Dad is finally getting a lite sleep, so I thought I'd post this. I finally got all of our horses tucked away in their new stall this last week. There might even be enough room for another horse or two next year at the big show. Maybe a front powered round hood or lawn ranger. Just don't tell the wife

So I have always been into old outboards and boats but as of about 3-4 years ago my buddy Kenb invited me to a meet (kinda like meet and greet). After that my son and I were hooked. We joined the club and another member sent me this photo of my son Brennan changing motors at a local meet on the river in Shelton last fall. This photo was on the cover of the club's magazine. Pretty cool stuff and thought I would share.

I bought a 1990 520-H tractor a few years ago from Shallowwatersailor. I just love this tractor, she's a beast! I was given permission from John to use a "520-H Club Member" image from his RedSquare signature on my signature. I don't believe there is actually a "520-H Club" that I know of. So, if anyone here on RedSquare would like to use this image in your RedSquare signatures, feel free to download the image from one of my posting signatures and use it as well in yours. Wouldn't mind seeing how many other RedSquare members own the big horse. Find the "520-H Club Member" image on the signature of one of my posts. You should be able to "right click" on it and then hit "save image as...". You will be saving the image in any file folder you select on your computer. Then go up the top right corner of the RedSquare home page and click on your display name. Then click on "account settings". From the menu on the left, select "signature". This is where you can type whatever you want in your signature. Select "choose files..." to upload the "520" image from your computer into this area and then you must insert the image into your signature. I've already got Phatboy to join the club. So, our unofficial "520-H Club Membership" now stands at... 2 Dave

I picked up these 1956 and 1957 RJ-35s from R&B Wheel Horse Stables, and I also picked up a 401! The RJs weren't running at first, but thanks to Jason ( @whtractors24 ) he got both of them running great for me by doing some carb and point adjustments. They start on the first or second pull. Thanks a lot Jason I appreciate it! I also picked up an original RJ35 brake kit from Vin ( @VinsRJ ) for my 1956 RJ-35. Thanks Vin! It was very nice meeting all fellow Redsquare members this year. To all Redsquare members, the show had an amazing outcome. Whoever hasn't been to the show yet, I highly suggest you to make it next year, you'll have an amazing time!

Be kind to your back; I missed last year's show because I was having spinal surgery! As for Howard, @857 horse, what can I say.

I wanted to remove the steering wheel on the 416-8. No big deal .. right? I tried to punch the pin out while on the tractor ... 2x4 against the tree for support ... it had no thoughts of moving. OK... off with the whole column. I put it on the floor on a block of wood and there I could really wack on it. Still it was staying put. Now on to the press ... it just didn't fit in any safe position. That was all last evening. So this morning before work I went to the garage to look for a punch for the air chisel. But before I found one the vise caught my eye. I secured the column in the vise and started pounding on the punch. Not lightly ... see the hammer. Things started falling of the bench. (yeah ... I should clean it off) Finally I got it to move about ¼". Went to work optimistic. Got home, ate supper, went to the garage. Aww, this should be easy. NOT! After another good beating the pin finally gave in after a ½ hour. Victory is near! Now to remove the wheel .... it spun right off. That was the worst pin I have ever fought! I never put a pin back in ... a ¼" bolt works fine.

7-6-1994 Forrest Gump opens, wins Hanks a second Oscar On this day in 1994, the movie Forrest Gump opens in U.S. theaters. A huge box-office success, the film starred Tom Hanks in the title role of Forrest, a good-hearted man with a low I.Q. who winds up at the center of key cultural and historical events of the second half of the 20th century. Forrest Gump was based on a 1986 novel of the same name by Winston Groom, who (like his main character) grew up in Alabama and served in the Army during Vietnam. In the film–which included now-famous lines like “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get”–Forrest is a star runner and ping-pong prodigy who inadvertently rubs elbows with the key figures in a number of landmark events, from Elvis to the Civil Rights Movement to Watergate to the rise of Apple computers. He pursues and eventually marries his childhood friend Jenny, played by Robin Wright Penn, who veered from Forrest’s conservative path and became a hippie in the 1960s. Some commentators argued that Jenny’s eventual demise was a statement about the counter-culture movement in America. Forrest Gump received 13 Academy Award nominations and took home six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Hanks) and Best Director (Robert Zemeckis). The film also won an Oscar for its then-cutting-edge computer-generated imagery (CGI) special effects, which incorporated Forrest Gump into existing news footage with famous world figures including John F. Kennedy, John Lennon and Richard Nixon.

