6 pointsSpent the last 6 months and hundreds of hours bringing this old 1974 MTD 960 back to life. It's powered by a 16 hp cast iron B&S. Drive is via an automotive type dry clutch to a Peerless 2300 transaxle. The deck and tiller are drive shaft driven via a 2 belt pto. And yea, I had some paint left over so it's now classic red. The entire frame is 3/16" steel with the exception rear frame plate which is 1/4". She's not a trailer queen by any stretch but is one heck of a worker. Below it's hooked to a Brinly 7 tine cultivator for garden duty. It shares a barn with the Horses and another red tractor and they get along together just fine!

5 pointsSmear grease on the drill and tap to catch the chips from going into the trans case.

5 pointsGuy near me wants to sell me his 1077, but I don't really have an idea on its value. Rebuilt motor, new starter, tires, and belts. Here's a not so awesome picture. Comes with front blade. What do you guys think? He likes some of my other horses, with the wife's wisdom teeth removal friday I don't have much play money, buuuut I have a way of finding it for the right deal!

5 points5-29-2003 Bob Hope celebrates 100th birthday Some 35 U.S. states declare it to be Bob Hope Day on this day in 2003, when the iconic comedic actor and entertainer turns 100 years old. In a public ceremony held in Hollywood, city officials renamed the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Avenue–famous for its historic buildings and as a central point on the Hollywood Walk of Fame–Bob Hope Square. Several 1940s-era U.S. planes flew overhead as part of an air show honoring Hope’s longtime role as an entertainer of U.S. armed forces all over the world. Hope, who was then suffering from failing eyesight and hearing and had not been seen in public for three years, was too ill to attend the public ceremonies. Three of his children attended the naming ceremony, along with some of his younger show-business colleagues, including Mickey Rooney. One of the leading talents on the vaudeville scene by the 1930s, the London-born, American-raised Hope met his future wife (of nearly seven decades), the nightclub singer Dolores Reade, while he was performing on Broadway in the musical Roberta. They married in 1934, and four years later Hope launched his own radio program, The Bob Hope Show, which would run for the next 18 years. One of the country’s most popular comics, Hope had a successful film career largely thanks to the series of seven “Road” movies he made with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour, including Road to Singapore (1940), Road to Morocco (1942), Road to Utopia (1946) and Road to Rio (1947). In 1941, after America’s entrance into World War II, Hope began performing for U.S. troops abroad; he would play shows for more than a million American servicemen by 1953. Some 65 million people watched him perform for troops in Vietnam on Christmas Eve in 1966, in his largest broadcast. Hope also became a legend for his countless TV specials, which he would perform over the course of some five decades. He hosted the Academy Awards ceremony a total of 18 times, more than any other Oscars host. Dubbed “Mr. Entertainment” and the “King of Comedy,” Hope died on July 27, 2003, less than two months after his 100th birthday celebration. He was survived by Dolores, their four adopted children–Linda, Anthony, Nora and Kelly–and four grandchildren

4 pointsI just bought a 414-8 and it needs a little work. I have been able to download the parts and operating manual for the tractor model (31-14K804) and the snow blower model 06-42ST07. I have found the parts downloads for the front mower carrier 07-01mC03 and the 42 inch mower 15-42SC01. I cannot find the operating/service manuals for the front mower carrier and mower. Just trying to get everything on paper before I start tackling the clean up and repair. Am very impressed with this site. Didn't know it existed until a few weeks ago and it was part of the reason I felt ok about buying this tractor to fix up. Gary

4 pointsThat's what I like about this site...we all have each others back...and I think it is safe to say...those of us that are over 21...like beer. I combined the 2 threads to make it 1. Easier to understand.
-
4 pointsI think the term you're looking for is blind hole. I like the idea of re-tapping for 7/16". There's a lot of stress on those 4 bolts. I would do all 4 just so they are the same. I would open the case but if you're careful you should be fine not doing so. On the bottom blind holes start with a taper tap (left) and finish up with a bottoming tap (right). Sorry WV, typing at the same time.

4 pointsHere you go AMC RULES, lights still work after 10 yrs !!! That's how long she has been setting I understand. They did try to make it look nice, added a trim bezel around the lights. Those are automotive fog lamps, had some like that on my old car. They used 1 1/4" angle steel as a base mount for the lights. I think I'll keep them.

3 pointsI have been working on building a quieter stack muffler. After three muffler builds I have reduced the dB from 86 at wot to 78. All three mufflers run at 69 - 72 dB at idle. I have kept the size the same on each one 2.5" x 8". Using 1.5 od for the stack. This seems to give the best tone.

3 pointsWell went in to buy a filter and some washers at a local business . As I'm at parts counter , behind me my wife is talking to a salesman. Next thing I know, I hear it will be there Saturday. It's a Simplicity Courier 25HP B&S 54" cut idiot proof homeowner special. Don't even need a wrench to change oil .So will see what this thing is capable of . I'll keep you posted.
-
3 pointsGood luck with that...if you think you can just add stuff and not do any elbow grease...not in this world and not on this planet. I'm concerned that the acid you did may have fused the gears together. Maybe not, but you still have not come clean with what you did. I, and a few others are trying to help you, and it seems like it is falling on deaf ears. I am not giving up trying to help you...but I am wearing thin.

