I used to post a significant amount of help articles and quite frankly I have stopped because of what Cas is describing. Many folks can confirm I have taken to "private sessions", a great help to the problem owner but unfortunately not visible or of any benefit to other forum members. I chose to work with issues this way to prevent confusion on the part of those less experienced with electrical work, Too many cooks in the kitchen gets confusing and sometimes contradictory posts end up taking the owner temporarily off track. Before anyone cries out electrical elitism, I am not claiming others inputs are incorrect, just opening up too many options for the owner to follow. If another forum member offers what amounts to "drive by" advice, makes one post with no explanation of why or how the owner should perform their suggested action, the owner ends up being further confused. The "drive by" adviser somehow is never heard from again. The next contributor, has to spend additional time and effort to either "un-explain" the "drive - by's" suggestion or possibly be forced to comment on the validity of the post to prevent the session from going off track. The value of having a locked (even pinned) help tutorial is obvious. Most folks who take the hours - yeah HOURS - of their own time to create these posts and videos usually have a handle on best practices needed to resolve a specific issue. Having a locked post allows the owner of the problem a direct one stop shopping experience to resolve their issue. I believe if someone takes the HOURS needed to create a detailed tutorial for the benefit of all members of the forum, mods should be able to invest MINUTES to lock the post. Sorry if any of this is harsh, but it is why I don't post tutorials anymore.

HO slot cars! My 11 year old grandson came over last weekend so we got out my mega collection of slot cars and track! I have 4 tackle boxes full of slot cars and a few other original Thunder Jet slot car cases full of oldies! I have Thunder Jets, A/FX Magna Traction, Tyco Pro and 440X2 mostly. This is a fun hobby and my buddy and I have been doing it since we were about 13 years old so that is 40 years worth of collecting and racing these little buggers! Anybody else into this hobby? I think Lane Ralph is into it. I may have more slot cars than Wheel Horse tractors!

I hate how I have some item stored in some really bizarre location but refuse to move it to the more logical place, BECAUSE I know that as soon as I do I will NEVER remember the new location.

I've owned many of these along the way. Simplicity is my other favorite brand besides Wheel Horse. The Garden Tractors are very stout and used either Briggs or Kohlers. I Never saw a "Techy" in the Garden Tractor line.

After looking for a larger used Cabinet Blaster for a few months I decided to build one. I did some research reading through several builds on the net, and looking at manufactured models. My cabinet work area is 48"w x32"H x 39"D and takes some design features from units manufactured by TP Tools. A lot of my designs start with available scrap and I had a lot of 3/4" scrap plywood, and a pile of scrap 18-20 gauge sheet metal to work with. Here my cabinet lined with sheet metal. I'm going with a front load design because loosing shop wall space for a side door opening was not a good option. Here the cabinet side view. I suspect I may add a side door for long items some day.I used contact cement to attach the sheet metal to the plywood. Used 2 coats on the wood and one coat on the metal which worked very well. I cut all the sheet metal with an abrasive blade in my table saw. The seams are sealed with silicone caulk. The cabinet hopper has a 1: steel pipe fitting in the bottom to attach the media siphon valve The Tacoma company sells an upgrade kit for Harbor Freight cabinets. I purchased it and it has a foot air valve, media siphon valve, air regulator and blast gun. Dave at Tacoma was really good to talk to and helped size the blast gun nozzle and orifice in the media valve to my compressor. I'm getting excited to try this out! The front load door is my last challenge,

If your battery is 10 years old, it is shot. Put a NEW battery in there and see what happens. NEVER EVER EVER "rap" on a starter. Hammers don't fix electrical problems.

I have rebuilt countless Kohler engines and primarily use aftermarket parts because of cost. Not a single one has ever had a problem. Proper rebuilding procedures will give excellent results.

This thread is fantastic. I spend at least 20% of my shop time looking for something...or trying to remember why I walked to the tool chest. It is amazing how far things can bounce and roll on concrete. I don't even bother looking for many things just slap on a replacement. (Like the detent ball in the stick shift tranny's. I bought a bag of 100 from McMaster and I haven't looked for one since.

well I'm really glad this group therapy session is getting somewhere! I always get to the point that I'll think to grab another similar sized object and drop it in the same place to see where it went... only to be looking for 2 for another 10 minutes

Here is another alternative. These old big Tecumseh motors are used still in the Texas oil fields. http://welderpartswarehouse.net/Tecumseh_Ignition_Upgrade_610748_610906.html

Steve I think he is simply stating that they should maybe pinned in a help forum. I think that would work much better then the search method because a lot of people potentially helped might not know to search for them specifically or might have issues wording a search to come up with the appropriate results. The search function is a finicky animal anyway. It would also be easier on people who aren't as computer literate. Not everyone that plays with these vintage machines is as good on the PC as the WH.

I have owned Simplicity / Allis Chalmers Big Ten's and Simplicity Landlords. I will say this, if I had more room I wish I still had these two. They ain't no joke. You can lock the rear diff. for posi and the Brigg's motor's they used were a good engine.. I had a snow thrower on the Big Ten and it threw BIG TIME snow with ease and with that posi they can push a heck of a lot of snow. They do a wicked nice job cutting grass. Yes, they are a little harder to work on than a Wheel Horse but they are built tough. Buy a decent one and it's not like you'll be working on it everyday..

