Tired of hooking and unhooking plows and blowers and putting on/removing chains and weights my two primary winter tractors went into the shed today. They will come down in late Nov/Dec for snow season then back to the shed to rest over the summer. The Elctro is really an now an Electro 16, needed more Hp for the blower. The Charger 12 was given to me for free and had sat in a barn for years. Cleaned the carb new spark plug and she ran great. All original except for 2 leaky hydro lines I replaced. (and the 2 stupid duck decals) She came with snow blower, and mower deck with the old style mule drive. In my opinion the 10 pinion rear end in these two horses is the absolute best thing for snow duty. The limited slip lets them really push snow. i have had plows and blowers on everything from an L-107 to a 418A and these old horses beat them all. I know they aren't as pretty as most but they are mechanically sound.. to quote Donald Sutherland from the Dirty Dozen "Very pretty, Colonel, Very pretty, But, can they fight? " These horse can fight snow

So I had some scraps laying around and thought how nice it would be to eliminate the wheelbarrow. So it began. The creation of a Johnny bucket.

From my notes gathered from folks who know! Long frames 45.5" Short frames 41.25" Mid Frames 43" 1972 to 1975 Wheel Horse 8 horse powered models had a wheel base of 43 inches "A short frame will have a wheel base of 41-1/4 inches and a long frame has a wheel base of 45-1/2 inches. The 1972 to 1975 Wheel Horse 8 horse powered models had a wheel base of 43 inches but the C-series and 300 series 8 hp models were long frames . Another way to tell is by horse power , any Wheel Horse model with 10 hp or more has a long frame starting from the 1966 model 1056 . In 1969 the last short frame model was built , the Workhorse 700 had a 7 hp horziontal shaft Tecumseh engine and three speed transmission . Any old round hood will be a short frame and all but one six speed model was a long frame (the 1967 model 867 was a short frame)" The first long framed Wheel Horse models came out in 1966. Here is a list of short frame Wheel Horses. 1961 - 701 1962 - 502, 552, 702, Lawn Ranger 1963 - 603, 633, 653, 753, Lawn Ranger 1964 - 604, 654, 704, 754, 854, 1045, Lawn Ranger 1965 - 605, 655, 855, 875, 1075, 1055, Lawn Ranger 1966 - 606, 656, 856, 876, Lawn Ranger 1967 - 607, 657, 857, 867, Lawn Ranger 1968 - Commando 6, Commando 8, '500' SPECIAL, Lawn Ranger 1969 - WORKHORSE 700 Other tractors like the 1974 and 1975 model B-80 were considered a mid frame.

It's really hard not to be a Notre Dame fan to some degree. After all, who doesn't like the Ireland? It would be even better if we all lived in, oh let's say, Niles Michigan where a guy can be close to one of his favorite teams...... (the look on Dukes face when he sees this )

I met Bowtieguy/Frank today in Springfield and he brought me this C-175 auto its in pretty good shape no knocks or smoke i know the series 1 kt17 can be a time bomb but this one seems good it ran kinda ruff at first but it ended up being pretty much out of gas after that it ran good the steering is stiff but the trans is very strong and the deck works well and i added a metal seat pan i think i might see if my brother wants it so i can get my 314H back.

Darn! I was going to say that! Seriously! A lot of that could come out with some proper clamps and direction pulling! It would still be there just much less visible...

Brain I have a lot of welding experience and also experience with all the machines referenced in this thread so I will chime in. Return that harbor freight hunk of junk, flux cored wire stinks without a lot of power and the proper shielding gas. Whatever machine you buy make sure it has the ability to run shielding gas, if you really don't want to deal with shielding gas look for a stick welding machine. I would recommend picking up that 120v 140a Lincoln if you want to spend less dough and keep your capabilities on the smaller side. If you want higher capacity run your 220v line and look for a 250amp or better used machine, welding supply places like Haun or Praxair always have used machines. The difference between the Lincoln 140a and 180a is so minimal I think it would be a waste of your money. Lincoln makes really good wire so I would get some of that, I think its called SureArc. We get our gases through Praxair here at work and they have a gas called Stargon its 90% Argon , 8% CO2, and 2% Oxygen, I recommend getting this mixture because with the added Oxygen it will burn hotter and up your welding capacity over just standard Argon no matter what size machine you go with. Same goes for welding aluminum if you ever get into that, we run a 75% Helium and 25% Argon mixture and its amazing how much hotter it burns then just plain Argon and that's for Tig and Mig. Like others have said with the smaller machines they seem a little more finicky with the wire feed setting. I borrowed a Hobart handler we have at work to do some beefing up on my mustang this past spring and I was having a hell of a time getting it to weld good and Ive used it a lot so I know its a good capable little machine. Well it turned out that I had the wire feed just a smidge to high and once I realized it was like a totally different machine. If the feed is to slow youll get an arc flash that will burn back toward the tip and to fast youll get stubbing and jerkiness. That little 120v 140a Hobart and the Stargon gas will weld 3/16 steel no problem and I would even think you could do 1/4. Good luck with whatever you go with and you can always reach out to me if you have questions. And if you end up with a smaller unit and then have something big to weld reach out to me there too because I could probably help you out and weld it for you considering were local to each other.

Thank you. No it has the factory electric lift that was added on by original owner. I tested it by lift myself which is 180lbs.

