First off thanks to @Bttatro for turning me on to this CL score ( I tried to PM you the news Friday but my phone sucks at the cabin)! So anyway I set up the go look at & turns out the guy is only 2 miles off my beatin path up to the cabin. Made a wrong turn because Karen (my GPS) was useless as T#ts on a bull up there & ended up having to back the rig out of the woods 1/4 mile in the dark... no fun there! Finally found the place & there she was. Turns out the seller had just bought this place (estate sale) opened up some shed doors and found out he bought a tractor with the property. He had no clue as to what a Wheel Horse even was. Said he put a new plug in it charged the battery & some gas and it started right up. So closed the deal and driving it out to the trailer it would only come off idle by a couple of hundred RPM's. So I asked the guy about the throttle issue and he had no clue. Said he even cut grass with it like that! I explained to him ( he was not very mechanically inclined) that this motor will get up and go when adjusted right. So I manually set the throttle and get it on the gov. to show him where it should be running RPM wise and he gave me a look like I was gonna blow it up. I says no this is where it should run at. He was amazed at the power & sound of that 12! Ok enough Yakin and on to the GOOD STUFF.... She is a dirty girl but a round with the pressure washer and some elbow grease should clean up nice. Aside from the throttle issue runs good & may need a carb cleaning. Has the wrong battery in it and some other minor stuff but is complete. If somebody can tell me if that switch on the dash is factory. It must of had some kind of lighting on it at one time. Some bug eyes up on the corners of the hood?? I sure do like looking down that long hood with seat time!

Well the little green men dropped me back off after they got through probing me ! The owner was a great guy holding it for me (even with my low bid) , said he had out of state horse thieves calling on it . I told him I just missed one out on one (520-8) but one of those Hoosiers beat me to it . The guy wouldn't hold it so after he pulled the ad I called him and told him what he had and it was really worth ! This guy knew what he had and knew he could sell it for more , but he couldn't let it sit outside anymore . I have to say , even though probably every rubber bit needs replacing , I'm happy ! This thing started right up with no hesitation , no smoke or odd noises . Heck it even mowed with no problems . There's a couple wiring issues , one being the temp light stays on (said it didn't do until he power washed it) , key switch , and neutral safety needs adjusting . It's super straight , all lights are intact , and the chrome hub caps have very little rust and a couple of dings . He had all the pully covers and a replacement deck wheel . Heck I think with some buffing the red paint and some Meguiar's ultimate black plastic restorer she'd shine right up . I'm glad I picked this one up . I'll try to get the serial # today so I can verify the year , It looks like it has the fan gears for steering ? She still on the trailer but I'll try to get some more pics maybe even a video if the son is home today . Hey almost forgot she only reading 533.9 hrs. and I'd believe it . So what do think , did I do the right thing ?

