I do have some more "vintage" footage of the old tractor owned by my dad. I just uploaded a video from a home movie, taken with regular 8mm film, probably in 1964. I am the little tyke driving it in the video, my older brother Jack started it up for me. This was taken in Emsworth, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKbB4oTky2s&feature=youtu.be I'll take some current pictures of my uncles wheelhorse next and post them maybe tomorrow.

I have owned 2 old wheelhorse tractors for about 20 years now, that were originally owned by my dad and uncle, and I'm finally ready to part with them. I have questions about their value and the best approach to finding the right buyer. I am located in St. Paul, MN Wheelhorse 1: Was owned by my dad, acquired around 1961-2. I think it is a Suburban model, not sure. Engine was replaced with more current Briggs 7hp. steering wheel replaced, head light added, other modifications to go with an electric-start engine that was on it in the 70s. I'm currently trying to get this one fully functional, (I have the mowing deck) but the Briggs has no spark and having trouble getting that fixed. Am I wasting my time on the Briggs? (Will any buyer immediately yank the engine and replace it with an original 4hp Koehler?) I'm thinking this one might be worth around $300 if I get it fully functional and cleaned up...not sure if that is a pipe dream, considering it has so many non-original modifications to it? In the attached pictures, it is the one with the family around it (that picture was taken in 1963) and the one with the blue seat (picture taken 9-21-15) Wheelhorse 2: Was owned by my uncle, I think he bought it brand new around 1959 or 1960? I think it might be an RJ. It is mostly original, but also not running. I hope to get it running also. It has a mower deck as well, and original tires, I have not seen any other wheelhorses of this vintage with those front tires. I'm thinking with this one being more original with a Koehler engine on it, maybe it is worth more than the other one, though I'm not sure on that, and it probably depends on me getting it operational. In the pictures below it is one the man (my uncle) riding it and looking at the camera, with the silver fish on the cabin behind it. (I think the picture was taken in August, 1960.) If anyone wants to contact me about these I can be reached at farmerie@yahoo.com. Otherwise, I'm just interested in hearing opinions on what I should do to maximize their value and make them visible to whoever would want them the most....also wondering what I can hope to get for them.

The first attempt happened just as the forum crashed for a minute. Admins can delete it, hopefully. I got tired of renting trailers, so I finally broke down and got one of the Harbor Freight DIY trailers. Turns out they will take the 20% off coupon on it. I was surprised, they won't take it for most expensive stuff It's coming along nicely. I also bought a welder and found out I suck at it as bad as I did in school.

These were all part of a big collection I had a few years back. Hope you enjoy the pics.

If this won't work there is no hope!

Here is what I run all year. They are great in the snow with wheel weights and no chains. Mike...........

If you decide you don't want it, let me know, I'll drive down and get it.

I think the first picture with the family around it has value, at least to me! There aren't many original pictures of the late 50's early 60's pictures around, at least not as good as yours. I would never have of thought the 58/59' RJs hoods would have such a smooth glossy finish as the picture shows when they were new. Thanks for posting it.
  9. 4 points
I wouldn't worry too much about getting either of them running to sell... true collectors of these little round hoods are concerned with originality, more than anything else. As far as selling them, I think you've come to the right place, right here on once our members see them, they'll pretty much, sell themselves. Have anymore of these vintage photo's to post up here... they contain a lot of good info, lot's to learn from them...thank you for posting them.

I have a chance to buy a 520xi with mower deck and push blade for $600. I have not physically seen the tractor yet, just a pic. The seller claims there are no known issues besides flat front tire. What do you all think is this a good deal or not?
  11. 3 points
Makes me wonder if its too good to be true??
  12. 3 points
It is a great price, almost too cheap. but maybe the owner just doesn't know what he has

I plan to celebrate this Bears season by not watching a single, painfull second of them. If management doesn't care, why should I? Catch more fish, cut more wood, play with my tractors. The Cubs will score more runs than the Bears score points in October. With the first pick of the 2016 NFL draft, the Chicago Bears select...

With "The Summer that Wasn't" due to my accident and losing my buddy, Mrs. Sailor and I are going to be good to ourselves after all the recent trials and tribulations. It's a 7-day cruise from Quebec City to Boston. This is from the web, the Veendam in Quebec City where we will embark. It will feel good to be back at sea again!

