9 pointsI guess one is never enough. Very innocently I acquired a 69 charger v8 to get going for my son. Well its up and going now and the girls ask me where there's are. So now I have 3 wheel horses in two months. I picked up a running and driving rj58 and a 60 suburban with a plow. I thought the whole getting addicted thing was a joke and now I am searching high and low for all things wheel horse. Hopefully pics will post. Thanks to all that offered help with my boys tractor! Pick these both up from my local shop for $600 for the pair. Both do run but I have to tinker with them a bit.

6 pointsMods if this isn't appropriate for this section feel free to move it. I wanted to give Glen Pettit a big thumbs up for recent purchase I made from him. I bought 6 wheel horse koozies from him so that I could pass a few out for Christmas presents, of course I ordered enough to keep one for myself. You all know beer will taste better drinking out of a wheel horse koozie. Anway, they are top notch product and he even through a couple freebies! Good guy to do business with.

4 pointsHi! New member here. My Name is Scott and I live in Sweetwater Tennessee. Retired Air Force and now enjoying the retired life. Im the owner of a 1976 B-80 for about 4 years and I have the 36" tiller and yesterday purchased the push blade anticipating some snow this year. I use the 36" rear discharge deck regularly to cut about 3 of my 7 acres with the Wheel Horse. I think I need a bigger deck! The tiller gets plenty of use as I do gardening and can all of my vegetables in the summer. Looking forward to gathering and sharing info on here. Thanks for having me. Scott

3 pointsI think that's what I heard her say! Or maybe in not so many or the same words. But I just had to! Saw it in Craigslist, saw the price and bought in the dark last night. Got some issues but I drove it up the ramps! Haven't had time to unload or really check it out, yet. Funny part, I live in NY and this was an hour and a half into Vt. We get it all loaded and 10pm or so I head back but stopped to fill up. Just me and another car at the station and the other driver gets out, asks me if he can look at the tractor and then proceeds to tell me it's history! What are the odds? It does need a ignition switch but he tells me the rear leaks real bad and will need a heavy duty hub kit. Maybe axles. I didn't know they had any issues? "Hub kit" And I was surprised to hear maybe axles. He says these "xi"s rears are not fun to work on either! Well, hard to get at. Not what I wanted to hear but for what I paid for it, it really doesn't matter. 522xi 48" deck weight box 17cu/ft (I think!) Toro trailer

3 pointsNow that I have folks attention on this subject. I think you should have to be a supporter to sell. Why? A 20 dollar bill is a cheap price to pay, helps support this great site and also makes it way easier on the seller to. Load pictures to your hearts content. Simplifies that picture loading ordeal. Nothing sells things like pictures. How many times over and over have folks had problems.. plenty. Also over the few years I have been here, people show up just to sell something,,,then,,,gone. Never to be heard from till they find something else to sell. When I am looking to buy,,desecriptions are ok, but I want pictures to. One picture is worth a thousand words. Not meaning to start a brawl here either, just voicing my thoughts on the simple ideas of using red square to sell things. Its a 2 way street and benfits seller, buyer and the website. And these comments are my humble opinion only on this subject.

3 pointsToday I thought I would try to get the Tecumseh HS50 in the RJ35 to run. It ran before I installed it but nothing since. I about janked my arm off trying to get it to run last evening. Well, what could be the problem .... it's got fuel (starting fluid too), It's got compression, and I see spark. Fuel and compression for sure ... lets go for a spark failure. First thought was "flywheel key". Flywheel almost just fell off. I put a screwdriver behind it and did not even have to put any pressure on it and the flywheel was off. Yep.... this is the problem ... a loose flywheel and sheered key. NOPE ... key not sheered, just a little offset. Now to the points ... cover not on correct. Point connector block not properly installed. So I fixed that problem and cleaned and gapped the points. Put it back together with a new flywheel key. Rotated the flywheel by hand and there was good spark at the plug. With it all back together a few pulls had it running. So it was something with the points but nothing too obvious. Now that it runs I installed a muffler support. Exhaust is made from ¾" electrical conduit. Now another small problem .... oil leaving the crank seal. Easy fix ...I hope! And..... do I need this primer bulb? The carb has a choke and I'm not running it in the winter. I was going to just cap off the nipple. The motor is from a snowblower. That's it for now. Thanks for listening, Joe .

