Another guy who was all gung-ho and used to hang out here is doing exactly what your thinking about. He actually made quite a few guys angry since it kills the "hobby" of Wheel Horse tractors for anyone within a 400 mile radius of him. No longer can the average hobbyist scroll thru the local ads and Craigslist looking for a tractor, instead those in this guys area have to jump with the speed of light and get right over to meet the seller before the other guy swoops in a buys it. Or just wait till (the other guy) buys it and then gives it a bath and an oil change and jacks the price up. As a "hobbyist" tractor guy I'm against it, but this is America and you are free to do as you please. Mike........

I bought an older 40 inch Mid-Mount Grader Blade several months ago and also bought a lift link from one of the Red Square members that was making the early model lift link (#5678). I finally got around to installing it on the 314 Wheel Horse after I had removed my snowplow. The Mid-Mount Grader Blade attached fine on the front attach-a-matic but I was not really sure how the lift link was to be installed and which hole in the rock shaft on the 314 needed to be used to give the lift link the ability to have downward pressure with the lift handle. I finally realized it need to attach to the third hole in the upper rock shaft lift (the same hole the trunion for the chain link the holds up the T bar used to lift the mower decks). Easy to access thru the front panel on the 314 justy remove the two Phillips head machine screws and remove the trunion pin and install lift link for the Mid-Mount Grader Blade. My grader blade also has a nice feature that a previous owner installed - a welded steel plate/tab with hole for a hitch pin to place it in the rear slot hitch of a Wheel Horse . Here are some pics of this on the tractor.

I've been watching this from afar. You started out by saying "a friend" wants to start a WH business. By your third post it's clear that you're the so called friend. So right from the start you've been less than truthful. Please correct me if I'm missing something. In all seriousness why even bother asking everyone's opinions? Unfortunately you've made your bed through a series of short sighted choices the past few years. These are the lessons in life which unfortunately are often learned the hard way. Moving forward I can only hope you've learned from those experiences. Congratulations on your new home. Now take some time and get settled. See how much time you actually have for ANY new activities. I was banned from the other guys website, but if I were on your shoes I would sit back and closely study their business. I have my opinions, but I cant tell you for sure if it is a winning or loosing proposition. I will tell you, you can learn a lot by watching someone else do it first.

I posted in the thread - what's in your mirror about this tractor. I figured since I am going to be doing some work on it I may as well start a thread on it. This tractor was purchased from Baerpath this past weekend. He bought it was and never got around to doing anything with it. The lower wiring harness caught fire and the PO shut it off and put the fire out. He then sold it and I ended up with it. I have been looking for an xi series tractor for a while but the current owners had them all priced at what they should be (too much for me). Knowing this one needed work Baerpath gave me a good deal on it. I already replaced the burnt wiring with Fireman's help yesterday and I did a nice job soldering all the connections. Jeff looked up the parts that were needed and I ordered them. They will hopefully be here by the end of the week. I had some free time today so I started to pull the sheet metal off to take a look at what the underside looked like and get it cleaned up. Well here is what I found... After a lot of cleaning with the pressure washer I was able to get it nice and clean. I plan on touching up some areas on the frame to stop any rust and while the tins are off I may just have to sand them down and paint them. I think I will really like using this one so it will by no means be a show piece rather a nice clean worker. I was told the decals are NLA so I guess Terry may have to draw these up....

We picked up about 7 inches of very heavy wet snow today. So much in fact that they had to shut down nearby Interstate 80 for about a 40 mile stretch. It just dumped snow for hours over Southern Clinton County! And you know what..................I didn't get one tractor out! Notta! Know why? Cause I don't give a damn anymore about snow! I have had way too much seat time plowing, blowing and scoop n dumping! Nope! I shoveled 10 feet of sidewalk from the porch to the garage! Didn't even put the truck away tonight! Didn't want to drown the garage again with melting snow! March came in like a lion and left like a T-Rex in menopause! Tomorrow is April fools day! It's a new month and maybe, just maybe.......................I'll see something other than white in my yard! Hell I may even grease a mower deck or two. Even sharpen those thingys that spin under them that cuts the stuff that used to stick up and grow green in my glacier, I mean yard! AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

What Sparky said.... I think that trying to make a profit buying and selling wheel horse tractors is not a winning proposition for anyone (buyer or seller). Don't get me wrong, I have been there and done that. I typically made a profit when I used to buy the "package". I would keep the tractor and sell the mower deck, plow or tiller that came with it. I did that for several years and it helped me pay for and build my collection. I have also done worker restorations and would go through the entire tractor (oil, filters, ignition, key switches, belts etc. etc.) Once done I would be happy if I made a profit at all. Like Sparky said it is up to you. My suggestion would be to expand your search of tractors you are looking to flip. You will be surprised at the market on a $300 to $500 craftsman rider. Many more buyers looking for those. I think that is where you may make your money.

