4 pointsI'm just curious about doing a Caption This thread on a regular basis. The idea is simple. I post a pic and you members post captions to it. Keeping it family friendly is of utmost importance to me so as not to offend anyone. The first one got a nice response so I though it might be a fun addition to the site. Not sure as to how often it would be posted yet, and ideas for picture subjects are welcome via pm or in this thread. Karl is ok with it but I'm also waiting to get more input from the rest of the Admin/Mod team. Give us your thoughts here if you would. Thanks, JimD

4 pointsThis is almost all done ,I've got 1 rim to paint gas filter to change and it will almost be done . well it's never done completely right guys. But I might have a gold mine the guy at my local scrap yard is going to call me if he gets any wheel horse's in. and he will save them for me to buy at scrap price, Never know what will come in. I got 5 gals of rv antifreeze in both rear tires with new tubes front and rear need front weight somehow. I got my new decals from terry today and they look great. 10 mins had them on very easy to apply ,thanks terry

4 pointsWhen you enter something in the Search box a new box appears to the left of it with "All Content plus a down arrow" Click on that down arrow and a drop down menu appears. If you are looking for a manual click on Files. Then the search will be done in the Files only. When the results come up there is another drop down menu at the top of the first result on the right named "Sort by". Click on that and select "Relevancy" Entering a model number in the search box for a tractor won't always bring up the results you want. In that case enter the model year and model name i.e. 1990 312-8 and sort by Relevancy. The Yahoo Manuals Groups are still there spread over about 30 Groups but are totally useless. I can't even figure out what files are there or where they are and I put them there. So far they haven't figured out their changes were not needed or wanted and will leave them to take up bandwidth for ever. The old Yahoo Databases were the slickest thing since sliced bread and any member could use them. Some have 10,000 entries and the searched results would come in a second. In all their wisdom they decided a database should have a maximum of 1000 entries. Now I can't even use them and Yahoo considers it progress. Garry

3 pointsI totally disagree with Lynn. I can find things now...where I could not before...and the search function is so much better. All he really has to do is ask for a manual and Garry will put in the link. Doesn't get any easier then that. http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/files/

3 pointsPicked up a pair of mounted used Ag tires at an auction yesterday. They are Carlisle Super lugs 23 10.50x12 mounted on 8.5" rims. Put them on my 310-8 (she is my pulling tractor...that is trailers and other stuff not competition). She had Deestone Super extra grip 23 10.50x12 on WH 7.5" rims. Look at the difference. Wish I knew where the 8.5" rims came from as the backset is perfect for WHs... By the way Bob Maynards Studs and lug nut set made swap a breeze
-
3 pointsYeah Jim, I could have rode my bike to the auction and hung it on the "bike rack" for the ride home. Also could have helped PennDOT out by scraping off several road killed groundhogs.

3 pointsThe glass windshield does stiffen the front of the cab a bit. Instead of 35 mph, you can drive up to 36 mph. Seriously I noticed a difference in stiffness when I went to the glass windshield, but not that I would drive any faster as well. Two cabs for winter duty. Nice! About 2 miles @35 MPH Mac. With only 2 miles to rustle it home I might have put some seat time on it and rode it
-
3 pointsWhat I would like to know is, how did you get that thing home on a open trailer with a soft cab on it? I would have thought the wind would have beat that cab to bits. Unless it was a short distance at relativley low speed. Congrats on a very nice find.

3 pointsWell I managed to make the frame fit, got it blasted except for the outside ends. Frame plate was cracked I got time tonight to weld it up then add a reinforcing plate to the inside. NO I am not a professional welder, maybe just good enough to be dangerous. Primed frame and painted transmission mating plate.

2 pointsThis is not a very nice tractor, but it belonged to my late father for the last 25 years, so it's going to get a new lease on life, and a modification or two I figure he would approve of... My dad's neighbor bought it new (in 1984) but it is an 80, my dad bought it from him in 1990. When he passed and my mom (85) took up mowing she hated the 8 speed so I bought her a new hydrostatic craftsman and ran off with this. It was rusty, and covered by brushed on flat black paint. It ran great, but the rubber in the shaker mounts was gone. The tranny had started popping out of high range and one axle/hub key way was destroyed and he had drilled through both and inserted a 1/4 bolt. Here is the only picture of it while it was still mostly together. The pad eye on the mule drive was welded on so he could drag it out of the woods when the keyway spun. And I apologize for the mess that is my garage.