Why?? Well a rather nasty evil big blob of molten weld decided to jump and land on my wedding ring where it most unkindly burnt a hole through it and at the same time super-heated the top half of the ring to a very "ouch" sort of temperature! Getting the ring off was interesting to say the least, it's always been a very tight fit but still turned, but once my finger started swelling!! With the help of Google, a good chap by the name of Matt, and a length of fine string we managed to get the ring off without having to cut it! This was quite bad timing as it was our 9th wedding anniversary yesterday! For those of you who are saying I shouldn't wear the ring in the workshop, I've never taken it off as it doesn't/didn't really come off without a big fight!

Hey guys, this year was my first time to the big show and I was really impressed! I had a blast! Needless to say I seem to have caught an even bigger but about finding a horse. More specifically an RJ or Suburban. I'm not posting this in classifieds because it's not an intense search and I don't have a specific price range. Anyways, I'm hoping maybe some of you guys can help me out in finding one for a decent price. I'm a kid without a job so I don't have a fortune. I've always wanted a horse but now I think I've narrowed it down to what interests me the most as a first horse! Thanks a lot guys, only about 364 more days until next years show!

@gulftane , Yea , should have talked more with you . Seemed like the time flew by . They need to add a day . Even with set up , 2 1/2 days isn't enough time to see everyone and everything ( Believe me I talked to a lot of people ) . Next year doing things different ! And I will be asking for that ride , next year .

What year or model # is your Raider? They used a few different transmissions through those years. The hi/low in each is similar. If I had to guess what is going on with yours, it sounds like a few teeth have broken off on the gear that engages the low. If you are going to use the horse, depending on the damage and why, you could cause more damage. Usually, the heavy stuff sinks to the bottom, so if whatever stays out of the way of turning gears, you could be OK. If you use the horse and you hear anything that sounds like a 22 rifle firing, shut her down...the gears are spitting out pieces. Here is a link to rebuilding a 6 speed transmission, which you may have depending on your year. The 8 speed transmission is pretty much the same, so these videos will help you in either situation. Rebuilding a transmission is really pretty basic and easy with just a couple of hand tools...like a 9/16" open end wrench. Getting a stuck hub off may be the hardest part...and we will be here to walk you through it.

I love watching Wheeler Dealers. It comes on here in the US on the Velocity network. I love seeing the older British cars, like the Rover PB8 (I think I got that right). I also love seeing the British countryside. But, as I watch that show, I can still see good old quality work being done by local shops there in the UK. I don't know how many there are, and how prosperous they are, but it seems quality isn't dead yet. Truth be told, if Toro was still making Wheel Horses today, who here would buy one. The cost of a new one versus a MTD or Craftsman would be quite high. I don't think, as Toro claims, the demand for them went down, but they were becoming too expensive to buy and to produce. I know we all would claim we would buy a new one, but how many really will? And why buy a new one, if your 1988 is still going strong? That's another downside to quality. It lasts, therefore there is no need to buy a new one. So, the throw away, disposable tractors is what we have today so companies can make money.

The hood isn't a very good indicator of the year in itself. It's an often, and very easy, item to swap out. The rectangular cutout does scream 1960 but the 2 piece transmission case confirms a 551. That model along with the 701 were the first with the 2 piece 5007 transmission. A couple of guys at the show were trying to claim that there was a rare model 500 that was a 1960 with a 2 piece case. With the way Wheel Horse did things back not much would surprise me but I'd have to see some hard evidence. A 551 with a 400 hood does not equal a 500.

If you're willing to take a drive to the GR airport, I've got a 42" SD deck in better shape that you can have! It came from a 78 C-101 so it should fit right up! It's not perfect, but if you want it, come n get it!

Got into the tear down last night. I am very impressed with the enginerring of her. I am taking my time and using copious amounts of PB Blaster to loosen all the frozen parts. The parking brake is still frozen solid and hopefully I will make some progress on that today. Crawling under her and really taking the time to understand hiow she works is both educational and entertaining. This is fun and my girl thinks I have lost my mind....which is fun in itself Thank you to enreyone who has offered thier advice. I really appreciate it! Marty

My 1277 after pushing some dirt in preparation for the outdoor living area (that has still not been built LOL) My wife pulling the aerator over the yard with her Commando V8. Wish I had some pictures of me and the 1277 dragging logs out of a customers backyard a couple months back, never thought to have the wife take any, but we cut some logs that were 3.5-4' around and 5-6' long and the old girl drug them out of the gate like they were sticks LOL

I would like to personally thank everyone for the help at the show ( list is to long to post ) . This was my first time to the show , what an experience . I can't thank you guys and gals enough for your hospitality and generosity ! This is one great group of people. I don't think I could have done it without you . If it was just for some shade , water, cup of ice , or just some advice . Can't forget Bob , with the help with the charger . It's great to see people come together and help each other out . I couldn't go anywhere without someone introducing themselves. It's nice to put names with faces. The heat and the long drive took a toll on my body, but I'm recovering . Let me just say the people of are the best ! This show has to be on your bucket list .

