6 pointsIt's the first time this winter that we finally got a decent amount of snow to try the 523Dxi. I had been predicted that our area was to be in the 4" -8" band. It ended up to be about 4" or a fraction more. It was nice, fluffy stuff due to the cold. I was out for almost two hours doing mine and five neighbors driveways. I'm happy with the tractor and cab but due to the design, I don't get the heat like the classic Wheel Horse. The airflow is moving forward for cooling on the 5xi series. With the fan drawing the air from the cab cooling the radiator for the diesel, there is quite a bit of air passing through the cab. On the 5xi cab there are actually two vent instead of windows on the rear to draw air from the outside. One advantage though is I don't have to deal with fogging the windshield! I have ideas for next winter on how to reroute the airflow. The single stage snowthrower is everything everybody says it is. A useful piece of information by JerseryHawg/Glenn though. He found out from a dealer that the torque produced by the engines used in the 5xi can tear the single stage apart. This is especially possible with the diesel so I am going to install a tach. I have actually been using a 1/3 throttle setting wihich seems to be the right amount for today. The diesel has been sipping fuel I am glad to report. With four hours of use, it has used approximately 2-1/2 gallons. My Kohlers go through a tank (4.5 gallons of Premium) in the same amount of time! Today's setup. Starting down my one neighbor's long driveway Why you need a cab. A nice plume. On the return. Looks like a toy against the trees A job well done! My Wheel Horse "Gate Guard"

5 pointsWell living in Boston this year we have had a lot of snow just to say the least. About 8 feet in the past 4 weeks and the horses are getting a work out and finding all the weaknesses. I'm out of commission for the snow but the wife, daughter and her boyfriend are keeping up with it. Problems in had this winter are a blown engine in the 72 raider 14 with snow blower attached and smoked bearings on the drive idler and snapped belt on the 312-8. 72 will be down until I can get around again so repaired the 312 and removed front blade from that and installed blower. Just a couple of picks.

5 pointsPicked up this C-120 a couple of days ago, runs good, nice straight machine. but i noticed it has solid rear wheels. Was this an option, or is this another brand wheel.

2 pointsThis big boy stopped by for a snack last spring, didn't damage the feeder, just stood there eating. Living on the side of a mountain you tend to have a few visitors come by, just happened to have a camera ready this time.

2 pointsAll the others were north of me John. Now, this one is to the south. Seems like I am in no ( ) mans land. We may be on the north edge and get 3-6" from this one. Do you need any extra operators to run all that equipment?

2 pointsI am proud to introduce my little girl "Bonte". She came to us as a previously abused stray and lived in my shop office for the first few years (our old crotchety house cat was not interested in sharing). She would hide behind a life size cut-out of NASCAR driver Bobby LaBonte until I sat down at the desk, then would feel it was safe to come out, thus the name Bonte. The old cat passed away a few years ago and now she is Queen of the roost.

1 pointTook videos but cant get them to load. Its saying im not permitted to load this kind of file.

1 pointIt could be a weak battery or bad connections. Make sure the battery is fully charged and ideally measures about 12.5 volts. Also clean all connections with emery cloth or a file. Yes it could be a solenoid but check the battery and connections first. You can jump the battery directly to the starter to try to bypass and isolate faulty components or connections. You can also use an ohm meter to try to identify faulty connections that show resistance and to check the solenoid and the key switch.
-
1 pointThe click you hear is the solenoid so if it clicks everytime you hit the key then the solenoid and keyswitch are probably fine. Before you start buying parts I would take all the connections at the starter and solenoid and clean em up with some emery cloth or sandpaper and remake them all. Mike...........

1 pointSaw some pretty impressive (professional / commercial version) Simplicitys at the local dealer a few weeks ago. Going to push to get a new one for the club to replace the old Troy-Bilt homeowner model they currently use. The big boss bought a tracked Husqvarna a few weeks ago, used it twice, and broke it each time. (traction control lever first, then something to do with the auger / shear pins) Hondas are nice, but they are definitely proud of them.

