8 pointsFor me the forum is kind of like having a bunch of buddies hanging out in the shop discussing a range of topics and helping each other with advice, sharing knowledge and occasionally giving a little good hatred jab. Some topics we just listen and learn, others we can contribute on. Lots of great folks here who have helped me and may not even know it.

7 pointsLike Yogi B. says " Cash is as good as money". I never leave a paper trail. My biggest fear now is, when I pass on, She will sell all my toys for what I told her I paid for them.
-
6 pointsStopped in the leaves while I was out cruisin' this morning, and snapped a couple pics...hope you like.
-
6 pointsIts fun being here JP. The fun and fellowship along with the wealth of Wheel Horse and Kohler, Tecky, and Onan knowledge is what keeps me here. God Bless America and all of us at Red Square

5 pointsBreaking my ankle in June has meant everything was put on hold. I hadn't tried to run any tractors until today. The two diesels were on battery tenders so thankfully weren't a problem getting started. The other tractors have literally been where they were in June since then. Plus the workbench-cleaning fairy never got the message so that will need to be cared for as well. But I was finally able to try an attachment option that I had been considering over seven months ago. I had been emailing Greg at Heavy Hitch about adapting his Hitch'N Can to a sleeve hitch. He does sell an adapter to mate a 2" receiver to a sleeve hitch. I wanted something specifically for a sleeve hitch so that it wouldn't be so far out from the fulcrum of the hitch. The first one was too short and only raised the can about 3". The revised version arrived after I had my accident so wasn't able to try it until today. It works perfectly! I had it painted Kubota Orange so that I could see it in the dark. It also is long enough that I can have the cab on and still not touch it in the raised position. The ironic thing about this is I was going to use it for yard waste as I have a wheeled yard waste can. Save a step and just put it in the can they pickup from. The county changed the size restriction (the existing can is too big) so I would need to get another can. Greg was sceptical about a market for this so if you contact him for one, do me a favor and mention my name. It should work on a regular clevis hitch as well.

4 pointsHere is what has worked for me over the course of being married for 22 yrs. I don't take from house money to pay for any of my toys or support my hobbies.. I think the only reason is because I hate asking permission and I really don't feel like trying to explain my reasons. My slush money comes from side jobs that I do or tractors, boats and or outboards that I restore. My wife could care a less what I have and she NEVER asks where did I get the money to buy something..One day this past summer my wife gets home from work and she sees I have a new toy in the driveway, a very nice 1970 Chevy pickup.. She had no idea I was getting it. All she said was that I finally got something in a color that she likes... Neither of us asks and I'll never tell....
-
4 pointsDougC Buy her a snow shovel and then ask if she wants you to take that tractor back!

3 pointsMy Mrs Rules took to the 520, no problems... no lie...drives her tractors...better than she drives her car.
-
3 pointsHer own tractor you say?????????????? Let me tell you about the time I tried to teach my wife to drive the 520H. Ok I said its an automatic trans. no clutch. GOOD she said .It was a warm spring afternoon in central Iowa. We live in the country on 20 acres 2 miles from town. She climbed on and I gave the instruction on how to operate. Starts just like my truck she said with a big smile! Now move the throttle lever till the tach shows about 2000 rpm. Now move the motion lever ahead slow and you will start moving. The tractor jumped ahead and sped away... By now she was screaming DOUG, DOUG and franticly turning the steering wheel . Push the brake pedel or move the lever to stop I yelled....................She shoved down on that brake pedel so hard It almost threw her off the tractor. I HATE THIS THING she screamed as she walked back toward the house............ Yeah maybe I should get her one..... Then I could be single again.......

3 pointsI have to qualify this as perhaps not the best advise, but.... I few years back, I took my now X wife out for "a quiet weekend away, to celebrate our anniversary, " I also took the pick up " in case of snow" and we drove across 3 states. Darn was she upset when we picked up the engine I had just bought for my car.

3 pointsThe Squaw here supports every hobby that I've ever had.She NEVER questions any of my purchases.Without a doubt, she's the best woman that I've ever had in my life.

2 pointsgot for 300.00, was told that the original owner couldn't afford the mower deck with the horse, so he got the blueprints from the WH dealer and built it himself out of stainless steel. What i'm interested in is what model it should be. I thought 655 had a square hood. Bruce

2 pointsI compost the leaves all the time . I start picking them up about mid November and finally finish in January. Only have about 3/4 acre but a boat load of trees. Had too take down a white oak this year due to a lighting strike, one of the smaller trees , 27 inches at the stomp. Stomp is about 24 inches high. I have an enclosure for the leaves. Mow them up , pick up with vacuum wagon which cuts them up finer and finally push into enclosure with snow plow and the then turn over with rototiller. Makes real nice dirt in a couple of years.

2 pointsThanks Ed for the suggestion. I did not realize that there were options for the plastic part. Never did understand why someone like Wheel Horse, that built such heavy duty tractors, would make a plastic part especially in the area where it could get hit so easily! Doug And for Mike...it is an automatic. The only way to go with a snow plow is the hydraulic. When you get to be my age anything that helps get things up is an advantage!

2 pointsBe sure your not putting the tube in backwards, make sure the stem is on the up side, sometimes I put just a tiny bit of air in the tubes to get the wrinkles out then pull the core, to let the air back out.
-
2 pointsYou don't. Once I get the tire mounted, I hold the rubber part of the stem with a small pair of vice-grips, then remove the tool, and inflate. Once inflated, the vice-grips are removed and you are good to go.
-
1 pointI filled a pair 10 years ago using just a small funnel with a hose that slipped over the valve assembly (and removing the valve stem). I had to "burp" the tire from time to time, but it only took about 1/2 an hour per tire to add about 7 gallons of washer fluid.
-
1 pointActually you do not want to fill the tire above the valve stem when it is at the top of the wheel../.Screws up your pressure guage if it takes on water/fluid. There are tables for tractor tires on how many gallons you should put in a given size tire. The lay it down and tilt theory sounds about right to me.