I have seen a lot of pro's and cons on those units. I have one and it works great, however it did not start out that way. As stated above if it has not been caulked, do yourself a favor and take it apart and caulk every seam with clear silicon caulk. If that has the ac/dc converted light fixture in it replace it with a light system of your own. Hook a shop vac up to it to keep the dust cleared away and it will blast really well for you. I put an axle and pneumatic tires on mine. Made some wheel barrow handles out of 1/2" galvanized pipe I had laying around so I can move it any place I need to.

Eric, trying to guess what's wrong with this stuff is one of my favorite things to do. I am not always correct either, but I have guessed right once or twice. That is why a lot of people on here think I know what I am talking about. Just another thought here...when you push a horse in neutral...obviously, both wheels are turning in the same direction. This means that you are rotating the differential housing and turning that mushroom gear, but not the input shaft. This is why I think it is the mushroom gear bearing. If that bearing is bad, it would cause enough slop to do what is going on. If there is a thing that bothers me here...it is the low hours on the horse. Chris...we used the screw driver trick back in the service station days to listen for a bad lifter and identify it in the 6 and 8 cylinder engines. It works like a champ.

That Hedgerow find (DB 2D) in Lane's post would scrub up nicely...too good (still) to leave to rot. If you want to read the history of DB and the 2D Tractor model, here is a good link- http://www.glyn-coch.com/Main/Tractor.htm

I was told of this tractor a couple of weeks ago called the guy and then life got in the way and didn't get back to him until this weekend. After talking to the gentlemen found out he was the original owner, maintaining it very well and kept it in a heated garage all it's life until recently when it had a problem (probably because it caught feelings over him buying a new zero turn) and needed repairs. He decided to sell and after making what I thought to be a ridiculously low offer brought it home to join the herd. It has 1176 original hours and the tractor and deck are in excellent shape as seen in pictures. The only problems are seat is torn and it needs a wiring harness (anyone have a harness hanging around?) and some minor tlc.

I usually help friends find horses for mowing and what not. Its amazing at just the simple stuff like battery, tubes, oil, filters, plugs, carb cleaning, and belts adds up so fast. And thats the list for something that needs no major repair! I think I find this great deal and drive an hour to pick it up. Then put all the maintenance into and wonder about this great deal I found. If your making a business out of it, then you also need to cover the cost of your time. I question the profit to be had but if you can make a go of it. All the power to you.

Mike: I pulled my RJ out of the garage today and wanted to see if it would start after sitting all winter in the garage! It was a nice blue sky/sunshine and 59 degree high day in Greencastle, Indiana. The old 1958 Wheel Horse RJ started on the second pull of the recoil on the 4 HP Kohler motor!

I bought the d-200. The guy let me test it againt a tree on pavement and it was very very strong. The hour meter reads 309 hours and it burns no oil. But the fuel pump was giving me trouble but got that figured out. It is pretty nice. Here are some pics.

Take a couple of weeks to think about it. Give yourself a "cooling off" period. Sometimes after a little thought, what seems to be a good idea at the time might just change.

The really nice thing about this tractor is no body has messed with anything at all. And everything is original. It has no dents that I have seen yet. Thanks so much for all the help everybody, I am sure you will see it on here in the future.

Here are some pics of mods I made to my blast cabinet.. I used my chop saw to cut grooves into the handles so that they would accept the angled metal above to keep the handles from pushing on through while moving it. I also used the threads on the pipe (handles) for what should have been galvanized cap fittings, which I didn't have in the shop so I compromised with what I had so they can't pull thru. My light is a simple flood light with outdoor box and lamp holder. Make sure you have the plug on the back that is removable so you get a negative pressure inside the cabinet while vacuum is running or you may suck the sides of the cabinet in and compress it like squeezing a beer can. I run mine at 90 psi and it works with all kinds of abrasives. Send me a private message for my phone number if you have questions. I would be happy to help if I can.

