When I saw this tractor on a farm sale bill, I had to take a look. I have always liked the 417A, and this one is clean and has been well taken care of. I talked with the PO at the sale. He purchased it new on August 6th, 1986 and paid $3539.58 . He gave me all the manuals, tractor, mower, motor, parts breakdown, and other sales literature. It starts right up, no smoke, and runs like it looks. The tractor was this clean when I bought it, all I have done is load and bring home.

So it's about 7 PM Sunday and I get a text from Tom @Shynon about a real local tractor that appears to be a good deal. I quick call the seller within minutes and he says sorry a guy's on his way to get it. Already sold ...dang it story of my CL scores. So I have my main man @Rp.wh call the guy to see if the seller on the up & up and even offer a little more than asking. I know I know kind of dirty trick but the answer the seller gives can give you an idea about the seller's sincerity. So the seller says sorry I already promised it to another guy and I'm a man of my word. Good Man, By the way this was on CL for just 7 hrs and sold. So In my remorse and to console myself I commenced to playin pawn stars with Tom for a mid mount blade he has, pawn stars got nothing on Tom when it comes to dickering by the way... I would have end up payin more than he was askin! Make a long story short here turn's out Tom knows the buyer (I should have too since he's local) and was just lookin to flip the tractor. So Tom forwards my number to the buyer who calls me almost immediately with his flip price and I says deal. Flipper, who shall remain anonymous at this point, because of the GT-14 with a FEL he has a line on , says "What's your address I'll be there in a half hour." At this point I'm crappin twinkies and gotta pinch myself.....cannot believe how fast this all happened all within a half hour, 45 tops. So I says to Tom you know this negates the sale of that blade, you'll see why in the pics, & he says oh well! So this guy pulls into my drive about 9 pm with this trailer load of red and a cool little Ford I wouldn't have mined havin! Turns out the seller is a real nice guy, and his side kick was a retired Navy man so we could shot the bull for hours! Flpper has a WW II museum in Portage, WI and flips tractors of any brand, but is partial to Case's, to fund his other hobby. Made some friends, gave him a hot tip on a nice vintage Cub and he left around 1030. So here you go enjoy Seller askin 600, I paid 650 plus an extra Jackson for the guy's veteran efforts. I have no idea how this flipper makes anything doing this with the load he was hauling and the distance he covered hence the extra Jackson. This thing is in real fine shape...ALL orginal AND best yet unmolested! Purrs like a kitten and started right up even wet and cold! How often does a guy deliver!?!? Easiest score of mine to date that's for sure! Oh yes and came with a real nice gear drive deck that is in really nice shape! TIres are all OEM with the mold and no checking at all can you believe it! Thus grows my herd of '67s all I need now is a 1077, a 1277 and a ! There is just something about looking down that long hood but this is my first short frame square hood and now I get it about all the hoopla over these short frames!

I was out for the afternoon with my wife on Saturday, out for a little shopping and dinner. When on the drive home my phone rang, unfamiliar number probably a solicitor, so i didnt answer. A few minutes later my phone beeps for a message thats strange. So i listened to the measage i was right it was a solicitor, he wanted to sell me a . He said it was a 8hp with a 36in RD deck and it runs the only reason he parked it was because the deck gears were skipping. I told him to send me a pic or two and how much he was asking for it. Best part about this nice little commando 8 is he only wanted $100 for it! Im going to fix the deck and put her back to service mowing my yard.

As posted earlier in the mirror thread....I Got lucky and found this sitting on CL looking for a new home. My theory is that it was still available due to no model listed in the title or the text of the add. Only the year. Gentleman was first rate fella. His daughter/family inherited it from the father in law who did a restore on it and it sat in his small engine and equipment shop for years. Not sure if it was trade in or originally his but I have the floor tag that was on it when it first sold. And he said since I dealt with him fair and honest he had some other stuff he would just give me. I was was surprised at the windfall of stickers, manuals and advertising material. All original WH stuff. Tractor runs good. Starts right up and no smoke. Lots of scratches and dings in the paint. So eventually I'll re-do the restore. I have quickly grown attached to these little round hoods. It would have been better financially if I had never rode one. Water over the bridge now😐 The fella even even had the muffler shield!

Well as some of you know this is my last true build form the frame up. I hope you enjoy the video.

So between the storms today, it dried out enough to mow the one yard I cut for $$. About halfway thru the back yard, I see about a 8ish year old boy dragging dad thru the neighbors yard. Turns out he has Asperger's to and seen the tractor as I was driving around the block to the yard from my house. He had to come see it as soon as dad got home and could bring him over. Dad really liked the tractor and thanked me for helping bring more awareness to autism and making his son's day. Pretty cool and it is autism awareness month with yesterday being the official national awareness day. Can't wait to see what kind of attention the Horse get at the shows this year. I am still searching for one of the Glenn's horse head hood ornaments and to swap my larger WH slot hitch plow for one of the smaller ones better sized to a short frame. If anybody is able to help with those, I would greatly appreciate it! Cheers Mike the Aspie I added this decal to the hood since the first pic was taken. Mike

Have this tractor that needs a lot of love. Not sure if I should save it for a collector or not. There is a lot of potential in this tractor outside the French motor Italian Steering and Italian Transmission. Originally purchased the tractor for the Fel and Box blade but am having a bit of a hard time deciding what to do with it. Are there any collectors that would be willing to purchase it as is with the FEL for a decent price? I am trying to find the pictures of it now. I found a picture with the FEL working after I replaced a couple hoses and the O-Rings in the bucket cylinders.

