8 pointsThis has been in the works since the herd grew from 1 to 3 then 5 plus all the implements/attachments and now the eMax, I ordered another 18'Wx21'L with 8' walls carport/building red with a beige roof and black trim, it will be going where I had the TSC 10'x10' ShelterLogic hiding 3 520s at one time, but the area wasn't big enough so I did a little excavating with the eMax before it arrives and installed and of course once I was pretty much done this evening it's starting to rain and supposed to through Saturday, still need to "level" it but at least with the FEL and rear blade it was 100% easier than a pick hoe shovel and wheel barrow, more pics to come once it's up, Jeff.

8 pointsWhen cutting grass "ALWAYS WIDE OPEN THROTTLE" as far as the motion control lever that's the beauty of the hydrostatic drive from a snails pace to the blindingly fast speed of 6MPH just don't mow as fast as you can and when ascending hills go only as fast as you are comfortable with also back slowly straight down the same tracks you went up this is how I've run my 520H for the last 19 years, Jeff.
-
8 pointsThose are some very astute questions! The engine on any hydro (automatic) transmission should be operated at near wide open throttle so the engine and transmission will receive good cooling. On steep inclines you should go up or down, if you go across them the oil level may not be enough for the splash lubrication on the engine to properly lubricate it. One more tip you didn't ask for, only use ethanol free gas! The ethanol will damage the rubber parts of the fuel system and create carb problems.

8 pointsWow! Just wanted to say thanks Jim for the lead. I just got home this morning in time to get to work, no time for a photo shoot till this weekend but its the best pic i got before i put her on the trailer. This one is a keeper for sure. The nice Gentleman who sold it to me said some guy called all interested said he would come look at it next weekend (heard this story before) guy wanted to see it go to a good home so he sold it to me for $50!

5 pointsJeff, Just persistence and luck.I saw the picture you see and that's all I had to go by.I didn't know it was a 96 anniversary model or was equipped with a Brinley hitch. The seller was turned off by people asking for model and other info.I told him I'd take it cash in hand no haggling, based on the picture alone.Don't know if I can get it to run but it seems to be in as good of shape as the picture suggests.JimAnderson

5 pointsGood deal then Mike glad someone in the family got it! Last thing I needed was another project! Awfully nice of your dad to pay location money fee. @Rp.wh is not gonna be happy as he wanted the mid mount but I told him where there was another one for sale!
-
5 pointsIt's been entirely way too long since I've had some time to work on this. I made some time this past weekend so here's an update. Shift linkage is in place. (What a nightmare that was) and a motor is on

4 pointsNo, Series II engines do not have an oil filter. There was an aftermarket filter mount with hoses that mounted to the left side of the tractor between the engine and battery. It was not on the engine block. Another way to test the hydro is to put it against a curb and spin the tire(s). This assumes that the drive belt is in very good shape as well.

4 pointsThe plot thickens! Details, details, deta.... There are so many rules and then so many exceptions while trying to gather all the info of the world of Wheel Horse! As soon as I think I know something or write it down someone points out that I need to get my erasure! Lord help the newcomer! Thanks goodness for this forum!

4 pointsIf the Spec number is greater than 24300 it is a Series 2. Not all series 2 had oil filters. Get it warmed up see if the hydro lift works smoothly then put it up against an immovable object and see if she will dig holes with the rear wheels.

4 pointsSteve has 40 tractors and Jim has 10. He has 4 times as many tractors as Jim. They go 5 yrs. Steve has 45 tractors and Jim has 15. Steve has 3 times as many tractors. They go another 15 yrs. Steve has 60 tractors and Jim has 30. Steve has 2 times as many tractors as Jim. Question: How many more years will it take for Jim to have as many tractors as Steve? It's ok. Take your time figuring it out!

3 pointsI had a few people ask about the mount I had made to mount a winch on the front of my tractor for lifting the plow so here are the pics. Any questions just ask.
-
3 pointsFinally have both blades set up and dialed in. The rain has stopped in East Central Missouri so I used the little guy to fill some ruts and pot holes with gravel. It worked pretty well and I had a lot of fun playing in the rocks.

3 pointsI can hear you guys a mile away........Fact is,,,,i have only gotten 1 in Old Va,,,,and that was from OldRedRyder,,,,, and the rest in PA,,Ohio,, and New York................I'm hoping everyone makes the BIG SHOW,,,,, Elcamino.....Hoping your Mrs, is doing ok,,,,,, 6 weeks,,,,,,,and the clock has been ticking,,,!!!!!! 3 pointsI usually jack from the center, then lower on jack stands. Tire work? My always "upgrade", lug nuts! Makes it easy to hang tires on studs when mounting. For me anyhow.
-
3 pointsThis tractor build is pretty dang cool... but I'm looking forward to the plow that's going on it! I'm a little partial to plows I guess... here's my fleet. Here's some inspiration from the Zugspitze in Germany too.

