Got...maybe 6" of the slick, dry, powdery stuff here overnight... definitely was a far cry from the Armageddon forecasters were predicting(not complaining)... did the drive and side with the blower, early this morning...wasn't pretty, but did make it happen though. Just connected the dots to the shed out back, chose my plow this time, and went much better.

A friend brought this by yesterday. From what I have read on Red Square the first 500 Special had a H60 recoil start. This one has a HH60 with recoil and electric start. Looks to be fairly complete with the original seat. The cushion is torn, but you can still see the wheel horse logo. Thought some of you might like pictures. I'm more into the bigger HP tractors so I will sell or trade this one.

It's been a while since I added to the WH side of the collection, but today I aquired a pretty nice 603. It has a few minor issues here and there, but with a little elbow grease and some attention I think it's going to be a pretty nice little rig. The original Techy runs quite well - even though I'm not a fan. The steering wheel is super mint.

Well here in central Ohio we only got a mere 5 inches of the white stuff! Bummer for my snow plow rig, a 1974 A90 Special! I fired it up anyways and let it fly. The county snow plow didn't even bother to go down my road so I did part of my road and my one neighbor did part of the road too with his new fangled Cub Cadet tractor. Then I did my driveway and my neighbor ladies driveway too just for fun. It took about 2 hours to do all of this. This is the first time I got to use my snow plow this winter! So far we haven't got much snow this year, not like most of you guys are getting!

Off topic but looking at your avatar brings back memories. Many years ago I was privileged to have this beautiful creature.

Just in case you wondered, everyone in northern Wisconsin and the Upper penninsula of Michigan is laughing their asses off right now. A two foot drop of snow is not historic, does not shut down the city for three days, and does not require the National Guard. It is called Tuesday, and it happens all the time!

Like the one I have, that I cant get done. Lol BUT,,,,,,,,,,and I am no expert. The motor "should be" a recoil start, period. Did not read anywhere of a electric start. The rumor says that MANY DEALERS changed engines to make the tractor more desireable and marketable. Its still sweet, and once done a beauty. All the above, my humble comments. A great tractor. Glenn

Hard to measure what we ended up with because of all the drifting but I have about 14"-20" of new snow here. My small town has two pickups and two dump-trucks for snow removal.....we now have two pickups and ONE dump-truck!! Saw this about an hour ago (sorry, cheapie cell phone pic thru my truck window) The driver was out and talking to another driver so I'm thinking no injuries. Its only on its side so maybe it could be pulled back over and get back to work ?? Mike.............

And if the tranny drive pulley is OK, check the axle keys.
  13. 2 points
Sounds like the woodruff key on the transmission drive pulley has come out or sheared. Jack the back end up so the wheels are off the ground, start the engine. The pulley on the transmission should be turning, and the input shaft that it is mounted on should be turning with the pulley. If it is not, pull the pulley off and inspect the key.

Depends what you like Brrly. Our show will have a lot that the Big Show doesn't from what I've heard. We will have 100's of acres to play on and will actually be able to use them. There will be fields surrounding the main show area set apart for mowing, plowing, tilling, etc. If anyone wants to use any equipment we will have a place for it. I can't wait to see all the horses at work. There's more but that's enough spoilers for today...

Is this going to be the pre-show to the Big Show?? Shall we say warm up!!

OH NO! Your front end is most likely fine, but I'm concerned about your brother, how bad did you hurt him?

I was cruising the back allies of my small home town today and spotted a Wheel horse from a long ways away! I went around the corner and down the next ally and found this oldie buried under some snow! It looked like a Bolens at first with all the snow on it. But after closer inspection I see it is a WH. I talked to the owner and he said he just got it last week with the big Farmall tractor that is next to it. I asked if it was for sale and he said sure. I looked it over and he said it was a 654. It has a 654 drive belt guard on it but after I checked it out further, I could tell it was a 1961 Model #701, one of my favorites! It has the wrong hood and is missing the seat and spring and the double starter generator belt guard is missing too. No big deal since I have one on the shelf. All else looks good including the Kohler motor is loose and intact. He said for me to make him an offer so I said $75.00 and he said no, but he would take $150.00 for it. I said I would go that high on it. I got his phone number and said I would get it next week or next weekend. He said he had some more WH's in the barn, a Raider 12, a Lawn Ranger, a 654 and a very nice old 1958 WH! I said I would like to see the 1958 Horse but he said these weren't for sale. I asked if I bought the other one, if I could see the 1958 tractor and he said yes. So I will get back to him later to get the 701 and see the oldie in the barn. I was hoping it was older than 1958 and maybe I would try to buy it anyways! I will keep ya all posted on this deal!

