Collecting firewood in style.

Okay guys and gals. I am back home, all settled in and doing well. Just my 2 cents worth here...think before you use your back rather than your legs to lift. Again, thanks for all the prayers and well wishes. P.S. as soon as I get copies of my x-rays I will show you what they did to me.

So since the first tractor show we went to as a family in the summer of 2014, my wife has shown interest in Allis Chalmers tractors more than anything else. She says she wants something big enough to pull me out when I get in trouble with my toys So since October I've been tip-toeing around a friend of a family lead on a narrow front WD45. The owner is 90 and our friends who are his kids say it's time to sell. It's been some time since it's run and they got a new coil, plugs and battery for it a month or two ago and she came right alive. It runs great and momma's birthday is in 14 days. Along with the tractor comes a 3 bottom plow, an 8' two rowed disc, a cultivator, a few spring harrow drags and who knows what else we'll be able to dig out of the weeds. I won't be able to pick it up until there is a good frost in the ground, but she says she wants to drive it home no matter how cold it gets. 11 miles from the house, we'll see if I get to take a spin on the way home too!

I heated mine for 40+ years with wood and used oil only for backup while away from home. This fall when I topped of my oil tank and got the bill.....$1.639 / gallon, I decided to save my wood and burn the cheap oil. So far, I'm liking it.....no cutting, no splitting, no stacking, no hauling, no bugs, no ashes, and no chimney cleaning.

That brings back memories. I heated my house with a wood stove for over 30 years. Wood warms you 3 times. Once when you cut it, once when you split it and once when you burn it.

Good advice for the younguns Bob, but I'm afraid it's too late for most of us. I'm trying to decide which to have fixed first...back needs fused, both hands need carpal tunnel, and the left knee needs replaced. I guess the knee should be first, when I walk in the Mall, it pops so loud I see the people in the vicinity ducking their heads.

A few days ago while I was complaining about my sore shoulders from wrestling this "killer tiller" through my strawberry beds along side my pole barn, Mrs. K made the comment " all those little tractors...can't they help you". Sure enough, the next day when I went to the barn, there sat the 314 Hydro with the blade off for a new scraper bar that a member made for me.........It looked like a mount for a TILLER. A little cutting with the radiac and its ready to mount up. Drill a few holes, add two braces, and make a belt tensioner. More seat time...less sore shoulders.

Glad to hear you are home, Mrs. "M" is going to have her hands full being your care giver. Had my six month follow up exam this morning, Doc compared the post-surgical Xray to today's and everything is still where it is supposed to be! Be good and do exactly what your wife tells you to do (while she is watching).

It has been a long journey, but my wheel horse is finally back to work. I would like to thank every one here for your help along the way. From identifying it when i first got it to what color to do the wheels(to be put on in spring). Today I rewired it, got the charging system all wired up, and she got a new exhaust. Once that was all complete it was right to work!! f

We'll never lose Toto again Dorothy. That new tracking collar we ordered from the Sears and Roebuck catalogue is working great.

I gotta get the Grand OL' Oppri on the radio before I miss Minnie Pearl!!!

My wife and I bought a house and a year ago this time. She's wanted a garden even since she was little and we finally had the space to put one in. I've been working on this project all summer and completely forgot all about the gardening section on this forum. We'll start last fall, with this photo: It's a panoramic and shows the area on the far right that will eventually turn into a garden. Since we moved in so late in the year, we weren't sure what would have sun. It turns out this space has a good 7-8 hours of sun a day in the summer. Clearing all the extra crap that the previous owners tossed over there. Had to bust out the old 8N that my dad and I rebuilt last summer. He uses that on his hobby farm. I did this in phases over the summer. I started with the fence. Fence was stained, chicken wire was installed and that's how it sat for quite a while. I was trying to do this on a budget since we didn't need it done right now. Turns out waiting was a good thing. Leveling things out to get them closer to where they needed to be. Found a you haul and you can have as much as you want for the rock that is around all of the beds and the perimeter of the garden fence. Did that in the July heat to the tune of 4 loads of rock... Garden beds taking shape: The beds are made from cedar boards. I added bracing so they wouldn't bow when filled with dirt. I ended up adding a board across the top to sit on when weeding/picking whatever is planted. I talked to the neighbor who installed the sprinkler system at this house and we added automatic watering to the garden beds. Each bed has eight 1/4in lines that can be ran whenever within each bed for the plants that are there. Now that the garden is ready for the spring planting season, my mom and a few others are asking for garden beds to built. It only took me all summer to get this garden built. So that was my summer garden building project. Now lets just hope it'll produce some goodies next summer

i have done this in the past but i only use brake line. The 1057 rebuild was probably the most hard line i have used on a tractor. Just remember to use just a little rubber hose somewhere in the line or the vibration of the engine could eventually cause issues with the hard line. If you ran it continuously it would probably drain the battery a bit since it exceeds the charging ability, but as you said it shouldn't be run continuously and gets too hot after a few minutes. I have one that I use to help defrost the windshield of my pick up but it isn't needed more than five minutes or so. The charging system won't know it is there, all it knows is the battery needs charging and it will do what it can.

