The Wheel Horse 420LSE Worker Story.... I bought this 420LSE number 77 late January of this year from a guy from Western New York. He was the second owner of the tractor as the first owner only own it for only 1 year. Well this tractor was used and abused by the second owner as he racked up almost 1400 hours on the 420lse never knowing this tractor was collectable and limited edition. So I get that call to come and take look at this suppose to be 420lse tractor on the coldest day of the year 2 degrees of course outside. He opens the garage and there it is 420lse all rough up and mean looking sitting there with a flat tire. I check it over and everything matches up like it's suppose to be and it came with the proper paperwork. The bonus is it came with a 2 stage snowblower. The story is he used it to cut the lawn of course and snow blow every winter. He said he always keeped it outside and never had room in the garage since he restored cars for his hobbie. The last 6 years he just used it to lawn roll his lawn. So the tractor had some dents, scratches and rust but still through all that it looked good to me to buy and take home. The funny part is I never got a chance to run it because it was so cold he couldn't even jump start it but I took a gamble. I even power washed it that night when it was 0 degrees I just wanted to get the salt off. So I decided to keep its patina orginal survivor look and did very little paint touch ups. The hood and rear seat pan I left alone they had little rust spots and scratches and the hood had a few dings. Alot of mice nest in the tractor. The deck was shot but i keeped the chrome deck wheels. The rims had rust damage because he had them loaded and they sat for the longest time. I repaired them and drained all the fluids out as i had to cut the tires off. I changed all the fluids, plugs, filters, etc. I did some wire repair and replace all the fuses. Alot of cleaning and detailing went into this tractor. Today I truly started it up for the first time and it ran awesome with no smoking or any unusual noises! It drove perfect and had tons of power. I was very pleased it turn out this good. The future for this 420LSE Worker survivor tractor number 77/200 is retirement he going to relax and become and Sunday driver. Everyone once awhile he going to pull a cart around to feel cool again. He's not going to win a beauty shows or get all the girls but he's cool looking with all his battle wounds over the years......

Hi all, This sure seems like a strange post to me but I did end up joining the 520 club! My local show was last weekend and had a guy approach me wanting to sell his. We agreed on a pretty reasonable price and both walked away happy. I have not looked up the year on this one yet but it must be pretty new with the toro decals on it. It has 630 hrs on it which didn't seem too bad to me considering my c175 has 900 now and is still doing great. It needs a little bit of work but nothing major. All the guages except tach work, however it does not want to stay running he has an electric fuel pump on it but it does not want to work right so I will be on the hunt for a correct pump or a kit to repair the one on it(if that can be done) I also am planning to reset the valves and decarbon heads like everyone says too because I definitely don't want to get stuck with the valve seat issue. It should be a good worker and is most likely going to replace the c175 for now.

I jumped out of the first 5 planes that I was ever in. And since then, it has almost always been a bad experience of sorts. This is just a too bad thing for your daughter and you...Brian...what you did is what fathers do.

I drilled mine Brian, then made a housing to collect the heat and pump it into the cab. Cab stays ~ 30F warmer than outside temp.

That is the correct belt and pulley. Do you have the belt guard on the horse? The belt guard funnels slack toward the engine pulley when you push in the clutch thus enabling the trans input pulley to stop. Actually, the belt guard is your clutch.

Especially cool because it ain't no trailer queen... has battle scars, and you can actually use it.

Well it's about as close to done as it gets. I've got to repaint the mule drive as I had the front wheels on backwards (actually they've been that way for 20+ years and I put them back on the same wrong way they came off). The wheels being on backwards causes the tire to rub the mule drive when turning full lock left. Oh well, I'll get it painted up and add the final decal. He's a some pics I snapped with my phone. I need to pull it out and take some pics with a real camera! It deserves it!!

Just happened to check Craigslist last night and saw a listing for a snow blower that had just listed 30 minutes before. Called first thing this morning and stopped by and picked it up. Seems ms to be in great shape. Can't wait to get time to mount and test it. Any advice before I do?

If you need the wire, ceiling grid wire works just fine!

You are not alone Rem. This is a common problem we have all experienced when we change our first drive belt. Logic tells us to test the operation before installing the belt guard. Just thought of another potential belt guard problem. Some of the guards have one or more belt guide tabs. If your guard has these tabs, make sure you get the belt on the correct side of the tab. The belt should ride on the arched side of the tab.

What a difference a guard makes. Clean your pulleys any way, you will get smoother starts. I have to tell you...that is something I learned here on Red Square a few years ago...guess how?

Looks good! You are planning on attaching it to the tractor, right?... If you get a clog, i think that chipper might try to become airborn towards your tractor... or even away from (with the reverse twist)... I would just hate to see something seriously damaged if the chipper tries to stop and the engine doesnt.

Steve knows Trannys. No belt guard = no clutch

If the blower is not going on a hydraulic lift tractor, you may want to pick up a lift assist spring. Also make sure you put the flag pin in the correct hole. You will find this in the manual.

