Thanks for sharing all of that Mike on this weekend where we remember. I think we have about 25 U. S. flags flying in the front yard.

Got the Muffler on today. It looks and sounds great. One more Hurtle is to find out why it doesn't charge. Hope to talk to the electrical gurus at the show or maybe post a thread in the Electrical forum.

Groundhog and I drove over to E La Saturday to check on a couple CL advertised D's. Nice young man was trying to get rid of some of his grandfathers 'stuff', consequently he wasnt real up on terminology. He had a definite '78 D-200 and a '73 18 Automatic. I bought the 18, hesitatingly giving him $300 cause it looked rough, been sitting out for many years. I already have a D-180 and a D-160 and I do love those brutes, so along with just wanting another one I have to think about those Sundstrand drives failing at some point. Have become pretty familiar with the D family, but not so on a 18 automatic (is that the proper name of one?) Got that brute loaded by the hardest what with the bypass valve frozen solid and the rear wheels locked and the fronts going flat about as fast as we could air them all this while a heck of a rain storm going on and the Ross steering with about a full round of slack in the wheel --- (Ah, the joys of getting a new horse!) Got it running over the last couple days - strange wiring, with safety switches kaput, and frozen linkages, etc, etc Backed it in and out of the shop a couple times and seemed OK, but the steering was too wanky to drive. Then tackled the Ross -- boyoboy is that thing a booger to get out! whew! I already had a kit and thats the easy part, so after about 17 skinned places on the arms/hands I got it back in and WOW it steers like a dream! So now I can drive the thing and I am VERY surprised. that thing runs like a dream, no smoke, rattles, or shakes and the Sundstrand seems to be quite good - that certainly made the $300 look a LOT better, Its still rough, lots of rust but hey whatauexpect in a 41 yr old machine? Also offsetting the $300 I got a complete K341 - complete - wires, solenoid, air cleaner, etc, for $125 (and it turns freely and has compression!) Im tickled with that (I love that bad a** 16hp) Also got a really nice complete 42" SD deck for $100. Still in negotiation on the D-200 but it dont look too promising, I told him $300 on it also as its in comparable condition as the 18, but dont look good there.

So my job has me traveling often and one of my "worksites" is Pearl Harbor. Been there maybe 15 times but never had the time or was with other folks who had already been and didn't want to go again to the Arizona Memorial. I just got home today from a 3 weeker so I had a couple Sundays off and was alone for part of the time so I went. I am so glad I did!! I'm not a museum guy and if I'm in one I usually breeze right thru.....but at the Arizona I spent almost 4 hours taking it all in....the movie....the boat trip...the memorial...the museum...and the grounds. They open at 7am and only have a limited number of tickets per day so I was there bright and early at 6:40am and I was still a 100 or so deep in line and when 7:00 came there were probably 400 people behind me!!. I got my ticket for the first showing of the movie which then leads directly to the boat to take you to the memorial. At the memorial the first thing you notice is the smell of oil which is still today (after 74 years) leaking slowly out of the battleship. You can see it coming up and then hitting the surface and quickly spreading out. Getting there early meant the water was calm and I could see a whole lot more than you would if the water was disturbed by waves. The feeling out at the memorial was somber and there was no loud talking, screaming kids and no one yakking on their cell phones....it was a very respectful crowd. There was a tour guide who was full of great stories about the Arizona both before and after the attack. It was interesting to learn that Elvis Presley was a huge contributor to the Arizona Memorial project! Of course I remembered my camera...here's a few pics (and two selfies....I gotta learn to smile). Mike............

Used the Commando 8 to pull the Carolina Skiff project out into the sun. Last fall I decided to scale down to ONE boat. I sold my 23' Trophy WAC and my 15' Grumman and bought this 19' Carolina skiff in Jan. Much of the winter was spent rigging it for crabbing and fishing in the Delaware Bay. It cane with the 70HP Johnson. I added the mount for the 9.9 and painted both motors. Added rod holders, front seat, cleats, wash down system, front roller for pulling crab pots, spare tire, float on bunker guides ,Lorance chart plotter, Hummingbird fish finder,Garmin GPS. Will launch tomorrow at Cedar Creek , Delaware.

