8 pointsIn the five years since I got my first horse I've collected a few WH implements / attachments but those of a horticultural nature have not really attracted me as we have fields laid to grass for grazing and I wouldn't be popular with the rest of the family if I turned an area in to a playground for plowing, tilling etc. As a result I have acquired just the usual 'boy toys' of a dozer blade and mid mount grader together with grass related stuff like a roller, aerator and a bagger. A neighbor though bought a field next to one of ours and is in the process of turning it into a small holding type arrangement. He already has some chickens but has some more animals in mind for the future along with growing 'organic' produce. He already borrows a horse from me to keep the grass down but the fact he's looking to turn some of it into a growing area made me think potential WH PLAYGROUND!!! (as you do) Long story short, made a little road trip along the coast today to pick up a cultivator only to do a deal on a rotavator / tiller while I was there as well. The mid mount & trail behind cultivator combos are pretty rare here in the UK, in fact this was the first I'd seen for sale since getting into WHs and this one has seen very little use since new and obviously dry stored for years. So much so that it still has its ID tag stuck to the frame unlike so many of these stuck down ones that go missing. Based on the ID 7-1722 it appears to have been new somewhere between 1969 - 1974. I don't think the serial helps to date it unless anyone knows different. It also has a WH decal that I haven't come across before which is rather nice. Anyone know about these? The tiller is also in very nice shape - it's been used, but not many time I'd guess and the blades are still nice and sharp. It also has it's ID tag - model 7-1252 ser 134453. The model indicating 1975 I think so I'm guessing the guy that originally bought both of these started with the cultivator then realised he really needed the tiller as well or they were both purchased in 1975 ish. Anyway, I was well pleased with the day's haul when I'd got it home.

8 pointsJust thought I would share a few pictures of fishing on the Big Lake. The first one is looking east from Waukegan Harbor. A very hazy sunrise. Looking back toward Waukegan, abut 3 to 4 miles out in 45' of water. Fishing poles are set. We caught 11 cohos today...these are about 2 to 3 pound first year fish. The good eaters. They will be 4 to 6 lbs in another month. This cooler is 5 feet long. What a nice day.

4 pointsI think I posted this info a few months ago, but will post it again.....(you need to decide which size of friction disc you need)...if you remember, some PTO's have riveted disc and some have bonded disc? Rather than pay the 70 bucks that Toro wanted, I started searching for disc material....I found a company in Tupelo, MS that sold friction discs for slip clutches found on agricultural equipment (brush hogs and related PTO driven equipment) Company: Bearing & Supply of Tupelo PO Box 3243 (837 Senter Street) Tupelo MS 38803-3243 (662) 840-8099 or email addy: tmccully@bstupelo.com I ordered # TOL-FP6530...$12.72 each.....I ordered (3)...shipping was 5.00....tax was 3.13....Total $46.29 I ordered the brass rivets from Toro......drilled holes in the PTO bell and friction disc (countersink em')....I liked the outcome! I would suggest you call them first (ask for Terry McCully , the manager....a good ole boy imo) because they make several different sizes; Now you have heard my 2 cents worth and I'll go back in hiding! (in my Horse Barn out on the back 40) or at Royals ballpark!!

3 pointsLast weekend was the 4th time we have met. This time at Newby Hall near Ripon, there were 25 entries from as far south as Brighton and as North as Edinburgh. Heres some of my pics

3 pointsI don't often post photos relating to military vehicles (one of my other hobbies) on RS but when I saw this at the first show of the 2015 season I thought it might attract some interest on the other side of the big pond. At first sight I thought it was probably a 'fanciful' resto but it turned out to be authentic. Officially designated Chevrolet 15cwt. (3/4 ton) General Service Van, the chassis and running gear were produced at the GM plant in Oshawa Canada and shipped along with an engine in a separate crate to other British Commonwealth countries (hence being RHD). This one was assembled at the GM-Holden plant in Perth Western Australia where it was fitted with Holden's one piece coupe cab all steel utility body. It's been through a very high standard ground up restoration to the original spec which included the original engine, gearbox, axle, brakes and suspension all being rebuilt. The bodywork is in Forest Green, the color of the home service in 1945, and has been given the markings of the 9th Australian Division, 2/7 Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery. My vehicles are in matt green so I'm spared having to work to this exacting standard (thankfully). Andy

