7 pointsI just got my new Wheel Horse Shop Sign tonight from a shipper I used on Uship.com.The sign came from New Jersey. The sign seems like it's in excellent shape and comes with the letters numbers kit. I also think the sign wasn't ever hung in a dealership because I don't even see and brackets for the hangers. The seller claims he found it in attic from a house he bought years ago. Also that was my first experience with uship.com and it work out great and the price was great too!! By the time I spent gas, food and my time it getting the sign it was a whole alot cheaper going through this shipper out of vermont that I used. Otherwise this sign is a keeper and going to look sweet hanging up!!

5 pointsYour guys are a riot. Stealing my motto, making me laugh. I cannot compliment you more than that. The Docs have been in and my chemo is done for now. The numbers are dropping as expected and we will be entering the waiting game for my cells to begin recovering. Good news is I am off the fluids and free from Agnes, my keeper of the bags and constant dance partner. However my hot legs seem to have gotten a bit spindly and it feels odd to walk without holding onto something. And I can't even have a red bull, so no wings either. May be a rebooting of the body puter in order. LOL,!! Happy St. Party's Day to you all. :)

4 pointsI worked this afternoon on the 1961 Wheel Horse 701 tractor ! I installed the lift arm piece (bought a broken one and had a new one welded as a replacement) I had made for the Hein-Werner HY-2 Hydraulic Pump/Lift Unit I bought last Fall at an auction. I had to drill three holes in the tower of the Wheel Horse to install the hydraulic pump support plate, installed the lift arm piece in the rockshaft for the hydraulic cylinder and tested it all out with my mid-mount grader blade that also has a tongue on it to install in the Wheel Horse rear slot hitch. These old HY 2 pumps have no large fill ports like the Wheel Horse 953/1054 pumps. It tool me 45 minutes to fill the hydraulic pump through the small fill port on the side of the pump! All in all it works well -no leaks on a 52 year old HY 2 Unit (was on a 1963 753 Wheel Horse but removed at the auction I bought it at and fully complete which is why I paid $90 dollars for it. It works great as a lift and I am going to use this with my two piece cultivator attachment in the vegetable garden this summer! I have a horn to install and lights before this 701 is ready to start rolling ! I also have to bend the shifter arm tomorrow to allow me to shift into 2nd and third gear! That reverse and 1st gear is just not enough for this 701~! This is really quickly starting to be my favorite tractor ! Pics from the install

4 pointsI have had my 857 for about a month or two now. Weather is warming up and I guess it's time to begin. This is not a restoration, modification, or hot rod build. I just want to get the thing to run really good and put around the yard. Ultimately, I want to put a small blade on the front to grade my gravel drive and push some snow. It's going to be slow due to health reasons. I take out a bolt, then rest. The motor had some carb problems and the previous owner had removed the carb and fuel pump. The carb was complete but stuck. The fuel pump had been taken apart and part were missing. I was also missing the coil and coil mount. Rather than try to source all the parts and rebuild the carb I have found a nice gentleman in Cincy that has a k181 like mine in running condition. He wants to take my engine in trade. So it's off we go. This should be fun. I am sure I'll have a bunch of questions as time goes on. I got the deck off this morning. Darn thing was heavy. Had to jack up the front and cut the front wheels had left to clear the frame and pulleys. Deck is shot. One of the tie-rod ends came apart. Something else to repair already. Everything is quite rusty of course. Took the drive belt cover off and unhooked the drive belt. Hope to put the tractor up on blocks to help me. Standing on my head really causes problems. Please keep checking back from time to time. I will need some help, I'm sure. Here we go.....

4 pointsI really think that the best medicine is laughing Jim. You have known that for a long time...it is how all the people here remember you...your (cents) of humor has actually helped some of them get through rough times...including me. Thanks Mate Hey...BTW...when I was down in the Ozarks last week...I had the distinct pleasure of meeting a Chief from a native tribe that actually spoke Squonk. He told me that the word "squonk" actually translated into "here...hold my beer and watch this". HA...go figure. So I asked him..."What did (AMC RULES) translate into?' He thought for a minute... and then he shakes his head...pulls out a snot rag and blows his nose...thought for another minute...grabbed the snot rag...blew his nose again...and he says..."dam tecky...need a carb adjustment". We hit it off real good...this Buds for you.

3 pointsTo the Good Old Days! Making the trek to the annual Irish Feis (fesh) on the South Side of Chicago My grandmother's Corned Beef and Cabbage Watching "The Quiet Man" for the upteenth time. (I still enjoy it.) No Guinness in the house because my grandmother took "The Pledge" as a child. Developing a taste for Stout. "Here's to our wives and girlfriends: may they never meet!"