So maybe I should have specified my uses. I'm not starting a landscape business is excavating company. My intentions are to move some mulch, leaves, wood chips from splitting, and a little topsoil. If it were anything more I'd be crafting a regular FEL. Don't take any of this the wrong way. I do appreciate the + criticism and things to watch out for. And hey, I'm just playing within my means and enjoy tinkering. They are a warner electric lift so i don't doubt tthe durability for a minute. Not sure on the lift limit but I'm sure I will find out. Hydros would be nice but you hoarders of the 520's and such hate giving things up. Lol j/k

In or out I am still a ND sandbagger fan! < Not sure that make any sense! I guess what my statement means is ND has been a team I followed closely also in the 90's. When they went up against FSU and WON! Man that was great. But then they would lose to BC the very next week. A non ranked college. I also enjoy them for the simple fact that scholastics still come first and yet they are always a contender for a BIG BOWL GAME! RMC

So another horse followed me home tonight. This time a 1966 wheel horse 1076. This is my first wheel a matic tractor and I must say, it is pretty nice. It also came with a deck, push blade, and wagon. Wagon is pretty rusty, but he did throw in some extra parts. I even had the trailer I hauled it on thrown in on the deal and just had to pay title transfer. It was a good day lol!

I finally was able to pony up and have the proper 340 motor built for my first car (1971 Dodge Dart) that I had wanted for years. I went to see uncle Bo to pick up his dolly to bring the car up to a guy who I did a barter with to swap motors and install new exhaust etc. I then made a few more stops and after my last stop as I walked out to my truck I see some bonehead hit the side of it and decided not to wait around to tell me. Anyway today is bitter sweet. Dragging the car up in a little while to the guy's shop. Don't plan on putting in an insurance claim on this one. Hopefully by Sunday I will be able to pick up my Dart with a nice new 400+ hp 340 installed with new tti exhaust and converter... Some people have no conscience.....

Dad helped me out big time by running and grabbing this beauty for me. I have been unable to get away as preparation for the meet and greet is in full swing. I really don't want anymore, but when it is on your bucket list, you go for it. Looks to be in pretty good shape, minus the hole in the deck. I am really only going after the low production number models or ultra collectibles at this point. This will fit nicely in to the collection!

I do not like the electric clutch as engagement is rather harsh, however the motor in her is a KT17 from a JD 317. JD didn't spec ball bearings on the crank and only used sleeve bearings which cannot handle the end loading o a WH manual PTO The wire bundle is to control the electric linear lift that raises the sweeper...wish it was hydraulic as the electric is slow to respond.... The M274 is a Truck Platform, 1/2 ton aka a Mule The M37 is the 3/4 ton w/winch. The M35A2 in the Picture belongs to my neighbor but I am the support maintenance for it

The value is truly in how much you enjoy it. I wouldn't plan on reselling it as you will not get out of it what you put into it. If you do a cheap resto then it devalues it for another buyer, if you do a detailed super resto then it will be worth FAR more BUT you will probably not get back out of it what you have to put into the restore. This is truely a hobby of love. (Now don't get me wrong, there is profit to be made if you play everything right, but its decent work and often means selling for parts. Which is hard if you dont know these horses really well)

Thanks Paul, I appreciate it. I am 99% sure I am going to grab the Lincoln 140A, it's a little more than I want to spend, but the HF is junk. The 180A isn't worth the extra money, glad to hear someone else agree. I am amazed at the members here, I have had two local guys now offer to help, and it is really appreciated. I won't name the other member, he can take credit if he wants, but I'll just say again what a resource this forum and it's members are.

Welcome to red square, BUT DANGER, no belt covers. Be very carefull. Good luck. Maybe you might want to tinker with this one and use something else for your lawn service. Till you bring it up to speed. Glenn

15 minutes is not enough to get the engines warm, so it will not heat up the oil enough to evaporate and expel the fuel and water that has washed down past the cylinder. I would say that is doing more harm than good. My dad didn't do anything to his engine over the winter, but it was stored in a minimally climate controlled garage and it lasted a LONG time. If you don't use any of them in the winter I would shut off the fuel line, run them dry and pull the battery. I also fog them, but many do not and don't have issues.

I personally wouldn't want to depend or trust a 47 year old machine to a lawn service....its probably worked all its life and deserves a "light duty" retirement. I would rather have a newer machine to depend on to help me make a paycheck. That being said, your new find is a great machine to restore or tinker on and have some fun with. Keep it as a backup incase your daily tractor craps out? Maybe haul it to tractor/machinery shows to putt around on or display? Mike........

Good luck finding a fuel tank sending unit that will fit the tall oddly shaped tank on the GT-14. If you find one I would love to see this posted. I feel that a Volt meter tells you a lot more than an amp meter.

That's the joy and satisfaction of a DIY project. Design, build, test, redesign, alter and retest, and it doesn't cost any thing but your time.

That trailer will hold up just fine! My grampa bought one just like it in 1990 and its still around today. Use the tilt feature Brain its pretty handy. Speaking of trailers and welding here is a pic of the snowmobile trailer I designed and built a few years ago. Its just over 8' wide and 12' long and can fit 3 sleds. All aluminum with 5/8 marine grade PT plywood with a aluminum ramp that slides in underneath from the back. It weighed in at just 600lbs when I had it weighed for registration! You have an SUV like me so trailers are a necessity. O and as you can see it works really good at hauling horses too, and due to the addiction we all share it has hauled horses a few times.

Racinbob said: Steve, my vote goes for taking them out, win or lose. Bob, don't take this seriously. I seem to have lost my partner in crime. I set out with Steve to stir the pot and get some excitement going in here and he was going to help with that but he must be otherwise occupied. I think Chris hid all his Rock and Rye awhile back and he must have found it. It could be weeks before we hear from him again. Lighten up fellas, nobody's going anywhere.