3 pointsThanks Callum. We have a couple more possible options for high speed testing that are worth looking into. But no rush for the high speed stuff, best take my time and get WN operating good to start with. Evening guys, today's "to do" list looked something like this.... Find out why the fuel tap is leaking.. Fill diff with oil. Finish the wiring, it's about 90% done. Finish the prop shaft.. About 50% done. Bleed the brakes again to get the last of the air out. Warm the engine up and change the oil. Set the front end up. Get WN off the bench.. Go for a test drive Well, I didn't quite make the test drive deadline today, but getting very close.. Due to a measuring problem I had to make another sleeve to join the 2 parts of the prop shaft together... For once I can say the measuring cock up wasn't down to me but measuring calipers.. Nigel will vouch for that as well! Getting the engine running again was fun.. The spark at the plugs which was there yesterday had vanished today!! After lot's of searching and ing I traced the problem down to the run/stop switch which had decided that the run position just wasn't an option any more! So sorting those two problems kinda killed any chance of a test drive today But there's always tomorrow The amended "To do" list.. Find out why the fuel tap is leaking.. Fill diff with oil. Finish the wiring, it's about 90% done. Finish the prop shaft.. About 50% 90% done. It just needs welding and fitting. Bleed the brakes again to get the last of the air out. Warm the engine up and change the oil. Set the front end up. Get WN off the bench.. Go for a test drive With WN off the bench it only seemed fair that I rolled her outside for a few photos.. For me... This one really hits the spot

2 pointsHi all, I am a wheel horse man at heart but I couldn't pass up on this cool little machine, you don't see them very often over here. It's a January 1963 Original, complete with three-point hitch. After a wash and parked next to my C-120 It needs some parts and a good service but I have got it running and it runs sweet. Are there many other Cub owners on the forum? Tom

2 pointsRecently had a 1974 C160 join the herd still need to change the fluids and replace the rear tires, they look like they are original but only hold air for about an hour. Came with a decent 36" rear discharge deck.
-
2 pointsNow that is funny right there. I say that all the time. People really do not look close that the frame of a "restored' repainted or whatever you want to call it. They will look much closer at the tins. They will look real nice with new decal. Heck I may even be able to trade Jason this machine for his NOS Raider when I am done Frame was primed with high build primer and first coat of valspar IH red with hardener and thinner. Needs at least one more coat.

2 pointsLike this Mike... currently, the only one I can find on my clean desk here.
-
2 pointsOk Steve, back away from the computer. You may need to go fishing some more!

2 pointsMy first and only, a '89 416-8 that I bought brand new. Went through the 42 SD deck shell and the Onan motor. Now has a Honda. Used for mowing 2 acres and snow blowing. Bought a new pickup the same year that's long since gone.
-
2 pointsDo you have any of the parts for the throttle/choke? I was luckier than some and had the back piece, top plate and one so-so lever. I made two new levers from a piece of flat stock using the remaining original as a template. The top plate was a mess but only pitted on what used to be the top. I cleaned it up and used the smooth underside on top with a decal that Terry (Vinylguy) made. The knobs are from Glen Pettit. Both of those guys are in the vendor section here. Terry modified the decal to just have 'Suburban 400' on it because the serial # was gone. If you're missing everything it wouldn't be real difficult to make everything

1 pointThe fender came off the mounting bracket - or the bracket came off the fender - either way the air gap made life difficult. Today I fixed that. I cleaned the parts up and set to work. I drilled out the holes for the #10-32 machine screws, I had to drill out the fender washers too. I used ny-lock nuts instead of split washers - turned out nice and clean. The fender is in very good shape and I plan on using Herculiner on the underside when I get ready to do the mower deck. The bushings at the pivot point were gone so I used the cap nut trick I saw in here - turns out 1/2 was fine - opening the end was a bit of a chore but between drilling, punching and chiseling off the end it came out clean. I'm missing one of the rubber buttons up front and there's some paint gone because the bracket scrapes the frame - If anyone can point me to a source I'd appreciate it. Oh and I found my steering wheel cover - just needs a new decal as the old one is unrecognizable - I call that a small victory. Thanks for looking Sprocket

