I just bought myself a 16th birthday present and it isn't a truck its an rj35, I have been looking for one and asking around shows for awhile now and am very exited to have found one In this good of shape but I am not that familiar with the rj's yet, what do I have? from what I have learned so far its a late '55 to early '56 and is mostly complete except for a belt guard,cast steering wheel,reverse pulley and air cleaner. it came with the on/off switch and throttle cable, I cant wait to start up on getting this going!

I just completed a hub conversion on my 312-8 with 520 front end. Being unable to find 520 front wheels, I decided to go with trailer hubs. I could not find a good write up on the swap, so I am posting this for anyone who wants to do this swap. All parts (minus tires) came to about $100, so the conversion is around the same price as a set of clean 520 rims. Parts List -Trailer Hub Kit, I bought this off Ebay From Elgin Trailer Parts, This includes 2X 1000lb 4 bolt trailer hubs, bearings, 1" x 1.25" seals, and dust caps. (Fits BT8 1" spindle) Cost- 57$ shipped -Wheels, I ordered 5-3/8 x 8 rims (standard for 400 series). A big benefit to trailer hubs is that they accommodate a wide variety of rims/tire sizes. These hubs use a 4 x 4" bolt circle. Cost- 32$ shipped -Spindle Washers, 1" x 1.5" flat washer, 14ga or 18ga. I bought these from lowes but These can be sourced anywhere. Qty 2 needed. -Hub End Washers, .75" x 1.25" flat washer, 14ga or 18ga. I bought these from lowes but These can be sourced anywhere. Qty 2 needed. -Bronze Sleeve Bearing, 1" ID x 1.25" OD x .5" Long, I bought these from Mcmaster-Carr P/N 6391K281 Qty 2 needed. -3/4-16 Slotted Lock Nut, Mine were missing. I bought these from Mcmaster-Carr P/N 95030A270, Qty 2 needed, Sold in 10 pack. Installation is straight forward. The pictures pretty much sum up the steps. The bearing need to be hand packed with grease before assembly. Install the inner bearing before inserting the seal. The hub nuts are not intended to be torques very hard. Just snug them up and install the correct size cotter pin. The hubs are very smooth and solid. I am very happy with the results. Thanks, -Justin

Personally, I like the idea of an all day buy and custom build, not just the assembly of a stocker. Anyone can do that. No matter what, someone will end up with a great start to a one-of-a-kind machine!

Well Craig, that's another interesting idea.... What about this as a Thursday event? Also, some of you mentioned that this is something that you would not do, or would be interested in watching.... the real question is can we get 2 teams established to do this? So post here if you would be SERIOUSLY interested in actually being in or leading one of the teams (because that's really the only way this works). Saying that you would is not a commitment, just to see if this would fly. In any event, the teams would need to be established before the show to insure what Bill talked about doesn't happen, 'cause no way do I want to compete with ANY of you on a build let alone Bill, no one want's to raffle off a bucket of bloody parts from me

Here's hoping... we're adding another day to the show to allow for this to happen.

Karl, This was a subject that was on my mind to speak to you about but we didn't get enough time together. Years ago at the show we tried to get teams to put back together a model 656 and see what team could do it the quickest, sort of like at the county fair were a group of guys rebuild a model T in 10 minutes. Well what happened was nobody wanted to attempt this project at the show. I had a model 656 taken apart (except the engine and transmission) with the parts laid out. What ended up happening was Ed Mayhew and I put the tractor back together with taking challenges from the crowd as to just how fast we could do it (and a whole lot of heckling too). Times of 1/2 hour to 45 minutes were figured but it did take us only 18 minutes (tractor running and no power tools). AT the Florida Flywheels Show I attempted to build a pulling tractor from parts found in the flea market and enter the tractor in the pull ........... I got close but the cost was too high and this with no hi performance parts. I ended up borrowing weights and putting them on my 854 for the 1,000 pound class, with me on the 854 and borrowed weights we weighed in at 600 lbs BUT we still beat a John Deere in the class ! Fabrication takes a torch, a welder and a engineering mind with lots of time. Wild Bill

Hi everyone and thank you all for the warm welcome, Im not real good on computers so please bear with me, I would love to post pictures but will have to wait for my son bert to help me I guess Im better at milking a cow then working with computers. He lives 35 miles from me so generally I see him on weekends,We look forward to a meet and greet and appreciate any advice or suggestions. It would be a RedSquare vote only (hey, we gotta get something out of it too ) and when we come up with the rules, it will include NO PAINTING because not just the overspray, but there's enough exhaust fumes don't need to add paint thinner to that as well. Let me think on this for a little bit, and start to put something together. The theme will work out perfect custom theme and custom builds. Well, let's see... I did have the Cheese Grater hit the wheelie bar today.

The Solex carb on my D250 started leaking gas past the needle valve a couple of days ago. I decided to make an adapter and put a carb off a Kohler 22hp instead of fixing the solex at this time. I had a carb already which is why I decided on that carb. I will probably order a kit for the solex and rebuild it just in case I ever want to restore it to origional. This is the Adapter I made today.