Can someone tell me what year this tractor is , no motor but looks like all the parts are there , model # T656 , serial # 255638 , and what size motor was in this

Do yourself a favor and replace the chain and idler sprockets now. That thing is probably 20-30 years old. Looks to be in good shape. A few bucks now should spare you a lot of aggravation in February. I've never heard of equipment failing at a convenient time. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Are you saying that DA BEARS are going to bring in Tebow??? I JUST CAN'T BELIEVE IT. IF I SAID WHAT I REALLY WANT TO SAY HERE...I WOULD BE CROSSING THE LINE. WHAT DON'T DA BEARS UNDERSTAND?? IT IS NOT THE OFFENSE...IT IS THE DEFENSE THAT IS OUT TO LUNCH. I COULD THROW THE BALL WITH THIS OFFENSE...IT IS THE DEFENSE THAT IS NOT SHOWING UP. THESE GUYS NEED TO FIGURE OUT IF THEY WANT TO PLAY "PRO" FOOTBALL OR JUST LIVE IN THEIR COLLEGE ATMOSPHERE WHERE THEIR COLLEGE EDUCATION IS TO LEARN HOW TO TURN OFF THE LIGHTS IN THE GYM. ONE OTHER THING...THESE COLLEGE GUYS GOT THE TIGER BY THE TAIL AND THEY ARE GETTING ARRESTED FOR FELONY CHARGES...LOOKING FOR THE DALLAS COWBOYS TO PICK THEM UP?? THEY CAN ONLY CARRY SO MANY FELONY GUYS. IS IT GLOBAL WARMING??...OR JUST STUPID PEOPLE TRYING TO MAKE A BUCK AND JUST DO NOT GET IT. I AM WORRIED THAT COLLEGE AND PROS...AND HIGH SCHOOL (FOR THAT MATTER) HAVE GOT CAUGHT UP IN THE FRENZY OF "BS"...IT IS ALL ABOUT MONEY...AND SOMEBODY IS REAPING IN THE BENEFITS OF THESE KIDS. NORTHWESTERN STUDENTS KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON AND TRIED TO CHANGE THINGS IN COURT...I THINK THEY DID NOT GET A FAVORABLE OUTCOME...THEY WERE TRYING TO OVERCOME BIG MONEY. OK...IT IS A TINDER BOX, AND EVERYONE HAS AN OPINION. I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT THE MONEY IS RUINING THE SPORT...LOOK WHAT HAPPENED IN TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL WHERE THEY BLIND-SIDED TACKLED THE REF...WTF. IT IS COMING TO A HEAD AND THE NFL AND THE NCAA AND WHAT IS GOING ON IN HIGH SCHOOLS...IT IS STARTING TO HAPPEN. YOU KNOW WHAT...IS THERE A PURE SPORT OUT THERE ANYMORE??? I DO NOT KNOW...MAYBE GOLF...BUT THERE IS A TON OF MONEY THERE ALSO. NOT EVEN CHESS WOULD MAKE THE GRADE...HOW ABOUT PULLED PORK, BARBECUE...I DOUBT THAT IS A PURE SPORT EITHER. IS EVERYTHING CORRUPT??? I AM STARTING TO THINK SO.

Should do the trick. That looks like they revised the old lap band diet... to a new, improved neck band version.

It looks to be a 1998 with a 48" deck. If it runs, make sure that the temperature gauge doesn't move into the "Red." The front bumper valance is commonly found broken. Pricey to replace but it is just for looks. A deflated tire is no big deal.

Hard to beat the cool factor of a little red round hood... running a set of dual ags in the rear. If you ultimately do decide to go the dualie route... I'm pretty sure, you'll be making your's...the happiest kid on the block.

Should I be worried and look for a new gear about this or run as is?? Keep in mind this Suburban will probalbly not be a worker.... just a show piece

As Craig has said, a few current photos and a bit of information and they will find a new home. It is cool to have vintage photos and a lot of history on the . That won't add much economic value, but it makes them more interesting to the buyer. Presuming the photos are of both tractors, they are both RJs. If that big headlight resulted in a big hole being cut in the front of the hood it would detract from the value, a good hood to replace it would run $100 or more. If that is the case you may have trouble getting $ 300, wrong engine, wrong steering wheel and a cut hood is a lot to get beyond. Go ahead and post adds for both of them in the for sale section and state a price OBO and see what kind of interest you generate; too far for me to drive or I would be interested in both.

I got one of those $100 flux core mig welders. I figure if I find out I can't weld, then I'm not out much. I think my problem was the diameter of wire that came with the welder was too small for the thickness of what I was trying to weld. Bought a thicker roll today, and will practice on some scrap when I find some time. And I thought you bought an arc welder. Good luck with your flux core welder they are great to have around the shop. No, I thought I might do better with the mig. My last attempt at arc welding (as a teenager) I burned through and ruined the wagon my shop teacher was building

Once the trailer is assembled give it another coat of paint, the Chinese paint jobs don't hold up too good. Also, use pressure treated plywood, I have one that has been out in the elements for nearly 20 years and is still good.

