It's scary to look at. Build some extensions or you'll have more than your knee to worry about

Well I saw someone using one of these on a thread this winter and while at HF yesterday one followed me home. I have 3 GT 14's I need to start tearing down and start reviving and I thought that this might make life a lot better on my knees, If any of you have Osgood-Schlatter, you'll agree that any opportunity to avoid knee to ground contact is worth the effort. So it barely fits and is at the limit of the lifts capacity but I think its going to be very effective. Especially once I get the tractor on jack stands and get the wheel s off. Thought I would add some pics in case anyone else is considering one of these.

Groundhog and I drove over to E La Saturday to check on a couple CL advertised D's. Nice young man was trying to get rid of some of his grandfathers 'stuff', consequently he wasnt real up on terminology. He had a definite '78 D-200 and a '73 18 Automatic. I bought the 18, hesitatingly giving him $300 cause it looked rough, been sitting out for many years. I already have a D-180 and a D-160 and I do love those brutes, so along with just wanting another one I have to think about those Sundstrand drives failing at some point. Have become pretty familiar with the D family, but not so on a 18 automatic (is that the proper name of one?) Got that brute loaded by the hardest what with the bypass valve frozen solid and the rear wheels locked and the fronts going flat about as fast as we could air them all this while a heck of a rain storm going on and the Ross steering with about a full round of slack in the wheel --- (Ah, the joys of getting a new horse!) Got it running over the last couple days - strange wiring, with safety switches kaput, and frozen linkages, etc, etc Backed it in and out of the shop a couple times and seemed OK, but the steering was too wanky to drive. Then tackled the Ross -- boyoboy is that thing a booger to get out! whew! I already had a kit and thats the easy part, so after about 17 skinned places on the arms/hands I got it back in and WOW it steers like a dream! So now I can drive the thing and I am VERY surprised. that thing runs like a dream, no smoke, rattles, or shakes and the Sundstrand seems to be quite good - that certainly made the $300 look a LOT better, Its still rough, lots of rust but hey whatauexpect in a 41 yr old machine? Also offsetting the $300 I got a complete K341 - complete - wires, solenoid, air cleaner, etc, for $125 (and it turns freely and has compression!) Im tickled with that (I love that bad a** 16hp) Also got a really nice complete 42" SD deck for $100. Still in negotiation on the D-200 but it dont look too promising, I told him $300 on it also as its in comparable condition as the 18, but dont look good there.

I am 69 and had to go in for the lower GI today, first one, and was worried, no health problems, just got a new DR. and she said it's time. Ate breakfast yesterday and nothing until this was over at 1 pm today. The cleanout and fasting was the worst part, added about $10 to my water bill after that. Checked in the VA at 11;00 and into a room, stripped to just a gown and socks, into a bed, hooked up to a monitor, BP 117 over 68, IV in the back of my hand and into the room where the procedure was done. Got a shot in the UV and the next thing I know I was back in my room. Every thing was clean, no problems, wife got the printout of the procedure. So off we went to Golden Corral for some well needed FOOD. Now it's time to get everything ready for our first pull Sat. I was worried about the unknown but now kinda excited.

Well I am guessing there will be a Raider from Larry in Warsaw, MO (hauling help request from last week) and then there was the aforemention (by Frank{bowtieguy}) 50 hr 414-8 of the KC Craigslist

I just finished cutting the lawn with my 2007 315-8 and my 1987 212-6. I cut the large part with my 315-8, only has 161 hours and is like new. I trim mowed with my 212-6 which has 899 hours and still runs excellent. After i was done mowing i cleaned them up and got all of the grass off of them. These horses love to eat grass.

Not quite sure how this subject fits into the category of Restorations, Modifications, & Customizations, but nevertheless, it's good to get a clean bill of health. My 5-year "probe" is due in July, and for those who have not had it done, if you are near 50 or older, get it done. It's no big deal. Early detection is the key to nipping a deadly disease in the bud.

