Yup rokon guessed right... electric chute rotation. Neighbor saw me out blowing at 7:00 pm last night. Got about half done and took a break to give me and the blower a break. Turns out the neighbors walk behind bit the dust when he tried starting it. His driveway is twice mine and all he had was a shovel. He asked me about doing his next and I said sure as long as she stays together. Two tanks of gas later and we where done at 11:00 pm. No parts flew off. Thank god. Really was hard on it though. It was over 4 foot in his driveway thanks to a retaining wall. Had to hit it first with the blower in the air and then drop it for a second swype. Just kept on chewing away at it. When I was done , he said, thats a pretty impressive machine. I said yup, dont make them like they used to. These photos where from today clearing the dog a poop area and trying to get the horse stables to wake the sleeping gt14 with the snowplow to finish the driveways.

We pulled the 502 out of storage this weekend, after quite a few pulls to prime the fuel pump and carb we ended up with a good weekend of fun. My little brother in law and my girls had a blast in the yard and in the corn field behind the house!

After getting through one of the worst snowstorms for this area (amazing that this area shutdown the other day with 7/10" of snow!) with 35.2" by me, I started to put together a wish list for being prepared next time. I managed to get by with my plow-equipped 518xi and my Ariens 924DLE (24" with 9 hp TECHY) as the 523Dxi didn't get prepared because of someone's procrastination! I have cleared two neighbors and my driveway, so far. At least one more, but possibly two more at the end of the block, once I can access them. It comes out to about 1,600 feet of driveway in length. Items in red are needed. Ideally what I should have is: 523Dxi with cab and 79366 Two-Stage Snowblower 520xi with cab and 79365 Single-Stage Snowthrower 518xi with 79355 48" Snow/Dozer Blade C-105 with 06-42BC02 42" Snow/Dozer Blade Walk-Behind Tractor with Snow/Dozer Blade 24" Walk-Behind Snowblower with cab 24" Walk-Behind Snowblower (without a cab for tight areas) Generator in case of power outage Then I look across at my neighbor behind me. They have a brand new little MTD snowthrower - and kids! Their driveway is cleared as well. This is also an area where we didn't have snow two out of the seven winters we have been here! I could hire a contractor - or move somewhere warm too!!!

No issue matching up a belt today. Blew home from work and got it installed. All looked good so I gave it hell! Tie Rod rig job held up. Having a celebratory beer tonight rather than a forget about the day one! That's my beast! And glad to have back.

So its been awhile for me to make a formal post. Been taking on more at work and just been so busy but i still check in from time to time. I have been thinking of ways to add electric chute rotation to the blower. Seen it all been done before but not much on the tall chute blowers. So I hope this isnt boring. I wanted three things, -relability( no need to make a simple design turn into a failure , specially when your out blowing snow) -symplicity -little to no modification to the blower itself Came across a surplus supply of gmc electric seat motors on Amazon for $15.00. Read reviews. Motor is reversable, can be taken apart to switch output shaft orientation (also meant machining of the shaft possible), and had a nice 1/4" hole mounting fixture. Figured if it lifts someones fat rump then it should be up to the task of spinning my chute. So i ordered it.... Again I didnt want to damage any orignal parts so I went to my local fabricator shop and picked up some 3/8 cold rolled steel. Which is the same thing wheel horse used for the shaft the worm is on. So now I must adapt this wierd non standard worm thread shaft from the seat motor to the 3/8 rod used for the worm drive on the blower. This envovled a good friend of mine and his lathe. Took a 3" by 1" round stock stainless and but it in his 3 jaw chuck. First drilled the 3/8 hole all the way threw. Left the piece in the chuck to hold center and drilled, I believe it was, 29/64 for the seat motor shaft to a depth of 1.5 inches. So now we have an adapter with the 3/8 hole 1.5 inch depth and a 29/64 hole with a 1.5 inch depth. Added a set screw for either side and that piece was done. Now we put the seat motor shaft in the chuck and turned it to fit the hole with a slip fit of about .002 of an inch plus or minus. The joke was , we are not building a rocket ship to get to the moon but if any garden tractor could , it would be a wheel horse.... Wah WAh Took my new fancy parts home with me to finish the rest. After careful measuring I cut the 3/8 stock down to size and drilled a hole for the role pin that holds the worm to the shaft. Next I cut my seat motor shaft down to size and ground a flat on the shaft for a firm place for the set screw to grab. Remember this is a threaded shaft not smooth. Shown in pictures below. My seat motor required disasemble anyway to swap the shaft to come out the other side for chute clearance. The motor is offset from the gearbox and it caused the motor to hit the chute when chute was rotated hard right. I assembled everything and all was left was to drill a 1/4" hole for mounting. Measured where I wanted the hole , drilled hole and used 1/4" threaded rod for a fasener and a few bolts.. I think it turned out great. I added a rubber cover out of rubber roofing to protect it from the weather. It has plenty of speed lock to lock on the blower. Should be reliable. Best part of all is it can be returned to a crank in minutes incase of failure and nothing original was damage to the blower itself but a 1/4" hole! Something yet to be determined are some kind of stops so to not tear up anything incase the motor gets stuck in drive or someone else uses it and doesnt realize. I will add pictures of the setup and video if I can to show speed of the chute. Also if anyway wants measurements, amp draw of motor, or any question feel free to ask. Might even make some more adapters if anyone is interested. Next post I will show will be how i wired everything. Hope you enjoy! https://youtu.be/3Zsim1ihip0 https://youtu.be/9sUim0PQlOo

