14 pointsA few of mine.... The plow frame mounted tiller and ball hitch. The plow frame stabilizer. The sun top. The mole killer. Deck roller springs. Forward/reverse hydro foot control. Anti scalping rollers on 42" decks. Heat collector for snow blower cab. Snow blower auger rubber paddles. Snow blower chute controls.

14 pointsI have rear fenders that are modifed {widened} and able to accommodate 6 tail lights, with reverse lights in the middle two. The chrome exhaust tips are only for looks.
-
14 pointsGreat idea for the plow/blower light, but I think some of the models in the 1960's came equipped with a 12V plug adaptor, or as it was known then - cigarette lighter. For me the best Mod has been buying a front hitch that just drops into the tach-o-matic. Way easier to move a trailer around while facing it and with the pivot point right by the steering wheels. It's just like picking it up by the tongue and walking with it, except way easier on the back!

11 pointsI like my hydraulic lift I built out of necessity to replace the manual lift on my raider 6 speed. Currently being modified and upgraded but I have used it for implements, dragging stumps and logs, and as a tow tractor.
-
10 pointsI was starting to load the trailer this morning and I thought, why push the 401 up the ramp if I can get it running. The previous owner said it hadn't run for about three years, so I spent an hour or so cleaning the points and carburetor, draining the stale gas, and putting in a new plug, The 4 grandson come over on Wednesdays, and the 3 youngest took time from basketball to watch old grandpa work on the K91. Little did I know that my wife was also in the audience with my phone taking pictures. And with that, success! Runs great, purrs like a kitten. She's also pretty handy with the video as well. Looks like I'm going to be asking a little more for this one at the show.

10 pointsWrapping the front tires with #40 roller chain for snow blowing and snow plowing. Much better steering on ice and snow. Added weight to the snow plow frame back at the rear. It kills 2 birds with added weight to the rear tires and to the plow blade for better scraping. The tow ball on the front is useful so I bolt one on to the loader bucket when ever it's needed. No need to get my lazy butt out of the seat to move trailers.

9 pointsGot to thinking - What are your favorite modifications that you have made to your WH tractor(s) that made them more usable, practical or just plain better? My goal with this thread is simple - Perhaps a bit of bragging by you all will help others who are seeking similar solutions and just haven't figured it out or thought of it yet... Of course - include pictures please... Two of my simple but favorites: A power plug for easy plug in power and a rear spot light for night time snow plowing...

8 pointsThis is easy, loader on my 1277. Its as handy as a shirt with two pockets! Randy
-
7 pointsWOW! Keep them coming!!! I am especially interested and intrigued by the custom stuff that stretches the utility of these machines even further than they were designed... I must say - I am really awed by the ingenuity and outright genius you guys display...
-
7 pointsGreat way to get these ideas out there for everyone to share and use. Thanks for starting this thread Jim, @SylvanLakeWH

6 pointsI wanted to be the first to tell you that I have launched a new website that is appealing to the eye, easy to navigate, has an easy checkout process, and is user friendly to everyone. My new online store is Wheel Horse Parts and More. This is a new adventure for me and my web designers are asking for individual feedback as we continue to tweak the new site. In case you did not notice, I have made a slight change to my username, which is now "wheelhorseman." I invite each one of you to visit my new website. Here is a http://www.wheelhorsepartsandmore.com

6 pointsI didn't make it myself, but the best thing I have done to my 416-H horse is to install Matt's foot pedal motion control.
-
6 pointsEd has offered up a myriad of meritorious modifications that he has crafted, but for me the Front End Loader is the biggest work (back) saver I have ever found.

6 pointsI went from a zero turn to a 310-8 with a 36" deck so I could have more seat time this year. My wife thinks I'm crazy! Randy
-
5 pointsAnd! Matching socks and hat too! Red is for the blood we shed.

5 pointsIf it is indeed a 704, then it's a 1964. Wheel Horse's numbering system in the early 60s was like this. The first number was the horsepower, the second number was either "0" indicating on most models, pull start (there are some exceptions), or a "5" which is for electric start, and the last number was the year. So "4" in 704 meant 1964. Starting in 1968, Wheel Horse done away with the numbering system and started using names like Commando, Charger, Raider, etc.

3 pointsThere are a couple different dealers selling surplus ex military genset Yanmar L70AE engines on ebay. These are variable speed, tapered output shaft( adapters to 1" and 1 1/8th are on ebay as well). They have 24vt starters and duel intake grid heaters. You can also find 12vdc starters there. Even with replacing the starter and the shaft adapter, your well under what that engine retailed for new, and less than the clone! These are 6.5hp, so equil to a 7-10hp gas engine in the power dept. I am putting one in my Commando 8. One dealer has 100 of them to sell. No muffler but the one on the engine normaly fouls the underhood fuel tank on the tractor anyways. Just a heads up as these can be hard to come by, espically genuine Yanmar. Mike

3 pointsI just pick up on a wheel horse 704 in not bad conditions. my friend said it a 1962 but I said it a 1968. it has a kolier motor I think a 7hp and I pick up on the snow blower attachment without the chute.if anyone care to chat about the two let talk

3 pointsFound this jewel the other day, looks rough, but runs and cut great, a no brainer at 100.00.The 16hp onan runs great. Changed the oil & filter and mowed 1 acre. It did good.