2 pointsI think the answer depends on what you use the machine to do. The tri ribs cited by Pete are great (as I have read) in the snow (and maybe dirt) to keep the tractor going where you want it. They may not be so good as a turf tire. If all you do is cut grass, a 2 ply turf tire will do fine. If you put a loader on it, you will need a 4 or 6 ply front tires. If you snow plow or snow blow, the tri tibs or Vredestein multi rib tires are a good choice. No one tire fits all chores, that is why many of us have more than one tractor. Just my opinion as well.

1 pointjust got this to replace my gt 1142. the gt has served me very very well for the last two years but i wanted to upgrade. so ive been looking for awhile and came across this one only about 20 minutes away! so i went ahead and got her. now it didnt come with any attachments but i am going to use the deck off the gt. also, i put my plow, chains and weights on it for this winter. i think it will do very well and hopefully earn its keep. now my future plans are to get new front tires for it, a 48 inch mower deck and maybe some paint and new seat. ive already fallen in love with this thing. just hope it can be as good if not better than the gt. anybody that has a mower deck for sale, please let me know. id like to find one soon so i can have it all ready for this spring. let me now what ya'll think!

1 pointPersonally, I don't think you have anything "wrong". I would put it back together and run it like a worker. The smoke on throttle up should diminish as the rings seat. Seating rings can take up to 8 hours. Run it for 30 minutes (as you normally do) let it cool down and re torque the head and enjoy your tractor. I would change the oil after about 3 to 4 hrs of run time.

1 pointBefore I knew I actually had a heart issue for sure I ordered a pizza to my room at 10:30 at night! We had a big power outage on a weekend night a few years back at work. A few of us were there keeping watch of the gen sets and making sure everything stayed on line. We were outside waiting for the line crew and one guy says "who wants a pizza?" He called around until he found a place that had electricity. when they asked where to deliver it to he says "The stop light in front of the Hospital" They thought it was a prank but 20 min later we had a pizza!

1 pointHere is what im talking about. Im not talking about parting out machines that are too far gone. there are many good parts on the d 180 i could show you a ton more tractors like the 520h being parted out and most body parts are easley fixed by sanding and re painting i just cant see parting out good tractors for fenders and hoods i realize they buy them and can do what they want but at the rate they are junking these there will not be any left for future collectors From the same seller.

1 pointtry again ha ha there I got it . The other day I guess I was not clicking on add reply? To me I guess that sounds like more text you know reply? I guess I thought there was a button that said "post" That's what happens to me, if I don't do something often I forget how probably sounds lame but it is the truth. Thanks for the tutorial on posting , I wrote it in my note book beside my chair . That is where I write all the things I know I will forget. Jeff

1 pointI the type of guy that doesn't hesitate to tear into anything but I have to admit I was apprehensive about a complete tear down on my 5010. After watching the videos and pestering Steve on Skype numerous times I quickly discovered it's a piece of cake but there are little details you need to be aware of. Working on these trannys is really pretty fun. Once it's determined what parts you need you'll get help on that as well. You definitely came to the right place for willing, friendly help.

1 pointThe third gear issue is going to be the hook up between the 3523 Hi/2nd gear and 3522 input gear. here's a picture of a worn 3523 and a NOS. I would suggest starting by watching the videos here. A good inspection of everything and some pictures and you'll find all the help you'll need right here. It's really pretty straight forward once you get into it. For sure replace all the seals. I was typing when Jake posted. He's spot on.

1 pointThere is nothing else out there to buy because you bought them all . Congrats on your 1st house. Now let the work begin...

1 pointAdding pictures to RedSquare is very easy. Click on "More Reply Options" in the bottom right. That will open a different text box. Now in the bottom left is a button that says "Choose Files". Click that. A new box opens within your computer allowing you to choose the picture that is stored in a folder on your computer. Double click on the picture, or select the picture and click "open". The folder will close, and a small thumbnail of your picture will appear at bottom left with the name of the file, and directly across from it on the right side will appear "Add to Post | Delete". Click on "Add to Post" The name of you file will then be shown either at the beginning of you text, or somewhere in within. It depends on where you left the typing cursor. I always click my mouse and place the cursor where I want the picture to appear. At that point, you look at the bottom center and you will see two buttons, "Add Reply" and "Preview Post". If you click on "Add Reply", the post will immediately be sent with the picture attached. If you click on "Preview Post" you will see what your post, with the picture will look like before it is posted, allowing you to edit. Then you can hit "Add Reply" if everything is okay.