September 11-12 is the fall Mentone show & swap meet

Hey guys, Long story short, my uncle has a Ford 8N that he got from my Grandpa. It has seen better days, but it runs and drives, it just doesn't have much power. i am going to do a compression test this weekend, but I am thinking its just tired. My question is this: How much do you think it would cost to have someone rebuild the engine? Also, how much would it cost if I were to rebuild the engine (I would still have to pay someone to do the machine work). What are the best bang for your buck engine rebuild kits? I would love to either rebuild the engine, or have it rebuilt as a surprise for my uncle.

The scrapheap idea is a good one, each team could get one part from it and attach it to the tractor prior to sourcing another part from the heap. Contributions could be made at any time by anyone who desires to. This would allow a team's supporters to salt the mine, but the other team could rob it first. That could add a bit of excitement.

I have been using the gunk brand carb cleaner and been very happy with it. Peels the paint right off of it and any gummed up areas in the bowl / carb. We will see how long it holds up. Have also heard of good things from berrymans carb dip.

If the time frame and judging determines the winning team. Why not raffle off both tractors one each day. Proceeds to help support the next year build.

The trailer does have a brake hitch so when the pulling unit slow it activate the brakes and my land is mostly flat. It will take pride of place. The wheel horse tractors is not well know down here, when I asked the old boy in the area no one had heard of them, there loss. Thanks again and I will be in touch soon. Tony

With all the rain we have been getting progress has been not as fast as i'd like it to be. So, I will be taking the boat to work and work on it real early in the morning and late at night in a 7000 square foot warehouse that is empty. Shoot, I might even just sleep there.. I do have the bottom repairs done and three coats of red done. The sides were sanded all the way down and 8 coats of varnish applied, Might do a few more coats.. Topside was taken down and one coat of white applied.. Topside will take a bit of time as there is quite a bit of masking off to do around the parts that aren't painted. Also need to repaint the inside and some varnish work there as well. Then, its off to the upholstery shop!

I am a board member for the WHCC. I can't speak for them as a group, but I can bring it up to the board via telephone and let you know the response. Since their only involvement would be getting a free tractor to add to the raffle, I can't see there being any problem. I know that they don't want any voting or awards at the show (by WHCC members) but if RedSquare wanted to do something on their own, and stay within their own ranks, well.... How the members of RedSquare pick their teams, etc, is up to them. The only other thing I could think of is that if any paint is going to be sprayed, take it out to the field to do that. We certainly don't want any over spray flying around! On a personal note, since I am a member of the WHCC board, I will not be able to participate in the contest. I don't want to raise any issues about "conflict of interest" , and I also have to be available at all times in case something comes up that needs handled at the show. It sounds like a fun idea! I'll do my best lobbying and I'll let everyone here know when I get an answer.

Yup, Bill is a great guy and stands by his word. I grabbed a 520hc off of him a week before the show and at the show I bought a 48" snow plow from him that looked like new almost. Being so close to Bill has started to effect my bank account. Seriously though, its nice when I need a part like a hub and I can go grab one. Thanks Bill! I grabbed a bunch of maint. stuff like filters , headlight buckets, clutch springs, even found a filter for the 520hc which I now know that the filters is the same size as the onan 24hp motors. I also came across a nelson muffler that was like new. Not a spot of rust on it and got it for twenty bucks. The neck is cracked but so what. A few minutes with the welder and it will be like new again. Couldnt believe knowone else snagged that up. Sorry didnt get to meet more of you. The girlfriend wasnt feeling so well and we had to get going to let the puppy out , he was happy to see us!

LOL, was surprised even after the 400 came home with 1 less tractor then I went there with. The truck was pretty full, we ended up with 12 transmissions and 4 or 5 engines. Sounds good Mike, too bad it wasn't sooner!

Craig- Tell the misses that I appreciate the video and Brennan will too in the future I am sure. The funny thing is Brennan check the oil early that morning and said hey dad the oil is brownish/black and we should change it. He carefully drained the old oil and then re filled it. Later that day he just happened to have to change the drive belt and did it with the assistance of Vin. We got home and he decided it was time to make his rat rod 551 shiny like his buddies at the show. We are in the middle of this......

I was amazed at just how well the kids did with driving their Wheel Horse. Before driving through the cones I wanted to test their knowledge of operation and for me to check for mechanical problems of their Wheel Horse. Each child got a different discussion about the tractor they were operating (next year a group rules of the road class may happen) since all types of Wheel Horses were operated by the kids. A child with a 953/1054 was taught to look for out and make sure nothing is in their path that might get run over by the taller tractor. Any kid riding a mid engine RJ or Suburban series was warned against letting the clutch out too fast as not to pull a unwanted wheelie. Kids with hydros were told to use the foot brake first then make sure the lever is pulled back. Any tractors that had wide wheel weights I instructed the kids to make sure they had enough room when making a turn on their Wheel Horse so the weight will not hit any thing. During obstacle course I watched each kids body language too make sure they were not in trouble and to see what sequence they operated starting and stopping procedures in. It was good to have the parents there too supporting the children. Any of the kids who was in the class and then drove in the parade got more attention as after I talked to them about their Wheel Horse I raised their wrist to show the world the red band they received for passing the course ! I would also like to give a BIG THANK YOU to my assistant Jo Marion as she was a big help with this project. I am proud of all the kids who took this class ! Wild Bill