3 pointsHey you never know what a hillbilly might be contemplating...SBC engine swap for failing ONAN??? ...Jeff....now back to fixing those stripped trans threads...

3 pointsClosed hole = "blind" hole which would use a "bottoming" tap open hole= "through" hole which would be a starter or "gun" tap...and if you're going to remove transmission one could just "fill" the stripped hole with "weld"(have to be really careful with cast iron) redrill and tap is one of our long term fixes at work also there are better thread repair inserts on the market but you still have to drill bigger to install, "Gardsert" hardened thread inserts for 1, EZ LOK another, are some we use at work on industrial machinery,Jeff.

3 pointsNothing wrong with that horse...as far as working it. That trailer, although it may not be a Wheel Horse, is worth $500. You can pull that horse on the trailer...drop the horse and then pull the trailer with the horse. BOOM-SHA-KA-LAK-A

2 pointsTHATS awesome! I could make a 3000 gallon one with this fiberglass tank I got outside!!! But I like my tank so ill probably not go that big....but I bet I could get my dad to let us use the 50gallon plastic barrels we got. I remember seeing something of there was a way to use this setup and transfer or coat the parts in the tank with whatever the rods were made of. Like zinc coating your own parts or copper coating...electrolysis it may require different chems or setup but was somethin close. thanks I will probably try this along with a soaking tank. thanks school is in session...im sure I will learn many lessons!! And we can all learn from my mistakes!

2 pointsActually AG tires DON'T tear up the grass/yard as you/one would assume yes they "bite in" but since you have good traction they don't loose it as fast as turf tires which spin out faster and leave more/worse spots in the yard like in the picture, don't have this issue with my original 520 with AG tires but with my latest 520 with Turfs and weights on both, my ,Jeff.

2 pointsE-tanks are cheap, easy and effective. Here's a link to some good info on them: http://antique-engines.com/electrol.asp As Steve said, you will need to get the oil and crud out first. I like ZEP Industrial Purple cleaner and degreaser. I've got some parts soaking right now. Not only does it work well on grease it is pretty tough on the paint.
-
2 pointsHelicoil is ok if it's not a high stress/torque area (I'm a maintenance machinist in a factory and from my experiences they are only temporary fixes at best) but if you go this route get some Loctite "BLUE" thread locker (it is removable) to help keep the insert and bolt from backing out also the "GREEN" Loctite will help fill in some low spots in the stripped threads where you are putting the helicoil and help hold it in place then BLUE on the actual bolt threads and a "lock" split washer just don't over torque the bolt when tightening,Jeff.

2 pointsSo here are the results of my two coats of Monstaliner installation. Not sure why these all load sideways. Not sure why the finished product has a sand texture to it. It is supposed to be more of an orange peel texture that you can make rougher with additional rolling. I'll have to give them a call on Tuesday to see why it turned out this way. At least it will be more slip resistant

2 pointsHome Made rock rake for slot hitch. A Wallfish creation with some of my mods added. Quite beefy driveway maintainer. $100 SOLD!!!

2 pointsYou are right.....not a trailer Queen at all....Looks ore like the machine that puills the trailer,,,with the Queen on it...her quart....tyhe King and all the Kings men.......you got this covered big time...!!!!!!!! Thank-you for sharing picks of your Clydesdale !!!!!
-
2 pointsThat would make everything disappear and make it look like the headlights are just floating in there .
-
2 pointsYes that's on the list of things to do. Electrical, belts, tires, seat etc etc. Couldn't stand it, had to see what it looked like in its True color .... I LIKE
-
2 pointsYou could also use any Kohler from six to twelve horse power and lots of folks are going to the Harbor Freight "Predator" engines as a more affordable choice. Lots of threads on here about installing them.

Daddy WH: "I don't care what they say - Unless they come from Pond Stock - I'll have none of it! Daughter WH: "Oh Daddy! You're such an old tractor!" Daddy WH: "Why yes, thank you...Old and best..."

2 pointsIt looks like they flipped the front axle, spindles and all, upside down. A super low rider.
-
2 pointsStep one. Remove tie-downs, clean floor with acetone, sand and apply sealer. Here's a pic with the trailer floor sanded and half the ramp done. And here's a shot with sealer.

1 pointDefinitely the first thing to do. Don't rewire the house when it's just a burnt out light bulb. If that's good make sure the ground is good and then, following the diagram, test it one step at a time. With the key in the run position power at the switch, the load side of the fuse, the terminal strip etc. until you find where the power is lost.
-
1 pointThanks for the quick help. I would like to see if my mower works but a hanging rod is broken on the mower carrier. It will seem more nimble to have the mower underbelly anyways. Am I missing something as to why this is preferentially used out front with the carrier? Below a quick picture. Some scattered areas of rust on the body and wheels. Starts after 5 seconds and sounds good. I took off the 6 back weights already for the summer. It almost did a wheelie when I put it into 6th gear the first time I test drove it.

1 pointIm going to bring it back to normal Height. It looks cool lower. But I will use it for pulling a little Garden trailer. I just don't know what motor to put in that will fit. The Briggs & Stratton they put on the Hood won't close. Thank u for the welcome.
-
1 pointThat's great news Richard. I'm also glad to hear that you'll still make the show.