Some of this likely will not turn out quite as planned, but it's interesting, just the same. In 1998, Kodak had 170,000 employees and sold 85% of all photo paper worldwide. Within just a few years, their business model disappeared and they went bankrupt. What happened to Kodak will happen in a lot of industries in the next 10 years - and most people won't see it coming. Did you think in 1998 that 3 years later you would never take pictures on film again? Yet digital cameras were invented in 1975. The first ones only had 10,000 pixels, but followed Moore's law. So as with all exponential technologies, it was a disappointment for a long time, before it became way superior and got mainstream in only a few short years. It will now happen with Artificial Intelligence, health, autonomous and electric cars, education, 3D printing, agriculture and jobs. Welcome to the 4th Industrial Revolution. Welcome to the Exponential Age. Software will disrupt most traditional industries in the next 5-10 years. Uber is just a software tool, they don't own any cars, and are now the biggest taxi company in the world. Airbnb is now the biggest hotel company in the world, although they don't own any properties. Artificial Intelligence: Computers become exponentially better in understanding the world. This year, a computer beat the best Go player in the world, 10 years earlier than expected. In the US, young lawyers already don't get jobs. Because of IBM Watson, you can get legal advice (so far for more or less basic stuff) within seconds, with 90% accuracy compared with 70% accuracy when done by humans. So if you study law, stop immediately. There will be 90% less lawyers in the future, only specialists will remain. Watson already helps nurses diagnosing cancer, 4 times more accurate than human nurses. Facebook now has a pattern recognition software that can recognize faces better than humans. In 2030, computers will become more intelligent than humans. Autonomous cars: In 2018 the first self driving cars will appear for the public. Around 2020, the complete industry will start to be disrupted. You don't want to own a car anymore. You will call a car with your phone, it will show up at your location and drive you to your destination. You will not need to park it, you only pay for the driven distance and can be productive while driving. Our kids will never get a driver's license and may never own a car. It will change the cities, because we will need 90-95% less cars for that. We can transform former parking spaces into parks. 1.2 million people die each year in car accidents worldwide. We now have one accident every 60,000 mi (100,000 km), with autonomous driving that will drop to one accident in 6 million mi (10 million km). That will save a million lives each year. Most car companies will probably become bankrupt. Traditional car companies try the evolutionary approach and just build a better car, while tech companies (Tesla, Apple, Google) will do the revolutionary approach and build an efficient car/computer on wheels. Many engineers from Volkswagen and Audi; are completely terrified of Tesla. Insurance companies will have massive trouble because without accidents, the auto insurance will become 90% cheaper. Their entire car insurance business model will disappear. Real estate will change. Because if you can work while you commute, people will move further away to live in a more beautiful neighborhood and in a smaller-efficient. Electric cars will become mainstream by 2025. Cities will be less noisy because the new cars will run on electricity. Electricity will become incredibly cheap and clean: Solar production has been on an exponential curve for 30 years, but you can now see the burgeoning impact. Last year, more solar energy was installed worldwide than fossil. Energy companies are desperately trying to limit access to the grid to prevent competition from home solar installations, but that can't last. Technology will take care of that strategy. With cheap electricity comes cheap and abundant water. Desalination of salt water now only needs 2kWh per cubic meter (@ 0.25 cents). We don't have scarce water in most places, we only have scarce drinking water. Imagine what will be possible if anyone can have as much clean water as he wants, for nearly no cost. Health: The Tricorder X price will be announced this year. There are companies who will build a medical device (called the "Tricorder" from Star Trek) that works with your phone, which takes your retina scan, your blood sample and you breath into it. It then analyses 54 biomarkers that will identify nearly any disease. It will be cheap, so in a few years everyone on this planet will have access to world class medical analysis, nearly for free. Goodbye, medical establishment. 3D printing: The price of the cheapest 3D printer came down from $18,000 to $400 within 10 years. In the same time, it became 100 times faster. All major shoe companies have already started 3D printing shoes. Some spare airplane parts are already 3D printed in remote airports. The space station now has a printer that eliminates the need for the large amount of spare parts they used to have in the past. At the end of this year, new smart phones will have 3D scanning possibilities. You can then 3D scan your feet and print your perfect shoe at home. In China, they already 3D printed and built a complete 6-storey office building. By 2027, 10% of everything that's being produced will be 3D printed. Business opportunities: If you think of a niche you want to go in, ask yourself: "in the future, do you think we will have that?" and if the answer is yes, how can you make that happen sooner? If it doesn't work with your phone, forget the idea. And any idea designed for success in the 20th century is doomed to failure in the 21st century. Work: 70-80% of jobs will disappear in the next 20 years. There will be a lot of new jobs, but it is not clear if there will be enough new jobs in such a small time. Agriculture: There will be a $100 agricultural robot in the future. Farmers in 3rd world countries can then become managers of their field instead of working all day on their fields. Aeroponics will need much less water. The first Petri dish produced veal, is now available and will be cheaper than cow produced veal in 2018. Right now, 30% of all agricultural surfaces is used for cows. Imagine if we don't need that space anymore. There are several startups who will bring insect protein to the market shortly. It contains more protein than meat. It will be labeled as "alternative protein source" (because most people still reject the idea of eating insects). There is an app called "moodies" which can already tell in which mood youre in. By 2020 there will be apps that can tell by your facial expressions, if you are lying. Imagine a political debate where it's being displayed when theyre telling the truth and when theyre not. Bitcoin may even become the default reserve currency. Of the world. Longevity: Right now, the average life span increases by 3 months per year. Four years ago, the life span used to be 79 years, now it's 80 years. The increase itself is increasing and by 2036, there will be more that one year increase per year. So we all might live for a long long time, probably way more than 100. Education: The cheapest smart phones are already at $10 in Africa and Asia. By 2020, 70% of all humans will own a smart phone. That means, everyone has the same access to world class education. Every child can use Khan academy for everything a child learns at school in First World countries. We have already released our software in Indonesia and will release it in Arabic, Suaheli and Chinese this Summer, because I see an enormous potential. We will give the English app for free, so that children in Africa can become fluent in English within half a year. Boom!

