...simple right? Not! required more tractor handling skills that you would imagine. Fast hydros rule this game although some guys had a nice one with a stick. A 30" pile or under is considered respectable, 24 or better your in the running... Dan had the money pile with a 23 1/2 incher on his 1076. We did this Friday nite for quite awhile then someone's alcohol infused brain had the idea to do it on Saturday after the parade and charge a buck to get in with the pot being split between the winner and donating towards show costs. Didn't pan out as well as we like with entrants but still managed to raise 11 clams for the WW II museum downtown. (Dan graciously donated his winnings!) Mike @prondzy trying his hand on a nice new to him tractor he scored at the show!

It's about time! ( It's about space) ! I would check that envelope for Ruskie fingerprints.🇱🇮 My guess the envelope got damaged and they put it in the doggie bag. Next time I'll use a padded envelope. And your welcome Steve! I only wish I could have gone out and gotten you!

Glad you got it , the post office strikes again. Two years ago I purchased a part for my plow from a Red square member and he shipped by our friends at the post office. The package was misplaced and ended somewhere in Baltimore ( I think) , anyway it took almost a month to get to me. You don't want to know the condition of the box . Glad Mike did not mail you "Steve on a stick " , he would have ended up in the ER. I see from the Portage pictures that Steve on a stick will travel long distances for a meal.

Finally have my '72 Raider 10 finished. She is a working tractor so not so pretty. Re-ringed engine, rebuilt deck, and other odds and ends. Now my 953 has a mate. Who knows with the two of them maybe a C160 will appear.....

Thanks to everyone that sent pictures of this show. Looks like Steve on a Stick had a great time.I as wondering where Steve was. The last time he was sighted was at West Point , I was afraid that he had landed in the Stockade for drinking on duty. That looks like a great show , unfortunately toooooooooooooo far for this ole goat to travel.

Jim!! @KC9KAS had started a post on this show also, but something must have went wrong with it and it was removed. If he could try some of his pics on this post, that would be great. I'll post some more pics tonight.

In my opinion, if you fill through the plug on the side, or use that as your gauge, you will be too low on oil. To prove this, I filled a completely dry 8-speed with the recommended 2 quarts of oil, then removed the side plug and quite a lot of oil ran out. Best method I have found is to fill through the dip stick tube or shifter hole (with shifter removed) using a venting method, until you reach the full mark on the dipstick. Filling through the shifter hole is faster, and it allows you to vent through the dip stick tube. It also reminds you to replace your shifter boot.

to the Bob. Good advice above from Richard and Craig. I would also remove the plug that you refer to on the lower left, and fill till the oil shows at the hole.

Finally got the engine in my daughters suburban after a year. Few small things left but end is in sight now.
  38. 4 points
@AchtoThanks for the great pictures of the unusual tractors. First I ever saw any of the ones you captured.
  39. 4 points
I was able to get a pic of @Shynon doing the chain pile. Showing us how it's done with a gear jammer. This rat rod Suburban with the massive pipes looked pretty cool. As much as I like Wheel Horse's, I like to get pic's of customs and tractors that I don't see a lot of. I'll start with this custom built Oliver 2255. The detail on this tractor was incredible. This Amigo caught my eye. While they have steering brakes, it does not have a clutch of any kinda. Instead it has a shuttle shift trans. This is the only Economy on tracks that I have ever seen. Not sure if it was built buy them, but it was branded & sold buy them. This Gravely built by Studebaker caught my eye. The fiberglass body gives it a 1950's space age look. I'm not exactly sure what this is, but I sure liked the dune buggy look. One of my McLean's relatives was even there. This is a McLean Big Wheel. Single rear wheel drive with one speed forward and no reverse. Oh yea, & what did this company have against brakes?!? That's right no brakes on these things either, must have been where the engineering or money ran out. "Steve on a stick" photo bombing another pic. Sure missed ya @stevasaurus, hopefully you'll be able to make a few more shows next year. I used to miss this show do to a traditional family vacation. I had such a great time at the show that I think it's time for a new tradition.

I have to get a written permission slip from "she who must be obeyed " to got to the Big Show in Pa. So I know Portage is out , plus I don't like to drive . Old eyes and too many pain pills a day.

Here's a couple of pics of my B-80 I have on file. Should be about the same. Some of the springs are different on some models.

Can't wait to see the one of me and Steve (on a Steeek)!
  44. 4 points
Sorry Jim! apparently we both had the same idea...AT THE SAME TIME! Maybe the moderators can combine our threads... congrats Dan on that runner-up title for best of show. That is really saying something when you consider the volume of tractors in the show! You deserve it though. A very unique and rare tractor that you worked tirelessly on. The results speak for themselves. Make sure one of you guys talks about the chain pile contest...

Be careful with the oven idea. You may end up cooking dinner from now on!
  46. 4 points
Ed, if you would mow the lawn more frequently you wouldn't have to bale it!
  47. 4 points
First thing I would try (be sure the wife isn't home at the time) is to lay them on a pan and heat them up to about 400 F in an oven, take them outside and load the ends up with paraffin wax on all sides of the ball sockets. One at a time clamp them in a vice or to a solid object and move the balls as far as you can using a 5/8" rod a couple of feet long. I did this with a top link from a 3 point and it worked. Don't tell the wife.
  48. 3 points
Thanks Glenn, good to know you'll post my bail if I ever get caught stealin horses.
  49. 3 points
Can also remove a bolt or two from the trans top to vent it.
  50. 3 points
If you were to build a mounting bracket on a and attach the pump handle to an off set rod attached to a wheel (sort of like a crank shaft) you could have a ride-on-sprayer!