I'm with you on what would cause temp differentials from the exhaust valve to the intake valve. Not sure if those differentials would be that great between intake and exhaust once the engine is warmed up and running at full throttle. I can see it on a lot of start/stops. Other food for thoughts are the John Deere issues with the Onan's. They had a lot of valve seats go on their tractors also. Also note that generators, (the Onan Gensets), didn't run at 3600 RPM. They are governed at a much lower RPM. My place of work has a Miller Welder with an Onan. No#2 cyl had low compression to the point it was having trouble starting. Probably a valve seat issue! Never opened it up as it isn't part of my job and they needed a dependable welder so they opted for a new one with the old as a trade in. The heat buildup issue with the Onan has other factors worth considering. The biggest is our ethanol loaded fuels. If you get a carb that starts to gum up and run crappy, a lean mixture can cause a lot of heat issues without the owner ever realizing it over a long period of time. This alone is bad but this and the WH air flow issue combined is real bad. The Onans need a lot of cooling. So much so that the air intake on the flywheel side grabs gobs of grass while mowing and deposits some of it in the cooling fins. If they aren't blown out and taken apart once and a while, you get hot spots. The oil filer is located in the rear cooling tins that: 1. Blocks about 25% of the total area under the tin thus blocking air flow under the tin on the very cylinder that is already susceptible to over heating in the WH configuration. 2. This filter is hot and putting out more heat in a trouble spot. 3. With the blocked air comes more grass and mower debris that settles in this area over time. I think you have a contributing theory but I believe it is a lot of things that contribute to the issue. I think there are more intake than exhaust seats that fail. It may very well be the reason why the intakes fail..........first!

picked this up at a auction at our local tractor show.,all 4 rims are a total loss and just crumbled apart, the deck is solid and i just got it running today.it runs pretty good and the tranny felt pretty good too.

Wired it up... then, put some fire in the hole here today. Was still too bright outside... so I had to drag it back in the basement to get the full effect.

NICE!!!!!!! It always seems like the pile of leaves (or whatever it is) is always a load and a HALF of the size of the trailer? You probably solved some of that issue but how much you wanna bet the pile will STILL some how end up being a load and a HALF of that new size. Or, maybe this just happens to me! I don't understand the principles of how that works out but somehow it does!

Part 1 I rewrote the parts list from an 18 Automatic Parts Manual because it contained errors, and I wanted it to basically be used as a simple checklist. I also began {term used rather loosely} to make what I am referring to as an Assembly Order List. Essentially a list of how I think my tractor should be reassembled in a logical order. In this first part I will commit to complete steps 1-23. The edge trim on the axle openings is my addition not OEM. What I started with, Pics 1-4. The frame, Pics 5-8. Assembly Order List, 9. The front axle, 10-11. Grease fittings, 12-13. Axle Pivot. 14. Washers, 15. Lock-nuts, 16. Hex-Bolts, 17. Edge trim, 18-22. Thrust washer (upper), 23. Thrust bearing, 24. Thrust washer (lower), 25. Left spindle, 26. Left "E" clip, 27. Right "E" clip, 28. AO page 1 Complete, 29. Next update may be awhile as I need to have both some machining and welding done before I can complete AO page #2. P.S. The frame pictured is not original to this tractor, but it is from an 18 Automatic, even though this frame is not equipped with the seat mount spring. I removed it, in order to add a hydro fan. The axle and 1" spindles are from a different tractor as well, and consequently Item # 17 and #22 both have part #'s for the 3/4" "E"-Ring clip. This should be replaced with the part # for the 1" "E"-Ring clip. I just didn't have that part # readily available when I made the AO list. This list also has the part #'s listed for the 3/4" parts in steps 2 and 13-21.

Greetings fellow tractor enthusiasts, I thought I'd chime in and introduce myself. I finally talked my dear Father out of his WH 520H (and 44" Snowblower, and 42" mower). This fine machine has a whopping 180hrs on it. I blew snow all Winter in style, with the only problem being the safety switch under the seat not wanting to depress in cold weather. This week I've been detaching the blower and attempting to resurrect the mower deck. It's been outside for yrs and not used in a very long time. I seem to be missing the front belt pulley and faceplate to complete the connection (I have him looking for it). I look forward to learning and sharing info here on Red Square. Thx

After going through 3 canopies since 2010 , I am taking delivery on a new professional model 10' x 15' red canopy this year. Cost is almost 3 times that of those I've had in the past, so I hope to get a few more years out of this one. Any contributions to the cause will be rewarded with some of Mrs. M's cookie bars.

