Just wanted to share pictures of my son's 60 suburban plowing snow. Slower going than the neighbors' Deeres, but tons more fun! Lots of funny looks from traffic going by - not many wheel horses down here! Sorry for purists, put a predator on it so my son can ride it in parades and shows (fun for papa to play with too!). Got this one back in 2013 from Eric in Pa (doynger69) and have been working on it.

Well, the 520 was trying to kick the door down, so I got it opened for him. OK, how do we attack that ?? WOT, and hang on. And 15 minutes later....We done.

been real busy this week we had to bury my mother-in-law Tuesday and had all the funeral prep since last week, so when they started calling for this big storm i didn't have much time to get ready till Wednesday. had blowers, plows and cabs on but everything needed some fine tuning. the cab i bought for the 520 with 2 stage blower needed a windshield and a right side door, they have been ordered but not soon enough to get here yet. so i found some Plexiglas and cut it to fit for the windshield and fastened an old cab door i had for the left side, can't open it, but it keep the snow and wind out. had to put the chains on it last night after the snow started and had to make a rod up with a pair of small vise grips to turn the shoot. went out about 10 am and must of had close to 24" already by then. had to run the mtd walk behind blower just to get out to the shed. got the 520 out with the 2 stage on ad did 2 neighbors drives and mine. i was out about 3 hrs and must have had about 4" additional till i came back in. and let me tell you especially Jersey glen those cabs are GREAT, wish i had gotten one sooner. nobody else ventured out so i didn't get any action pictures but here are some pictures off the cabs last night before the sh*t hit the fan

Snow picked up again and we waited until about 8:30 and hit it hard again. Don't have much of a driveway, but live at tne end of a dead end street. If we didn't plow it, public works would get it - probably a day later. 520H, 42 inch blade and Matt's foot control kit. We'll hit it again in the morning. Bill

After a mild winter so far this year, I came close to blowing it. And it looks like I will be "walking" this time for this storm. The 523Dxi decided to have an intermittent problem with the glow plugs so it is to the rear of the lineup. Luckily I sprung last year and got a cab for the Ariens walk-behind. It should be handy with the winds that are predicted. In the meantime, planning on hunkering down until ...? But someone else is ready for fun!

First of all thank you Ken B for this unstoppable machine. Its been quite a few years and every time I sit on this thing I love it more and more. Having an extremely steep driveway one has to see it to believe it. Doesn't matter if I am going fast, slow, forward, reverse, even with a full plow of wet snow. Its absolutely unstoppable. The plow guys stop on the street all the time to watch me and just shake their heads in disbelief. And thank you David Luzier for rebuilding the Sundstrand for me. Absolutely first rate class work. An already incredible machine has now become even better. Totally reliable and predictable. Bone dry with no leaks. It will go up a three foot high pile of snow until I am nearly vertical.

A bit of a sacrilege but it was a bit too much for the 518xi to plow so the Ariens got the call this morning. The auger housing is 24" high and the snow was as deep - without drifts. In the lowest forward gear I would still have to stop and let the auger catch up! Since then we have gotten at least another 3", and it is forecast to continue for another 5 hours! Unfortunately we don't get enough snow of this volume to justify a two-stage blower for the 5xi, And Juno has been in her glory!

Thanks a neighbor with a big green tractor came over and dug off the 18" that snow plows had thrown at the bottom of the driveway. Don't care for the green tractors, but he did say Emory's tractor will still be going strong long after his Deere dies! Pretty tough for a 56 year old machine! I plowed our drive and the elderly ladies next door that the Deere didn't do. Might have scratched her sealed asphalt a little - hope not. She was trying to shovel out and I felt bad for her 86yrs old. Son was dying to go out, but is sick with a double ear infection. His legs won't quite hit the pedals yet - but he's getting closer - turns 8 in March!

I have a six to eight inches here at the house .Forecasters say we will get snow until sometime tomorrow afternoon. If I can stand the cold I will put chains on the and plow out an area for the dog. He went out after supper came in with a frozen wiener.

