9 pointsCourtesy of Squonk I got this last fall but didn't get it set up till now. Finally got around to it...can't mow has been raining sprinkling/raining for days. Also slow worker here. Went with the 42" after dragging a 48SD up to the shop (That D200 with FEL makes moving decks around easier). I had rebuilt the 48 and this front unit will be used on near brush hog duties (Farmall M and 5ft Bush Hog 600 can't get into some places) didn't want to beat up a nice deck and it is only a C141 so I wasn't sure about power. Also to use a 48SD you have to hack away part of the triangular reinforcement plate under the spindles.

6 pointsI removed the plastic cover on the p216 to make it easier to roll the engine through by hand.Just as he flywheel started to move I heard a scraping noise from the tin area.I removed the screen and found this.

5 pointsFound this on CL this morning, couldn't pass it up....(this has got to stop). Came with front deck carrier, 48" bagger/recycler deck, (no bagger or blower, but rear bagger bracket) two mule drives, & a couple odds & ends. Runs good, no smoke or noises, 1200 hrs on the clock

5 pointsI guess I tend to differ from some here with respect to troubleshooting. I will start a simple list that others may want to add to. 1.) Buy a halfway decent meter 2.) Never depend on a factory schematic to do your thinking for you. 3.) Always consider the possibility that some idiot has caused problems by trying to re-invent the wheel 4.) Never try to group run problems necessarily by a specific model or engine 5.) Be willing to step back and listen

5 pointsHello there all you Red Square peeps. I've been lurking awhile and since I have found a WH that I like, I only signed up today. First my short intro. I'm a 20 year, disabled Navy Vet. 51 years old, 2 grown kids and married almost 30 years. I have a serious Maico dirt bike addiction and a serious love of vintage garden tractors. Currently my tractor collection consists of 2 1984 Case 116 XC's (very small but run 16HP B&S.) I'm looking to get into the WH game. I am positive, because of my addictive personality, the first Horse purchase will lead to more. So I wanted to ask the pros for your opinions on value of this `89 414-8 that I have found. Owner says that it has 900+ hours, is all original, runs and mows great, and doesn't smoke. He wants $1250 for it which scares me a bit...being on a meager fixed enlisted retirement income. Any and all opinions are very welcome. Thanks in advance.

4 pointsI picked this nice running little 603 up a few weeks ago from Fun Engineer. I added the back rest and some old wheel weight I had laying around. Had it out putting around and thought I would take a couple pics to post. I will probably blast the whole machine down piece by piece and give her a new coat some day. I have had just about every, sought after, model from one time to another, but this is my first 603. Glad I picked her up.

4 pointsGet yourself a Redsquare membership here to allow you to post ALL of those pictures of that beautiful tractor that we will require.... Garry already got you the owners manual and the IPL. When I get a new tractor, I grease all the grease points (see owners manual to get them all!), change all the fluids (check the OM for your engine, 10W-30 in the transmission, many here prefer mobile 1 full synthetic) change all the fuel lines and put in a new fuel filter, clean it up and run 'er. YOu will get more and more familiar the more you use it and always ask questions here, these people know what they are talking about! Also, check out Matt's Foot Pedal kit here. It will change the whole attitude of that tractor making it foot-controlled like the newer hydrostatics. All of the vendors listed in the vendor section have some pretty awesome offerings for our tractors!

3 pointsThere are no chipmunks in this part of the state,I have only seen them in the mountains.I am inclined to think mice did this.Mice are a pain but the damage that squirrels did to my truck's wiring harness was expensive. I have heard that peppermint oil is a good deterent.This was done at another location and although the cats here are the missus's pets they do keep the mice away.

3 pointsI am looking for an early 60's Wheel Horse, this one popped up about 90 mins from me. What do you think about it. Owner says it was powder coated, has new tires all around, good running 4 hp Kohler. Wants $400. What I see is missing, is the rubber grip on the attachment elevation handle, heat shields and belt cover. Also looks like the "dash" area of the hood was cut down at one point. I have asked for a picture of this area, and if the recoil starter is broke as the rope is hanging out in one picture. O[inions a[appreciated, am also looking at another one closer by me that I will have to decide on by this evening. The other one I am looking at is pictured in this post below.

3 pointsI think you already know what I have to say about that? Suppose you decide to flush it numerous times and you do have some bad bearings. Flushing is not going to fix those, and you could easily do more damage and make it more costly if you go that way and drive it. There is only one good reason to flush a transmission...it makes it a much cleaner job to open up.

3 pointsThe tires alone cost over $200 and good running Kohler K91 engines are getting harder and harder to find. It's a 1961 model 551 and appears to be a good project candidate. Just from what I can see, the hood has been cut at the hood stand, the clutch/brake bellcrank is broken, something is amiss with the brake band and linkage and the pull starter probably needs work. Yep, a nice project for sure!