Was asked to post a few pics of my 701. This tractor came from Terry via Ken. Currently have the original 701 style snow plow and mower deck. Since I've aquired it, added the HL-5 setup thanks to Scott and Ron. The rear fenders had some mismatched nuts and bolts that O replaced which strengthened everything. Currently need the front hood tab welded. Does have a few leaks but for its age, really a very nice tractor. Think Terry may have repainted the hood but is perfect for me. Next little addition will be duals and that is for looks. Do not plan to use this tractor much....it IS one of my "bucket list" tractors. Thanks everyone for looking D. J.

Wanted an easier way to bust the beads loose on the 8" wheels common on the front of most garden tractor brands so I decided to I would fab something up at work and give it a try on my 520H front tires I was replacing, basically 2 pieces of 1/4" 3"x3" angle iron welded to a 3/4" x3"x 9" long flat CRS with a 3/4" hole drilled in the center and foot of 3/4"-16 all-thread and another 3/4"x3"x3" with 3/4" hole...and how it works...break 1 side flip break the other then dismount the old tire all done with a box end wrench no air tools or hammering on your hands,Jeff.

Me personally , I hope I'm dead and gone before all this happens . I really do hope I don't have any grandchildren , so they don't have to deal with this crap hole of the world we live in now . These smart phones are just making kids stupider , because they don't have to think about answer , they just google it . The country is being run by energy co. , banks , pharmaceutical co. , and insurance companies lining the pocketbooks of politicians ! Look and see who your congressman and senator's biggest contributors are . I've seen this firsthand testifying at a hearing at the capital and l wanted to see who their biggest contributors were , guess who , insurance companies .I've been warned by my lawyers to stay off the Computer because the insurance company uses algorithms and they just keep getting more advanced to keep track of me and my families every move . What do they think , I'm just going to get up and walk . I constantly feel like I'm under a microscope and have to watch my every move and how I word things . As careful as I am I'm sure they've already found me on this forum. It seems that more technology becomes available the less freedoms we have . It's scary to think how easy it is to keep track of someone. When and if the world economy implodes guess who was going to survive. It's going to be the people of Third World countries and self-reliant people who don't use technology and do things with their brains , hands , and can live off the land . Sorry for the rant, just my ! Believe me I hate talking politics and religion and I feel everybody has the right to think and say what they want . This is the U.SA. Mods feel free to delete this if it's too political , but this forum is the best head therapy I've found . It's what keeps me sane !

I was tinkering around on Craigslist and ran across an ad for a Wheel Horse Edger. Did a little research, here, of course, and learned it was a re-branded McLane. I used McLane edgers for commercial landscape maintenance when I was in school and they were bullet proof. The model serial number doesn't show up anything on the toro parts page, but I am guessing it was made in the mid-80's. Needs the correct negative action throttle cable and a new air filter. I think I have located both on eBay. It rolls very solid. Was tickled to find it. My son will be getting the MTD edger I have.

I had a best dog I ever had Chesapeake that got diabetes and that caused it to go totally blind in both eyes. The diabetes thing cost me five horses and my BIL is a vet! Didn't stop her tho, still retrieved by smell. I wouldn't worry about it Glenn unless it is causing her pain.

You know, I used to have a spark, but it is more like a fizzle now.
  14. 3 points
Yes, I agree, it would be rough on the tractor, and unstable if very high, but if you used it more like a Johnny Bucket until you needed to dump, it is a good idea. I think I would still make a subframe to spread the load back to the rear axles.
  15. 3 points
Any garden tractor with a heavy load in a bucket lifted high is unstable; I have loaded tires, 130 pounds of wheel weights and a 200 pound weight box for a Johnson Workhorse FEL on my GT-14 and you don't want to turn it or be on a side hill with the loaded bucket more than a few inches off the ground.
  16. 2 points
Built a blade to replace the bucket and connected it to the arms of the loader. Works nice using the float position and could raise it up high to push off the tops of the big piles. Worked good for back dragging in tight areas too. Haven't used it for few years because I prefer zipping around on a little 654 for plowing snow and now use a big 2 stage for blowing. Also used to use a single stage on the FEL tractor too and used the loader to lift it.

Sure thing on the measurements. Contact me tomorrow at (860)930-3354 Jason. I can verbalize it to you in more detail. This goes for anyone else that is interested also. .75" thick x2.5" flat stock. 19.25" long end & 15" short end on center. 2 end plates at 2.75"x2.75"x.375" That is your materials i can explain the rest on the phone. If your coming to Stevebo's next month i can fab one up for you?
  20. 2 points
Yes fenders are the same. The tractor in the picture without the engine is worth about 200.00 in my opinion as long as the trans is good.

