6 pointsWelcome to the Machine Thought I would post up some recent modifications to The Machine prior to up coming plow season. After a good season of plowing last year it was time for some upgrades, not because what I had did not work, just wanted try to make it better. So I started with some new Firestone 16-6.5-8 tri ribs, and 23-10.5-12 23 degree bar tires, added an 1054 hy pump, with new seals and spring, welded cylinder rebuild with new hyd lines and lift cable and adjustable tie rods from @wheelhorseman1000. Also ordered up a 12" shear and moleboard from Brinly, and to hold the front end found an old cub that needed to be squashed for the weight on the from to hold all them ponies down. 5th( don't know how it moved it was 1st) picture is last years, all others are with modifications. Bring on plowing season.

5 pointsSee if you can find a label on the engine. The 1978 and 1979 C-161 Twin Cylinder should have a 16 HP Briggs & Stratton 401417. For $250 I would already have it on the trailer.

4 pointsI'm new to this forum and to Wheel Horse's. My son turns 11 next week and needs a young man's present. Namely a tractor to fix up. What do you folks think of this thing for $250? The owner calls it a C-181. The label seems to say "C-161." He says it's a 12 hp twin 8 speed. Please help me out. A good purchase? Or not?

4 pointsThis isn't a tractor but I didn't see another good place for it so here it is. Ever since I started collecting old reel mowers I've had an itch to find a wheel horse reel mower since I love my wheel horse tractors so much. Tonight I finally got to scratch that itch! I was so excited to get hold of this thing and it runs like a champ! I've not seen many of these so if you have one, I'd love to see it. I think it has an incorrect muffler and missing the drive belt shield so I will be on the lookout for those. Also downloaded the manual for it off of here.

4 pointsI'm thinking about cutting it off here at the weld with a sawzall. Then take this spare tire bracket and cut the angled steel off and have someone weld the pump bracket on. This way I can position the pump wherever it needs to be to avoid conflicting with other stuff. Just a thought.

4 pointsHeight control would have been more accurate. I have added a series of holes in the blade sway control pin so with a hairpin clip I can set the blade at any minimum height for plowing on the stone road.

4 pointsI guess I did not take any pictures of tractors, but I did get some of the golf course. The 1st hole from the tee. 2nd hole Shynon taking a swing JoeBob "cleaning" his balls. Might be the 5th fairway. The 10th...par 3 The 11th. Dennis on the tee. Tom, Joe and Dennis on the 12th Joe on the 16th. Another, near the 16th green. And one from the practice green. As you can see, this is a very scenic golf course...and the day was fantastic.

3 pointsThe twins had the fiberglass hoods to fit over the engine/mufflers. My '78 twin still runs perfect and has never had anything but regular maintenance. I'm not sure why mine has the metal rear seat pan instead of the plastic.

3 points8-30-1965 Casey Stengel retires On this day in 1965, New York Mets Manager Casey Stengel announces his retirement, ending his 56-year career in professional baseball. The 75-year-old Stengel had broken his hip in a fall the previous month, and was instructed by his doctor that resuming the duties of manager would take too great a toll on his health. Charles Dillon “Casey” Stengel made his big league debut as an outfielder with John McGraw’s New York Giants in 1912. He parlayed his guts and guile at the plate into a 14-year playing career in the National League. His greatest moment as a player came in the 1923 World Series with the Giants. With two outs in the ninth inning, Stengel won Game 1 with an inside-the-park home run. He also hit a game-winning homer in Game 3, and for the series, Stengel hit an impressive .417 with two home runs and four runs batted in, though the Giants lost to the Yankees four games to two. For his career, Stengel hit a respectable .284, with a .393 average in his three World Series appearances. Stengel’s real fame came as a manager. Though he had only middling success with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1934-1936) and Boston Braves (1938-1943), he managed to score a job with the New York Yankees in 1949 to replace the retiring Joe McCarthy, the winningest manager in major league history. Where he had previously managed only struggling teams, Stengel now had a roster of great players at his disposal. He made great use of platooning players, sitting right-handed hitters against right-handed pitchers and vice versa. His record of 1149 wins versus 696 losses with the Yankees over the next 12 seasons was among the greatest in managerial history, and included 10 American League pennants and seven World Series victories. After a heartbreaking loss in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series to the Pittsburgh Pirates, however, the Yankees replaced the 70-year-old skipper with Ralph Houk, believing Stengel was simply too old to manage. Stengel responded: “I’ll never make the mistake of being 70 again.” In 1962, the New York Mets, an expansion team, hired Stengel as manager. That team went 40-120, the worst record in major league history. They simply did not have good players, but Stengel held on for four seasons, trying to craft a contender out of a mix of young players lacking major league skill and washed-up veterans. All the while, the “Ol’ Perfesser,” as he as known, confounded and amused the press with his trademark doublespeak or “Stengelese,” including lines like, “They say it can’t be done, but it don’t always work.” It was no use, however: the Mets remained a losing team, and Stengel, exhausted by a long career, could sometimes be found napping on the bench. Stengel was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame as a manager in 1966. His record of five World Series victories in a row from 1949 to 1953 remains a standard for excellence in the major leagues.

