8 pointsI only went to see the snowblower, but there were these two WH's just begging for me to take them home. I bought the 1257 for $100, then went back the next day and bought the rest for another $100. The 12 hp Kohler turns by hand, and has some compression, but might need work. First I have to fix an electrical connection (or volt regulator). The Commando 6 'roller' is just for parts, steering wheel & gear for the 1257 and others parts to resell. The snow blower needs to be soaked in a vat of PB Blaster. I hope I can get it to work before this winter. For $200 for everything, I couldn't resist it all. The PO started to work on them three years ago, but a young family delayed things, and now he's moving to another home. The 1257 was in the garage, but the others were outdoors for 3 years. Found in Northeast Philadelphia. Not all "finds" are in barns. Oh well, I'll just put them in line with my other 5 WH projects. The 1257 is kind of a neat little tractor. I may move it ahead of some other projects.

8 pointsWell I didn't want to buy any more machines. I am out of space and have no time to spend with them like I used to. So at the last minute I decided to grab my boy and take our 420 LSE and Jacobsen Chief to a parade/show about 25 minutes away with some good friends. As I was lined up for the parade, one of the other club members came up to me and said a fellow across the field has some Horses he wants to sell. I almost didn't go, but I have learned a long time ago that you follow up on all leads. He mentioned to me he bought one at auction a while back and was planning on fixing the broken axle, but never got around to it. I almost lost interest until he said it had chrome rims and was a special edition. So needless to say I cruised on over to his place after the parade and we struck a deal. I am glad I had my tractor money with me at the time. the bottom of the seat is ruined....but hey maybe I will ship it to KenB and have him do his magic. Also as you can see the axle is broken.....of course that will be fixed. In some ways this one is better than my first one and in some cases the first one has better parts. so needless to say #2 is now home waiting for some love. The first photo is how I got it. The last two pictures are after a quick 20 minute wash. Only 580 hours on the meter but no clue on what number this one is.

4 pointsCurrent restore is a 704, traded for this tractor from Prondzy (my son) he picked this up in Iowa from a Redsquare member. It was all in a box when Prondzy received it. To date complete motor overhaul, need fuel pump rebuild. Trans has all new bearings and a few new gears. Have purchased all new stainless hardware, decals. finishing up paint work then final assembly and bring this beauty back to life. Can't wait to hear that Kohler sing. Enjoy Thanks for looking Tom

4 pointsThe axle is splined for a few inches...the axle gear slides onto the spline...a "C" clip is placed in a groove on the end of the axle that holds the axle from pulling out of the axle gear. It is an easy fix, but it is labor intensive...you have to drop the trans and open it. Once open, you can pull out the differential and open that...examine the damage (if any)...place a new clip and put it back together. The old clip should be in the differential, not floating around the rest of the tranny. You may not have any damage...you may have some teeth broken in 1 or more pinions...maybe a bad axle gear. Any of those parts are available for not much money. This is definitely fixable for not much money. In the picture, you are looking at the end of the axle and a bad axle gear...and that pesky "C" clip. If you have a chance to pick up a 312-8 for a good price, I would not let a "C" stop me...might be able to drop the price a little more. We are here to help you through the process and find parts if you need.

3 pointsCutting and hauling logs today. Used the FEL to carry logs and lift for easy cutting. Many have said these FEL can't pick up much, well I say many just don't have any idea what these are capable of. The short 12' log is an Oak the large end is 16" the other is around 12". The long log is a Jack pine very wet. Close to 30' long.

3 pointsHi, First off, thank you for all the great info here! I found this place looking for manuals online and have been here nearly nonstop since. These things are addictive! I inherited my fathers C105, next thing I knew I had a 68 raider 12, and a 77 C160 follow me home. I'm a retired Navy guy that liked it out here in Washinton, so I stayed. But I am envious of you folks back east when I look in the classifieds, these things are scarce out here. I just did a quick refresh on the 160, thanks to the help on here. Here is a few pics from before and after. It will be a worker, and I still need to do the deck. It also has a tiller and a blade.

3 pointsBesides red square most of my time on the internet lately has been devoted to watching these mammoth machines. Fun fact they have dynoed a couple the 65hp had 1800ftlb of torque at 300rpm the 100hp had 3000ftlb of torque. I still find it hard to believe that they ran farms with them!

3 pointsFinal update on this project of which I am dedicating to my father he and my mother brought me into this world in 1964 and he left us on 9-29-14. I have always like the hood stand on the 64's and since I did not have a serial number for this one I made my own 92914 this tractor will always be close to my heart, this one is to date the best one I have restored. Dad if you are looking I hope you like this one. Will be taking this one to Pioneer Power this year and every year, as my father had come down to see us for the years I have been going, he loved to people watch and spend some time with the Wheel Horse faithful. 2 pointsI know this isn't WH, but I'm considering buying & wondered if anyone new more about it. I know the tractor is a Panzer, but the loader doesn't look like any in there pictures of Panzer's. The tractors pretty rough, so I'm looking at the loader to maybe put on my WH. Any info would be appreciated. thanks

2 pointsSeveral years ago when my bride and I were combining households we had a few yard sales to liquidate our duplicate stuff. After substantial negotiations a used dryer was purchased by a neighbor for $20, about six weeks later she said she was not happy with it so we took it back and refunded the $20. The lint filter weighed about five pounds, no wonder it wasn't working well. What she didn't know was that our son's dryer had stopped working a couple days earlier and we were kicking ourselves for letting it go for so little. Some times God answers when you haven't even asked!