Here are a few from my neighborhood and around the house. The first two are of the neighborhood's pet doe when it was a fawn last year. It wandered up to me while I was working on a cart. It still is very tolerant of humans. Long story of it being separated from its mother and then adopted by a neighbor after being shunned by the rest of the herd. It had it's own fawn this year. The neighbor has a dog collar on it to prevent being culled. Another neighbor has a farmette with two horse and five goats. Its not uncommon to find the horses broken free. Oke', my dog, was wondering about those "big deer!" The other shots are just some of the local critters. It's interesting living where I am. Rarely a day goes by without taking some type of picture.

Hey Geno have you called Toro yet to ask what they want for the rest of the Wheel Hose stock parts and naming rights to produce more tractors?

My winter projects are coming along nicely. I wanted to get everything done last fall because it was such a tuff winter last year, and I did. So my winter projects are...sleep late in the mornings, go ice fishing when the temp is in the 20's, light the fire place and watch as much football & basketball as I can, eat a lot of comfort food. I can report that the time line is looking good for a successful winter this year.

Some of you may remember this little guy that showed up in my driveway one day a couple of years ago while I was at work. Since he was missin several parts and not even sure if he ran or moved under his own power. I decided to just put him out back for now until I was really bored or something. Well i decided in the fall to take a look at him. He did come with a motor and it seems to run ok ...no smoke or strange noises so that's a good thing. Next up was the tranny...It seemed to work as it should so i thought "what the $#@" since these tractors aren't just layin around here ..at any price ! As it turns out the sheet metal is in BAAAD shape , only pieces that aren't dented ,cracked or broken completely are the running boards. Also the trans was not so good inside, i think the previous owner's thought it was a syncromesh LOL. He is also missin a number of small parts which some of i have already acquired from others, including at least 2 members here and there will be more im sure LOL.So the process of fixin all the years of abuse and neglect has begun (i must be nuts).

The fun part has began! Got the hood and frame painted on sunday. Tonight I put the drive system and the steering together, it is as far as I can go for now, but was glad to start assembling it. Still have the get the wheels and speed selector arm done, but everything else is done. I am going to get some bolts plated, and then I can put it most of the rest of the way together. Anyways, heres a couple pictures, going together very easy so far, very happy with how its turning out. Thanks, Jake

Have never seen the blades for shaft driven decks available from anyone but Toro. One blade turns clockwise and the other counter-clockwise. And Toro does a poor job of displaying the current part numbers so owners are aware they have them. 32" two-blade set # 8777 36" two-blade set # 8014 Garry

Just got it home 3 days ago and since weather isn't very nice out for pictures all i can show is it in my cramped up garage... I will definitely post more pictures of it cleaned up and looking good this spring. Came with a 60" fab deck and i went and picked up a 42" single stage snow thrower for it today.

The hub needs to pulled off. If I'm seeing what I think I'm seeing, you may have serious damage to the axle and/or hub. The keys are half-moon shaped and sit in a half-moon shaped slot that is about 3/16" shallower than the key, allowing it to stick up into a corresponding slot in the hub. Then the set screw is tightened onto the key holding the whole thing in place. The second set screw at 90 degrees to the main one is to help eliminate what has happened to you.

On the last photo....Remove the square headed bolt. If there are 2, remove both of them. The "key" in the 2nd to last photo has to be in the keyway in the axle a little bit. See if you can line up the bolt hole on the backside to the key on the front side. This will line the key-way up, and you should be able to lightly tap the outer end of the key back down and into the keyway in the hub. Pull the hub off and inspect for any damage other than the outer edge of the hub being rounded out a little. Probably be best to use a new key when you put it back together. Your 1st photo of the hub & axle are what both sides should look like.

