8 pointsHi guys! I just thought I'd share with everyone the hub puller I made. I tried different store bought pullers and none of them worked. Since I work in a fab shop I decided to make my own. I had 2 pieces of half inch plate burned out to 5.75" and welded them together, I then used a transfer punch and the hole pattern on a rear rim for my hole layout. I drilled the holes out big enough for the 7/16-20 bolts to go through. I drilled and tapped a 3/4-10 hole in the center, used allthread with a nut welded to one end and threaded it through. I bolted the puller to the hub with all 5 bolts and used my impact gun to drive the allthread through. It took a little bit but the hub broke free and came off with no damage what-so-ever. I also had a 3 bolt hub on the other axle and that came off even easier. The puller is real easy to make if you have the tools. Here is a picture. The pipe wrench was used to keep the axle still.

6 pointsHow I became a lover of the Horses is a mixture of fluke, mishap, luck, and providence. Not quite a year ago, my wife, our one year old son, and I bought a home and moved to a predominantly white small river town named Utica, in Indiana. I was depressed because after the previous five years of school, medical problems, and eventually graduating with honors and a bachelor's degree, I could not find work. With no interviews, no answers to my sent resume and applications, I found myself wondering what I would do. I am a minister, which means I did a lot of praying about what my next move was to be. I was lead to go out and look for someone in a less fortunate situation than myself, and to then ask them how I might serve them. I began mowing the lawns for our elderly, disabled, and disadvantaged NEIGHBORS, with a 12 hp Cub Cadet, the previous home owner had left. I used that little riding mower to drag away fallen trees, logs left by the risen Ohio River, and anything else my NEIGHBORS needed removed. One day an elderly NEIGHBOR who ran the local small engines repair shop exclaimed to me, "Manny, do you realize you're tearing up that riding mower dragging those trees and logs? What you need is a tractor!" I asked him if he had any in his garage, and informed he did not. BUT...Mr Snelling added, "you know, I think ole Jimmy Van Gilder has a tractor he's thinking of selling!" I should pause here to say, Mr James "Jimmy" Van Gilber was something of a local hero. A veteran, retired fire fighter, and long time member of the town of Utica, Mr Van Gilder helped many of the town's disadvantaged in ways they could never repay him. When I went to Mr Van Gilder to inquire as to the availability of his tractor, he was in the final stages of terminal cancer, so I did NOT want to trouble him. I asked Mr Van Gilder if had a tractor he wanted to sell, and explained what I needed a tractor for. He wanted only $250 for his 520H. I get $200 in SSI each month, but that was weeks away, so I turned to Facebook to raise the money. I offered myself labor for $10 per hour, to raise money for my community outreach project, which would later become the LOVE THY NEIGHBOR INITIATIVE. Within an hour of posting mt plea, a friend who owned a business asked if he and his wife could come see the tractor. That Friday they came to check out the item in question. Within minutes, he pulled out his wallet and paid for the tractor! With my mouth wide open in disbelief, "Matt" exclaimed, "Manny" we think what you're doing is a good thing, and we want to support it by purchasing, and donating this tractor to your cause!" I set about getting the tractor ready for operations, which lead me to look for service parts on the internet. That's when I found out some of the history of the wonder which is the heart and spirit of what was once, "America, the great". The more I learned, the more intrigued I became! That was July of last year. Today, I have nine Horses, and hope to travel to Minnesota this weekend to pick up number 10. I love, and enjoy the sense of community, and next door neighbor quality which is the Wheel Horse family. From day one I was accepted. I am not a black man with a questionable past in the Wheel Horse community. I am Manny to some, RJ, to a few, and Chaplain Manny to the rest. My questions are answered in full with patience from skilled - knowledgeable WH gurus, to newbies like myself how've learned a few things. I love saving Horses, and giving them a second chance to do what they love doing, working hard and making the shinie, new, poorly manufactured, tractors look bad. I hope one day to be able to share the knowledge I've gained from the Wheel Horse community with the next generation of Wheel Horse lovers, namely my two year old son. Thank you Wheel Horse community for making me a part! Your servant, Chaplain, R. J. "Manny" Higgins Utica, Indiana Police Department