3 pointsI don't think so Rob. Last year OSU was flirting with the 4th, 5th and 6th spot and they beat a good Wisconsin team. Sorry John, but Iowa is ranked 9, 10 11 depending on which pole you look at. The rest of their schedule is against Indiana at 4-4, Minnesota at 4-4, Purdue at 2-6 and Nebraska at 3-6...really...the bottom of the league...they would have to have the style points to move up in the rankings...unless...somebody fell. Clemson is actually listed No#1 in the power rankings (and that is what counts). They have a tougher last 4 games then Iowa. LSU at #3 has to beat a couple of good ranked teams and they would be in...if they do. That leaves Baylor, TCU, and Oklahoma St....all undefeated with no conference championship game. (Big 12)...and they got shuned last year. Michigan St. is 6th in the power rankings. No doubt...a lot can happen in the next 3 to 4 weeks...but I really think that Iowa would need a ton of help from the other conferences to make the playoffs if they run the season at 12-0. and even 13-0 winning the BTC. It is Nebraska's fault...if they would have not lost half of their games in the last play...Iowa would be about 6 ranked instead of 11. Wisconsin did not help Iowa either by how they played. The west side of the Big Ten might as well get used to it as long as the big 3 are kicking every one's butt. Rob and John and everyone else have been around this sport long enough to know how things work. I am not saying anything bad about Iowa (for a change) I am really kind of pulling for them at this point. I just think a ton of things have to happen for Iowa to play in the final 4. The world according to stevasaurus.

3 pointsI don't know what your fabrication skills are, but I would HIGHLY recommend custom fenders with running boards that bolt on in stock locations. It is VERY easy to slip a foot off the footrest and have it fall right in the path of the tires. Also weight down the front end of those tractors like crazy! My 854 is a front engine tractor but its still light enough to pick the front wheels up going up a hill or if the clutch is slipped off of. The small horses are cute, and seem good for kids because of the size but really arent all that safe. I picked up my 854 for my son to ride in the future (he's 2), but after working with it myself the future got pushed back pretty far! He will be riding the 520H long before the 854. Your kids are (probably) old enough to understand the safety of it as long as they can reach all the controls. I just like to be over careful rather than under prepared!

3 pointsJust wanted to wish all my friends here on the forum Happy Holidays a bit early!!! I will be thinking of all you while sitting here on the warm beach of the Bahamas!!! Steven P.S. I do miss my garden toys though...

3 pointsI saw Charlie (Clintonnut) put a set of chrome rings in an old Clinton at the big show in PA. The cylinder walls were rusted and pretty bad. No Cleaning no nothing done, just those rings. He started it up and thing smoked like a chimney. Just let it run on the ground for a while and it stopped by the time it went through a tank of fuel, plus it was running real nice. That engine was sold before it ran out of gas.

2 pointsHello! New member from Canada here! I have been bitten by the horse! My story goes like this..... I live on a 2 acre property most of which the lawn is groomed and mowed. I had an Ariens lawn tractor that had more issues than I did advil for the headaches it gave me. It was a big box store model ariens so it was, well to put it nicely.....junk. I was fed up and the Mrs and I come to terms it was time to buy a brand new garden tractor. So off to the green and yellow tractor dealership I went expecting to spend way more than I cared for. I get there and look at some of the heavier duty green and yellows when over in the corner of the lot I see this red square tractor. "Whats that?" I asked the salesman. "That there is a Wheel Horse" he replies. "Don't know anything about them, just selling it for my neighbours who had a small hobby farm and have since moved to a smaller house." he says. So ten minutes later I am the proud new owner of a 314-8 Wheel Horse. Paid $700 Canadian dollar for it or roughly $530 US! I pull up to my house and the wife says that doesn't look like a new tractor nor a JD. I don't know what it was about it but I had to have it, and I saved thousands of dollars. The 314-8 is in good condition and runs great. Fast forward about 5 weeks later.....I am constantly on kijiji looking for attachments for the 314-8. Then one day I see an ad just listed. Couldn't resist. I am the proud new owner of a what I believe to be 1960 Suburban. I paid $150 Canadian for it or roughly $110 US. Still trying to figure out if it is a 400 or 550. The original motor is replaced with a 8hp Techumseh. Pull start with electric starter option. I am going to start a new thread on my Suburban sometime in the future as it needs some work....a lot of work. I have attached a few pics of Suburban...note the exhaust coming right through the hood and also "custom" throttle and choke locations....gonna fix that!