1 pointThe marks at top dead center, from the pictures, I see nothing to worry about. Its the vertical scoring in the bore that could cause it to burn oil / lack compression due to blow by. If it is just light scoring " hardly can feel with your finger nail " then maybe you can run it a little more at higher rpm then under load and it might reseat if lucky. If you can feel these grooves, they will tear the rings up and they will never seat right. Best case, It might just need more lube and some time. Possible , re hone and set of rings. Worst case, needs an oversized piston. Just curious, what made you open it up? Did someone warn you of your break in procedure? Also , reviewing the pictures again, it shows the scoring to be on both intake/exhaust and starter side of motor. Is this a new aftermarket piston? Was the piston and bore measured before putting together. Could have been running lean and hot, which caused some scoring from piston to bore tolerance being off. Just giving you some more ideas. Generally, break in is done at med rpms under no load, run up to operating temp. Then drain, inspect and replace oil. Torque head bolts. Then second run, drive it around a little and give it more of a range on rpms. Let cool. Final run, is give the motor a load and run it good and hot. Change oil, and check head bolt torque a final time then treat it like the rest of the herd. Everyone has different methods on this procedure but I find this to be the safest and you can change oil on the second run if nervous, to check for any funny sparkles. Some people just go and run it like its a broke in motor and never look back.

1 pointYou guys saved me a couple hundred dollars. I'm going to give the mole traps a try. (The comment about "seat time" really hit home!). With regards to "before" pictures, unfortunately, I did not begin the work on the tractor with the intention of doing a restoration - it just turned out that way. So, I do not have a shot of the tractor before the projects began. I do have some pictures of the work in progress. I have attached them. I replaced the old incandescent lights with LED - really makes a difference.

1 pointOnce again, I really appreciate everyone's responses. This was my first post to the Wheel Horse Forum. I've attached several pictures of my Wheel Horse. My Dad purchased this in 1967. It was used for thirty years to mow our acre lot. I figure it probably has 1,000 to 1,300 hours on it. He had a local guy do the regular maintenance pretty nicely. When it was not mowing, it was in the garage. It has never seen rain or snow. As Dad got older, the tractor sat in the garage as he used a lawn service to manage the property. Last year I inherited the tractor. It looked pretty rough. It had two flat tires, hadn't been cleaned in many years, lights didn't work, cigarette lighter was missing, fluids were old, and the belts were getting brittle. But you know what, it started on the first turn with no smoke. I cleaned it up, replaced all the missing parts, and painted it. It runs and looks like I remember it as a kid. I have great memories of years mowing our lawn on this tractor. I don't want to "break" it, but I also don't want it to just sit. So, I have purchased a de-thatcher and an aerator for it. I am also thinking of getting a 650 pound Brinley roller. I have a half acre lot. With all of this equipment, the old Wheel Horse should feel right at home on a new lawn. Thanks, again!

1 pointWell this comes up every few years, and if you notice under my name, I've been here a long time, I'm member 85 out of what 11,000 members, so I'm going to say I part tractors out, and make money doing it, if I didn't make money I sure as heck would not put up with the BS I get selling parts, for every 10 parts request I get I might sell 5 parts, I stock over 100 tractors and literally thousands of parts, and have sold to MANY MANY members here. To the original poster, you have to part out nice machines to get good parts, take that old worn out junker, and part it out, what will you get old worn out parts, kinda hard to sell a junk part, do I part out clean ready to use tractors, NO, but I also don't give them away, why would I sell a running machine for less than $300-400 that I can part out for $600+ Do I part out rare or hard to find models ? NO, I try not to part out any round hoods, but it happens, try to restore a tractor that needs parts with out a used parts supplier, many parts are NLA from Toro, and if they are available they are not cheap, buying good used parts KEEPS this hobby alive, with used parts the hobby would be hard to do looking at you broken tractor that you can't get parts for.
-
1 pointWell I am way down here in Florida where there are not a lot of wheel horses or parts. I have about 9 tractors that I got from my father when he passed. I plan on parting out three of them just to make the other six nice. It costs way to much to have larger parts shipped and pay the asking price. Most of the ones I have look nice but when you start digging in them you find wacked wiring, rusted parts, missing parts, this motor doesnt run and this trans needs axle........ I have no problem parting some of mine. Others may live because of it. And they all are pretty much complete and in decent shape. Problem is there are not too many people that are gonna drive from up north to florida for an average tractor. So I have my own parts store. I also like to customize and love street rod style hot rods. Wait till you see what I have planned for the D-160 leftovers.......

1 pointI wanted to take a moment to let everyone know that Terry has decided to return to the ranks of Supporter and for me to publicly thank him for the years of help and friendship. Terry assistance has greatly contributed to the forum and I can honestly say that we wouldn't be where we are with out him. More than that, he been (and continues to be) my friend and I am grateful for that. He's not leaving RedSquare, in fact, he's looking for a Roundhood so please be on the look out! T-Mo (Terry) I can't thank you enough for everything you've done for us and for me. I hope you get that round hood and the 1963 model would always be the best!

1 pointFront end installed and gearlash setup. Engine installed. Hood bolted back on. Battery hooked up. All wheels on. Rear fender is just sitting. Need to install Matt's foot control then machine will be done. Last pic shows this machine to the left, the 1988 520-H with gear reduction swept front end completely restored in front, and the almost complete HC to the rear. My HD snow removal tractor is in the other bay. Cleat