6 pointsI would like some opinions about this possible purchase. The tractor is supposed to be a 1978,the guy that is selling it said he did'nt run it in about 5 years. He said he has turned the engine and it is not tight. He also said the fluids in the radiator are up to level.Steering is good and steers easy. It was stored inside but has been outside for 3 years now.The D250 comes with tiller, snowblower and large shaft driven mower. He said the tractor ran well and had no transmission or clutch problems. The owner said that it should'nt take that much to get it working again.I think I could get it for 1300.00,the problem is it's 400 miles one way from my place.Any ideas and opinions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance

6 pointsIf you used fine thread for the center screw you would develop more pulling power. Also if you used longer bolts for the hub, you can use nuts on the back side of the hub to spread the load more. Nice puller though!

5 pointsBeautiful weather here in central North Carolina today. Not a cloud in the sky and in the 60s. Graded one garden plot, and tilled them all. Also built one compost bin.

5 pointsA little more progress on the RJ rebuild. My rear hitch is all cleaned, primed and painted Rustoleum Regal Red. A big thanks to Jake Kuhn for selling me this one ! I bought before I realized that one of the other 4 transmissions Steve has had a rear hitch on it ! Also thanks to Craig (AMC Rules) for posting the information about the NAPA throttle cable that they sell for $15.99 (Part No 703906) that lines up perfectly for the holes on the RJ Hood used by the original throttle cable handle base. Mine was very badly rusted and pitted so I did need to find a replacement. The Kohler K 91 motor is almost ready to use. I have a new Kohler cup and screen to go under a Kohler recoil that I have for this 4 HP motor. This motor was the original motor on another RJ I bought two years ago. I had it removed to repair a wire that had been chewed on by mice as they established a major housing complex under the tin of the Kohler while sitting in a barn. If you have never had to removed one of those mice messes you just have not lived. Sunday afternoon I started more work on the RJ frame. My clutch pedal was rusted up on the 3/4 inch foot pedal rod. Also some previous owner had installed three steel spacers that moved the clutch rod further out from the frames. The pedal and spacers were all heavily rusted so I started applying PB Blaster every half hour or so. I did this for four hours. Finally a couple hammer taps started to move the clutch pedal. I then used my pry bar with a flat head surface to knock the clutch pedal off making sure to do so around the closest points on the clutch near the 3/4 inch round foot pedal bar. Off came the clutch and I cleaned rust with a Dremel (sand paper head) and then started work on removing the three spacers. 2 photos of the frame and foot pedal show rust after I removed with Dremel and wire brush. I did buy three brass 3/4 inch washers ( I wanted stainless steel but the local hardware store only had 3/4 stainless washers that were large like for auto application) on the foot pedal to allow the lift handle to set away from the frame about a 1/4 inch but still be able to lock on the hoodstand lift tab. Going to start focusing on the motor work remaining and my wheels and front tires and then my RJ hood redo for now. I also did get the underside of my RJ fenders painted with Regal Red today too!

5 pointsI think I need to get pics of really how bad the problem is. Plus, anything to replace that image of Tiny Tim in my mind. . .

4 pointsThe most important consideration when buying a tiller attachment is the condition of the tines. The completeness of the package as mentioned is important as well.Tines that come to a point are worn out. They stir up the soil but really won't work the way they were designed to function. They are also a good indication of total run time on the unit. New tines are way to pricey to even consider.JAinVA

4 pointsI know sometimes you can catch lightning in a bottle, but it always worries me when someone says something was "running when I parked it" or something along those lines. If it was stored inside, but not in the past three years (?), they obviously lost space indoors and this one was cast off. Check the underside as it looks as if it is in high grass and that rots out frames. Gas is cheap these days, it's probably worth a look. If you are there and have cash and can take it immediately, he may consider negotiating the price lower. I'd personally be a bit hesitant to pay $1300 for a non-runner, even with all the extras. Lastly, you can always sell one or more of the accessories that you don't plan to use to recoup some of your investment. Depends on what YOU want to use it for. Best of luck!

4 pointsto reduce friction, try taping a 3/8 or 1/2" (or larger) ball bearing to the approx. center of the axle before mounting the hub puller. The 3/4 center bolt will contact only the face of this ball bearing instead of the full face of the axle shaft....thereby reducing the friction / resistance .... Just a thought.