3 pointsIs that hood fiberglass or metal? Looks like fiberglass. The C-161 was made for one year with a fiberglass hood (1980?). After that, all of the 'black hoods' were metal. The engine looks like a Kohler, so it may have been replaced. Not sure if the rear fender is original. You really need some numbers off of the manufactuer's plate to know what it started life as. Any way, if the engine runs well, I'd grab it if the price is reasonable. Nice tractor. If it's a Kohler (17hp ?), check to see whether it's a Series II with the oil pump. The earlier series 1 had some problems with oil circulation. Good luck, Jim PS: I think I see an oil filter on the back of the engine, which would make it the better Series II engine. Also, check the plastic rear fender for cracks or repairs. For $250, I'd drive it first, and then buy it fast.

3 pointsSorry guys I deleted my post because it was turning into a show. Witch I did not mean it to be. To update this I spent the time looking at all our videos and found that he was tacking tools and other merchandise from her. When he came in Monday morning I had law enforcement here waiting on him. They charge him with a class 2 felony This is all I can and will comment on this except finding the head bolts missing save me a bunch in the future.

3 pointsBeen so busy that I forgot to post pictures. Having an awful time power washing the house this year. The maple trees are stressed and producing a lot of air born sap mist that is settling on everything. That and the pollen has created a real mess on the siding with mildew and dirt. Done with my whine. Here's some pics. Also coated the roof with Henry Solar-Flex Roof Coating to reflect the heat and to reduce the amount of aluminum staining on the sides of the trailer.

2 pointsFound some old pics of my dad's tractors. Thought I would share a few. I think this one is possiblly a 704 or 854. He seems to remember owning a '64 model of some kind. Dad sold new Chevrolets and Buicks at the local dealer. That's a new '65 Impala in the drive and my mom's '62 Nova in the garage. This pic would be 1964-65. Oh, and that's me in the dump cart.

2 pointsGetting closer! The problem you ( and lots of others ) have run into is that paint is not a good electrical conductor. You have done a great job painting everything, but paid the price when it came to electrical connections. I was a bit surprised the head bolt didn't work as well.

2 pointsI learned this in 1973 from a Wheelhorse dealer / mechanic. ....After-market belts will roll because they are not geometrically matched to the V shape of the proprietary Wheelhorse pulley design. That is, the V shape of after-market belts do not perfectly fit the sides (and depth) of the proprietary pulley(s) giving them a propensity to roll-over. Once a belt rolls, go get another. Making the belt tighter and tighter only exacerbates a failing situation. Secondly....drawing the belt tighter and tighter will be detrimental to the bearings...ALL of them in the loop. IMHO....Spend a few bux more and get the OEM belts

2 pointsThe nose should be adjusted lower than the back of the deck for proper adj. if I remember right I think its somewhere around a 1/4 of a inch lower.