That's great news Bob. Glad it is going well. Just a caution, don't get discouraged if you get some discomfort in a few days when the meds totally wear off.

The only thing I would consider would be anything close to exhaust or high temps could cause Vapor Lock of the fuel, Do it but protect sensitive areas.

Despite the fact that the engine and fuel tank "don't Move" I would recommend making a loop at each end to avoid work-hardening of the lines due to vibration.

Thanks ACman, I'll have to keep that in mind! For now, the push/pull ignition switch is frozen up, so you need to hold two wires together for it to run, but once we take delivery I'll start soaking it with some penetrating oil and see if I can't pull it apart and clean it all up. I love the rear wheels on those things! This one has the diamond shaped tread turf tires on the rear and any land we will be on with it is good and flat. Our house is only 1.5 acres but the property we'll be moving to in the next year or two is 10 acres of farmland.

Glad to hear your home Bob and doing well. I second what Bob said. Take care of your back. When you're young you don't think about your back but when you get old and have back trouble, the pain won't let you think about anything else.

As a matter of fact I did have a very small diameter custom 3 spoke steering wheel with a cheap horn button kit that would honk the horn if I turned the steering wheel to fast.......

Houston, we have pump! Holy cats these cast iron pumps are heavy, it's gotta be better than 10lbs It fits the pump mount plate I drew up and had cut out perfectly too. I'm told that the weight of the pump itself is all it takes to set the belt tension. I believe it too. I also found that Farm and Fleet sells stock size hydraulic hoses and my pump supply hose is 3/8" x 60" long. On sale today for $11.99. Now I only need a couple of pipe fittings and a suction hose in 3/4" diameter.

I spent many, many hours driving a WD and pulling a brush hog. I could tell a lot of stories about the trials & tribulations with this tractor!

Thanks @RedRanger you gave a good explanation of what I wanted to pass along. Too many otherwise good projects are less than they should be because of a little lack of attention to details or lack of understanding of little techniques that make a difference.

I just hope I did not jinx Iowa by saying that. I talked with John today...he is like it is his 1st time finger-painting in Kindergarten. I told him, "Pick me up and we go to Iowa City and find the perfect sports bar." What a great time that would be, and he would not be sitting next to anybody from MSU. I think it will be more fun and cheaper then going to the Championship Game. Maybe we will go to Texas...maybe Pasadena...maybe Iowa City.

Dick, that is great news. I'm glad to hear you are doing well. Mrs. M told me that I needed a shower, so I just got my first shower, changed my clothes, put on my socks and shoes, and got back into the recliner with my smartphone. Mrs M only had to dry my back. I am having little to no pain. Only two Extra-strength Tylenol since 8 a.m.. I don't know if I'm wired differently, but so far I must say that this is much a different experience than I was expecting. Also, according to my pedometer app, I have walked 4600 steps today. That's 2.1 miles. I guess it is time for a nap.

we are pretty much on the same page with this I did not state to measure from the deepest scalp but that what I was thinking the problem with the deeper neutral scalps is you lose spring pressure in neutral position as both rods have deeper neutral scalps and you are stuck with a stop pin that only takes in count one of them for length so in neutral the détente balls will be in there farthest position with the lest amount of pressure on them from the spring HI STEVE Brian

Steve I have had old transmissions do this and if everything inside is right you should not be able to get the shift lever out of one fork and in to the other without the transmission being in neutral if you tear this down really look at these parts shift lever check ball diam. should be around .500 be sure there are no flats on the sides of the ball also look at hole for set screw pin in collar to be round and not hogged out and collar tight to shaft shift forks check for radius grooves in slot where shift lever ball contacts sides also check all detente parts Brian

I'm still here. Everything is fine though. I'm walking good and pain is manageable. Taking 5mg Percocet every 12 hours. The reason they haven't let me go is because the surgical drain is still draining more than is allowable under the doctors protocol. Probably tomorrow morning.

The material 1075 from Mcmaster carr comes as treated,so it has to be annealed, cut, shaped, heat treated, tempered, then finish fitting. Yeah... takes quite a bit.

"strokes". To flatten out a surface the proper way is to sand in two opposite or diagonal directions back and forth. Don't use your hand as your hand is not flat. Your hand cups the sandpaper and grinds high and low spots. Sanding in the same direction all the time leaves high and low spots. Sanding in a circle leaves high and low spots. Sanding with short strokes eats low spots in to your surface. To get your surface flat, use straight strokes in two different directions on top of each other using a solid block of wood or proper sanding block. Another trick for curved areas is to use a cardboard tube as a sanding block. It has been almost a year now and I've been remiss with the updates. The transmission is back together... Along with the rest of the sheet metal... Just a few minor parts to go including Terry's decals.... A new set of Carlisle's ... A year or so later the old girl is back on her feet.... The heat shield and belt guard held things up a bit but it finally came together.

Got rid of the MAD MAX look.