2 pointsHadn't thought about that but now that you have my "attention", I suppose... If there are folks that only visit to sell and contribute nothing else, maybe that makes sense. At least they would pay something for the service before they left. However I remember very well not having 20 bucks, and honestly, that has happened more than once in my life, and too recently to be forgotten! Just wouldn't want anyone who really couldn't afford it to suffer anymore than they already are... Maybe that's a tad silly, and maybe more take advantage of this site than I suspect, if indeed that is taking advantage, not sure... On the other hand, I do think there should be some things that should trigger becoming a Supporter and perhaps that could/should be one of them. Maybe an entry level "Junior Supporter" for $10 or a donation of any amount. Honestly, this site is basically invaluable to a Wheel Horse devotee, but should we have a $100 Supporter level? $500 Supporter? $1000 Supporter? I think we could/would have a few of each! I can't afford to join the top levels so I'm not volunteering to become an advanced member, but honestly, I've gotten more than my money's worth and I'm not quite up for renewal yet! . It is too bad that someone might just offer something for sale and not hang around long enough to get a chance to experience the camaraderie, genuine good will laced knowledge this site offers everyday! I suppose it boils down to what the purpose of this site is and what it costs to achieve that. I think I have a clue about one side but I'm clueless about the other side. What does it cost? Are more funds needed? Could even more be done with more $$$? Don't know! But I can tell you one thing, this is a great site because of all the folks that contribute much more than just the money! Not just the forum, the Admin or the Moderators! Not just the Member's help! There's a lot more going on here! There's a synergy! Something special here that just works! I almost hesitate to change a thing! And to quote another great Supporter, "... these comments are my humble opinion only on this subject. "

2 pointsI think $600 was a deal! Plow and weights are worth $100 each. 400 is worth $300+ RJ is worth $400-$600 as is if it runs good. I'd bet the package is worth $900+. You did good. At those ages, I'd be concerned with exhaust burns, engine pulleys, and getting their legs under the rear tires while in motion. Also school them on keeping their hands out of the backside of the drive pulleys. Oh! and don't pop the clutch at wide open throttle! Safety first.

2 pointsJust keep in mind that we can make some pretty big snowballs and with a few WHs we can also get one rolling down to you!

2 pointsJohn, I'm chasing you! Trouble is I've never even seen a 523xi! Doesn't look good that I will ever catch you! DougC, it might very well need some $$$ before it's over, but I basically didn't pay anything for the tractor. Didn't haggle over the price either! Xearl! Please share what you know about the "hub issue"! 857 horse, you are so correct! Without this group I first off wouldn't have known what the heck a 522xi was nor have had the confidence to know that if I don't know someone if not several folks would know how to fix it. Maybe even have the parts at a reasonable price! I was a ferry ticket, 90 minutes and another day away so I was determined to get it all in there. I had NO room to spare to get the tractor and the cart in and just managed to get the tail gate closed! We also barely got the deck up and over the side! Heavy! Sweet ride home though! We did! I'm trusting you are still smiling! It's like Christmas! Or Father's day! Only lasts longer!

2 pointsI agree! I almost bought a 520 last month but I'll keep looking for a bigger one. C160s are one my scope too. Thanks for the warm welcome from all. Last two days I've been on leaf duty and cutting. I just got back from a one month trip to England.

2 pointsStorage space is not an issue. Convincing the wife I need a dozen Wheel Horse tractors is where I may run into a problem!
-
2 pointsThat's pretty cool Richard. OK, how many of you just tried to write backwards? I've seen those plexiglass boards and never even gave it a thought about writing backwards. I could print but my cursive wasn't very good. Here's another one to try. I'd argue about the great mind thing though. That there ain't not me. Now that I think of it my typing looks like this. Maybe I don't have to keep correcting my typos.

2 pointsI do have some more "vintage" footage of the old tractor owned by my dad. I just uploaded a video from a home movie, taken with regular 8mm film, probably in 1964. I am the little tyke driving it in the video, my older brother Jack started it up for me. This was taken in Emsworth, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKbB4oTky2s&feature=youtu.be I'll take some current pictures of my uncles wheelhorse next and post them maybe tomorrow.

