Just told a another friend about my new Wheel Horse hobby. Then he sends me this picture , 80% restored sitting in his garage for sale.... yikes

So a few months ago I found a really unbelievable deal on this 1984 ski tique. I have been cleaning it up and had the stripe repainted. This boat came from the factory with lettering that was taped off and then painted the stripe around it so they never actually made decals for this year and model. As usual with I have a project I call Terry. He went above and beyond as always. The only ones he did not do are the two small ones in the back. Here are the results of Terry's decals!

Well, I'm sitting here for therapy with Dad. I've done a little to my roller I picked up from Limited12. Below are some pics. I've added 10.5" rear tires, a predator motor with custom rear exit exhaust, and wheelie bars. I've used a peroxide, salt, vinegar solution to promote a rusty patina. With the straight piles this thing almost sounds like a motorcycle! Got a few more things in the works that I'll post later!

Good idea Howard ! And thanks for the jester . It would be easier to put names with faces . Maybe put a tracking device on @AMC RULES tag ! Then we keep track of his every move So I wouldn't have to ask everyone ( where's Craig ) . It it seemed like everyone knew who I was . Must've been my good looks ?

I think this is the best thread I've ever ready on any forum anywhere! Kudos to Racinbob and thank you richie for sharing another great story. You have been truly blessed. The Red Square members are some of the best, most helpful, caring and polite group of folks I've known. The Red Square forum is the best forum I've ever been involved with also. Richie: Your dad was a very special person -no doubt about it. I sent him a seat pan for a Wheel Horse that he was having trouble finding to redo a tractor for one of his grandsons. My brother David and I had the great pleasure of meeting him in 2010 when we came down to the Florida Flywheeler's Show in February. We scheduled one day to go to your dad's place (which was a very circuitous route from the Flywheeler's show grounds) as we had shared the interest in Wheel Horse tractors and had given each other parts for projects, etc. Your dad even had your mom take a sickle bar mower off od a tractor wrapped in newspaper and placed in the back of her Toyota Camry to eastern Tennessee during a family reunion for us to pick up in a family member's barn! We visited in his house for a short time and then hit the barn and workshop with his collection. We did take a few pictures that day and I am glad to see one of those has made it to your banner Terry made. That picture shows how much your dad loved these tractors -no doubt about it. I think you told me once that you and your mom did not have any pictures of your dad with his tractors. After I learned he had passed away I think that is when I mentioned I had several and sent all I had for you and your family to keep. My brother and I still talk about the generosity of your dad and the special love he had for these Wheel Horse tractors.

Howard, you and a bunch of others made me feel right at home at the Big Show. Ideas like your MASH Pole got us out of our shells and gave us a reason to meet one another; Thanks.

Richie, thanks for sharing the story about your Dad, that's what makes this forum so special. I got to meet Bob at the show this year and you're right, he is a great guy.

I live out in the country, we got tons of them. I try not to hit any because they are bug eaters. We got one big one that hangs around are back door that nails any spider that comes within 10 in of him/her. Same for the tree frogs that hang around are porch lights at night.

Born to an immigrant family in Pennsylvania in 1924, Iacocca was hired by Ford as an engineer in 1946 but soon switched to sales, at which he clearly excelled. By 1960, Iaccoca had become a vice president and general manager of the Ford division, the company’s largest marketing arm. Toads are sooooo cool ! Thanks all for being kind to them . I used to mow about 4/5 acres ( as payment for a parking spot while we rode ) using my redneck Swisher setup & can't count all the times i nearly went over the bars stopping for one .

Who has tall grass?

Just a quick share before I forget. There are a few weeds that you need to kill like around sidewalks and such. i carry a spray bottle of white vinegar and it takes them out by drying them up. Very fast kill on most things. It will kill the grass as well, but a few dead spots by the highway is no big deal to me.. I buy high strength cleaning vinegar at Wal Mart by the gallon for cleaning and it works well. I lost a relative due to ag spraying and never spray without protective clothing. Vinegar is safe to carry with no toxic worries.

When I am doing spot spraying I carry a 2' piece of 3" PVC on a short rope; Put it down over the weed, spray inside and surrounding plants are protected.

i was driving rusty off a trail to turn around and there was 50+ 1/2 inch toads that where in a cluster and now when i mow i watch out for them and stop then move them.

Too late! It's already happened but I wouldn't have it any other way. I even found some Rock & Rye down here. So many well said comments about the folks in this hobby. The little red tractors we all love happen to be the catalyst for what brings us all together but all I can think of is that there’s something a little special about those blessed with incurable WHA. I never had the pleasure of meeting Jerry but, based on the wonderful comments here, I’d say that there’s no doubt that Richie makes his father very proud as he watches down on him. I am happy that I was able to do this for Richie as well as the others things I’ve done but it pales to what so many of you have done for others as well as me. The two brothers that I became acquainted weren’t Wheel Horse people were going to sell all four Wheel Horses they inherited but decided to keep one of them and fix it up. That wasn’t because of me but rather because of them getting on this forum and being so impressed by the camaraderie amongst all the folks on Red Square and the willingness for everyone here to help others. It would be futile and unnecessary to try to list names. Just look at the member list and there you have it.

Another baby step of progress was made yesterday. I picked up the belts at NAPA but could not do any wrenching last night due to having to be at a dinner meeting. I probably will have to work today till around 7pm so I'm not sure about working on the 701 after I get home. But here is a pic of the belts with the part numbers for the records. I am very grateful to those who chimed in with advice on what belts to buy.