Well , I have been watching for the last few years......just waiting for a RJ too come along, in my area....cheap enough. Well, its actually a 1960 Suburban 400......( so I believe)....so close enough. Its gonna need some work, But basically the engine needs a couple small items, but has spark and a decent looking bore so I think that will be easy. Luckily I have friends that like to work on tractors !!.The tractor itself is not too bad...wrong front wheels, wrong seat, no fuel tank, but overall pretty decent sheet metal, and most big stuff is there....I think! My big issue at this time is the tranny, seams stuck tight! Was told it was free a couple weeks ago, so took a chance on it. I am thinking that maybe the shafts are just stuck in the bushings and hopefully there is no other damage (broken gears or broken shafts etc.) Can any folks chime in as too likely problems.......... are these tranny's known for "locking up"................... .maybe its an easy fix???? Hoping!! THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

My '89 520 Hydro didn't even blink when it saw this 7' drift about 2 hours ago. Yours definitely has a problem. Check keys in the hubs and the hydro pump pulley.

Some more pictures of my project , body is coming together , and yes I put the tie rods on the wrong side of the steering arm , just got in a hurry but they have to come off to be painted later anyway

Actually I was able to undercut it to the chute, then raise the blower and knock it down with the wing extension. The hydro raises the blower pretty high, putting the top corner of the wing close to 3' high. There was a lot of F/R to work thru it. Really thankful for the hydro foot control.

Richmond Report : At 1:00 PM went and shoveled path for short leg pooch , did not want a repeat of frozen wiener problem . Measured snow in 3 places in backyard , had seven inches. Since we had sleet most of last night , not sure how much snow really fell. Went back out at 4:50 PM to re shovel path for the pooch. Measured the yard again in 3 places , we now have 11 inches on the ground and it is still coming down. I am not sure I will be able to get into shed tomorrow to put chains on . One good thing about the Blizzard of 2016 around late spring , early fall lot of sales on walk behind blowers only used once .

Hey Folks, been a while since I've been on RS but snow threads are among my favorites. Here in Northern VA just west of DC we have about 18" I'd guess. At this point it has stopped, I think, since it is drifting and blowing. At the hardware sore where I work it has been craaaaazy. All day Tuesday all I did was restock ice melt and shovels. Wed was my day off and I got the chains on. I didn't get to put the blower on then. I get off work 4 on Thursday and figured I would do it then, but was asked to go to the supermarket. Supermarket was not that crazy Thursday night, surprisingly. Absolute mahem at the store Thursday and Friday. Thursday we had three deliveries of ice melt and sleds and sold them all. Friday had a big order from the Ace warehouse and sold all of the sleds and most of the ice melt. Sold lots of flashlights, batteries, etc etc. Yesterday morning put the blower on before going to work. Found one of the front tires flat. Could not find the air chuck for the compressor... my 3 year old niece apparently had been playing with it. SO went got a new one and got her aired up. Everything ready but putting the belt on. Last night, after my room mate left for work, gave it a go on the 4" or so accumulated and all OK. Room mate had to work so I helped clear enough of the driveway so she could get to the street and went back to sleep (luckily the plows stopped coming down that street at some point and the build up in front of the driveway was not very big and also was not salty/icey rock hard). Luckily I am not scheduled to work this weekend. Having my coffee now and will head out. This is the first tie I have used the blower since moving here from OH. My car is parked on the street so I hope and pray that the snow pushed up next to it is still not salty/icey and I can move it with the blower. The driveway wont take more than 20 minutes (baring problems) and then I will venture into the street and see what I can do. Not sure if more is expected, will check on that when I come back in to warm up. Happy Snow Day folks, be safe.

I've been asked several questions about the weights on my C-85, so I'll attempt to answer them. I wanted more traction, so I built the weight box for the back. As a result of that, the front end was light and I added front wheel weights, which helped, but I felt that it could still use some more weight, so I built a front weight carrier. I made the front weight carrier to just clip into the front tach -a - matic, so it can be put on or taken off w/o tools very quickly. It never steered that great in the snow, so I also changed to the Carlisle Sno Hog tires and this steers better than it ever has. I can't remember how much weight this ended up being but I think it's around 75 pounds. This is the weight carrier - Thanks for the questions! C-85

I gotta sit tight until this wind subsides - no sooner get a path blown and the wind fills it right back in . did outside the garage earlier to knock a drift down that was working on blocking the tractors in .
  49. 4 points
The wind is blowing like all get out. Not sure how much is on the ground , can not tell how much snow is falling because it blowing side ways most of the time. When I put my snow suit on I am going to measure. Chains are not going on the tractor today, it is sitting in an unheated shed . Momma did not raise but one dummy and that's my younger brother.

Lots of times the transmissions have had bad boots on the shift lever and get a lot of water in them. If it has been setting in an unheated area that would explain the transmission being FROZEN, very literally. Let it thaw out, drain it and flush it out with some diesel, be sure to jack up the front end while draining it.