Found this tractor here in town this morning...Has roughly 25-30 hrs on engine rebuild...Comes with the correct rear tires as well...Guy is asking 400 which I don't think is bad considering their rarity around here. Thoughts and opinions?
  12. 5 points
I think you are going to eat those words Jim. The new rebuild of the K 181 is unreal. I can't wait to try a plow on the back of the 857...the 876 also after rebuild. My 857 stinks?? May a camel riding Irocky, with a battery sawsall take 4" off one of your long frames. He lives over here and down the road 2 miles. OK, remember...just 4" off a long frame. We are looking for a Wheel Horse long frame. Excellent...now that is what I am talking about. May you never say anything bad about short frames again. What you can do with a sawsall!!

I know its a blackhood, I think it is a C-125. I love my blackhoods. Repowering a C-105 with a 16Hp kohler at the moment. It has a rubber mounted engine cradle. Rubber is likely shot, and they are expensive to replace, but I have @wheelhorseman1000 on the job for replacements, solid or otherwise. (Just a little nudge Lowell! ) Other than that I like the looks and they are 100% wheel horse, so theres not much else to say! Oh, it has a plastic seat pan, but it can be direct swapped with any later steel one (1985+) or earlier steel ones if you cut a hole for the trans dipstick.
  14. 5 points
That is a nice score Jim. Of course, you know why he delivered?? It was already loaded. SHORT FRAMES RULE!!! and 1967 was a Great Year.

Without knowing what your lawns are like it's hard to say, having said that, good sound decks are only going to get harder to find, if I didn't need the money/trade item I'd keep them both or at least one as a spare. Get a problem with your 60", you've got something to keep you going.

Did a little bit of yard clean up with the 312 Hydro and the "faux" Wheel Horse cart .

I don't care who ya are....that there's funny! Irocky's and crappin twinkies. What more could a feller ask for in a single thread?

I had a short day at work today so I was able to get some shop time. While I was hooking up the throttle I thought that some of you may be interested in the simple design of it. Just a bent piece of 1/4" round stock. A clip holds it against the body and provides tension to hold it where you position it. A small piece of wire then attaches the rod to the governor wheel. After hooking the throttle linkage up I decided that today was the day to pull the rope for the first time after my rebuild. I'm happy to report that after 3 pulls it fired right up. The little K91 purrs like a kitten. Now I'm getting really anxious to be able to go for a ride.

Well that's what you get for having that sticker on the back of yer truck! Sounds like it was a good weekend to score all the way around!

That will make a nice family shuttle tractor for you Tom when driving from Wheel Horse Estates North (home) to Wheel Horse Estates South ( @prondzys house) a few blocks away All kidding aside ....very nice!!

It was such a nice day I decided to spread some topsoil. I set the points, adjusted the carb, and put a new spark plug in my 876 and it runs like a top! I also found a new use for the blade, lining up curb blocks! I live next door to a foster care/adoption agency and I do maintenance, lawn care, computer work, and construction for them. It keeps me busy and gives me more seat time!

Final assembly on the transmission was more of a challenge that I thought it would be. The last time that I put it together I did not install the keys on the input shaft. After a couple trial & errors I found the right combination. There is not much room to put the keys in, even when you get the combination right. One last pic of the trans before I cover it up. It took the aid of two spring compressors to get the tension correct for the chain steering. I still have some parts to make, but it's starting to look like a tractor.

The war department said the b 80 was the last but I just couldn't let this one go. It has definitely put me in the dog house. The lady I got it from, got it from the original owner about a year ago. She said it was too big for her now and was looking for a smaller one. So I traded a little Craftsman rear engine rider for it. Who the hell would pass that up.

Wow. Its all there and then some and in great shape. 551 was my first wheel horse. Still have it.You are going to enjoy that one for sure. Put shield back you are going to need it. Great find, you will forget about the money soon.

That what the plans are rj, change fluids, pull the head, check things out in there, fix a few mechanicals, tighten things up abit, little spit & polish, say one Our Father three Hail Mary's & run her!

That's a nice one, Jim.... Friends like Tom are nice to have! Glad it worked out.

Yes fill'er up and head east that 7hp kohler has to get 7 MPG so you should make it out here!!!!

Check the actual battery voltage but mor'n likely a bad voltmeter. Battery should be around 13vdc with a good battery, around 14.6vdc with the engine running at near full throttle. Doesn't hurt to check the stator output around... 45vac with engine running WOT.

Who are you kidding; this won't be your last, it is only your latest! Great job.

Duke I'm sure you're going to do superb job on this project as well as the ones before, just thought you'd like know there is a NOS never sold 522xi setting in the basement at my old Dealer in WV, I would've done snagged had it not being he still wants what he paid for back in 2000 $5900 with only a 48" deck, just has demonstrator hours on it, Jeff.

Ah, A little bit of math based on the dimensions on the opposite side of the subframe will get you to that dimension.... (Overall Height 10.18" minus Sideplate 1.74" minus Crossbar Height 2.5") = 5.94" Subtract the 1/4" thickness of the bottom plate of mounting bracket to arrive at the dimension you were looking for: 5-11/16" or 5.6875'" Another Annotated Photo / Cheat Sheet For You: A=4 1/2 B=5 1/8 C=12 7/8 (measured to the cross bar) The gusset between the longitudinal frame and the cross bar is 1/4 inch thk. There is one on either side (front and back) of the crossbar (total of 4) D=8 3/16 E=2 1/2 The crossbar is 2 1/2" x 2/12" @ 1/4" wall The "risers" are 4"x2-1/2" @ 1/4" wall Also, the "spread" on my subframe is 33.75" That allows for about 1" to 1.5" of clearance to the footrests on the tractor. You can get an idea of that clearance, in the photo below.

Well guys I've had a look in my head for awhile how I wanted my daughters C81(Rosie) to look like and after I got the wife rear wheels off the 520 I decided to try and flop Axle upside down to lower the front... now idk if I'm gonna keep it like this but if it holds up I will.. this tractor is just meant too look cool and cruise. I do know some of the pros and cons of having this setup. For now it's just an experiment. My daughter loves it! P.S the front tires are not bowed in, the tractor always has been toed out so it just makes it look like that in a few pics

Since you don't have the tools now, put the $80 towards them and the steel pieces then you end up with the tools. ($80 cost for 4 @ $20 ea ) 2 steel rods = $10 http://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-4-in-x-48-in-Plain-Steel-Round-Rod-801587/204273972 Angle = $6 http://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-48-in-x-1-2-in-x-1-8-in-Plain-Steel-Angle-800877/204225743 Drill bit = $6 http://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-1-4-in-Cobalt-Red-Helix-Drill-Bit-48-89-2313/203115295 1/4-20 die for cutting threads = $7 http://www.homedepot.com/p/Gyros-1-4-20-Threading-Carbon-Steel-Hex-Rethreading-Dies-92-91420/204626038 Small adjustable wrench for Die and to tighten nuts -$8 http://www.homedepot.com/p/Stanley-MaxSteel-6-in-Adjustable-Wrench-90-947/203710898 Vice = $30 http://www.homedepot.com/p/BESSEY-4-1-2-in-Light-Duty-Bench-Vise-with-Swivel-Base-BV-HW45/205023078 Drill =$20 http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ryobi-Reconditioned-5-5-Amp-3-8-in-Corded-Variable-Speed-Drill-ZRD43K/206382736 Hammer = $10 http://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-20-oz-Ripping-Hammer-N-S20SHD-HN/205157322 Hacksaw = $5 http://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-10-in-Standard-Hacksaw-12150/204748830 Tape measure = $8 http://www.homedepot.com/p/Stanley-12-ft-Tape-Measure-33-312L/100123236 Lag bolts for mounting vice, 1/4-20 washers and nuts = $3 Black paint = $1 You can skip the angle pieces, just buy more rod and bend it. It holds the battery because it goes across the top of the battery vs holding it on the corner. Use the money for the drill, angle steel and bit to buy a propane torch which will make bending the rod into a circle much easier. You could also buy threaded rod instead of steel rod and a die. Propane torch = $17 http://www.homedepot.com/p/Bernzomatic-UL100-Basic-Propane-Torch-Kit-UL100KC/203665003 1 hour to shop for tools and parts, 2 hours for mounting vise and building 4 battery braces. Total = $106 so it just cost you an extra $26 and a few hours for those tools plus 4 battery hold downs. Skip the angle, drill and bit and save another $15 plus less time to build. Building your own stuff = priceless Just spent 1/2 hour putting this reply together. LOL I have more time into this project than you do! P.S. Probably best if holes are drilled directly into corner of angle

I agree with Mike on this. I started using a 42" Rear Discharge last spring and love it. The grass trimmings don't wind up in the mulched flower beds and in the fall I use it to chop leaves up and pull a 42" lawn sweeper; one pass operation.
  42. 3 points
Depends on your yard. I have lots of trimming, trees ect. and love my 42 RD recycler deck.

Thought about that too! May look into thicker clips if I feel I'm gonna have a problem. Also starter needs replaced so it will be awhile before she actually get ran around so I have time to figure this out and modify it... Also being small engine plus not having pto pulley on engine it is kinda light in the front so that helps alil!

Change the gender and this seems appropriate here! Passenger: "Wow, what a guy!" Cabbie: 'He always knew the quickest way to go in traffic and avoid traffic jams. Not like me, I always seem to get stuck in them. But Frank, he never made a mistake, and he really knew how to treat a woman and make her feel good. He would never answer her back even if she was in the wrong; and his clothing was always immaculate, shoes highly polished too. He was the perfect man! He never made a mistake. No one could ever measure up to Frank Feldman." Passenger: "How did you meet him?" Cabbie: "I never actually met Frank. He died and I married his wife."