I am wondering what I might be in for when i take the thing apart this winter. With the low range lever engaged, all four gears can be shifted without using the clutch at all. There is a time lag when you shift into gear, and it can be maybe 2-3 seconds before any forward or reverse motion happens in the lowest gears. After pulling a heavy log the other day, there was a bit of grinding and then back to the way it was. High range is a normal operation and requires clutching to operate, When I top a hill, the force of gravity will cause the tractor to coast a couple of feet in both low and high range until the transmission slows it down. That is about it on the symptoms that make it appear to have a problem. I plan to change the axle keys when I pull it apart as they are just a bit loose. i changed the transmission fluid shortly after purchase about a month ago and the oil looked dark with just a bit of tan streaks from water i would judge it to be pretty dry in the trans case from my observations. I elevated the tractor two feet at the front and even sucked the last remnants of the trans oil out with a vacuum and small tube, The last bits [about four ounces] were tan colored, so it does pay to be as thorough.as possible. I plan to keep mowing with it in high range unless something else develops or unless you know of a compelling reason I should not use the machine. I have never had one apart before, but it looks like I need to think about the procedure and ordering whatever bearings and seals you guys recommend. If anyone has any ideas what the problem could be, please advise. Any rebuild links are also appreciated

Joe Bob tried to tell me he justed started on this build the week before with crap he "just had laying around" ...yah right Joe! Dave's @Fun Engineer show cooler The kid on this tractor was a riot... comes and looks at my RJ and says he wants it ...I says hey kid I just bought it gimme some seat time first! Turns out he wants a rear engine model in the worst way so I commenced to explain the meaning of nut roasters to him. Well get you sell it to me?? Well ok I says 9 bills and she's yours...thats what I just paid for it. Would ya take 500 (as he starts to flash some cash out of his pocket)! This is when i figure out the kid's for real! I says sorry can't take that much of a beating.

I guess I can count myself as a lucky man; first date my wife and I had was at a dirt track stock cad race in July in Florida! Figured she was a keeper if she enjoyed that and Street Rod runs: tractor shows came along later and she allows me to fly solo there.

interesting comments... we have the same issues here in the UK where some great cars and manufacturers have just disappeared never to return. We all have fond memories of them - however unreliable they were at the time. Owning 13 wheel horses and a few other makes gives me an insight into the build quality and durability of them - there hasn't been one issue we couldn't fix! Unfortunately whether we all like it or not, we have all contributed to the demise of Wheel Horse and many other great makes. We have just lost the ubiquitous Land Rover from the UK after 67 years of production. Yes they were bomb proof, but they were built in small numbers and very expensive to produce.... btw (I have one and love it) Our never ending thirst to get a bargain and buy things cheaper drives these things. We have just had a vote here in the UK to be independent again (not sure if it makes the US, but huge news here) Many dream of the old days and how great it was - truth is it wasn't. They blame Europe and China for our economy, yet 95% of us will buy the cheap Chinese ipod charge lead for £1, we buy 4 pints of milk for £0.80... We I was a kid it was £0.30 a pint delivered.... That was 30 years ago, we can see how farmers can't make a living here if we aren't really prepared to pay what something is really worth... We can buy a Lamb joint from New Zealand for £8, the British one without the 5000 mile shipping is £10!!! sorry to ramble on... I have to look at it as a whole and see it as progress - things move on no matter how nostalgic we are

I'm manager of a local hardware store and I can see some bothersome trends. While the dollar has always been important today's price point pressure from imports has taken value to a new perspective. Most all of us know that when Harbor Freight takes on Snap-On price-wise there is NO comparison, but while we might also say that when Snap-On takes on Harbor Freight performance, precision, durability and so on there is also no comparison but to the everyday consumer the difference in price just can't be understood or withstood! Both brand wrenches will remove most nuts most of the time! And for the average consumer that's all he needs! Making a great product is one thing. Making money is another and while corporations might prefer to make great products, they have to make money to exist. Apparently it's hard to make both quality and profit... Wheel Horse did both for a very long time and their products and legacy continues. Thankfully Toro kept them going for as long as they could and still make money! I guess it's mostly up to us to make Wheel Horse products and their legacy last as long as it can...

Kind of a reflection of the throw away world that we live in. If it's not the current "in" thing, then it doesn't matter! Sort of a revisionist view of the past - write it until it suits one's current needs or view, forget about the actual past.
