Ok...maybe not Evel Knievel quality, but it'll get my tractors in and outa the shed. My old ramp rotted out and wasn't safe for a 600# plus tractor. Built this today with new pressure treated stringers and some sort of composite decking that was left over from a friends deck project. Before someone points it out, the stringers are not evenly spaced on purpose. stringer's #2 and #4 are 30" apart (just like the wheelbase of my tractors ) this keeps the weight of the tractor always over a stringer. I know this is a lame topic but hey....its what I did all day for my tractors! Mike.........

Really excited about finding this great 854 last week. Planning on spending some time this fall getting her running nice and showing the K181 some love. Planning on restoring the old girl over the winter. I will post progress pictures here as I get the project under way.

Day 8. painted the uprights and mounted some things. Tomorrow going to figure out the pump and pulley off the left side of Onan. I can tell now that it is going to be a tight fit.

Other than the gas tank I have only broke 3 bolts. I've had everything soaking for a couple months. It was so rusty I had to tear it totally down and find better pàrts. As soon as I finish my blast cabinet I will be ready to start cleaning tins, frame and wheels. I don't get much shop time and when I do I work with all the neckbreaking speed of a ruptured turtle.lol

Looks like Michigan St. is going to have the Big Tens 1st victory this season...Illinois has a shot at having the 2nd Big Ten victory this season. Hey, I was just flicking around looking for football games...because Michigan St is 27 to 7 vs Western Michigan right now and the Illinois game does not start for another 1/2 hour. FS2 is replaying the Michigan at Utah game right now...so if you want to see Michigan loose for the 2nd day in a row...turn it on. It might be a long, long time before you get another chance like this. Sorry Bob...this cigar store Indian made me do it...gave me $5.

Well, i have wanted an old truck for many yrs. now. After driving Stevebo's 49 Chevy i decided it was time to start looking. After looking at a few trucks that weren't as described I was beginning to lose hope. This 65 popped up on Craigslist last night and it was less than an hr. away. Its all original with only 64,000 miles on it and it runs mint! I bought it off the second owner and he bought it off his friend who was the original owner. It has minimal rust for a 65 and no bondo on it! pretty darn good for a truck that has spent its entire life in CT. It will need new wood in the bed and some patches on the lower fenders but that is pretty much it. I'll also upgrade to a dual master cylinder. I plan to keep it all original. I took it out for a drive around the sellers neighborhood and it runs sweet!...She has a 6 cylinder with a three on the tree...

Road trip completed. A few pics to show the 418C and Kwikway loader. Thats the 12 foot dual axle Uhaul trailer. Left at 5:00 am and returned at 2:00 pm @ 410 miles total. Trailer was a perfect tow both empty and returning with the load. nice start to the holiday weekend.

If you have a new standard connecting rod available to you you could buy some "Plastigauge" to check the assembled clearance of the rod on the crank torqued to 22 ft/lb. The clearance should be at least 0.001" and not more than 0.002" as. This should be checked at the top of the crank's travel and on one side.

I have a question for everyone , why are all the good deals and everything else away from Richmond Virginia? I know we were bad 150 years ago but come on we like Wheel Horses also.

I had to buy a trailer off CL $700,U-Haul will not rent a trailer to tow behind a Ford Explorer even though mine is a 4WD/V-8 power,picked up a decent 5x9 with 2400lb axle,D160 W/FEL barely fit,hung over apps. 6 in and had to be dragged onto it backwards,rode great and didn't have any problems but would have preferred a larger trailer.

Where is the motion control lever stuck? Does it appear to be in neutral? If you can start it, the linkage must be in the neutral position in order to activate the neutral safety switch. With the engine off, I would start by disconnecting the linkage from the cam plate under the seat and see if you can move the speed control arm. Then try moving the rest of the linkage until you find where it is binding.