Looks good but I would have painted the edge black and replaced the bolts. Lots of crud gets trapped in there. Good to get it out.

Geno, is it my understanding that you are planning to buy Horses, restore them and put them up for sale like they are "pre-owned" If so I wish that you lived closer to me man! I think that's a great idea.

Steering wheel removal, then any controls that go through the plastic shrouding covering the dash gauges (biggest pain of the whole job). Remove the 2 phillips screws and it is easy after that.

Bmsgaffer save yourself some trouble. Synthetic oil, electric fuel pump, and a fully charged battery. Very fast starts every time. No power where my horses are stored. $20 solar battery charger from Northern tool has been a blessing.

I don't use my auto's yet for cold weather work (in various states of modification), but when I do, I plan on running a magnetic block heater on the transmission. I run a 300 watt one on my truck oil pan all night if its below 20 out and she fires right up without the slightest hint of the usual cold oil valve tick. 200 Watt I will be using for the tractor: http://www.amazon.com/Kats-1153-Handi-Heat-Magnetic-Heater/dp/B000BOABS6 300 Watt for the truck: http://www.amazon.com/Kats-1160-300-Watt-Handi-Heat-Magnetic/dp/B000I8YOR4 If I could find something that would work for the engine block (finding a large enough surface to stick something too) I would be heating that too before a very cold weather start. Is it necessary? No. But it will definitely reduce the wear on a cold start and the hydro should be ready to go prewarmed.

That is lookin really bad a** can tell youve put a lot of thought, and time, into it! And I can certainly vouch for how incredibly handy a blast cabinet can be - our horses can sure get rusty and nasty... You didnt mention having a vacuum system - this is virtually a MUST HAVE in a cabinet, it will dust up so bad all the lighting wont help. Having had the HF cabinets for some time now and experimenting with several cobbled up vacuum versions, I finally broke down and got the "reclaimer" system from HF -- this thing is GREAT! I scrounged up a %25 coupon and that made the cost just over a hundred bucks which I thought was a steal. Those Tacoma people are great, I get some of my blast media from them. Otherwise I get Black Diamond from TSC (Its SO cheap!) Keep the pics coming...

My 314h is pretty good when cold. Has 200ish hours. My 522xi loader, also an Eaton 1100, has 1100ish hours needs time to come to grips w Mother Nature. I let it run 1/2-3/4 throttle for 20 min. Even then it seems slow. After driving it for a bit she comes around and operates just fine. Quite frankly I'm happy if they move at all in zero degree weather.

As Vin mentioned already I did lose my tank out of my restored 58. I have learned to fab up a support rod from the bottom of the tank strap to the front button bolt holding the hood to the frame. It supports the gas tank and no bounce to pull on the hood. IMO should have been done from the factory on every tank.

Terry I built the 12hp kohler on my worker with the aftermarket parts, I will use them again. Good machining and cleanliness equals good rebuilt, engine rpm set properly, regular oil changes will make it last a long time. Just my I am currently using machine shop in Northfield. Does good work. Tom

I sell a lot of aftermarket parts. Not all parts but a large amount are made by the very same manufacture. Most electrical parts,Gaskets, spark plugs ,fuel pumps.are the same .Enternal parts are about 50-50 .My parts supplier can't tell me which are which but I have gotten Kohler aftermarket rods that had the Kohler parts number molded in the rod just like the OEM. I have also gotten blades with both the OEM and aftermarket number stamped on them.

Here's my take on OEM vs. aftermarket. I have rebuilt several Kohler's, I have used nothing but OEM. Now with that being said I am now in the middle of a rebuilding a Kohler and I am having a very hard time justifying spending what Kohler wants for parts. There are members on here that have used aftermarket parts and have had great success. I in the past ordered some aftermarket parts and sent them right back because the quality was just not there. What Kohler is asking for OEM parts now is just ridiculous. So i myself am going to try aftermarket. I know there are some brands better than others. Anymore in todays world and how big business works it would not surprise me if several of the aftermarket brand all came form the same manufacture just package different. Like I said I personally can not justify the prices Kohler is asking, even then I don't know if OEM is really any better now. There probably coming from the same Chinese factory that the rest of after marketing coming from.

PVC Glue. You need to buy a little can for every plumbing job. Just do it. If you don't and you actually know where you can is, You be all set to glue the pipe. Grab that can and the lid is welded to the can . Or the lid is free but the glue is shot. I buy the small cans so not a lot is thrown away. When I did plumbing at work every job got a new can plus primer on the parts list. We have a big cabinet for storage and there are about 10 cans of glue in varying stages of dryness and every color of primer solvent imaginable. You need a respirator on everytime you open the cabinet to get the sawzall out!

I'm with Squonk on this one. The wife can find ANYTHING! Friend of mine couldn't find a mid mount idler for a tiller. Searched everywhere in the garage. Wife walks in and finds it in 30 seconds.

Your 520 sounds pretty healthy! I bet that back in the day before you were into Wheel Horse you didn't have to clear that road out in the grass leading up to the magic shed now did you? I clear out a nice big path in my yard just to get my trailer out "just in case" its needed!