Well the work on the hood has been slow... I'm just about to embark on the block sanding to straighten it all out. Big thanks goes out to a RS member with an original fiberglass hood, I was supplied with pics so I have been able to tailor this hood to the original specs... as always the actual build process will be released in stages on my YouTube Channel. Thank you for watching if you do so, much appreciated!

Not done yet, but I was able to go for a test drive. Spent the first 30 min running around at idle to 1/2 throttle. A good break in avoids a break down. Did an oil change. Drove another 30 min at idle to 1/2 throttle, just itching to open it up. The time had finally arrived so rolling a long in 3rd just above idle I grabbed a hand full of throttle... Needless to say I was quite surprised when the front end ripped off the ground & I was looking at sky. Quite happy with the power I'm getting out of my engine, but I think I will add fluid to the front tires so this does not happen so easy. I'm also going to drop the front end about 3" hopefully this will help as well.

We seem to have been right on the line where the storm was turning from rain to snow. Wednesday we had a few inches of light fluffy snow, plowed it Thursday right down to the pavement. Friday was a whole different story, it went from rain to snow back and forth all day, about 4 PM it seemed to have stopped so I plowed the slush away and hoped for the best. Friday evening the "Wintry Mix" resumed as the temperature plummeted. Saturday I had an inch of ice all the way down our steep curvy driveway, then the snow resumed. Plowing snow became a real thrill ride at that point, as I went down the steep portions with chains on in first gear and the right wheel skidded while the left freewheeled. Next pass I decided to try third gear, no skidding this time but it was going so fast that the snow plow was doing the steering, first gear only from then on! We couldn't go anyplace Saturday or Sunday but we are all thawed out now. I don't mind snow, but the ice is the pits.

First of all thank you Ken B for this unstoppable machine. Its been quite a few years and every time I sit on this thing I love it more and more. Having an extremely steep driveway one has to see it to believe it. Doesn't matter if I am going fast, slow, forward, reverse, even with a full plow of wet snow. Its absolutely unstoppable. The plow guys stop on the street all the time to watch me and just shake their heads in disbelief. And thank you David Luzier for rebuilding the Sundstrand for me. Absolutely first rate class work. An already incredible machine has now become even better. Totally reliable and predictable. Bone dry with no leaks. It will go up a three foot high pile of snow until I am nearly vertical.

Installed the snow blade we picked up from Squonk yesterday. Had a chance to get some snow on it and then ran out of gas. We didn't have any non-ethanol gas ready to go in a can so we had to push her back into the barn. It was fun for a short time. We didn't get the storm so luckily we didn't need to push any snow. We'll clean it up and paint it in the spring.