1 pointI just saw this Wheel horse with a really big digger for sale in Sweden! I have never seen anything like this, so I tried to Google but found nothing. I Guess it could be made in Finland (because of the name) or probably sweden. The instruction manual is iin Swedish also. Has anyone seen this before? Lifts the poor tractor right off the ground! Edit, I had a closer look and it states on the instruction manual that it is from Finland, produced by OY KEPPO AB.

1 pointI would like to share this idea to help take some of the weight which the snowblower/thrower adds to the front, and add it to the rear. While also making the blower easier to lift. I know some of you use the spring to help with lifting, but most of its tension is when the blower is in the down position. I ran the cable directly through the cable tube and not using the rock shaft. Ran it it through a pulley (NOS idler I had) which is connected to the "attach-o-matic" and back to the bottom hole in the lift arm. While the flag is in the upper hole of the lift arm, the weight that is in the rear, is connected to he bottom hole giving the added weight a little better mechanical advantage. So the weight in the back is actually helping to lift the weight in the front.
-
1 pointYes, the engine needs to come out to remove the shrouds. Basically, remove the side supports, disconnect the driveshaft, throttle linkage, and electrical connections. The engine has four bolts to remove and then lift vertically because of the oil drain that hangs below the engine until it clears. Support it so that you don't break off the drain while working on the engine. Mark everything so it can go back together. According to the Kohler Command engine manual, the shrouds should be cleaned every 100 hours. Kohler does sell an access panel kit that you can install to gain access for cleaning without removing the engine. It needs to come out though to install the kit.

1 pointAfter cleaning fuel tanks a couple times I now fill up using a screen or cloth to keep junk from the gas can from going in the tank. Even though I clean the gas can regularly junk just mysteriously seems to get in there sometimes.

1 pointThey installed reflective metal panels in all the lights in one of our bldgs. They left behind a panel so I scarfed it. I cut a couple of pieces bent them to fit and siliconed them in.
-
1 pointI am very nervous about those things. They are familiar with pulley dangers and the exhaust dangers. Never allowed on any of the tractors with shorts or flip flops. Number 1 rule is long pants and boots to ride. No exceptions. The exposed tires is my main concern at the moment and that is a deal breaker because I just can't let them ride.We have a few tractors now that they all run around on so they know the ins and outs pretty well when it comes to being safe. They learned on this old gravely 810
-
1 pointDang Dennis...nice horse, very nice deck, plus a good looking trailer...and no one even mentioned the nice cup holder.
-
1 pointTurns out like many said that it is operating just perfect under power from engine. Charger is complete and up and running perfectly. Thanks for all the help. Now I have a 60 suburban and an rj58 to get going for the girls
-
1 pointLooks to me like you did OK............. Everything I've ever bought needed work. That's part of the low, low price and part of the thrill of victory when you get it done......
-
1 pointI didn't notice earlier when I looked at the post.............. A winch would be handy to have, but a wench.....NOW we're talk'in................
-
1 pointWinch....Ha Ha....I thought is said WRENCH. I got to get my eyes checked...................
-
1 pointGarry makes a VERY good point. Different air pressure in the tires will also cause that to happen. If any or all of the above doesn't correct the problem, adjust the air pressure in the tires to get the desired result.
-
1 pointJust so you know...you gotta keep 'em seperated. They breed like...well, ummm....you know...'s Two become four, which then become eight real quick.
-
1 pointI like the lights as well. I did something similar with my C-160. The lights I got came from Wally World and are a bit smaller. I put a plate in place of the original lens and mounted the halogen lights through the plate. To finish it off, Terry made me a decal for the front so it looks very close to original just much more functional. Just be careful running the lights long with the engine idling, the lights pull about 10 amps and the alternator doesn't charge that much at slow speeds. Its fine for awhile if your battery is good, just something to think about.
-
1 pointHope it works out for you but there are a lot of missing splines on that pump shaft. Not a whole lot left to transfer 20 hp....
-
1 pointTach-a-Matic attachments will fit for you. Most 1973 and up Cs, 300s, 400, and most 500s will fit and of course most anything you tow behind will as well. You might like a 42" deck. They made both side and rear discharge models. I'm pretty partial to the rear discharge. Be careful hanging out around here though! You will not only find out about all kinds of attachments that will work, but all kinds of other Wheel Horses and you'll meet folks that like to help out and talk about them. Before you know it you're spending far more time than you would have ever thought exploring the World of Wheel Horses! Just a warning! Oh! And welcome!