1 pointI hear ya.The Squaws little sister live on Cape Cod.They talked on the phone a little while ago.I guess they got another 6 inches today.Blizzard conditions, she said.I know what you mean about all this snow being rough on equipment.I had many break downs this year clearing many 12 and 14 inch snow falls.I'm ready for Spring. Then I can break lawn mower decks instead of snow blower attachments.

1 pointI use them as well. Three years now, and well worth the investment. Turfs, rubber chains, tri-ribs up front, and weight on an 854. No problems.

1 pointThe Mid-Atlantic States have sort of been left out of this Winter's favorite pastime. This has been especially hard for me, originally from a more snowy part of the country, with a new (to me) tractor and snowthrower setup to try out. Tonight we are predicted to finally get 6"-12" of snow in our area. Paladin and Oxford are in the wings and ready! Waiting on the bench "batting cleanup" in their warm-ups are Larrabee, Pancho, and Hopalong.

1 pointIf the correct belt is supposed to be 81.5 " that extra 1/2" in length could make all the difference. You may be able to get away with a 81" belt. Sound like not enough tension available with the longer belt.

1 pointAll the old Gravelys can toss it. My neighbor had one of the Dog eaters in the 60's that threw it over the lines and across the highway to the other side!
-
1 pointbe careful what you wish for. we have had 6 ft or more in the last 3 weeks. I can't believe I'm saying this but can't wait for the lawnmowing it was -6 this morning to boot

1 pointThey are mounted on the 8.5" wide rims that come on 520's (and GT-1848's wink wink ) Mike........

1 pointwhat a shame how some people destroy or try to destroy these things. makes a person sick!!!
-
1 pointThe sheet metal change in the hood stand area makes it more difficult. When I went to install the flag on the C 145. I couldn't believe the difference. I also picked up a 314 last summer. The lift eye bolt was all bent up. It was a PITA getting that upper hitch pin out. On my 73 or 76 I reach in on the right side by the PTO lever and get my fingers right on it.
-
1 pointI really encourage you to try pulling that panel off -- I think that is what the engineers who designed these tractors intended -- It is a lot easier than the contortions need to reach around and up to that arm -- I figured this out after I went thru something similar to what you are up against -- And I was only trying to get to a hole on the other part of the arm used for the snow blade
-
1 pointWhen I got to the fellas home he had 4 xi tractors. If this snowblower was ever used I can't see it. Chute. Auger. Skid shoes. Etc. No paint missing. Funny how the mrs. And kids went to Canada and I found this. Lol He had a snow blade to. Left that there. Just wanted to share it with you guys. When I find a snow cab I will be complete.

1 pointI think it a shame that folks would hesitate to put any old machine they have to work. I get the fact that they are quite old, but the technology is not such that anything on the machine that would break (except for the hood) could easily be replaced. Model A ford drivetrain parts are not in that short of supply, and guys that could repair anything related to an A can be found worldwide. Please understand my opinion is likely different than most since there have always been Model A's in my family and I have a fair knowledge and understanding of Model A's. My point being the mere fact that the tractors have Model A trans rear end etc as components of the machine should not scare guys away from working these tractors. Look at the Model A hobby, there are thousands of these cars all over the world still in use today. Folks tour their Model A's all over the country and put literally thousands of miles on these cars all the time. I just really hate to think of folks having machines or equipment they don't/won't readily put to work. Mind you I am not saying such machines should be worked like a dog, but rather yes, they should be used to mow or push snow or other such work from time to time in my mind. That is just my 2 cents, for me I have no real use for a machine or gun or whatever that I don't/can't/won't put to some sort of use or work, not abusive work, but some sort of constructive work. I will go visit a museum to see things so old their only use today is as a vision of a machine or tool of days gone by. Please accept my apology for anyone this post might offend as I have no interest in insulting any of my fellow members here, you all have nothing but my greatest respect regardless how you might choose to use or not use your machines or equipment. I am simply sharing my own personal opinion broadly speaking and not directed at ANY individual.