1 pointww2 era jeep valve stem protectors will work, they thread on to the valve stem preventing the stem from being sucked in to the tire. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jeep-Willys-MB-Ford-GPW-A5987-Tire-tube-valve-stem-protector-QT5-WWII-G503-/221401735632

1 pointI had my wife drive once; we were filling a low spot near the creek, I would fill the dump cart using the front end loader and she would drive over and back the cart up to the spot, dump it and come back for another. About the third load she forgot to come out of reverse and ended up in the creek; hasn't offered to drive one since.

1 pointJust to add a little insight, the original book shows up from time to time on eBay and other venues. There are several factors that drove the price up. The scarcity of the book, and the fact that the picture of the naked lady driving the Wheel Horse at a nudist colony was removed from the second edition. Also the quality of the second edition left a lot to be desired. It is truly a market driven price. The 3rd edition, which is far and away the best, has the naked lady picture back in, and in addition has many more pages with more information. It includes a DVD with actual footage of the Ponds at work. Hope this helps a little.

1 pointDennis, the 701 and 702 and 62-63 Lawn Rangers also had that style gas tank, and the 633 was Kohler powered. (It used a unique updraft Tillotson carb) The 701 and 702 were also Kohlers. In the pictures it appears that it has the separate dash plate on the fuel tank which would have been consistent with the 62 models. My money is on it being a 702 with a scrounged belt guard. They were the same part number.

1 pointI Use a solar trickle charger for boat and an electric one for tractor... Major benefit to life of batteries...

1 pointSquare drill bit and new holes! Or a round drill bit and and file if that's all you got...
-
1 pointI don't spend any funds we don't have or that I can recover with pending work, But at the same time I tell her...Babe, this will save me time and we can do more togather...its all BS cause she knows I will be in the garage more tinkering with my new toy...Then I let her drive it and all is good !! LOL
-
1 pointCan you drill new 7/16 holes directly above the existing square holes using the new wear bar as a template, I'm not sure if there is enough clearance with the reinforcement channel on the back side to clear the nut. Depending on the thickness of your wear bar, you may have to open the holes to 1/2" or square out the corners with a file to clear the square on the carriage bolt head.

1 pointThanks for all the best wishes guy's, they are much appreciated Well, what a few weeks that has been.. Very busy and the most scary life has ever been! I will try and keep this short as it's quite a long story. My Wife noticed she was getting out of breath on the Monday morning at work, he office is 3 floors up and not lift, so plenty of stairs.. She saw a doctor first thing Tuesday morning, which wasn't helpful! and then off to work.. This time she barely made it up the stairs! Wednesday and Thursday she decided to work from home as was alright all the time she was sitting at her desk.. Friday morning dawned and things were not good, my Wife was really struggling to get her breath so back off to the docs again only to be told your having a panic attack and to clam down (with a "if it gets any worse call an ambulance" thrown in to cover his *rse)! The ambulance was called late Friday afternoon! These days if you call an ambulance and it's not going to reach you for a while they have "first response" people that deal with the area close to you... As luck would have it the closest 1st response person was very close.. She lives just across the road sort of close! My Wife's breathing improved a great deal with an oxygen mask, but as soon as the mask was removed her sats dropped very fast at an alarming rate! So one very fast trip to hospital in an ambulance later she was rushed into resus to try and work out what was going on. My Wife's daughter Lisa had joined the party by this point, the feeling we both had when we were kicked out of resus because my wife had suddenly become "unresponsive" was unbelievably terrifying to say the least.. Lot's of docs and nurses running around sort of thing.. My Wife had died for a very short while! However my Wife is a fighter which kept her going.. I'm so glad.. A scan showed up she had a pulmonary embolus otherwise known as 6 large blood clots in her lungs! One blood clot buster injection later Lisa and I were told that she has a 50/50 chance of surviving the next 3 hours!! Oh, and were kicking you out of the hospital now as she is being moved to intensive care! By now it was 5.30 Saturday morning! 3 weeks and 5 days later I'm happy to say my wife is doing well.. Home from hospital, she has been given the ok to drive again, and she did some work from home yesterday for the first time since all this started.. It will be a while until she is back to work full time, but the main thing now is to work out why the blood clots happened in the first place! A scan this morning showed up that the left side of her thyroid is missing which may of had something to do with it! Oh.. Not much has been happening with Why Not other than a couple of parcels turned up...

1 pointOK - tried another tube tonight, but first thing I did was air it up out of the tire to see where the final location of the valve stem was when inflated. Once that was known, I put the tube in the tire, inflated a couple of times and all is good. Learn something new every day! I think you for your replies and my tractor thinks you, though I might make it drink some of the stale gas rather than burn it.... ;)
-
1 pointI have installed many of these and learned the hard way of some things not to do. We always install our tubes by hand with just basic tools (screwdrivers and a vise). I like all of the suggestions here, and have one more that I don't think was mentioned. I always leave the valve core out when blowing up the first time, that way if for some reason the valve stem slips through my fingers or tool, I don't have to pop the tube to get the stem back out. Like someone else advised, this also helps get the wrinkles out of the tube before I blow it up for the last time. This has worked for me!