OK, Had a nice surprise. left the tranny in the truck...ready to go to a friends heated garage and decided to turn it around to face the sun for a few hours.......GOT WARM Enough to FREE THE TRANNY UP. The only liquid in the tranny was H2O, so, after draining ...filled half full with wd40. I figured that would loosen any leftover goo and rust. I spun the input and it got better and better, now it is pretty smooth and goes into the gears nicely. I GUESS I WAS VERY LUCKY!! I will keep turning it and slushing it around for a couple days then re drain it. I am planning on filling with 90weight gear lube....sound correct? ALSO is the 1/8 " pt plug on the side of the case a level indictor so you do not overfill??? As you can see its almost all apart......One nice thing is almost every piece is small enough to go into my friends blast cabinet!!! Makes for easy prep!!! On My way!!

I had to paint a few things for my wife in the basement and didn't want overspray on Emory's suburban. Looked around for something to cover it with. Put it to bed pretty snug don't you think. Just don't tell the wife where I got that snazzy cover! Think I'll keep it

Glenn, your right about the love. I think it's therapeutic for me. I don't know about calendar material though. My wife asked me last night if I could buy a new one for the money I have spent on this one. I said no way they don't make them any more and furthermore do you have any idea what a psychiatrist would charge by the hour? Times that by the hundreds of hours I have in this little horse!

been real busy this week we had to bury my mother-in-law Tuesday and had all the funeral prep since last week, so when they started calling for this big storm i didn't have much time to get ready till Wednesday. had blowers, plows and cabs on but everything needed some fine tuning. the cab i bought for the 520 with 2 stage blower needed a windshield and a right side door, they have been ordered but not soon enough to get here yet. so i found some Plexiglas and cut it to fit for the windshield and fastened an old cab door i had for the left side, can't open it, but it keep the snow and wind out. had to put the chains on it last night after the snow started and had to make a rod up with a pair of small vise grips to turn the shoot. went out about 10 am and must of had close to 24" already by then. had to run the mtd walk behind blower just to get out to the shed. got the 520 out with the 2 stage on ad did 2 neighbors drives and mine. i was out about 3 hrs and must have had about 4" additional till i came back in. and let me tell you especially Jersey glen those cabs are GREAT, wish i had gotten one sooner. nobody else ventured out so i didn't get any action pictures but here are some pictures off the cabs last night before the sh*t hit the fan

Interesting thoughts John. Having a disability, albeit only temporary, I found myself creating a list of wants myself. I helplessly sat by and watched my neighbor plow my driveway with his humongous pickup truck and blade, while my wife shoveled the walks. Though I am not complaining, I expect that I will be doing a lot of lawn reconstruction after I am able to move about a little better. So I begin my list of wishes. A snow plow for the front of my Tacoma; An electric start walk-behind snow blower that doesn't clog every 5 minutes; A snow blower and cab for the 416-H; And though we didn't lose electric this time, I still want a 22KW whole house generator.

I learned about an additional method to clear snow when I moved to this part of Maryland. For two winters, my MAIN means of removing snow - was my leaf blower!

After getting sick last winter and not having anything ready without help, I had every thing ready by Halloween this year and we just keep getting these "dustings" I have had the Stihl Yard Boss with the Power Sweep head out to clean the walk a few times but that's it

Snow? I had 'bout 30" for the grandsons. They love the Horse "play" and the white, wet, cold, junque. I once had a neighbor say he didn't want to get involved but, "Your sons drive your Wheel Horses all over when you're not home." So?

Had the C-225 our for some plowing, started right up at 10 deg. F and ran smooth. Wanted to plow without chains and the new tires worked great. That's 200# of weight on the back.

When the first snow that needs to be removed doesn't happen until January 23 and the season is over in another 60 days, one gets lulled into planning on the mowing season! The trouble is, with my ideal "crew" I need a "magic shed" like you have. Yes, it has been good PT using the walk-behind. Daily walks with the dog, and using Bee Hinds are great to keep it from tightening up. Actually I found the rocker pedal on the 5xi in the cold was a bit uncomfortable going in reverse.