Try this.... 1) remove the connection -to-engine link enough to thoroughly clean off the pump shaft. 2) find a short piece of PVC pipe to fit over the shaft and drive the old seal in about 3/8 or 1/2" or so...3) using that same PVC, push a NEW SEAL right over top of the old seal, without removing the old. The new seal should slightly recess the edge of the housing.. If you can't drive it in 3/8" or so...you'll have to pick it out. That is much easier that tearing dwon the whole thing, just to replace the seal. I suggest this because...if it works, what an enormous work and time saver. If it doesn't little time is lost in trying.... There is a shaft bearing, of course, but it is in at least an inch from the end of the housing. To drive the old seal further into the housing...nothing wrong with that...IMHO, that is. These pics are of a Sundstrand pump in a D-180 that I rebuilt a couple years ago. The TIMKEN seal 48021 for about $7 is a perfect match.

IMHO.....Use the premium motor oil that the ORIGINAL manual calls for....can't go wrong with that. Some of the hydro fluids have additives / cleaners / etc that may or may not be good for the brass parts of the Sundstrand hyro pump and mydro motor. .

Get the rod first, the c/shaft should be sized for the proper clearance. That is what my machinist always makes me do.

If I had the Margarita's I wouldn't even understand it!

Replace that wire end. All the lube in the world won't help if the voltage is too low from a crappy connector.

Hank, get some PB blaster and soak stuff long before you go near it to take it apart. It helps. Btw, looks great, you took it down WAY BETTER than I did mine, well done. Matter of fact, looking at yours, well sir, I might have to redo mine. Lol glenn

I'm with you Mel. Some people don't have the appreciation for true antique machinery. I only wish I could find some Hit&Miss engines for reasonable prices. I do enjoy the garden tractors too but I have no problem shutting them off and just browsing around. Unfortunately the garden tractors are making up a bigger portion of the field every year. As the more and more older guys who have been collecting the old machinery and Hit&Miss engines for years die off, there aren't enough younger generation picking up the interest. I fear within 20 to 30 years they will become almost extinct. At least in this part of the country. As I have been traveling all over the country for the last few years camping, I have noticed that in the south and middle states, there is still a strong interest with the next generation and I only hope it stays that way. I am probably going to the fall show this year but I'm not bringing anything but a pocket full of cash to see what I can find in the vendors area .

It can be seen in the video the starter gear is not "kicking" out. As stated above, a good cleaning and lube should have you running.

Unfortunately, your machinist should be the one measuring the crank. NAPA SHOULD have given you a more accurate measurement...carried out at least 3 digits like 1.495. From an accurate measurement, the machinist can determine whether the crank needs work or not and if you need an oversize rod. You're not the first person to find out the hard way. I was.

This site is not allowing me to load any more pictures, why is that? Is there a limit to how many can be posted? But anyhow, all the "tricks" are very SIMPLE things anybody can buy anywhere. A freeze plug will shine up and make a nice center cap in a steering wheel if yours is missing, also , a freeze plug will make a nice gas cap cover , the front wheel hub grease caps will shine up and drive on snug to make a nicer than plastic grease cap, a piece of chrome bathroom drainpipe will make a beautiful exhaust pipe heat shield. A little aluminum flat stock will shine up and really look nice on a hood's grill. Just simple , ordinary things. Oh, Walmart sells those nice little headlights for $18.00 a pair. Maybe if another thread gets started it will let me post more pictures. But, the things that I do, anybody can do. I've shared a lot of these ideas on Facebook and the guys there love 'em.

I salvaged the 551 hood and put it on my 401, we had a hood that had already been cut off that we used on his "rat rod" I'm very happy to get to know you guys here, I joined a couple years ago, but didn't spend much time here, was on Facebook Wheel Horse Junkies mostly. But , I am finding the same fellas here that I have been familiar with right along, and know some of you here at Red Square personally, mostly have met them at the WHCC show, and a few locals , too , like TT

My visit to see my grandchildren paid off. I got to spend an afternoon at Chucky Cheese with 4 precious children. One of which I have only seen in pictures for 6. years. I am a very happy grandpa. I also got almost all the transmission parts I needed. I have one gear oñ the way from a RS member. I also got a new shifter. I have new bearings and gasket ordered as well as shifter retaing bolt. And I also have a starter gen kit I received last week. I found a guy through a friend that is removing the broken screws frim the gas tank and will repair the bottom plate and bead blast it. I should be able to pick it up next week.

First paint today, top coat that is, I couldn't resist.