4 pointsWelcome to Red Square !st...there is no such thing as an 857 that will not start. Like Paul said...that is a starter/generator. Being a backyard mechanic...I would put everything back like it was...jump it and see if it starts. If it does...change things one at a time. It could be a bad plug (for instance)...it happens. The starter/generator has 2 circuits running to the regulator. One is the starter and powers when you turn the key...the other is the generator and charges the battery while running.

4 points50 F here at the moment...but it is not going to stay this way. I just got back from a fill the gas can run, and I tacked on a Rock & Rye stop. Horses are feed and ready to play...and I will be ready also. Heck, I am already ready....I still have my blade on!! Show me all the flowers you want before March even gets here...I have a golf club that will take care of all that. Cinderella kid, out of no where...he's got about 200 yards to the green...I think he's got a 7 iron. Whoa...he got all o dat one!! It's in the cup!!!

4 points@IthacaJeff A picture of @stevasaurus with a ukulele and wooden shoes hovering over a 3 piece transmission could replace that other picture in your head.

4 pointsEven the ugly ones get to go to the dance once in awhile. If my second wife had not looked at me as a FIXER-UPPER ? Who knows what I'd be. By the way? I also came with some extra parts on my rear. But, I came with "2" beerholders.

4 pointsHave you guys have your meds. this morning. Seriously, I have the same problem. For years I rake the gravel off the lawn and when the ditch dries enough, I go down in the ditch with boots and shovel it into my trailer or wheel barrow and use it where ever necessary. Brother I know it keeps me young.

4 pointsWhen the average daily temp reaches 70F the creatures show up. The creatures will move indoors when it gets cooler. Keep in mind they only eat healthy organic veggies. It won't kale you!
-
4 pointsNice Mike. Two things I miss after retiring.....my coworkers and access to a well equipped fab and machine shop.
-
4 pointsI know the feeling, been there done that. Slow, rake and shovel. Some might think, add earth and grasses? Any pic's? The gravel would make great drainage although might attract unknown creatures?.
-
4 pointsYeah baby. Use two of the herd today. One to grade and one to till. The only reason to Garden is to get seat time

3 pointsI like the way the coating looks on the steering wheel. 8 inch wheels are nice. We need to start calling you Danger Man with that bow saw. My Dad almost lost his ankle using one. I think after he healed from the cut , he carried the box saw to the scrap yard and watch them crush it.

3 pointsWelcome to Red Square! Tillers are around. Keep your eyes pealed on RS classifieds and CL. Expect to pay $300-350 depending on your area. Make sure the tiller comes with the rear tach o matic, rockshaft and cable assembly and front pulley assembly (and a helper spring if you are not using a hydro). If these do not come with it, it will not work and you could be looking at an additional $100-$125 to get all these parts. Make sure the tines are not worn. Worn tines look like sharks teeth and you will not be able to till as deep into the earth. The tiller will work, just not as efficiently. Finally, tillers work best with a manual transmission. With a hydro, the tiller will overcome the hydro and push the tractor-just so you are not surprised.

3 pointsWhen I find the pic. I'll show you a deer licking clean my bird feeder platform mounted to a tree.

3 pointsi am pretty sure your 857 came with a starter generator unit. it is the big cylindrical unit between the engine and the gas tank. You can download the manual for her herehttp://www.wheelhorseforum.com/files/file/583-tractor-1967-857-da-om-ipl-wiring-snpdf/ If it is a Starter generator jump from the battery positive to the Terminal on the generator housing with A stamped next to it. (it should have a heavy wire attached to it). if it starts to spin the engine then the problem is most likely in your switch or wiring to and from it.

3 pointsPics will definitely help. You might want to ask your town's road crew to stop by and take a look, see if they have any ideas.
-
3 pointsI'll try to add some pics here. Not a lot because I was trying to look, take pictures, keep up with the group and not get run over. I had a great time but still didnt get to see it all. Finally found my wife after we all got separated right before we left. I grabbed an ice cream cone and mike and I jumped on a tram in the tractor parade to ride around and look for my wife( and rest). Looking forward to next year and I hope to have the two seater done.

3 pointsMy take apart was having the cluster gear upside down..... very easy to mistake to make! If it goes in easier than what Steve described it might in backwards!