I guess that settles it Mike! I will bring the 1961 Wheel Horse 701 instead of the 1958 RJ. I am only going to bring one tractor this year -no trailer hauling this time!
  15. 1 point
Those are an "add on"....and not original to a wheel horse 702.. and personally, I hate it when people drill into a vintage hood to add lights like that. otherwise NICE tractor!!

Now the dilemma is what to do with a high dollar investment like that! Keep it just like it is and drool over it every once and a while, or put gas in it and drive it around. You could try to flip it and maybe make a few bucks. Either way it's a lot of cash sitting there (that's why I got rid of my Senior). Nice piece! Good luck with it!

Where your figer is pointing there is a tab going forward into a slot. That tab is spot weld or was to the vertical portion of the stand. You could just push it back together and put in a bolt and nut drilled through the center of the tab.Getting it welded up would be better but would most likely involve stripping the stand off of the tractor. If you keep using it like it is the spot weld on the PTO side will most likely fail at some point.Luck,JAinVA

Also had a C160. An awesome little beast. At first I was fooled by its small size but it gave everything you could expect from any other 16hp Kohler. I dont know if youve had one before this here beauty but you are in for a treat. Mines not as cherry as yours but it a worker and it sleeps outdoors (Barn is too full of projects already )

I have found that new rebuild kits coming from China are notorious for sticking float valves. I don't know what the answer is since even Kohler brand kits are now made in China.

I wouldn't expect a lot, between $2-400 tops, depending on how it runs, condition of it's attachments. Remember this sports the dreaded Tecumseh power plant, couple pictures would help.

My boys and I, now grandsons too, like to hang out in the barn. Talkin' tractors, great deals on old but worthy "machines." We laugh watchin' folks purchasing a Deere at Lowes or a Cubbie at Home Cheapo. A waste of $$ in our opinion. A neighbor purchased an old Bolens I hadn't been using, loves it. His BIG box store thingy failed every cutting season. Our latest two projects an Allis Chalmers and a Panzer reek of engineering. We like it that way! Mike, you are right about the universal respect the monument receives, several hundred people and you could hear a pin drop. That is one of my bucket list items I had the honor of checking off last year. Thanks for the great pictures.

I bought it, starts and sounds good. The deck is real clean, it needs front tires and a good going over but I think it is a nice rig. Plow and snow blower came with it and a book with parts list.

Ouch!, youre asking me to use my memory - of which I seem to have less and less of! Seems like I would get to the shop and check it from overnite, or maybe even after a few hours. Since I had already begun to made 'dents' into the 'tar' with the previous attempts, seems like it went pretty fast after the lacquer treatment. Since that one I have done 2 others with much less crud in them, going straight to the lacquer thinner first and they both cleaned up rather quickly.

Well, since I had to tow you in TWICE over the past yr. I figured you owed me one.. This is one of those laugh now cry later type of deals for you, I can almost GUARANTEE it that you will be at the end of my line sometime real soon. KARMA. I might even pretend not to see you waving me over just to make you suffer a little.. I'll make sure to always have my camera handy for that special Kodak moment.. Now, the motor that konked out is a 1926 Johnson 2hp. I completely went thru this motor over the winter and then I shined it up. It hadn't been run in decades... She started easy and ran very well but when I shut it off to make some adjustments I couldn't get it refired.. It happens, I always expect to have to do additional work after taking out a motor for the first time in so long but for a motor that is 90 yrs. old I was very pleased, matter of fact I will be taking it back out in a few days...

My dad bought an 84 i think C-105 from a WH mechanic in 1988 or so. (I was two). Mowed the grass and pushed lots of snow with that tractor. Then engine went the second time and he bought a heavy duty green one. I asked him to hold onto it for me for when I had a place of my own. 7 years later I bought another WH just for the engine to fix my dad's but I haven't stopped buying them since! (and I still have yet to get his running!)

These are built using some Briggs mufflers purchased from Maple Grove Distributing in Galveston, IN. A couple pieces of black pipe, a little welding and some time on the mill, these fit, looked and sounded close to stock. Its been a while since I made these but you might try and contact MGD and see if they still have them in stock.
