One weekend towards the end of September there is an event in Rockville, VA called Field Day of the Past. Antique cars, trucks and tractors are displayed. Also demos of old saw mills and construction equipment. There's lots going on the whole weekend including truck and tractor pulls. I take a truck and a few tractors up there-not a bad way to spend a weekend! Here's a few pictures. Not as many Wheel Horses up there this year. Got 'em loaded up My two Wheel Horses enjoying the sun with a few other tractors. The Sears and Allis Chalmers are mine too. There were a couple stray horses there Another toy I took up there Great weekend as always. Hopefully I will have my C120 cleaned up and painted to take up there by next year.

Got me a used airport baggage cart for a yard trailer. It is a flatbed with drop down side rails. 5 feet wide and 10 feet long, not counting the tongue. Pulls nicely.

Looks more like a paper-wasp nest, just as bad if not worse sting than a bee . . . the Bee Sprays will not work on them, you must use the Wasp-Hornet spray, and be careful. There is a guy in our area that will drive 10-20 miles to come and remove them for free, after dark --- he cools the nest down in his special refrigerator, to 33º for a few days, then "milks" the hornets, one-by-one, to remove & collect the chemical from them that really stings, a drop from each, (850 drops = an ounce), which he then sells to a lab that makes antibiotics. Guess there are dozens of illnesses that is good for. "one mans trash is anothers _____". I think it would hard to remove that nest intack.

Good evening, it's nice to be back with the Red Square forum. I had a membership many, many years ago under a similar name and I was active in a yahoo group for some time. I have owned several different Wheel Horse tractors over the years. The last one I owned and sold about 3 years ago was my 1960 Suburban 550. That was the last one to go and I miss it. I was even the proud owner of two signed "Straight from the Horses Mouth" books and I had a Wheel Horse banner flying in my garage for years. After getting out of the collecting end of it, I came upon a need for another riding mower. I always wanted a more modern garden tractor so I was lucky to recently buy a 1987 Wheel Horse 414-8 with the original 14 hp Kohler. The prior owner thought it was a 1984 but after reading a little about this model it didn't start until 1986? It has a 42 inch mower deck and a snow thrower attachment. The engine runs nice and strong and everything is original on it as far as I can tell. I used to be more familiar with some of the older models but I don't know much about the later models. As for me, I'm from MN. I love to fly, I play guitar, love canoeing in the BWCA, I restore vintage woodworking machines, I wrench on old lawn tractors once in awhile and I'm in the middle of a 1976 Goldwing project. I've finally got another horse in the stable and am looking forward to reading, learning and fixing up this great machine. Thanks!!

Hmmmm....Lets see...24x20=480x2=960 sq ft......hmmm...... too small ...can't ya go any bigger!?!?!? Triple the size means more room for tools, lifts & benches so you can have bunches of WH projects going on at the same time...maybe run three phase power in at the same time.....add a 24x 24 lean to on for parts tractor storage??? Hang on to that thought whilst I go design a proper garage and start a thread on it!

It needs a new seat but overall it's in good shape for its age. Here was how my Suburban 550 looked when I sold it.

We had this excellent pine tree in the back yard, but it was just growing to big for the space, so we had to have it cut down. So now we have room for a garden again. I put the word out, "looking for a plow", and my buddy, Denny Clark calls me and says he has one and he will bring it to the Lasueur show. Fantastic. Thanks Denny. Time for a restoration. Took it all apart and wire wheeled the heck out of it. Time for paint...primed first...used Rust-o-leum red primer and Regal Red. Put it back together and ordered some stickers from Terry Dennis. Got the decals in a couple of days. I did get to practice "Watching Paint Dry", but the video will be when I get to use it. I was looking at all the pictures of plows on this site, and I did not see one that was exactly like this...and then Koen finds a video on U-Tube that is just like this in action. I think it really is a plow that Wheel Horse, maybe ordered and put their name on it.

I am going to put what ever motor I can find in it for right now , but I still am going to keep looking for a original motor for it , I will find one someday , I have just started the search

The price of the 5xi series on the street is in the 4-digit range everywhere... If it runs, swiftly drive it on to your trailer, strap it down, hand over the cash, and drive quickly away before he realizes there is a 1 or a 2 in front of the $600. Then watch in your rear view mirror for cops... that's grand theft tractor!

Easy fix Duke....just turn the house into more garage.....

My thoughts are to post a picture first and if it's something old, you should sell it and pickup something newer to make a puller. Please don't chop and destroy if it's original.

That little horse sure needed a tail.

    Cool but dangerous for sure.

Correct. I'll drill a hole where the black dot is once I get the spring.

Would make it take longer to warm up, but not run cooler once warm.

Nice little 656 you got there. You might find it easier too find a Kohler 6-8 hp yank start for it. Everything about the Kohler will be a little easier, finding the engine, finding parts, starting it, less headaches, ETC. I have had plenty of Tecky's in my day, good ones and or rebuildable ones are out there but like Gary said, you'll be searching. When a Tecky runs nice and proper they can be a nice little engine...

Im ready! I had to run up to Ardin the other day to Peco Vac and get a couple of baggers and the cool crisp air told me it was getting close to show time again! Im hoping the boys soccer games wont interfere, but Im sure I can get them covered. How many that are coming here also go to the Ardin show?

My 523Dxi was running real warm. The indicator was all the way to the top of the green bar. I tested it with a digital thermometer and it was reading 194 at the thermostat housing. Which is not much more than one would expect at that location. I ordered and replaced the thermostat and the temperature sending unit. Thermostat was stuck open. It is running some cooler now but I have not run it longer than 20 minutes and have not cut grass with it yet. I will recheck when next I cut and post some more pictures.