First check to see if the ammeter returns to a "0" indication with the tractor turned off. If the meter is offset to a positive reading with engine off, replace the gauge or mentally subtract the amps displayed when off from the amps displayed when charging. If the ammeter correctly shows a high charge all the time, measure the battery with the tractor off. A classic dead cell battery will read about 10.something volts and never charge to 12.6 volts. This can also be checked using an external battery charger. Check your charge circuit. Engine off, battery should read around 12.6 volts if fully charged. With the engine running, 13.8 to 14.5 ish volts should be at the battery terminal. There is a post in the instructional section on checking for parasitic current draw with the engine off. Check out that post or use the search feature for the word parasitic.

Jim: That pump is a replacement pump ( I saw the tractor when it was loaded up on the trailer at Rodney Burger's to take to you) . There was however an original pump used on some of the early 953's that was longer than the replacement Hein-Werner pump. I have seen photos of a "bump out" on the side panel of the 953 that accomodated the longer pump. We actually have a 953 early tractor (in parts ) that had the original longer Hein-Werner pump. The original pump canister that held the hydraulic fluid had a regular pipe port on it at the side to refill fluid. The pump did not have a hex head bolt in the center of the canister to refill. The side panel had to accommodate this longer pump and cover the "bump out". The original panel on our 953 tractor (which was given to us) had that "bump out" panel removed. I have not seen one of the panels for sale or in person in the last seven years -only photos. The easiest thing to do would be to use the later replacement pump Hein-Werner made and then the flat side panel will cover it. Here are some photos I took of the canisters on the Hein-Werner pumps for comparison. Also your pump is a Century Fox -not Hein-Werner .

When I wrote this, I had completed the conversion. Been using it ever since. I think I have about 20 hours on it since. It's perfect. It's as is the tractor never had that feature. I never even think about it. I ended up removing the actuator arms. I didn't update the thread because there didn't seem to be much interest. Hopefully this will end up helping someone. It's a very simple conversion.

Instructions on page 13 of the Eaton 1100 hydro manual (sitting on my workbench right now!) Jack up the rear end so the tires are off the ground. Make sure hydro is at operating temperature. Run transmission forward, release the foot pedal and depress brake to bring to neutral. If the wheels still creep: Under the seat is a triangular plate. Loosen the lock nut on the eccentric. Turn the ecentric until the wheels come to a halt. Turn the eccentric the other direction until the wheels start to rotate the other direction. Set the eccentric to middle of these two positions and tighten the lock nut. You will love that foot pedal!

I don't see that Geno is going to hurt the rest of us who do this as a hobby. Yes he will drive hundreds of miles to buy tractors. but when he does he buys a collection of five or more. Sometimes as many as 30 at one time. For him it is not profitable to drive 50 to a hundred miles for one tractor. For me I will drive two hundred miles to get one if it is something I want. He could not survive doing that. The good thing for me is I just made a great deal for a 520-H with 60 in deck and he is going to hold it for me till I can get it. And the price was exactly what I thought it was worth to me. Of course I really am a hobbyist. I buy a Wheel Horse and I restore it. That's why I buy it. The fun of doing the work is what I get out of it. I would never sell one to make any money for any reason. My belief is that if you do this and then resell them, you are in fact running a part time business. Now before anyone gets their panties in a knot, I personally don't care one way or another what the other guy does. I am sure we all love what we do with these wonderful machines. If anything I am jealous of Geno. He has a beautiful wife who supports him in everything he does and has turned his hobby into a business that he gets to work right alongside his wife in. If is was a bit younger I might try that myself. Can it get any better than that?

I'm trying too decide how I want this one to look. First pic is as I bought it, second is the idea stage.. Once I decide on what I really want to do with it I'll tear it all down and put a real nice paint job on it. I might go with the big tires in back with tri ribs on stock front rims painted white? (as the slots are off of my Suburban.) I might go with a different decal idea.,the 855 decals are kinda boring. Oh, and I hope to find something big too stuff under the hood. Maybe an Onan, Kohler twin or a Briggs Vanguard twin. I gotta have at least 18 hp on this one...