3 pointsRecently someone asked which hole the clutch pedal return spring goes into. Found this. Garry
-
3 pointsNot the authority on 417 Scuba Dude but I think it should have a Kohler 17 HP twin?? Other will be along to verify and you here. The transmission can be tested by chaining the tractor to an imovable object, owner allowing, and see if it digs in. Like Sylvan said get the manuals and study them so when you go to the look at you will know more about the tractor. If you have any suspicions take some (plenty) pics, again with owners permission, and bring them back here for the experts to eyeball. Pics of tractor & engine ID plates tells all. Biggest issue for me when going to look at a tractor of this type is how well was is taken care of and what might have been changed on it from it's orginal disposition. ( a nice way of asking if it's been hacked on). Question the seller on maintenance items done. Good luck with your potential buy.

3 pointsI sharpen once a year using angle grinder with a flap wheel. Just need to use caution as you can remove material fast. I just make light quick passes over the cutting edge. Prob not the preferred method but works for me
-
2 pointsSo uhm.. Might sound like a stupid question but i'd rather ask than damage my Horse. How do you use it when cutting steep inclines or thick grass? Or even regular grass for that matter. I've used it a couple times but unsure if operating the Throttle and Fwd lever speed properly. What am i supposed to set throttle at and look for on the engine pressure gauge?
-
2 pointsWe are just waiting for next Thursday morning and the surgeon. She is having bad days and worst days. You better be on the look out for @857 horse and @roadapples trying to snag a couple of your herd. You are safe with me , the El Camino probably could not make it to your neck of the woods and since it is only rated for 1/4 ton it would be a bugger to drive back to my place.
-
2 pointsAll I can say is There is no such thing as a stupid question @Mt Zion 520H only ones that don't get asked.
-
2 pointsThanks brothers. Got it.. Full on throttle and lever speed as needed. Lol. Up and down steeps slowly and not side to side. Only Ethanol-Free is going to be an issue i think. Clearfield PA.. Not sure any near me. How do i locate one if near?

2 pointsJust went out after the rain let up to see how unlevel my excavating was, surprisingly I guess playing machinist the last several years must have "trained" my eyeballs to get it close enough before grade staking and plumb line, Jeff.
-
2 pointsThat is going to nice. Just waiting on the picture of the shed and the horses resting in it.

2 pointsMy '86 417-8speed with a KT17 series II does not have an oil filter (has a port for one, but none installed); it may have been an option or a dealer installed item. Best way to tell is by the spec number on the engine ID plate as PFREDERI said. The manufacturer recommends that you start the engine WITHOUT the hydro trans engaged, especially necessary in cold weather. The Eaton hydraulics take 30 seconds to a minute or so to warm up before they will move the tractor or lift anything. Test it to see how long it takes. Check the color and smell of the hydraulic fluid My engine had a problem getting fuel to flow uphill from the gas tank under the seat, especially if the tractor has sat unused for awhile. I had to add an electric fuel pump near the gas tank to get good fuel pressure. Common problem, easily solved. Test the starting with the engine cold. The 417 is one of my favorite Horses. I love the sound and the smooth power curve of the Kohler two cylinders. Good luck, Jim

2 pointsI always jack on the housing for the rear axle and do one side at a time. If its strong enough to take the direct impact of a plow blade on the front, I don't see any issue with jacking it up there.

2 pointsBy 1986, all the Kohler KT17s being produced were Series II engines. So, if it's the original engine, it's a Series II engine. And the others are correct, it should be a 17 hp twin. If it's not, then it's not the original engine to begin with.
-
2 pointsAnyone with a walk-behind Bob-Cat/Bunton mower in the background of the video can be trusted in my opinion.
-
2 pointsThank you all for your thoughts. I will post again after I have some grass to mow.
-
2 points417A should have a Kohler KT17 17hp engine. I'm not sure when Kohler made the change, but the series 2 of these is a much better engine than the series 1 is. The series 2 is easily identified by the existence of an oil filter. The series 1 does not have an oil filter.
-
2 pointsIf I am not mistaken they should be the same as the sweet 16. I also run the the 17's Karl which I was told was a suitable substitute for the 14's. There is a difference in the size of the center electrode tho. The 17 is thinner. I'm certain my 20 hp came with the 14's and runs fine with either. Also certain the books calls out a 14 for any of the Onans. I don't have a pic of the 17 as they're in the 520 now. Got me curious as to what's in the 416 now will have to check. OEM P/N is 167-0272 Also noteworthy as some manuals call out a RS14YC while some call out an RH14YC...typo?? Lots of posts on the correct plug so will have to do some research. My bad on the previous post should be a RS14 not an RC...thats what I get for relying on memory. Two things tho fellas...please don't ask me why I have an empty spark plug box on the shelf and please don't tell my wife I am taking pics of plugs on her kitchen table!

2 pointsThe first thing you want to do is to be sure the cooling air flow is not being blocked, Pull the tins off and check for mouse/insect nests or built up grass/leaves that could obstruct air flow. Be sure all of the tins are in place too.
-
2 pointsBig THANKS! to daveoman1966 for helping me get some needed parts to get the new style deck adapted to my 1276 Tractor, and to replace a worn out drive belt idler pulley and linkage. Thanks again Dave!