You have to open it back up...that snap ring is spring steel and will wreak havoc with the spider gears. Have the shallow side of the transmission down. Take off the deep side and pull out the differential. You do not have to take apart the rest of the trans. Open the differential and find you spring. Like Paul said...the sharp side of the ring points out or toward the center of the differential. If you think the groove is ruined drill a 1/4" hole in the end of the axle and put in a 1/4" roll pin. The roll pin should be 1 1/2" long if you have a 1" axle.

Wheel weights are some kind of patina yellow?? Thinkin there was a snow plow on it at some time? A look around sellers property turned up nothing tho. OH and tires ....choice originals with the WH on them and not cracked or checked AT ALL! Not a speck of rust in the gas tank either!! Deck is in way better shape than the one on my 1067 & spindles real quiet.
  35. 2 points
That's unusual because the pump is quite simple basically a diaphragm pump worked by the lever I have used the aftermarket ones since kohler went crazy and started charging so much for them and have had no problems, personally I think that they are all the same other than the packaging so it could be a whole bunch of defective out in the supply chain. Maybe some genius decided to change the design because I have had them apart and I don't remember any white plastic piece

Thank you for posting these pics. Yours is still in good shape for sure. I know what you mean about the new nuts and bolts strengthening everything up. After replacing most of the nuts and bolts on my 701 the tractor felt like it was welded together. I was surprised at what a difference the new hardware made.

Dennis, the 523Dxi is a good base. I don't have a 522xi to compare apples to apples though. My other two are an 18 and a 20 without power steering. Here are a list of Pros and Cons, as I see them, between a 522xi and a 523Dxi. Pro -523Dxi 23 hp claimed very easy on fuel hydraulic steering and lift more than enough power and torque Con -523Dxi the typical diesel issue of cold weather starts. It does have glow plugs. Mine has never failed to start. radiator fan moves a ton of air inside the cab so there isn't any heat. heavier front end but can be compensated with wheel weights and rear weight. Pro - 522xi 22 hp claimed hydraulic steering and lift less airflow through cab due to smaller fan for air-cooled engine. Con - 522xi gas consumption. not as much torque as the diesel. My only complaint with my 523Dxi is the airflow with the cab. With regards to the airflow in the 523Dxi equipped with a cab, it doesn't need as much flow in the winter as summer so a way could be found to block or re-direct the airflow. For example, a Kubota BX has a removable panel beneath the hoodstand and there are available covers to block the air screens which are similar to the 5xi. I have thought of a few ideas but haven't acted on them yet.

You will find that tractor guys, especially garden tractor guys, have an interest for any color, any brand of garden tractor. I like seeing other brands and do a quick comparison of the different designs, different approaches the manufacturers do to engineer the same thing on each tractor, etc. You will learn a lot and also teach others, who, as I said, do have a large interest in other brands. What you will find also, that if a Cub Cadet guy, for instance, sees your Wheel Horse at a show, he may decide he wants one and then next year, there will be two Wheel Horses at that same show. Don't get discourage, go and mingle, and learn and teach, and observe, and compare.

9-26-1960 First Kennedy-Nixon debate For the first time in U.S. history, a debate between major party presidential candidates is shown on television. The presidential hopefuls, John F. Kennedy, a Democratic senator of Massachusetts, and Richard M. Nixon, the vice president of the United States, met in a Chicago studio to discuss U.S. domestic matters. Kennedy emerged the apparent winner from this first of four televised debates, partly owing to his greater ease before the camera than Nixon, who, unlike Kennedy, seemed nervous and declined to wear makeup. Nixon fared better in the second and third debates, and on October 21 the candidates met to discuss foreign affairs in their fourth and final debate. Less than three weeks later, on November 8, Kennedy won 49.7 percent of the popular vote in one of the closest presidential elections in U.S. history, surpassing by a fraction the 49.6 percent received by his Republican opponent. One year after leaving the vice presidency, Nixon returned to politics, winning the Republican nomination for governor of California. Although he lost the election, Nixon returned to the national stage in 1968 in a successful bid for the presidency. Like Lyndon Johnson in 1964, Nixon declined to debate his opponent in the 1968 presidential campaign. Televised presidential debates returned in 1976, and have been held in every presidential campaign since. Something tells me that this evening’s debate may be a bit livelier than the Nixon-Kennedy showing.

Are you sure the eye is just not clouded but actually needs cataract surgery? Our little dogs have eyes that look so clouded, you would swear it can't possibly see a thing. We asked about them while they were in for something else but a surgeon told us it's absolutely nothing to worry about and the dog can see fine. Doesn't seem to bother the dogs at all. And please don't try to ruin our fun! Just get your blanket and deal with it!