1 pointSome time ago, and I can't find the thread, a question was asked: "How many tires and batteries do you own?" So I think it's a good time to dredge this subject up again. You might be surprised at your own answers. Here is the criteria. The tires must be pneumatic (inflatable). They must be non-highway tires, so you can count your car, truck, or highway rated trailer. Tires that you can count can be on your Wheel Horse Tractor; Any cart you pull behind the tractor; other brands of tractors; snow blowers; tillers; pressure washers; leaf vacuums; generators; etc, etc, etc... Batteries must be used on outdoor power equipment as well. So, to get things started, here is my count; 416-H 4 tires, 1 battery 416-H 4 tires, 1 battery B-60 4 tires B-100 4 tires, 1 battery B-100 4 tires, 1 battery Commando 8 4 tires, 1 battery 857 4 tires, 1 battery 701 4 tires, 1 battery 3 Bath tub carts 6 tires 1 Agri-Fab cart 2 tires 1 Husky cart 2 tires John Deere 4 tires, 1 battery John Deere 4 tires, 1 battery Troy-Bilt snow blower 2 tires Generator 2 tires Mig Welder 2 tires Yerf-Dog mountain tricycle 3 tires Yerf-Dog wagon 2 tires Carftsman handtruck 2 tires Cyclone Rake 2 tires Wife's garden cart 2 tires So, my total is currently 67 tires, and 9 batteries.

1 pointLooks like a decent day "in shallow water," Steve. I'll never forget hosting a number of co-workers (ironically from Maryland) when I worked for AT&T. I took them down to the lake one day just south of Waukegan. They expected to be able to see across to the shore of Michigan. They don't call them the Great Lakes for nothing! I would love to go Smelt fishing on Lake Michigan and Walleye fishing on Lake Erie again someday.
-
1 pointCould have guessed but decided to look that one up to be certain. It was the tactical marking of the 9th Australian Infantry Division - all very Aus having a platypus and boomerang!
-
1 pointYour best bet is to measure the shaft, cut it off the wheel just below the hub, and drill out the shaft portion. The rest of the dowel pieces will come out fairly easy then. Replace the shaft with a new 3/4" rod cut to length and the two through holes drilled for the dowel pins. The correct engine for the 400 should be a K91-31388A, But the K90 is a good engine for the RJ-58/59. This may be helpful too: http://www.mywheelhorse.com/modules.php?name=docs2&do=show_doc&id=2

1 pointgood timing, I had just looked up the bushing p/n the other day and was going to go in search of an appropriate sized (less expensive)alternative to the toro ones.

1 pointMaybe the questions to ask would be can you keep em all aired up and charged

1 pointto Redsquare! I used to be able to hide them right in front of her face because all the little round hoods look the same to her. I'd just tell her I moved them! I'm from Leicester MA, near Worc. and will also be at that show so hopefully see you there!

1 pointSince I woke up at 3:30 am today and could not fall back asleep I went out back around 5:45 and got the 12' Alumacraft cleaned up using steel wool (course and then fine) along with a degreaser. It will be headed up to my in law's place on a lake in upstate NY. It will stay there so when we go up all I have to bring is a small outboard to be able to get out and do some fishing.
-
1 pointWon't ever be this big! This was my Grandfather's place, and the garden that he kept for about 45 years! My 416-H was his, and it tilled this every year from '94 through the '04 season. Thought some of you might like to see this! Pic 1 is the whole property, in pic 2, my Grandparents are standing next to the garden. That area in the middle was the strawberry patch!
-
1 pointSpent a little time this afternoon pulling it apart and cleaning it up. Will do a refurbish on this one. I have one for show so this will be clean with new paint, decals etc. It should come out pretty nice and be very presentable. Here is how it sits now. Tins will be sandblasted the rest will get sanded and primed.
-
1 pointThe 704 I bought last year is coming along nice Bob ! I am posting some pics of it. I put my early wheel horse mid-grader blade on it. Craig: Both the tiller pieces are wheel horse original tiller pieces. They must have been used a lot as the center one does have a slight curve to it from use! The back bar is suppose to be straight but I did not correct it. I am posting a pic from June 4, 2015 after cultivating was done.