2 pointsWhere I am at now.... Transmission came apart, the hi/low fork was fine. actually except for needing an axle replaced it all looked ok after a good cleaning. I replaced the axle needle bearings and replaced seals and axle. The oil was mostly rusty muddy water. upgraded to a NOS set of hubs with 2 set screws. Re-powering with an M-18, I couldn't find anything local so I did this the hard way. I started with a good running verticle engine, a horizontal block and crank, and came up with this ever escalating pile of money pit... All because I wanted to run a bigger deck, so of coarse I had to go with a non horse motor and add the expense of an electric PTO well that went side ways, (picture) not sure how to correct that... LOL Today brown Santa showed up with a set of wheel blanks from Miller, just burned these together. 10-1/2" of wide goodness to go with these...

2 pointsYou're right, it's not a very nice tractor... it's an AWESOME , that includes some great family history. for sharing it here.

2 pointsI'm "hoping" that's just a catch phrase to get it to sell. Because parting it out would be Tupid! If he's gonna part it out, Id be interested in the frame, hood, transmission, wheels n tires, engine, etc ...LOL

2 pointsThere all worth restoring if you want one and am willing to spend the time on them. My 401 was in pretty much the same shape of your 551 when I got it and this is it now.

2 pointsI was outside giving this some thought today...and in this point I agree with cowboy...when you do a search anymore (even in manuals) it searches the whole site and gives you 14 pages where, say like, 414-8 was mentioned. Garry if what you are saying will narrow the search parameters to the "Manuals Section" only...that is a plus and maybe can take care of Cowboy's frustration. Lynn, we went through a change of not only site but software. We are not Forumer anymore, and we lost some data in the shuffle. About the time you are talking about...Karl saved this site from loosing all of it's threads and bought a new place for us to be. Sure we have had some changes, and some for the better. If you look around on the site, you will see what I am talking about. Gwest is the Manuals Moderator and he is also from the Yahoo groups...it is all here and the Yahoo Groups are not the same as you remember either. Lynn, you can do what you want, but if you give this a chance (and I do not think you did) I think you will find this the same friendly place it always was...and if you are looking for something...we will find it for you. I do not take kindly to anybody talking bad about this site, and not giving it a chance to prove itself. I do not think you gave it a chance. You want a manuals site..that is nothing but???? Here it is. You get what you pay for. http://www.mywheelhorse.com/modules.php?name=Docs&do=show_doc&id=1

2 pointsI'm an old retired guy. long hair, white beard, look kind of like a garden nomb......All I would need are the pointy shoes and pointy hat....... .That would be to easy and predictable.....I could dress up as a hippy...... Still have all the cloths from the '60s and a real nice mid 60s Gibson accoustic guitar. Nah, wife would just get mad at me when all the old hippy women were throwing themselves at me....(cough) I thought about a horse named Rusty costume, carrying around a huge empty can of beefaroni, like the Seinfeld episode, and a can of fart spray concealed in the other hand....... Probably offend some people. (You can't even say hi to some people these days without offending them... ) That settles it. The beefaroni eating farting horse it shall be!!! Might as well take advantage of the last part of the full moon and p*ss off as many people as I can....... Woops............ Forgot to ask what you guys are gonna do...... Yet another senior moment........

2 pointsI look up manuals here all the time without any problem. I took me a little time to get on to how they were listed, but I know my way around there now.

2 pointsYou know I am coming over there Lars. They are talking airfare at around $70 next year. The airfare, I can afford...the $50 pizzas I don't know. Beautiful pictures Lars...thanks

I am going to put a brown trash bag over my head with corn nuts taped to it, broom handlle walking stick with a roll of toilet paper attached...guess what I am??