You know? arguing it here isn't going to improve any business you venture into. Just do it and don't seek the approval of others. Attitude is half of running a business and from what I have seen here Im and already questioning whether to do any business with you. I know you don't need my approval, just pointing out what Im seeing.
  30. 1 point
True but since the noise is present when pushed in neutral would bust the theory of the belt. Im with stevasaurus
  31. 1 point
Thanks for the video. The slop you have when you were shaking the wheels at the end is normal. When you were turning the wheels by hand and had no noise...all that is actually turning then is the axles and pinions inside the differential...not the differential itself....so those axle bearings are probably OK. If I had to guess at this point, I would guess that the bearing under the large part of the mushroom gear is the culprit. The bearing cap between the input shaft and the right side axle. Try listening there. If it is louder there then other bearing locations, that is most likely it.

I would check the brake and brakeshaft bearing... The knock is occurring multiple times per one wheel revolution, like its on a gear that's further up the drivetrain. (That.s not to say it cant be the wheel bearing, but just something else to check).

Jason people will always be mad that you have more money and better connections in the end. People love wheelhorse because they can do whatever they want with them. So do whatever ya want Jason, I know your tractors are a little rich for my blood, but living near Jason I have no problems getting the tractors in my price range. If you wanna save and sell old horses, go for it Jason!! I would love to check out the shop sometime

Steve, If you would come out of that basement once in a while you'd know I don't watch ESPN.It's the Weather Channel or the Hallmark Channel! And I whined because you got all the food and cool toys. All I got were table scraps and socks because you wouldn't wear any. I used them for ski hats because your size was so big! Your right about the picks. I would have picked the same because all of these games are a Crap Shoot! (Kinda like the way Cutler throws!) You have to pick 1 game out of a hat almost to be the spoiler. The monkeys were all leaning Virginia so I had to go that way so not to incur their wrath! Believe me it is not pretty. Sat is for all the marbles. You got the final four, but I have one bullet left just like Barney. My consolation is that the State of Wisconsin can once again prove it's superiority in the world of sports!

Well, it's been an er.. interesting few days! Things started well with a frame being made to add some strength to the fender pan.. This frame will be welded to the pan and some extra cross members put in for the seat to bolt to, once I get a seat that's not got and splits in it! And then the rose joints I ordered for making steering arms turned up in the post. So I set to, cutting up some thick metal.. A quick mock-up later to check that the steering would work.. And this is where a slight mistake was spotted... Can you spot it? Turn the steering wheel to the right.... And the wheel hubs turn to the left!!! I think "Oops" is the correct word As I said... An interesting few days I need to do a few tweaks but the steering is now sorted... It even steers the right direction

I picked up this 633 from Charles this past fall. All I have really done since I got it is change the rear diff. fluid and add an 8hp Kohler under the hood. I do have the original 6hp Kohler for it but I haven't been able to find a coil for it yet. It has been sitting in the storage tent not being used very much. I had a little extra energy so I decided to do a little refurb on it. The only part of the tractor that really had any paint left on it was the hood. If the hood matched the rest of the tractor I might have left it alone but it was looking pretty sad. I spent three days tearing it down cleaning, sanding and painting it. I use the tractor for light snow and I plan to cut grass and tow a small cart for firewood so she is a worker and not any type of show tractor. With that said it does look pretty good. I used Rustoleum Regal red on it. Total investment for paint, six pack of Coors and a few cigars was less than 75 bucks. All work was done in my little 8x8 workshop off the side of my garage. I'm going to do a little redo on the snow blade as well.

I beleve there is a seal in the sundstrand pump were the swash plate shaft input is . on the other side there is a oring but that side should be a seal. Its been some time sence I was in mine. I dont know were to get one but I'm sure some one will step in and tell you were to get it. got to love them 875's also the plastic slide plate looks warn on the sides where the two screws with splings are. I think that is why the shifter slides forward. if you get off you should pull the parking brake under the front of the right rear fender. this disenguages the belt and also sets the parking brake inside the diff housing. good luck :ROTF:
