so this weekend a good friend and my next door neighbor of 30 years crashed his truck into a bridge and died instantly.as some may have read earlier we got hit hard by the ice storm last week, well then it warmed up and rained, making the roads and driveways a nightmare, probally the worst ive ever seen,my friend was coming home from work at 5 pm,turned onto a gravel road near us,sped up,hit someice on the road and swerved out of control and died hitting a concrete bridge.still in shock,he was a mechanic for large equipment and had a liking for the horses,he couldn't believe how many I have, and was allways amazed at what they could do,we deweeded his pond years ago with one and a drag harrow, and when id plow his drive he just shake his head and say I cant believe what those little tractors could do,he will be missed greatly.his wife will have to move, ill never get neighbors like them again,my wife and his wife are close so its real tough on my wife, you never know when its our time,so enjoy every day

Just when you think you have seen everything, this pops up. Once it has been seen it can't be unseen!

Horses did pull fire equipment back in the colonial days. Guess Stallions still do!

Which gears is it? Is it the little pinion gear and fan gear or it's it the bevel gear and upper steering shaft gear? If not worn beyond shimming, then that is the usual preference. Also make sure your gears are clean from extreme combination of old grease and grime build up. I have seen those gears get so much crud impacted on the teeth that they walk right out of mating with each other. Putting grease on low rpm external gears like that, in dirty conditions is a recipe to attract dirt and crud that act as a multiplier in the wear factor. There is a grease zerk down there. That's to grease that shaft that runs through the cast steering block, that should be greased. I know you didn't ask about greasing. Sorry for the lecture. Let us know which gears are slipping and how bad. Pictures would also help. I have some experience with this and I know there are other on here with even more than me. We will get you squared away.

Jim it's a Magnum 14 on it. And I'm sure it probably is a 42" deck. Here's a picture of it

you can't remember where they are. Old age!!! There was a question in the implement section asking for some pictures of a tiller mounted. I know mine is.... but where is it. I know it isn't in the shop, but she is usually down in the barn so i went down to snap a couple of pictures . Turns out she wasn't there she is up in the storage shed (I hope) but that is to far to hike in the wet snow today...besides it is packed tight and getting a picture would be hard.

I had to get an MRI this morning about 45 minutes south of me. On the way back my dad wanted to stop by the tractor salvage yard we occasionally go to so he could get a small part for his lawnmower. While I was walking into the shop I noticed a nice set of 6-12 ags on wheels. When the owner said 50 bucks , I asked if he took credit card. Hard to find these used and in good condition. They will be for my Suburban project.

You are probably the only person on the site that can say that! We are all so eager to spend your money, but if you did't want to you probably wouldn't have posted it. The 1054 isn't a basket case, they just did some of the disassembly work for you. Looks like the fenders are straight and solid and having a 12 horse isn't a big deal; I like it.
  18. 3 points
Yeh, I saw that too. Someone did a lot of work to create it, probably for their kid. If I had a kid young enough, I'd consider buying it for them. Listing says it runs ok, and the price isn't too high. Maybe we will see someone's youngster riding it around at the big show. Jim

Got all of the seals replaced with the help of the guru himself @stevasaurus Apparently I have an oddball transmission, but the regular seals fit just fine. Sure appreciated your help Steve! It appears the fuel issue was the primer bulb itself. I guess it wasn't getting a good seal. The filter was never staying full with it inline. Removed it and smooth sailing. I bet I don't put a primer bulb in again. Maybe I just got a bad one, I dunno. But the Sleeper is all fixed up. Now onto the C-121, looks like all four seals may be shot on it......as well as the fuel line..... Thanks for everyone's input!!!

I am a bit tractor heavy and mower light. i found a mower deck that had the double d center pulley intact and that pulley would complete the 42 SD that I already have at less money than I have seen the pulley sell by itself. the seller had another 48 inch deck that would make a dandy for spare parts or a complete resto. I keep saying "no more tractors", but then there is the spare parts issue The tractor is a shot in the dark, but it has some decent sheet metal and if the Sunstrand works, it would be a cute tractor with a 6,5 Predator. .I plan to mount a pulley on a drill motor and turn the tranny pulley to see if the transmission will work I have never seen a 42SD like this one in that the drive line on the mower deck has many pulleys that twist and turn the belt. The mower is driven with a separate jackshaft at the front. I am sure that you experts will know what it is, but I am clueless as I just got it off the truck. The blade mounts all seem oK and have the pipe extension grease fittings. I used BG inForce penetrating oil on on the 50 year old fasteners to get to some things and WOW. It went in 6 threads deep within minutes. A forum member recommended it and i think the kroil is going to stay on the shelf.. Anyway, i got it all for 125.00. Cross your fingers on the transmission.

"When we had the opportunity to test one of our tractors in the hostile terrain of Mexico's Baja Peninsula, we just couldn't resist. Why the grass-baren desert of the Baja? Because one of the most common causes of engine ,transmission, and axle failure in any tractor is the dirt, wear, and overheating due to long-term operation. For 4 days, we drove a 520-H tractor through 500 miles of constant dust and unforgiving terrain of the Baja. To say the least, the 520-H finished with flying colors---no breakdowns or leaks. And that is why you can say a Toro Wheel Horse tractor is Baja tough!" From post #31 here...

Sold one of of my green lawn tractors and had enough left over after buying a model train I wanted, that I went out and bought this nice Commando 8, fully loaded with lights, cig lighter, nice rear discharge mower deck(not shown), original WH marked tires and a working slot hitch. He has the moldboard plow for it and he set it aside and I will pick it up once I have some more funds in my wallet. Its been awhile since I had a WH in the stable. I want to do some special autism touches to it. The paint and decals are super nice, except for the top of the hood and fender pan. I hate to loose the original decals and nice dealer decals in a full repaint. Thinking of having a decal made to cover the top of the hood in the autism rainbow jigsaw colors with "Autism Acceptance" in either yellow or white lettering in the middle of the top of the hood. Could you cut the snap ring groove twice as wide, so that the damaged area is cut away, and use two snap rings?

