This is my Dads 84 Workhorse which I am using this winter. He bought it at an auction for $200 some years back. It has a mower deck that came with it and the plow we added later. Still a sound old tractor but far from needing being restored. I will be putting my weights on it but need longer carriage bolts. Im not a fan of the opposed Briggs but it runs for now. My sister used it for cutting grass but did not want to run chains on her newly paved drive so Ill keep it working.

Well, I'm getting closer to having this back together. I've got the rear tires on and now have the correct battery hold down installed and a set of LED tail lights. I've still got to paint a cover plate for the dash tower, put the rest of the decals on and get a steering wheel insert from Glen. I found out the alternator wasn't charging and a new rectifier regulator fixed that. Next week I need to take it outside and warm the engine up good so I can torque the head bolts again and I'll need to fine tune the foot pedal linkage....... I painted the rims Argent Silver from Eastwood's. Do you guys spray a clear coat over that and if you do what do you use?

All good advice above, But when I am trying to start a non running tractor, my first step is to get it turning over properly, then verify I have a good spark at the spark plug, then try to start it by squirting fuel directly into the carb, and lastly remove the fuel line at the carburetor and check for a good spurting fuel supply to the carb. If the engine isn't turning over properly or if there is no spark at the plug, no amount of fuel delivery maintenance will start the engine.

You gonna restore them or leave the patina? That's a couple of nice machines there.

She said NO SPARK.... Make sure the points are clean and adjusted correctly. @953 nut posted the manual for your tractor to help with the cleaning/adjusting. These tractors are fairly simple to fix and get running, but we (me and others) do not always understand what we are trying to troubleshoot from the easy chair. Pull up the manual(s) and read through them, then read them again while looking at your tractor, THEN read them again while working through the process. Do not get discouraged, as we will work this out, you will understand what we are trying to say, and we will understand your problem. Red Square members have fixed many, many tractors over the years from hundreds of miles away. @tractor girl 58Oh, and to

Buffing??? They look 10 times as purdy than any one of mine which are mostly younger.

The end of your steering shaft goes into a block bolted to the frame where it meets the fan gear. If the block is cracked or one of the bolts has come out the block will move when turning one way but may not when turning the other way.

I decided to look around on Twitter for Wheel Horse and saw this disturbing to me post. Is it me or does this just not seem right.

Glenn, you said you used WD-40 as your "slickem- juice" I'm willing to bet that was your problem on the evening round, also let me ask you this "is your garage heated"? or at least warmer than outside? The WD-40 is a a water dispersment to some extent but straight up silicone spray is 100 times better for snow equipment which probably is the main ingredient in Snow-Jet, and if your rig was at 55° or more then going out in the wet snow just exasperated your snow sticking/clogging (warm tongue to frozen metal pipe "A Christmas Story") from your after picture of it stuck to the auger/ drum, yes the auger spins at half or less (1000 rpm?) speed of the impeller (3600 rpm) and I'm a firm believer in the impeller rubber paddle upgrade as seen in my above pic keeps that drum wiped clean of slush and powder, but let's see if as your set up it was a "warm" blower housing in cold wet snow didn't really cause your abnormality this time, my poor old s set in an unheated out building then go to work work at the same temperature, Jeff.

Thank you Richard and all you old dogs for the kind wishes. And for you young pups on board, no need to call me Mr. Kennell as I am actually a 23 year old that happens to live in a 73 year old body. It has been a great week. Finally got a plowable snow and cleared all the neighbors driveways last week. Picked up my oldest son Mark, wife Julie, and grandsons Clayton and Owen in York yesterday and drove to my Nieces home in Charlestown, WV for our annual Christmas party. Most of my family still lives in the mountains in western Pa, Md, and WV, so we always schedule it on the Sat. after NY day which usually falls near my Birthday. My other two grandsons had their 2017 Tech Fire robot kick off meeting on Sat., so they missed the party. Just got back from breakfast....Mrs.K and her mother took me out to Boardwalks Restaurant where I enjoyed a few of the free Mamosas (sp) and a great meal. BTW, Nan's mother will celebrate her 93 birthday on Wed. Now to settle in to watch my beloved Steelers.....I hope those Miami Dolphins don't freeze up out there in Pittsburg at 11F. I think I just got a wiff from the kitchen...I believe Mrs K has a blackberry pie in the oven. She really takes care of this 23 year old. Looking forward to busy year filled with crabbing, fishing, hunting gardening, baseball, football, basketball, music concerts, robot tournaments, and getting my oldest grandson, Reed, settled into his new adventure as a college student. I may have time for a few Tractor shows also.....man, I am glad I am only 23. Thank You, Best Wishes for the New Year, and May God Bless you all from the Kennell Family.

