6 pointsTired of hooking and unhooking plows and blowers and putting on/removing chains and weights my two primary winter tractors went into the shed today. They will come down in late Nov/Dec for snow season then back to the shed to rest over the summer. The Elctro is really an now an Electro 16, needed more Hp for the blower. The Charger 12 was given to me for free and had sat in a barn for years. Cleaned the carb new spark plug and she ran great. All original except for 2 leaky hydro lines I replaced. (and the 2 stupid duck decals) She came with snow blower, and mower deck with the old style mule drive. In my opinion the 10 pinion rear end in these two horses is the absolute best thing for snow duty. The limited slip lets them really push snow. i have had plows and blowers on everything from an L-107 to a 418A and these old horses beat them all. I know they aren't as pretty as most but they are mechanically sound.. to quote Donald Sutherland from the Dirty Dozen "Very pretty, Colonel, Very pretty, But, can they fight? " These horse can fight snow

5 pointsAppreciate the information! Thanks much! One additional question. I have a 1067 (10hp Kohler) and SK-486 (16hp Kohler). Both are in great shape (start right up, no leaks, no smoke) with about 1,000 hours each on the original engines. During the summer I run them both about an hour a month. My question, is what is the best way to maintain the engines during the winter? In the past I have run them about 15 minutes a month through the winter. Not sure if this is the best solution.

4 pointsWell the weather is going to stop me from going but I have had the best day. I got my truck back from getting tranny put in. And took my girl out for dinner played my keno numbers and won 10 grand.

4 pointsI do not like the electric clutch as engagement is rather harsh, however the motor in her is a KT17 from a JD 317. JD didn't spec ball bearings on the crank and only used sleeve bearings which cannot handle the end loading o a WH manual PTO The wire bundle is to control the electric linear lift that raises the sweeper...wish it was hydraulic as the electric is slow to respond.... The M274 is a Truck Platform, 1/2 ton aka a Mule The M37 is the 3/4 ton w/winch. The M35A2 in the Picture belongs to my neighbor but I am the support maintenance for it
-
4 pointsBelieve me that was the first dedicated WH i had. Mounting that sweeper was a huge PIA!!!

3 pointsGents, Wanted to introduce myself...I started looking for a garden tractor to restore a few years ago and having no background in this area started from a blank slate. Looked at a variety of tractors and had never heard of Wheel Horse. Stumbled onto this forum and have been lurking ever since. I narrowed my search down to a manual transmission Wheel Horse and was searching every CL from South Jersey to Maine. I ended up finding a 1990? 416-8 restored by a local guy and his son. I was planning to restore one myself, but they had done an amazing job and had it for sale on CL. After a few months with no movement, I saved my pennies and ended up picking it up, interestingly, they live only a few miles from me. The work they did was meticulous and the tractor is beautiful. I have been mowing with it now for several months and yesterday picked up a 48" snow plow from a guy an hour away. I'm planning to knock the worst of the rust off and wire wheel the beejezus out of it, repaint it and have it ready for whatever this winter throws at us. Today while mowing, I had my first scare. The tractor was driving fine, and suddenly it refused to shift into either 1 or R. A quick search here turned up the "dog tooth set screw" issue and I had it back to shifting in a few minutes. So, thanks to all of you for a wonderful forum and the reams of information about these machines. I didn't have a very strong tractor bias prior to discovering WH, but now I'm hooked. Pics when I get them.

3 pointsthis is an edit KEEP SCROLLING DOWN / PICS ARE POSTED BY JRBLANKE this is an edit Well after a couple of years keeping my eye open for a locally owned Round Hood, I finally found one today located about a 40 minute drive from home. I'm hoping James can post some pics of this thing for me as Karl and I still cannot figure out what happened when Red Square had a change this past Summer. Anyway, It looks good and runs quite well in my opinion. It has a slot hitch that works! Tomorrow it will get an oil change. It has a starter/generator Kohler engine and the serial number tag on the tractor shows the number #48441 Can someone tell me what this is based on the serial number. Craig AMC rules says its a 701 because it has the double pullys on the engine and starter. I believe Craig is correct on that due to his vast knowledge of Wheel Horses that far surpasses mine. I would like to know what information the serial number is giving me. Thank you. Hopefully I can get some pics of the tractor on here somehow. Oh, and it also came with a snow blade that I will sell if any of you need it.