I would highly recommend building a set of forks or spears. On my FEL the bucket removes with 4 pins. I built a set of spears that installs on the lift frame very easily. The forks or spears are used much more than the bucket

Got the stainless lines secure and done for now. The lines kicked my behind, it took 6+ hrs today and hydraulic fluid all over my tractor loader and deck. Oh well it's very powerful for a small loader I have a 14 ft. 83in. wide tandem axle trailer and by lifting on the hitch end I got the tires off the ground and the trailer resting on the back end.

Not aware of a tractor operator manual available. Even Toro says they don't have it. Did change an engine manual so it shows up when you search for the 512-D. http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/files/file/4287-engine-robin-dy41d-ompdf/ Garry.

Believe the 6-411 should be 6-4111 for 1968 or 6-4112 for 1969. In 1969 this was a completing kit sold at the time along with a blade.in a separate package which could have been a 42" or a 54" for the large tractors. 1968 IPL for the 6-4111 Complete blade http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/files/file/1199-blade-dozer-42in-1968-6-4111-om-ipl-snpdf/ 1969 IPL for the 6-4112 Completing kit http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/files/file/2446-blade-dozer-42in-1969-a-frame-6-4112-completing-package-ipl-snpdf/ 1968 and 1969 are the only years where the 552402 serial number fits. In 1970-1973 there was a model 6-4113 and in 1974 a model 6-4114 Garry

I an't tell for sure but it looks like you're missing the rod that goes on the handle down to the triangle part. Is there a lever on the top of the handle?

Too bad you don't have a PTO clutch on that 875, not an OSHA approved chipper but being able to disengage it would be a good thing. I agree that some ridged connection to the is a must have, otherwise the torque and vibration from operation will certainly knock the belt out of alignment and turn it into a UFO ( unfriendly flying object).

This project finally came to the top of my list when I saw the amount of blackberry vines I need to dispose of this fall. I stripped the non running engine down including valve removal. I left the piston in. Added a Vee pulley to the flywheel. Some wheel chocks and spacers to tighten the belt. I know the chipper is turning in reverse....I have put a reverse twist in the belt, and the initial test seems OK. Some concerns are the small size of the flywheel key. I have replaced the aluminum shear key with a steel key. The radial loading on the pulley end may be a problem....time will tell. Keep in mind this chipper is for vines, weeds, and leaves. No wood.

You have a 4 speed transmission with what looks like the shorter axles. If the axle that is in the trans is only sticking out like 2 1/4" that is the shorter axle and racinfool40 (Mike) above said he had them. In your picture, you can see that the brake drum is in the hole that is toward the front of the transmission. I believe that transmission did come out of a B-80 4 speed and is Wheel Horse transmission #5084. Send a PM to Mike.

My neighbor pout out his old Ariens snowblower today - I went over a knocked on the door. We talked for a bit and I found out it's a 1979 model he bought new that was "stuck". The gentleman isn't the handiest guy so he just bought a new one, after 30 years he's got his money worth from it. Anyway, I pushed it home and tore into it. First things first, is it stuck? The first pull was hard but it broke free - sweet. How's the spark plug? Old and dirty for sure but not terrible, a quick hit with the wire brush and replace. Does it spark? No gas in the tank (it was pretty gunky in there) so I just used some start fluid - POP! Awesome. I checked the blades - 2 stage - awesome again. Everything seems to spin as it should. Great, it's worth my time. Off to the store for fuel line, lunch and a game plan. I spent the afternoon replacing the line, de-gunking the gas tank basic puttering on it The line was a pita and I had to take off all the covers, only popped one bolt head - no biggie. Got it all back together finally and splashed in some gas with Sta-bil & Sea Foam in the mix (per directions for each). Pull the choke, hit the prime, turn the switch and pull - KBRoooooooooooooooom! Success! Some light tweaking of the carb screw on the bowl and it's purring. All systems appear to be fully operational. I suspect the 120V electric starter was the culprit for the original owner. Later this week I'll change drive belts, the oil and spark plug and list it for sale. 1979 Ariens 24" 2 stage blower, 8hp Tecumseh engine with tire chains. What would you pay for one that's has a full tune up?

was entertaining the idea of buying a heavy hitch bracket for the suitcase weights, but one thing led to another and i ended up throwing together a bracket out of some scrap laying around. i did it much the same way Scott did above on his. piece of 2 " square about 7 inches long for the insert, piece of 3/8 x 2 inch flat for the weights to rest on and a couple odd brackets on the ends to stop the weights sliding off and also so i can put a piece of 1/2 round rod across the top of the weights to keep them in there position. they are probably not going to move very far as they are reasonably snug on the bracket, but if i feel the need to put a rod across the top the provision is there. i also got rid of the green paint. for the time being the john deere branding will stay there.......