Hmm... And according to the ad, he can get it to my house for $8.70 via USPS Priority Mail. Unlikely I guess.

This wiring diagram is from the 1991 416-H. With the key turned on, check with your meter at the (A) accessory terminal of your ignition switch for 12V. If you have it there, move on the the light switch. If you don't have it there, the 15 amp fuse is probably blown or the fuse holder/connections are bad. However, if you don't have power at (A), and you have power at (B), your ignition switch is probably bad.

Thanks for the pics Richard & Wildhorse...., yes that is kinda cool & bet it would draw some eyeballs at a show! Had to be some serious fabbing there. Any clues as to what the front bumper was from? Tractor might be a 70???
  34. 2 points
I have done this on a smaller scale using an empty 15" rim with a chain double wrapped around a small stump, run it over the rim and hook it to the , plucks them right up out of the ground!

Aldon I was thinking more on the year then the money. And yes I would post it if I didn't get it. This 702 ? Was never Advertised he mentioned he had another tractor in his basement and if I wanted it he would give me a package deal. I'll probably go and get it also. I'm a sucker for wheel horse's.

If you, or a friend or relative aren't intimidated by mechanical things then this is going to be easier than you think. We have lots of good knowledgeable members who can walk you through repairs that may be needed. As Glen said, post some pictures and a little more information about the thins that do and don't work well and we will go from there.

After going back and forth between searching for a front end loader and building my own, I've decided to give building my own a shot. If it goes badly, I may decide to buy one, LOL. But I think if I don't at least attempt to build mine, I will always wonder if I can. Since I love building things, I'm going to at least attempt it. Credit goes to those who went before me, and those who provided help to me and others in their build, I have learned a lot watching those projects. First was this topic: Then Andy built a mount for a Kwik-Way for his 522xi in this thread: There were other topics, but these are the two that stick in my mind Andy, and those who helped him have by extension, been an immense help to me. Without his excellent thread and those who helped him with measurements, etc., I probably would not have attempted this. Andy's dimensioned subframe drawing has been a huge help already. So, rather than hijack his topic, I will start my own here. To catch up on what I have done so far, mostly planning and questions, see the Picked up a Kwik-Way Loader for my 522xi topic above. Yesterday and today were the first real building activity. I cut and drilled the brackets to make the mid frame attachment to the tractor. These will be welded to the two 2"x2"x1/4" frame members that attach to the rear axle.

    (1) Power: Your older 12hp would be about equal to a newer 20-22hp tractor today; small engines used to rated on horsepower and today are more on just speed (as I understand it). But, engines wear down in time, so a 50 year old unrestored 12hp engine may only have 8–10hp of output today. (2) Traction: That aerator is very heavy and with the prongs going down 3-4" into the ground, that creates a lot of drag, your Wheel Horse does have a transmission that is very strong can can pull it, but you need all your horse power going to it and excellent traction to keep your rear wheels down and "bitting in" without spinning (good 'lug' tires and lots of weight at the rear wheels, plus some weight on the front for steering). (3) On flat fairly dry ground, your tractor may be able to pull it, but even the turns will be a chore for it. (4) You can purchase a new "pull plug aerator" from the box stores for about $200, no motor, maybe 50# empty, with each turn the new soil goes up the tube pushing out the former soil. With 2-3 cement blocks on it for extra weight and in normal slightly moist soil, it will do a very good job. The plungers will plug up, (for me, maybe just once every 8-10 minutes that I have to stop and unplug a stone from one the plunger tubes, my soil is mostly clay, not stones), but I have this aerator whenever I want it. On our 4-acre pasture I always pull a "spike aerator" ($100) when I mow, to cut little slits in the soil, maybe 2" deep and about 4-5" apart. Must drive slow in 1st gear for the de-plugger, but for spikes I run in 2nd while mowing.

Sorry craftsmanmowerfreak but that's all I could get . He had all the parts under a bench in his basement. Actually it is a 1 piece tank the red was not cleaned off before he painted the primer on it

It is possible that he is not pulling hard enough on the axle to pull it out...but if one axle is out a little, the other one can move in a little farther and give the impression that both are messed up. The 2 axles butt into each other in the differential and the snap ring keeps the axles from pulling out...that is your 1/8" of play. Pull one axle out 3/4" and the other one has nothing to butt into anymore and will have a little more slop. Either way, you have to open the trans to fix it. Drain the trans, remove the shifter, take the trans off the horse and place the input shaft side "down"...brake shaft side "up". Open the case and lift off the deeper side...you can now pull out the differential. There is no need to take out any gears, unless you want to clean out the trans. Notice that you are looking at the nuts on the bolts that hold the differential together...you want to be looking at the nuts again when you put the differential back into the trans case. Check for lose hubs first...like was said above.

The best thing is you can hang one roll one way and the other the opposite way, thus never having to wonder which is the right way.

Made the bucket mounting flanges today. Found out one of the boom arms has a small twist (1/8") so the flanges are not perfectly straight. Tacked the flanges on and will try it as is. If it is too much, the only way I see to fix it is to cut the weld apart and re-weld the boom arm, which I do not want to do. I don't think it will make enough of a difference to matter. Made the angle brace brackets and mounted them to the tractor. Made the last pin that needed drilling for a grease zerk, and still have all my fingers. The V block definitely helped, I did one just in a vice and it scared the carp outta me, thought for sure something was going to go flying. I'll be watching CL for a good drill press, the one from HF is junk. Also test fitted the cylinders again.