1 pointDid you check the float adjustment...both up and down?? Are you getting good gas flow through the fuel pump?? Great pictures James. If it was me, I would get the $20 E-Bay carb and give the carb you have to Richard to rebuild. I don't think you want to throw out that original carb. Besides, you can't have too many Tecumseh carburetors on the shelf.

1 pointI didn't quite make my Friday deadline for a test drive, but things are looking good for Tuesday Brake reservoirs fitted I thought it might be handy to have something solid to bolt the seat to, so I added some extra angle iron to the fender pan frame. The brakes are now working.. Here's the master cylinders all plumbed in.. The blue pipe is air line hose.. I did test to see if brake fluid would eat it away or not but sticking an off cut in a pot of fluid for a few days.. It didn't so I used it Front and rear brake line splitters fitted.. It took a few hours of fine tuning but the strange system does exactly what I want it to do... Only a little air left in the system to get out and the brakes will be done
-
1 pointTry an easy-out on it. Easy-outs have left hand threads and it may come out easily. If that fails, you MAY have to drill it out, then retap to fit a slightly bigger diameter zerk. The zerks are soft and should drill out easily. Just be CERTAIN to get all of the drill chips out of the new thread hole.
-
1 pointAs a rule wrench size is 50% larger than the thread size but there are exceptions. 3/4" thread = 12/16" plus 50% or 6/16" = 18/16" = 1-2/16" = 1-1/8". Garry

1 pointMy First is a C161 twin 8 speed which came with a 42 inch deck snow blade chains and wheel weights. Traded a John Deere Lx188 48 inch straight across. BEST trade I have ever done!!!! Bought new blades for the deck thinking I could keep up with the 8 yards I mow. I spent 8 days in the Hospital for foot injury and while I was there it rained for 6 of the days and the grass got tall, took me over 5 hrs to mow, Had to mow the yards twice just to make them look good. So I took the deck off and going to use the C161 with the blade only and to move my Trailers around.

1 pointMore pics of the 1961 Wheel Horse 701 with the two piece cultivator set before she went to work!

1 pointI started this clean up and repaint at 9 this morning and wrapped things up at 5 pm. I removed and stripped all tins to bare metal, primed and then painted them. I originally bought the decal kit for my 520 but I came to the decision that the 520 was too clean to repaint. I cut out the 520-H on the decals and put em on. i could care less that it doesn't say 417-8 on the hood, I know what it is. All I have to do is install some new running board mats and put on the new rear lights. I'm pretty happy with how it came out.
-
1 pointLets clear something up. The only real difference in the 195 and the other C's is the lower steering shaft ,front axle and tie rods and frame. All the sheet metal is the same, as with all the hydro linkage and entire hydro/trans. The motor is just a K series twin. Any Kohler with a 1 1/8 crank will bolt right in with no mods, even if its a K magnum all you do is install the right ign. and change the arrangement of them on the ign switch. If the PTO goes bad just put the standard WH one on and your back in business. The mule drive is the same as the rest, the pulley is just spaced out for the belt to clear the hood. The only thing that is hard to find, like almost nonexistent is the rear pto kit. Plows for Ds come up now and again. As for the tiller its a from a D too. The deck is a Ariens, any Ariens dealer can get the parts except the hanger itself, heck you can get the 60in. deck shell brand new for under $250. The 48" is the same exact deck as the rest, I went out and checked, same as the others. And yes I had a JD 400 besides being hard to work on and the weirdo power steering setup well to say the least left something to be desired. While the standard WHs didnt have PS oy hyd ports, their montra was keep it simple stupid! There is no other brand out there where the same parts or attachments fit the same tractors 40 yrs with just a kit here or there. Or in the case of the 195 only some parts from the 40ys will fit and the others from 9 yrs of production. My rant is done