Lane, that is the only picture that I have of him with a wheelhorse other than the one of you & your brother with him. I am so glad that you guys took those. I wish I had more but at least I have that one. This post wasn't meant to be about me and my dad. But that is the common ground we shared to get me here to the best forum on the internet. I wish I had helped him more than I did but life gets in the way sometimes. I know everyone out there has stories of their fathers. This is just a little part of mine as having to do with the wheel horse tractors. I urge everyone out there to take the time to spend moments with your family members. You guys ever encounter toads while mowing? I don't want to run any over but it's like they have a death wish or something... Any suggestions

Funny story and most likely one reason for safety switches. My sister in-law, who is extremely afraid of snakes was mowing the lawn one day with my brothers old Cub Cadet hydo. Well, she happened to hit a snake and freaked out. She jumped off the tractor and ran into the house, the tractor just kept rolling along until it ran into a tree where it sat with the wheels spinning until my brother got home about 15min later. Sure wish I would have been there to see it first hand. Funny story now but it could have turned out real bad.

If it's for just the young kids to drive alone: ••• Consider going to an even lower tire pressure, like 6 – 8PSI, that would slow the tractor slightly and cushion the bumps a lot more. ••• Could bolt in a small plate so the shifter cannot go into 3rd gear, or to lock the Hi-Low lever into only low gear. ••• A vinyl seat can be very slippery, a secure cloth cover would help, and then securely moving the seat a little further forward. ••• I clamped 4" wood blocks on the two foot levers, for short legs. ••• A engine kill switch for the seat, like the newer models have would be a very safe addition. ••• Two children on the same seat can create a lot more problems, someway to narrow the seat and to make the fenders unseatable for little butts. I worry a lot about little feet getting caught in/under the rear wheels, to re-invent the old "Wheel Well Skirts" (have to be over 70 to know what they are) would reduce that chance . Glen

By now you guys know that these tractors down south are a rare find, implements and attachments, fogetaboutit. So the other day cruising CL I came across this 10 miles away, called the guy he said come look and make me an offer. 32in harrow disc $70 got it for $50. No model # but I think its a DP-861, serial # A-75947 so mid 60's maybe. Discs turn good, zerks all good, top adjustment shoulder bolts may never come loose.Going to clean it up and put it on the burb, or the 702.

Well it's back from the land of the dead. I posted this last month about the knock after i put my 48" deck on it and got about 100 feet and it started knocking. I got a lot of help about checking rod and crank for out of round or ware from Rmaynard,Spinjim,Malmac,Ken B,Shynon WH nut,bds1984,Can Whlvr,Buckshot1 and TT .Thanks guys for your help. I did check those and every thing was good as far as in specifications. Every thing looked good but after i found the front balance gear snap ring comming off i checked the pictures i posted and low and behold there it was in the picture. i tryed to reinstall the snap ring but it was too sloppy,i tryed to bend it closed but when i spred to put it on post it was to sloppy. So i bought new snap rings for both balance gears and replaced them. Now it sounds like it should.this engine has been rebuilt before i got it.Sorry TT i just couldn't brake the rear balance gear as you posted, This engine runs to good. I just wanted to repost this for those of us that don't know enough about these engines.If i would have found the balance gears sloppy i would have taken them out. I had a feeling that it didn't sound like a rod knock,But i didn't know a balance gear would make that kind of noise either. Picture #1 shows the balance gear snap ring half way off ,Picture BEFORE and AFTER are self-evident . my only advice is if you have balance gears and want to keep them replace the snap rings if you ever open the engine .

I have a charger 10 that is used for nothing but a cruiser for grandkids. A complaint about the rough ride got me to thinking (uh oh), has anyone ever attempted to improve the ride of a wheel horse? If so, how did you do it?

We have had tons of rain in my neck of the woods and my wife wants the grass cuttings for the garden. I let eleven days lapse between mowing and set mower deck 1 lower than the highest adjustment and make a huge clumpy mess. Really looks terrible!! The next day I hook the 44 inch lawn sweeper on the old 520H and get some more seat time sitting under my umbrella in the shade collecting huge amounts of grass to dump near the garden. My wife loves to spread the grass around to keep the weeds down. A happy wife means a happy life! I got the best of both worlds.......

There are no toads here. It is so dry, my Ding Weeds have stopped growing!

If it's got the original tire's on it, they may have become more stiff and not as ply able as they once were. Not giving at all over small bumps. Almost acting as a solid rubber tire. Instead of the tire absorbing the shock it just transfer it right up through the tractor to the operator.

Who'd thought the K-car and MiniVan could've done that.

Ooof. I guess I'll go ahead and be the party pooper lol... Man, you'll never find a tractor (or anything else for that matter) that'll live up to the hype you've created since you were a little kid. Forget it. Throw in the towel now while you still have half a chance. Pay the freckled kid down the road to mow and shovel, and take the money you just saved yourself and get yourself a new recliner - for the garage! PS, one of them college fridges work nice as a table next to your new recliner. Paste a bunch of Cub Cadet, John Deere, of and why not, NASCAR crap all over it and man you'll be the envy of every neighbor out there.

Sometimes the just appears down the road. Quick story. My Commando 800 died, the deck was shot and was using something to cut grass. Looking in the Saturday paper, " Whelhorse tractor for sale selling to settle father in laws estate call - - - - - - $450.00 " Called ,what model ? Don't know. What comes with it " uh deck , chains, snow blade not sure of HP " Give me your address ' Uh can you come before lunch ? , I'll be there in 30 minutes. Got to the guy's place figuring I'll talk down the price. He opens the shed ,jumps on the horse , starts it backs it out . A 1987 310-8 ,with 36"rd deck snow plow and wheel horse chains. Gave him $450.00 and it has been working here ever since. Once and a while it needs some attention other than regular maintenance. Look at the gallery , check C L , fleabay ,classifieds here ,check out estate sales yard sales and drive by places that work on mowers. You just never know.