We are near Gaithersburg with 35.2". That is the most snow in one storm that I have ever seen - and there were a few blizzards in my lifetime in Chicago! All I can say is after 24" it doesn't make much difference! It is 38 degrees today though. Still no cavalry from the county yet! I clear in front of the mailboxes to lessen the EOD left by the county.

I think an 8 speed manual lift plow or blower would work fine on a straight long run of 12" of snow. But I could not imagine working through the 5-6' drifts like I did yesterday without the foot control hydro and lift. It was power into the drift till the tall chute was almost under, raise the blower, hook the drift with the top extension and back up knocking the drift down. Lower the blower while backing out and repeat. This was repeated hundreds of times all day and the 28 year old 520H and the 72 year old operator were not even breathing hard.

About once every 56 years most likely. Nice collection! I love checking out the old hit n miss engines at the local shows. Do you run any equipment with them or just the engines alone? As for that trans, I'd flush it with diesel or kerosene before you load it with gear lube to remove any of the WD 40. Most guys remove the gear shifter to poor in the liquids. I'd bolt it down and hook an engine or electric motor to the input pulley and spin it through the gears with kerosene in it, to make sure the inside cleans up well.

After good prep work there's only two things you can do wrong with applying and sanding the filler (Bondo), leaving it too low and leaving it too high. Yeah, I know, not all that helpful, but if you overfill you sand down and if you under fill you add more and expect to do both, more than once. Best to overfill a bit and carefully sand down by crisscrossing the contours. There's NOTHING flat on that Round hood, some areas might be straight but nothing is flat so your sanding strokes should be very varied with all the crowns. I was very fond of a hi-build sprayable polyester filler (Feather-Fill) for overcoating the finished filler but there's also some finish coat fillers that are applied like the regular filler but go on smoother and sand easier with the finer than 80 grit papers. Finding all the flaws now is a lot easier than waiting for the glossy red to find them! Holler if I was unclear or if you have more questions.

The taller chute definitely works better in the deep stuff.

I had another day of shop time so I blasted the hood again and pecked at the dents some more and started applying Bondo to the rust pits and the dent repairs. The areas that I have sanded are looking pretty good so far. I have only used Bondo one other time in my life and that was 30 years ago and the.outcome was not good. Lol. I learned to apply a little, sand then apply more if needed. This is going to be a very time.consuming process for me. Here is where I'm at after about 3 hours of Bondo and sanding. Any advice.will be greatly appreciated. All the pits are filled in on the underside as well.

what kind of car hood are you using. my uncles use to use a car hood from the 50's with the big round front and used for a sled till they got tired of pulling it back up the hill eric j

C'mon now, you lost me there... same tractor works fine for your buddy, but not "fast" enough for you? No way plowing snow with a gear drive trans is gonna be faster than a with a hydraulic trans... the time delay alone, coming to a complete stop just to change gears...let alone cutting in around any obstructions.

Finally used the 518xi for cleanup today. Worked it a little harder than I should without the chains on. Still managed though. Snow total was 32.5 inches for my area! The county still has to do their part though. Hopefully within three days!

I picked up this 753 which had all the goodies on it! It ran ok. the 2 piece tank of course leaked pretty bad and so did the hy-2 hydraulics. It was in good shape besides the hood was mangled. The day I picked it up 1st thing I did was yank the tank off and replace 2 piece tank seal with Ron Greco reproduction seal and got it to seal 1st time around thank god 2 piece tank is a good and bad idea good cause they are aluminum and don't rust bad cause its a leak point! This is after the 1st stage of buffing This after I polished the original paint with a buffer it came out to nice to fully tear it apart so I left it !

Yes indeed! I just used mine a few days ago but made the mistake of letting my Labrador out ahead of me. White footprints everywhere! Just like someone driving down the drive in fresh snow before I get a chance to blade or blow it, really messes things up.

If considering a purchase, price. I have never turned away a Horse, too many hours. Paid a little, tiny, almost nothin' for my '90 520-8. Hour meter, not working, stopped at 2500 hrs. I couldn't care less what an hour meter reads. Most don't work, I don't care either. Once in my barn PM (preventative maintenance) takes over. A few of my grandsons rides posing after a bit of exercise.