2 pointsThat the trouble with printer stickers not much way to tell. At least you know the year and model. I have a 312-8 that is either an 88 or 89 even the engine numbers were painted over the only thing I'm sure about is that it's a 12 HP magnum.

2 pointsExhaust? I figured that was a parascope. The loader looks like the little brother of the Johnson Work Horse on my GT-14, Cylinders will probably clean up OK and there is a good market for PA Panzers. If you transfer it to a you will have to build a sub-frame to mount it on but it definitely can be done.

2 pointsThe fuel tank, hood, dash and a few other things are different on the 754. That 654 looks nice and personally I'd save it and keep looking for what you need on the 754. How about some pics of the 754.

2 pointsDepending on what you decide to do for the cab, a suggestion would be, to have (2) sets of doors. (1) that would be used for summer with a "mesh" type lining, the other (1) for winter with the "vinyl" or some other material. RMC

2 pointsThere are some people that like them, but in general I think they are less popular because the horizontal engine versions have many more attachments available over a much wider range of years, and are far more widely available. Not to say that verticals are not good at what they were designed for, they just changed relatively often so attachments are specific to the era in which it was made and were considered to not be made as strong. Specifically people seem to burn up transmissions faster.

2 pointsWell thought I should probably give an update on this one, its been a while! Motor and trans are pretty much completely assembled. I sent another batch of parts into get zinc plated so when i get them back they will be completely done. Also finished up the belt guard and heat shield, and picked up a NOS steering gear from bill jenkins at the show. I'm planning to make a new tie rod and then will have the steering issues worked out. Got the frame blasted and any rust pits filled, also cut off the foot bar and am going to weld a new one on. As far as the hood I didn't want to damage it blasting it because it was in pretty nice shape so I built an electrolysis tank, this is my second attempt at one of these, first one didn't work at all and this one kind of worked. It eventually did take off what needed to be removed but I spent an hr with a putty knife scraping the paint off and it was in the tank for almost 10 days. Hoping I can figure out why my tank isn't working right so if you have any advice I'd be glad to hear it. I used a 55 gallon drum, 6 anodes all wired together with 8 gauge wire, used a 12 amp charger and used the 1/2 cup to 5 gallons of washing soda as I have read. I will beadblast the hood carefully in my cabinet now that the paint is gone and it should clean up nicely. So as far as whats left on this tractor I just need to get a back set of tires and find a good steering wheel for it, finish up the frame and hood stand, and the hood. Hoping to get it done for scotts meet and greet but not going to rush it. wheel painted engine mostly together guard, shield and my new steering gear frame ready for the foot bar to be welded on hood after being in the e tank my e tank setup bought a new set of 3 ribs for it a couple of weeks ago and trans all finished up

1 pointAfter hours of internet searching and researching, I got the wheel horse bug! I started looking for our old family tractor and thought I'd find another one. It was an old 66' Cub Cadet. I found a few on the internet, but after researching about the tractor I found out that it may not be the best purchase for me. What came up mostly was the love of the wheel horse and I became hook and starting looking for those type tractors. I found many across the state but it is almost impossible to view all of them due to vast distances. My top three were a 64' 1054, a 67 1057 and a C 100. After thinking it over I decided on the C 100. It was well taken care of and should provide a lot more life I'm in the processes of cleaning it up and doing some modified painting of certain parts. Basically tune up stuff. Mower deck needs some holes patched, but it does seem pretty clean. The plow is in great shape. Best of all, it came with about 7 various manuals and brochures for viewing .

1 pointIt will be fine. I don't know the limit of those cylinders but you won't hurt anything by pushing them to their limit. There is a pressure relief in the spool valve so if the cylinder reaches it's capacity, the excess pressure will bypass. I bet it can handle much more than 26 extra lbs

1 pointIf this is the tractor that you like and it is all there (not missing a bunch of parts) then I think you did very well. The Tecumseh engines tend to need a carburetor replacement if they have been sitting very long but you can get a new aftermarket replacement on Ebay at a reasonable price. Do a search on here for H60 Tecumseh and you will find lots of threads about the engine. God luck and keep us posted as you go along. Remember,

1 pointEverything stated is true about the differences between the verticals and horizontal Wheelhorses but the vertical shaft WH's were also over-engineered too. Very heavy compared to the machines made by MTD with brands on them like John Deere and Cub Cadet at Lowes or Tractor Supply. Far superior to the MTD made Wal-Marts. I was shocked at how heavy the mower deck was on a 200 series from the late 80's early 90's and the deck on my neighbor's 270H. And I have to admit that his 270H mows faster, maneuvers quicker and has a better finished mowed result than any of my mowing garden tractors. (416-8 with a 42SD, 417-8 with a 48SD and my 310-8 with the 36SD). When you think about how much we mow verses tilling, plowing, snow-throwing, front-end loader use, etc, I'm going to buy a newer, (90's), hydro-WH lawn tractor to just do mowing. Nothing wrong with them if you know what they were made for and don't abuse for what they weren't made for. That is a nice Commando and a starting price of 350 to 400 bucks is good in my opinion. They just aren't as collectible as the garden tractors are. That seat is collectible though!

1 pointone more thought. Put a jumper wire across the terminals of the ammeter. Do the lights get brighter. A faulty ammeter could also be the problem

1 pointI really think a multimeter should be on your tool list.... A really cheap one less then $10 would be good enough. In the mean time we are sort of grasping at straws. How old is the battery??? More than 4 years I would suspect the battery... A real scientific test. Turn on the head lights when the engine is not running. observe how bright they are. After starting ar the lights brighter?? f so the charging system is trying... Edit...aditional tought...Is there an ammeter or voltmeter on the machine????