The fact that it has been for sale for three months should tell the would-be seller he needs to rethink his price. When he didn't grab your hand and shake it at $ 475 tells me he isn't a seller!

OK...I.m not really an expert here on limited slip differentials (disclaimer) but if you look, the spider gears do interlock...like I said...the spring is pushing against the pinions so as to lock the trans if it is going in a straight line or stuck. I believe that the Bold type is what is important as to how this works. The fact that the pinions are not on posts (as in 4 and 8 pinion differentials) means that they "float" in their receptacles with a number of things keeping them in place. One of the things that lets me know you have a 10 pinion limited slip differential...there is a 1" extension on the check plug just behind the axle. That gives you an extra 1" or so of oil in the transmission. This would assure getting more oil in to where that spring is. The burn marks that you guys are talking about on that spring could be from just a lack of enough oil in the trans over the years. I don't know if the limited slip transmissions came with that extension from the factory originally...or maybe it was a fix because of what you see in that spring. There is nothing wrong with the limited slip concept for Wheel Horses...they were never meant to be pullers....but they will handle anything they were meant to do. One other thing...just because you have some burn marks on that spring, does not mean it is a bad spring. Sure, if I had access to a new spring, I would replace it...but it would still function as the spacer it needs to be, and it could still be OK. We don't know. Hope this helps and makes scence, cents, since, etc.

Its super. without further adieu,,enjoy a few pics. will have to go out later, supposed to snow till 8pm. Glenn

Picked this up late this summer. Finally got time to post some picks and start on bringing her back to life. I started tearing it down today and couldn't resist trying to clean all the rust off the ID plate. I couldn't read anything on it in the beginning. Truthfully couldn't tell if it had anything stamped in it. But after a slow process of cleaning. I got it looking good. Serial number is faint but reads as 42388.

Hello all, I have plenty of friends here on the 'square and I think most if not all CT members know me or of me. I decided to post this because if you dont laugh you'll cry. This is one of those stupid things you do and MOST times get away with... not this time, but nobody got hurt. The scene... its snowing like heck, lots of slick stuff and ice... add in a 30 hp hydrostatic mid size JD tractor with FEL. My sick friend/pseudo boss calls the shop and asks me to move a few boats around so the yard can be plowed. No prob, I 'git er done.... Then I step on the hydro pedal and the tractors rear end kicks out, hmmmmmm flash back to manchester CT Caldors parking lot circa 1989 with Vin and Matt and the '68 Nova. DOUGHNUTS!!!! So here I am doing doughnuts on tractor and having a ball... then I loose it and tractor goes into bad skid. I search frantically over next 2 or 3 seconds for brake pedal... no dice, I look up, think to myself awwwwwww poop and crash. FEL opens driver door on my Silverado like a can opener. Yep... 45 yrs old and pulled a real stupid move. Nobody hurt... anybody else got similar stories? Tony

I think most of the terms are what someone thinks they mean.I will give my thoughts but others may disagree.A hydro transmission has no clutch pedal.Forward and back are controlled by a lever or pedal but not a clutch and a brake pedal.A hydrostat uses a lever or a pedal to give variable speeds forward and reverse regardless of engine speed. This is not in my mind a true automatic transmission like used in an automotive application because of its limited speed range.Three point hitches almost always have some sort of hydraulic assist although some garden tractors had a manual lift that would use standard 3pt attachments. Bolts on my 314h tranny mount were all found loose awhile back. Now I don't know if it's from back and forth w the 2 stage. And the additional stress of a 2" hitch supporting a ballast box w 300lbs. Or an ******* neighbor w a wrench and plenty of time. The trans mount plate is prone to cracking. Primarily from abuse. 520s came through w a reinforcing 1/4" plate. Many of us have added that to our trusty lil red riders.

They are Turf Masters, Dave. 7.50's on the front, I put these tires on my C160 a while back and like them. Thanks, Craig.... The seat is a K&M 123 Unipro, I got it from Turfseats.com. I saw one on Bob Maynard's 416 and liked the way it looks on this series tractor, plus it has the correct bolt pattern to mount it.