3 pointsI met Bowtieguy/Frank today in Springfield and he brought me this C-175 auto its in pretty good shape no knocks or smoke i know the series 1 kt17 can be a time bomb but this one seems good it ran kinda ruff at first but it ended up being pretty much out of gas after that it ran good the steering is stiff but the trans is very strong and the deck works well and i added a metal seat pan i think i might see if my brother wants it so i can get my 314H back.

3 pointsI suppose that technically this is an improper post. Maybe it will disappear shortly, but maybe not. It is about Toro, but pretty sure not Wheel Horse but maybe still ok. I'm sure that others have seen this but I'm not sure that I have... At least it's not GREEN! Bud! You out there? Another idea for you!

3 pointsMrs. Rules told me we had a few of the competition stop by... I'm assuming, to check out the 's here, who are clearly...head of the herd.

2 pointsNew member here, ricky racer. I just want to thank Scott and family for a really enjoyable day. I don't have a Wheel Horse but my father-in-law had one and used it for years and my neighbor across the street worked at Wheel Horse as a draftsman helping to design implements. He also was entrusted to take home tractors and implements to feild test. Anyway, thank you all for making a guy with green tractors feel welcome today. Rick

2 pointsWow! That was fast! Any thoughts on it as a second horse for restoration fun? Thanks much! BTW - Vinylguy - if I buy the chevy ford merc I'll get the decals from you. If I buy the WH do you know anyone who does them cheap for Wheel Horses?

2 pointsWell today was supposed to be a local steam/tractor show and I was going to take the Horse but it's been raining all day and I couldn't bring myself to take this baby out in the rain. I did get it all finished and pulled out the DSLR to get some good finished pics. Her she is! I even cut the front yard with it before the pics. Man is it fun!! Thanks for following along and also for all the members who helped me out with parts and advice. I really appreciate it! It's a tractor that is sentimental to me and the look on my dad's face when he saw the finished product more than made the hours of work worth it...heck what am I saying, this stuff is fun no matter what but it was awesome to see how excited he was about the final product. I'm glad it turned out so well and is ready for another 40 years in the family. Enjoy the pics and let me know what you think!
-
2 pointsSo that's where all those tractors are that you couldn't squeeze into your shed! Isn't having a lift the only way to go!
-
2 pointsSince it so close to home I ventured to Zag's....met up with John (Wallfish) and we wandered around. It was cold, drizzly and a bit windy and of course only a fraction of the vendors showed. I guess I would say those of you that decided to not go, you made the right decision. Mike..........
-
2 pointsNow that's funny right there!!! Like Mike said, taxes on that can't be more then $20 bucks a year. Heck you (and me) must spend more then that at Dunkin Donuts in a week! The insurance is worth keeping on it just incase something happens. If I were you I would get insurance through Hagerty or one similar. Your regular insurance is going to pay you book value which is nothing. I just checked Hagerty and the average value of a 1971 Dodge Dart is like $7000. A regular insurance company would probably give you like $300 if it was totaled! What the old adage, "an once of prevention" or something like that. Could be "Pay now or pay a whole lot later"
-
2 pointsI'll be glad to help with your restoration. I have all the manuals and parts lists for both models. Pics are easy. Good luck!
-
2 points@Al C. Love that 1067 Al, looks much better than mine but someday I am going to make mine look like yours. If you don't mind I will be needing lots of pics to see what I am missing and how it is supposed to look!