3 pointsWe assume,,,that Ed K_____ll wi;; be bringing the Rottotiller,,front yard driller,,belt driven thing to the show,,,,,,, it can be displayed in the (((( Evolution of Cultiviccation ))))) section in the lower field,,,,, and based on the vote in this thread,,,,,,,,,It looks like Front end Loaders/Jonny Buckets,,,should be the feature tractors next year. We don't need a 3rd year of Modifieds,,,,,,,,, just IMHO Howard in Va

3 pointslove the tiller design Ed Kennell designed. you have any other pics of that Ed i sure would like to do that to my horse and get rid of the yellow and white one i have

3 pointsA seat, any seat will do that has some spring to it for the models with a solid one. This is from a MTD and is raised up enough that I can get on the machine. It is one of those ugly "git -er -done" projects born of necessity that just hang around and people make fun of. Also adding some strength to the transmission tunnel by adding angle iron frame to the top at the rear. Probably the only spot on our tractors that is under engineered. Both the 520 and the Raider 10 were cracked on the seat and pan mounts. Probably happened because that one farmer decided to keep his side ditch mowed, and everyone else did the same Leaning sideways on the seat while mowing to keep upright is hard on the little bit of metal where everything is attached Oh. And Ed just made my day with the Mole Killer

3 pointsI see them sell for 200 all the way up to 300 at the Big Show quite easily. Maybe guys are willing to spend more there? You don't have to deal with shipping and you get to tell everyone you didn't go home empty handed.... If I had a real nice original machine or a mint restored machine that is the seat I would be looking for. I myself would be hesitant to use it on a worker, once it starts to crack its just another seat.. Always nice to preserve what isn't being made anymore but that is just me... The damage to seats seems to be mostly done in the winter when the vinyl is stiff.

3 pointsYou will find new carburetors on that will fit your needs. I got one from seller eprdistribution that came with two choke shafts so it can be used for top choke cable (like yours) or the lower hook up. Works great and cost less than $ 40.
-
2 pointsJust got to thinking, when life is good I mow. And when life is not so good I don't notice when I mow.
-
2 pointsI painted my replacement trans yesterday and let it dry over night, installed it today, ( quite a job my first time swaping a transmission in a wheel horse). I fired up the 753 this evening to test out the trans and all the gears work great. I know the paint color is a little off but it was, more for protection than looks. Am going to try to rebuild the old transmission eventually in case I need it for another horse.

2 pointsPicture time, not much lawn and garden as most made the long haul to Evansville for the big show there. Maybe next year for me if I am able to. Mike

2 pointsI will make you one after the show if we run out Richard. Show price is 40% off website but will need $5 for shipping Thanks
-
2 pointsThanks for the interest. Look in my Raider 12 modifications current build. I think you'll find what you are looking for.

2 pointsHere is the Horse today, awaiting the arrival of FedEx. Since I took the pic, I removed the fuel tank and installed a return line fitting at the top of the tank. And FexEx arrived, took me 30 min to unbox the engine as they incase it in "great stuff" expanding foam! It arrived safe and sound to say the least. I can see that I will have to relocate the battery to the area under the seat to give me the room to line up the crankshaft with the mower PTO. More pics later. Mike

2 pointsThe only resistance is the spring that centers the handle when you release it.

2 pointsLet me know what you turn in the 1/4 mi if you ever run the Malibu. With mostly stock suspension, stock rear and coming off the line from a dead idle I ran a 10.12@138.56 and that was spinning thru 1st and second. It finally hooked in third and I went thru the traps in 5th gear. Never got to run it again since I wouldn't put a cage in it. It was probably a low 9's car if it ever got traction. ET streets 11.5 wide at 9psi still didn't get traction but did manage to stay halfway straight Mileage contributes to seal and gasket leakage was well as clearances. When bearings start to wear oil can and usually does go in different directions. My Z with the LT4 internals had some composite valve covers off the Vette engine it was derived from. They had a simple O-Ring around the outside and despite my fears it never leaked. Oil pressure with high volume high pressure pumps can also vary especially when you blue print the pump. I'm an old racer by the way and have used many tricks over the years.

2 pointsI said be careful that it could, and with "TODAY'S" tight clearances dad's old truck was a 1 owner 2002 4.3L V-6 (with the dreaded plastic covers) nary a leak until the 75,000 mile mark with the 10w40 with Lucas, I had a 2000 4.8L V-8 with close to 250,000 miles on it and was just starting to seep at the valve covers also 5w30 by factory but around 100k mark I used 10w30 high mileage Castrol GTX with the factory ACDELCO filters, therefore from that/my experience the heavier oils will eventually cause the seals/gaskets to erode, not a high performance built engine just a factory tight clearance stocker, in my 406SBC I run a high volume standard pressure oil pump it increases about 10psi/1000rpm to 80/90psi @ 8k, but again I only use 10w30 and no leaks on the old engine for the new one I hand built and clearanced 4-5 years ago and I've owned the Malibu since March '01, Jeff.

2 pointsI recently purchased high back logo seat from eBay for 175. I really thought it would sell for more. 30 bucks for shipping and I had it. Only 3 bids? For a nice no cracks or tears high back seat ! I also paid 300 for one at the big show last year for one that was in mint condition. That one is going on my work horse gt-1800 frame up restoration. As they say they are not making them anymore so......