2 pointsThe idea here is to keep it out of the Just for Fun forum so it gets more exposure. The types of picture I'll post should make it easy yo keep it family friendly.

2 pointsThis was sad to watch. I watched it live while I was in Buffalo.... Was hard to not cry for the guy. You could feel that he wanted to still coach, but whatever health condition he has, is draining him of his focus on the team. You could sense the love he has for the kids and the team. It was humbling to watch. Several time throughout the broadcast he had to stop because of his emotions. It makes one realize that we are all the same, we put our pants on the same, one leg at a time. We all stand up the same way, we all eat the same way, we all have the same body functions that need to be dealt with daily. Sometimes we imagine these guys and gals are superhuman, but they are not, they are just like you and I. I get the privilege to stand beside some of the most prominent government officials. Some of the top sports players. Some of the most influential speakers of our time. ALL of them have stories that let me know they are just like me. The only difference is they were in the right place at the right time that helped them with their career. That and a passion to never quit. RMC

2 pointsThis really sounds like you have just had a Dr. Phil moment...using the site as a sounding board. Needless to say, some pictures are in order.. I really like your idea. For me, this is my favorite Holiday and my favorite time of year. My wife decorates the inside and outside of the house to the hilt. Unfortunately, we do not get a lot of Trick-or-Treaters. I have been know to sit out on the porch, like a stuffed scare crow, and come alive when the little tikes approach. Usually, I am a big softy and hand out a good handful of the good candies...and I mean the good candies. HAPPY HALLOWEEN.

2 pointsHere are a few more pics. I checked it out a little closer. Don't know how I missed the meter with 601 hours. No sign of the deck ever being on the tractor. The mule drive, lift bar and belt still in a sealed bag. Doesn't appear the PTO ever saw a belt and the plow was only used on pavement... no stone scratches. Weight bracket, but no weights. Good wheel weights and rubber chains. Pretty clean ...no grass under the hood. Wait a minute......That looks like my trailer. Now what do I do with this CLASSIC GEM ???

1 pointMy first W/H ( a 401) was so bad,,,i thought it was a part of a parking lot striping machine...and it was being dumped in the local land fill... well..........the rest is history..and an 8 speed...im thnking about 7 tractors later.....i still have that 401....it is like my first kid...... and some know how that story can go....but,,,for now its warm in a shed and a keeeper... howard in virginia

1 pointAttached is the information I found on the site to get the parts. Note that the following pin was the wrong size so I reground the original. Also, I found that the bearings on the wheel spindles were shot and cleaning the spindles, removing the remainder of the disintegrated bearings, re-greasing, and installing new bearings (from McMaster & Carr) made steering much easier and that probably eases the work for the steering box. Hope this helps. steering parts.pdf note that there is an image AND a pdf -- you should look at both for parts information.

1 pointJust joined WHCC direct off their website. Took all of one minute on line with PayPal... Waiting on snow so I can use the plow!!!
-
1 pointAs long as the hub comes off, and there is no up/down motion to the axle (indicating a bad bearing), replacing the seal is fairly easy from the outside of the case.

1 pointI attended the Show (this year) for the first time. After learning there was not an entry fee, and seeing first hand how much work and planning went in to putting on such an event, I became a proud member of the WHCC. I will encourage all RS members who attend the big show but are not members of the WHCC to support them by also becoming a member of their club.
-
1 pointI think Karl hit the nail on the head. I'm sure there some club members who feel the show has almost gotten to big. Let's face it, it easier to put on a show with 100 tractors and 500 people visiting as opposed to 800 tractors and 1500 people attending. I was talking to Bob and Craig on Friday night during dinner. I said The tractors were only a small part of the reason I attended. The main reason is all the great people on Red Square. How else would a bunch of "grown ups" get all wound up and excited about driving half way across the country and attending a tractor show. I have a family reunion next month and attending the show felt like the same thing to me. I dare say without Red Square I wouldn't attend the show unless I had to to try to buy some much needed replacement parts. The friends I've made make me want to attend and I'm all ready planning next year's trip.