I am the original owner of a GT 1800 automatic with an 18hp Briggs. Although it has no hour meter on it I would be willing to bet it has well over 2000 hrs on it and it is still going strong. Yes I love those one lung Kohlers (I have 8 of them that run just fine)but I will never say a bad thing about my Briggs!!

The booster seat is an interesting item. I doubt that the spring is available any more, but could be. Some people just shouldn't be allowed to use tools!

Sought after, not so much, scarce, definitely. Down south these are sought after only by a few, at last count maybe 4 or 5 of us LOL. The problem down here is the few folks who own these things know what great little tractors they are and want good money for them. A couple of months ago I bought a c-81 from the original owner in Atlanta, he wanted $600 for it, he said it had been sitting for a couple of years in his shed. When I got there the battery was dead, no way to start it, he said the only problem was the PTO clutch bearing split. Next to it was a tub cart, he said he bought it new with the tractor. The tractor and cart looked to be in good shape, I told him $600 was more than I would pay for it since I could not hear it run. We settled at $450 with the cart, got it home put a battery in it and some fresh gas, fired right up, the PTO clutch problem that's a different story. Did I need it, no, do I regret it, if that's the case then I have a 1000sf shop full of regrets. I guess my point to this post is, is it worth $450, and an 8hr round trip and $100 in gas, well not to my wife, but for me hell yes. sought after

IMHO the C-111 is a good tractor. Maybe the Briggs ain't the best, but they have an 8 pinion rear end, so if repowered, good to go there. Simple and tough the C-111. I ran one with a 36 inch RD deck and it was a nimble tractor, great cut.

Glenn, have you checked the oil level in the auger to impeller gearbox? I know it seems far fetched but it's the same gearbox on the tillers and notorious for leaking dry...the factory seals just aren't any good in my experience and I'm not familiar with the xi set up but on the classic it also has a 90° gearbox on the side belt drive that also takes oil, also check drive chain tension if has no hours I'm sure the morning run "broke in" the chain and it has stretched some,Jeff.

Must be a regional / local value thing, maybe caused by supply / demand... At the end of the day, if you want it and it meets your needs - go for it. If it is a regional thing then your resale value will also reflect that in the future as well. I have ALOT more invested in my C 105 than anything posted recently on CL, but I do not plan on selling it, it serves me well, and I like it way better than the junk they sell now - so it is "worth" it to me... At the end of the day value is an elusive thing. 99.9% of people would not pay a dime for a WH because they don't need or want one. You are getting feedback from folks who know WH tractors (way better than me) and spend a lot of time learning more about them every day. That's great, but it is also a pretty skewed view of the universe, based on their unique knowledge of all things WH... Final thought - Last time I was in Maine I spent about the same $$$ that we are talking about between asking and offered price ($125) on a fancy lobster dinner for my family of 4...While it was a great meal and the memory is priceless, that meal is long gone, while your WH will be around for decades...

I don't know if its just me though but if you look at some on C/L now in my area in maine and mass and NH ones that are non runners are starting at this price and look ready for the scrap heap or stuff has been severely modded to where you wonder if it even works? but this particular unit is the cheapest best looking one yet that's whats gets me the average where i'm at that's a decent runner with any attachment is $700 to 750 unless its a 520 then 1500 and up a lot of times D when I come across them a lot of times $1500 and up now I know values for say like PA really good deals and NJ too a lot of times ..............ok i'll stop rambling on here but we'll see what happens I guess thanks for all the suggestions and coments

I'd told him $300 not knowing the condition of motor or trans . I don't not to pay more than $250 for no runners , at least you can get your money back out of it that way .

Notice how fixated these minions are trying to solve a problem...there are no democrats...there are no republicans. There are only overhauls...or lack there of. And I am left wondering if they really care if they solve the problem at all. Or just maybe...there is no problem. Maybe a Tweet is needed here. or....this is the Michigan wolverines locker room after the Orange bowl!!!

That would be what you could call "a horse of another color". The owner obviously knows the best tractor but perhaps just liked a different decal? At least he picked a good brand and decent looking decal. Some of the other brand decals would have been an insult. I won't mention any names. I would give him a pass on that one, but just this one time only as long as he never does anything like that again to a horse. At least he did not use that other brand decal that would have tried to turn that horse into a donkey.

Tip. use a piece of cloth between the magnet and paint. keeps the scratches down. I mounted a winch switch on a magnet and it still sticks pretty well. I like the light idea. Just might copy.