Hi all, it suddenly occurred to me that i haven't actually posted anything in this section of the forum, so I though i would share my horse with you as i have only done so on the restorations modifications and customisations board. The is my first horse and its a 1972 A-800 ranger, I am currently in the process of customisation called 'project agri-800', what I'm doing here is turning a lawn tractor into a garden tractor. lights, stack, Uni-drive, front spindle to 4 lug hub and agri style rear tyres are some of the modifications I have either done or doing to get there. the main modification is obviously getting rid of the peerless tranny and fitting a Uni-drive i and in the process of doing that now. once i have finished this project I will have a one-of-a-kind heavy duty garden tractor that I will make various implements for such as a harrow, reel mower and various other bits. anyway, here are some videos from my youtube channel, i was only driving around the small garden here but the tractor will be used at the allotment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2mjMdbKd3U&spfreload=10 haha, opening line in this video "bet you didn't know i had one of these", it was one of my first videos of a wheel horse on my previously stationary engine and workshop related channel, I would hope being a red square member would suggest i own a WH!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpqluu0pfY0&spfreload=10 and some pictures for you all: thanks for looking, I hope I might have let some of you see the A series in a different light, callum

I bought it, starts and sounds good. The deck is real clean, it needs front tires and a good going over but I think it is a nice rig. Plow and snow blower came with it and a book with parts list.

I have painted a motorcylce tank with rustoleum and wet sanding, ended up at 2000 paper. Looked really dam good. It can be done, but you'll need some extra coats of paint so you don't burn thru it. Good luck.

I have one of those 17 cu ft yard trailer/carts from the big box stores and that thing is worth its weight in gold for doodling yard refuse, but I've always wished it had a bit more capacity.... Sooo since I have had it several years and it was needing a 'freshening', I figure while I've got in the 'repair shop' I might as well try and add some to its capacity ability. Of course since it was needing paint it naturally was gonna some RED! put on it! I went to the H depot and looked at what was available, wanted something that was treated because the cart has to live outside and settled on round nose decking, a 2x6 for the uprights. and 6 of those handy support thingys. Construction was pretty straight forward - a drill, handfull of deck screws and a few lag bolts and --- by golly the dang thing looks pretty good! (Course that RED paint is what makes it look REALLY good) Think I just may have to get me a couple 'Wheel Horse' decals from Terry to top it off with.... Thought you guys would like it too and maybe get ideas for your cart....

I agree wheel-n-it its nice to see the vertical shaft ones get some love (as you can tell i am a owner of one too) i think they deserve some love too and its great others agree, and your tractor is so niceS, Simplicitys can be nice too! its why i was attracted to the wheel horse style tractors big heavy and built to last. p.s i also have a 1968 lawn ranger i am currently restoring (very rare in the uk!) james

Callum, I am happy to see someone restoring and modifying a verticle shaft driven wheel horse. Looks to me like you are on the right track to make this a nice little worker!

So look, I'm workin my butt off on this thing ... got my hauler 99% ready, but the Horse still needs some hours, specifically from my welder. There in lies the problem, he's got health issues. Hopefully he will be back in the game soon, as I need about a full day on the aluminum tig to get this done. Hopefully, it will be at the show, but honestly it isn't lookin good at this point. Fingers crossed. Run?? Oh hell yea, it runs!!! Sounds sweet too!!!!

It is my understanding the Raider 14 along with a few other NOS tractors were purchased from a dealers estate by Rick. The Raider 14 along with a NOS Commando 800 and a NOS Raider 8 with a NOS grader blade now reside in my horse barn. I took the Raider 8 to the Arendtsville Pennsylvania and the Evansville Indiana shows last June. Many of you saw it at these shows and at my Meet and Greet get together in September. Many pictures posted in the Wheel Horse Herd section of this forum under Mid Mo Meet and Greet. I will be having another Meet and Greet in Sep. of 2015 also. Hope to see some of you there. We have a great time talking horses and buying and trading parts and tractors. There will be an update in the "Wheel Horse Herd" of this forum on the Meet and Greet. Larry

Today I was able to get moving on back filling the foundation after the crew removed the forms. I am just about out of the dirt that I dug out of the hole. I will be calling for more fill to be delivered this week.