Well, now just load it up with new to you Wheel Horses! My first welds weren't pretty either! The absolute worst welds I've ever seen were by a friend who had been welding for decades! There is NO way yours could look that bad! He claims none ever broke and I suppose if you use 10 lbs where 2 or 3 sticks should have been enough... Well, like I said, he's a friend... A few pointers, don't try to weld anything at first. Just strike and stop arcs. Then strike an arc and try to lay a pretty bead on a single piece of 1/8" or so plate. Take your time, no pressure since there is no weld required! Look into the molten pool and play with it. Build it up, then sort of pull it with you. Don't worry about welding anything! Just play with the puddle/pool of molten metal. Then try to make a good looking bead. Learn what too much heat does and then too little. Too little will just build molten metal on top of your plate. Too much will undercut and perhaps burn through. Don't freak out about burning through! Means you had a weld and lost it! Do freak out about not having enough heat! You never had a weld in the first place! Practice and expect to burn through several pound of rod! Somewhere along the way you need to learn about rods, size, amps and base material thickness. Lot's a variables but you will catch on. If you can fix PCs you can weld! You didn't learn about about PCs in a couple of evenings! Difference is that welding is lots of variables and experience. Lot's of stuff with computers is Go/Not GO! Right or wrong! Welding has lots of gray areas...

I think I'm officially ready for the winter. Found a complete 42" plow on ebay for $50. I had to drive about an hour and a half to get it but I think it's worth it. So, all in all it cost me about $65 including gas.

Download here for measurements to make one http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/files/file/30-wheel-dual-kit-1968-1969-8-0711-om-ipl-a-5159pdf/ Leave the outside tires flat so there's not as much strain on the axles I snapped a 1 1/8 axle but had dual 10.5 tires and the outside tires were inflated, plus working it on uneven ground. I like the pvc ring type because it closes the gap between the tires and doesn't allow anything to wedge in there

That HF puller is the one I use - I have successfully pulled about 6 wheels off of D's. Use the 2 clam shells with the flat side under the wheel. Also, I was concerned with boogering up the threads so I got on the lathe and made a 'custom' end piece to go in the end of the screw that would fit snugly into the steering shaft, and also leaving the nut loosely threaded on the shaft. I get it pulled down pretty tightly and give the puller head a sharp rap with a hammer, take another small pull to tighten and another rap, another slight tighten and another rap - usually on about the 3rd 'rap' it'll give a "POP" and there you are. The clam shell puller is THE thing to pull the D wheels - too bad it wouldnt work on all the other models

The tab on the side plate which holds the brake band is a different configuration on a 400 trans than the RJ-58. 400 is at 45 deg and the RJ is at 90 deg Also the pedal on a 400 pushes the rod back and the RJ pedal pulls the rod forward. The 400 trans is designed to open the belt loop for tension and the RJ closes the belt loop for tension. You can swap the side plates and clutch/brake parts. You can use the 400 pedal, rod, pulley and belt guard You can modify the arm to work with the RJ pedal, rod and pulley You can move the tab by cutting and welding Ect. Ect.

Finally got my Hydro hoses and fittings. Also decided to pony up for a welder rather than taking to someone and paying. I found it on my porch tonight. Been some years but I was certified for a while so hopefully the skill returns quickly. Decided to ante up for the dual input voltage version and settled on the Razorweld 150 after some discussion with personnel at local welding supply shop. Does flux, shield gas mug/tig and stick welding. Bought it from Amazon and got a good price. 180 less than the shops price. I called the service facility in Washington State and spoke with a fella there for 20 minutes...did the whole internet research thing and decided to bite bullet. My biggest challenge is work is keeping me so busy! Hope to get significant progress this coming weekend.

Well I made some progress this week in spite of work and family obligations. I managed to get the parts tractor torn down to frame. Degreased it tonight and should be able to get it blasted and primed in next day or two. I will lose a few days next week as I am headed to Indiana. My next step is will be to measure and fit the attach-a-matic brackets. Also take a crack and adding foot pedal hydro control in that has a factory look to it. Then I should be ready to start painting or and I am seriously considering at this point, taking it to have it powder coated. I will probably take it to get it quoted and let price dictate paint or powder coat. At the pace I am going I figure 6-8 weeks to be done with tractor. Looking like an early spring wrap up unless I go powder coat route which may also factor in.