3 pointsIf there's a drawback to the newer machines it would be electrical. Just take a look at the schematics for them compared to the older models. That can pose issues for those not electrically inclined. But the later models are reliable and the fact that attachments from 1973-2007 are basically the same is a big plus.

3 pointsFirst of all, if the engine is a K-321, it should be the same as a K241. Did you check the Kohler K-Series Service Manual? Here is the page right out of the manual.

2 pointsSo while I was out mowing for the first time this year on the 314-A, I looked down and saw that the transmission belt activation lever was missing the little end pieces that make up a handle. I hopped off the tractor and started to look around in the grass. All I was able to find was half of one of the pieces. Looks like with time it just fatigued and cracked. Seeing how simple it was I got an idea. I am a designer/engineer by trade and do lots of model making and prototyping where I work. I looked at the part I quickly modeled it up in solidworks (3D cad software) and ran over to my 3D printer and knocked it out. I made it so one of the pieces can hold a lock nut so it should never work its self loose again. Attached are some photos of the printing process and final parts on the tractor. Everything is back to normal and it works great! I'm trying to think of other common parts I could model up and print as the old plastic starts to fail on these great machines! Justin

2 pointsI wish to thank the Forum Folks for helping me find a replacement Throttle Cable for my Charger 12. The old one slipped and was a pain to use with the hydro drive. A previous poster put me in touch with Pat's Small Engine Plus and the p/n ROT9135 cable fit perfectly, no modifications needed.

2 points10) Always disconnect the battery when rewiring circuits or working on the tractor. At a minimum tape up any positive voltages so you don't accidentally short anything to the tractor. 11) When connecting the battery to the tractor connect the positive lead first and then the negative. When disconnecting the battery disconnect the negative first and then disconnect the positive.

2 pointsQuite aware he has them, but when I have the tools and the means I'll try it myself! Also, I'm assuming Glen just makes molds of existing parts. I wanted to add the lock nut to mine so it will never work itself loose from vibration. Thus I had to redesign and print it. This part was printed in PLA as its nice for quick prints. I'll likely print another in ABS when I get the chance. No support material. I always try and design my prints to have no supports. This is primarily due to the fact that its a single extruder machine which means any support material is the same as the regular print material which makes supports more difficult to remove. Also, no supports mean less print time! Printer has a heated bed. It is enclosed but I haven't added an ambient heater yet. I plan to do that soon as that will greatly help with warping caused by uneven cooling of the parts. Justin

2 pointsThe 551 was electric start also, so it looks to have a different engine in it as well. I think the other one looked more complete, but I do like the 2 piece cast iron transmission over the 3 piece, much easier to work on, (but many here have no problem with the 3 piece)

My grandfather was a dealer for many years so I grew up on these things. I have a 1054, 953, and just got a 520-H. I am looking forward to meeting many of you who I am sure have a lot of knowledge to share.

2 pointsYour right 953 nut. There was nothing wrong with the link for the ignition out of the box kit. It is an easy simple fix. I should have been probably a bit more respectful in understanding that some aren't ready for the DIY approach as of yet. Unfortunately it will take me some time to dial down my enthusiasm for trying to think out of the box and consider other or possibly all options available for this particular fix.

2 pointsWhen is comes to the value of machine that age I think that it comes down to the individual machine and not so much the fact that it's nearing 30 years old and the average price of those machines. Physically that one looks great from the picture. Assuming it's all original it was well cared for so you should be able to assume that it was well cared for mechanically as well. If it checks out as such I'd say it's still on the high side but not ridiculous. Sure, you could find one for less but you likely will have to invest more in getting it in top shape ending up with about the same investment. I would try for a better price but I don't see you getting hurt if he's not willing to budge on his price.

2 pointsThe C-160 and GT-14 are both very good choices. Depending on the size of your lawn and other factors like other things you want to do with it the GT-14 may be a bit bigger than needed, I have one with a front end loader and don't think I would want to mow with it because of all the tight turns and obstetrical I encounter. The C-160 is only slightly bigger than the 877 and will handle a 48" deck effortlessly. That being said, a test drive of each will tell you which one is for you. No mater what you buy,

2 pointsMy preference for a mower would be a C or 300 series tractor. 12 HP will easily turn a 42"deck. For the 48" I would prefer a 14 or 16HP.

2 pointsAnd I'm sure you noticed the price too -- $88!! and as I recall his shipping was very reasonable also. Another tidbit of info - the tire is exactly 33 inches tall which will be of interest to you T-Mo. On my 1054 it was pretty close to the fender, something like 3/4-1" but that was enough. The D has a good bit more room than that....