2 pointsFrom my notes gathered from folks who know! Long frames 45.5" Short frames 41.25" Mid Frames 43" 1972 to 1975 Wheel Horse 8 horse powered models had a wheel base of 43 inches "A short frame will have a wheel base of 41-1/4 inches and a long frame has a wheel base of 45-1/2 inches. The 1972 to 1975 Wheel Horse 8 horse powered models had a wheel base of 43 inches but the C-series and 300 series 8 hp models were long frames . Another way to tell is by horse power , any Wheel Horse model with 10 hp or more has a long frame starting from the 1966 model 1056 . In 1969 the last short frame model was built , the Workhorse 700 had a 7 hp horziontal shaft Tecumseh engine and three speed transmission . Any old round hood will be a short frame and all but one six speed model was a long frame (the 1967 model 867 was a short frame)" The first long framed Wheel Horse models came out in 1966. Here is a list of short frame Wheel Horses. 1961 - 701 1962 - 502, 552, 702, Lawn Ranger 1963 - 603, 633, 653, 753, Lawn Ranger 1964 - 604, 654, 704, 754, 854, 1045, Lawn Ranger 1965 - 605, 655, 855, 875, 1075, 1055, Lawn Ranger 1966 - 606, 656, 856, 876, Lawn Ranger 1967 - 607, 657, 857, 867, Lawn Ranger 1968 - Commando 6, Commando 8, '500' SPECIAL, Lawn Ranger 1969 - WORKHORSE 700 Other tractors like the 1974 and 1975 model B-80 were considered a mid frame.

1 pointI picked up a WH GT 14 Model # 1-7451 Serial # 630911 It is missing the mower deck but we hooked it up to a jump box, poured a little gas down the carb and got it to kick over. After a little tinkering it would sit an idol. The wiring is trashed but overall it seems to be in solid mechanical shape! I am planning to clean it up to use it in parades. At first, I just need to get it in good running order. I have not decided if I am going to to take it back original or turn it into a flashy custom ride. Where is the best place to find parts? Right now I am looking for: 2 Front tubes, may have to replace the tires too Drive belt Throttle and choke cables Seat pads That is about all I need to get it in operational condition. As near as I can tell it is a 1970 model. Is there some place to find the original manuals for these, or even scans?

1 pointI would place a working 312H w/deck in the 4-700$ range based on condition. Single stage blower $200 and dozer blade $150. Based only on your assessment of condition, I would place this package in the 7-850$ range. Can't hurt anything but feelings by making an offer. BTW Max...... keep us posted and
-
1 pointIt does look like a Ford or Mercury bumber or tailight. Maybe a Montego?
-
1 pointThat is a great idea. I was doing something similar. I have one of those springs that is currently used when the blower is attached. I think I'm going to do some changes and utilize the middle tac a matic because there is a little flex in the rod to raise and lower due to the length. I will post pics of the changes when complete. Stay tuned........
-
1 pointJust adding the obvious, which has not been said in this thread...in hindsight, the milky fluid, and rag show how easily... a simple fluid change would have helped diagnose the internal issues going on in this trans from the very beginning. Another outstanding thread that should be pinned...lot's to learn here guys.
-
1 pointThat's great Chris!! Its not raining here right now so I'm going to head to the show in a about an hour. Mike........
-
1 pointIf it is plastic, there are all kinds of repair products out there...Epoxy, Plastic Weld, Etc., ifjust small cracksi would try one of them, be sure to use something that is sandable and printable.

1 pointPicked up the 416-8 today. Sat in this guys barn for over a year (it shows). Guy said he ran it out of fuel before he put it in the barn, he didnt want fuel sitting in it and going bad. He put a battery in it, added some fuel to it, cranked it 3-4 times and the 16 onan came to life. little bit of smoke but that was from choking it. After it ran for a couple min's it smoothed right out. Tried the mower deck and belt started to smoke at the pto. looked at the deck a little closer and noticed straw sticking out from underneath, the blades where wrapped tight with field straw . Cleaned all that out and hit the pto...mower spins great. No noise or anything. Owner said spindles were replaced 2-3 years ago. mics. other items were new also. I did end up paying $314 for it but that did include an extra mule drive and a snow/dozer blade that I didnt know he had. Will update as I get in to cleaning it and giving it a good service. I was able to get a few pic's and will get more. It is missing a few items, 1- belt guard for main drive belt. 2- deck belt covers. 3 - floor boards (if thats what they are called on this) Will be in need of these parts. Any one with these and willing to sale, please PM me. Thanks.