The whole story is to long ta tell. Our Family is all motor heads. bikes, street rod, quads, rock crawlers. Now Zane, my sisters Kid found Grandpa's old Wheel Horse tractor in the barn. what can we do with this? he asked. So we hit the web. ya'll know what came next! Uncle Jeff we need to build a puller! I'm thinkin mild,he's 12 and wants to drive of course. So we'll read, think, dream and see what will work around here. I can see already this project will get way outta hand. LOL! And it looks like we have found the place for answers. Really nice site, The Crew

First weekend of October is only a week and a half away. Bert, glad to hear you have the port-a-potties lined up! Have you come up with a list of things we can bring along to help out? We don't want to have you doing all the work. Vince, I too am a regular at the Ardin show, generally go on Friday to avoid the crowd on Saturday.

Brian, just to add to the confusion, here is the spring arrangement on my Suburban

That's a big ol' nest! lol. Tell ya what I'd do, wssp n hornet spray, soak it...come back the next day with a coffee can or so of gasoline and soak it, the following day , remove it. I have found that gas works much better than wasp spray..

Thanks roundhouse. I used my Fluke 117. It's a $400 multimeter. I bet my life on it daily. I think it would read about as accurately as any other high end meter. I'll try to find this sensor and take it off the engine and test it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Back yard looks nice!! So does the plow, is there sun in that area all day? Gardens need quite a bit of sun basically like everything that grows
  32. 1 point
Here ya go Brian. I don't have a spring yet but the piece of wire gives you the idea. If you don't have the welded tab I've seen small eyebolts instead. As I mentioned, I'm probably going to drill a hole in the arm rather than use the cotter pin.

I went back and looked at your original photos. I didn't catch it then but the overflow tank looks like it overflowed. Hopefully the head gasket didn't go. Have you cleaned the screen and fins on the radiator? Make sure the fan is drawing air through the radiator, not pushing it. The other thing to check would be the water pump. Leave the cap off and run it until you see flow in the radiator as it warms. If you haven't changed the antifreeze, it needs to be "burped" to get rid of air pockets by raising the rear wheels up ramps or incline due to the engine-radiator arrangement.

Wouldn't the thermostat stuck open make it run cooler?

Chev, I normaly do a light compound and buffing wheel. If you do a search on here, some of the fellas like to wet sand. Its tricky, but if the paint is really dull and shot you can get good results. Very very light grit paper, plenty of water. Then buff and wax to a good finish. Nothing I have owned has been that faded out. Cept the 854 but that got a new paint job. Keep us posted. glenn

Scott- Nice boat and those motors are minty!!! Ken keeps telling me I need to find what is called a "row boat motor" like the black evinrude in the picture. BTW.... what were you doing at that auction??

As far as making new spindles, I made some for a 702 a few years back. The hard part once the snap ring groove is cut is making the bend in the right place. Drilling the hole for the steering arm was tricky also. If I were to do it again I would drill the end of the spindle like later models and tap it for a bolt to hold the wheel on.

Actually we already have a cruise set for next May to Alaska. I really enjoy cruising and if I can swing it I hope to do an Eastern Caribbean before that ( it's the cheapest market), provided Mrs. Sailor says "Okay." All of this started due to me breaking my ankle. We had a driving trip to Maine and Vermont planned but were thinking that I wouldn't be able to drive any distance for some time.

For the most part, the more competitive teams treat the first 2-3 games of the season like pre-season. Playing starters in Pre-season is just sooooo risky. everyone is quick to dismiss teams and tag teams as the Super Bowl Champs. Thoughts on the 0-2 teams Ravens - Get Cincy at Home. Huge game for Ravens......give them the edge to get their first win. Texans at home against the Bucs. Give them the edge as they are supposedly getting their starting RB back. Gaints at Home against the Skins - Giants are pretty weak this year but should break their losing streak. Lions get the Broncs at home - Somehow I expect the Lions to pull their first win out at home. But if I were betting, I would probably shy from this game. It is possible the Colts lose tonight. That would make them 0-2 and they would most certainly win at the Titans. So the Bears are my lock to be 0-3 after next week when they play at home against the now 0-2 Seahawks. Bears Fans will need counseling to get through this season.

Drycreek, first off, wellcome to red square. Sounds like you got a nice ride for a nice price, post some pics when you can. I own a 522xi with a 44 inch deck. It takes care of 2 acres, power steering equiped. This will be my first year to try out my sjngle stage snowthrower. I think its great, operator comfort is the key. Turns nice, handles nice. Other 5xi guys will chime in. Like doc said, not a ton of parts attachments out there. But that will probably change in time. Best of luck. Good choice. Glenn

That depends entirely if the original engine bought with the tractor is in fact the original engine. There's little way to tell other than the serial number being in the same date range as the tractor (actually it should be a bit before the tractor, but you get the idea). Other than that, you pretty much should go with the original if original, or go with the best engine you can, in order to maintain value. It's being restored. Then restore it to the best condition you can to get the most value out of it. To give you an example, my RJ didn't have an engine when I found it, but the RJ did have a serial number. I spent the better part of 5 months locating an engine with the correct serial number to place its manufacture date a bit before that of the tractor. It make not be the original engine to the tractor, but it certainly is the "right" engine to be on the tractor, right down to its model and date of manufacture. (I did eventually put a Schnake recoil and the correct carb bowl on the engine, but at this stage of the restore I was starting with the rope.)
