4 pointsWell, I have wanted one of these for a LONG time and now I finally have one. This 420 was used. It seems like it was at least taken care of mechanically. The oil was full and pretty clean and the air filter was pretty clean as well. The 20 hp Kohler runs excellent with 250 hrs. on it and its pretty friggin fast!. Cosmetically it could be better.. The paint has some chips and scratches here and there as well as the decals being a little scratched and marked up. The seat has a few tears where you sit. Thankfully I work for a leather company with a 60,000 square foot buiding full of leather so matching it up shouldn't be too difficult. The chrome isn't too bad other than the steering wheel. having EVERYTHING rechromed is pretty much out of the question because I'm pretty sure that will put me in the poor house. I'm not too sure on whether to fully restore it or leave it as a survivor.. I know I won't be able to do it this year as I'm hoping to sell my house this spring if all goes well. There just enough enough room in my current garage to properly restore this tractor. Anyway, here is how it has cleaned up since yesterday...

4 pointsAmerican Pickers is scheduled to air on Wednesday night, December 3rd, on The History Channel at 9:00 EST. (also on at different times this week on your local station. The episode’s title is “Grudge Matchâ€. I can tell you now that I was contacted by the producers and asked to contribute some Wheel Horse photos for this episode. I have not seen it and not sure what will appear. The photos requested were of some of our 1964 Wheel Horse 1054's. I signed a release that provided the photos for their use. I do know that the producers have given me a "credit" that runs at the end of the show! *************************** SHOW TIMES: Grudge Match Premiere Date:December 03, 2014 - 09:00-10:03PM ET It's Frank vs. Mike when the guys take to the track for a grudge match drag race to see who has the fastest ride. 4 pointsWell I would like to thank everyone of my Red Square friends who donated to my cancer benefit that was set up by Derek(octfst)Rehberg and his wife Tammy, Mike(55rj35)Wall and his wife Deb, John(brrly1)Campbell who donated the tombstone weights and a few others that helped out on this site! They held the drawing tonight but I couldn't make it up to see it in person. My wife Tammy and I really appreciate all of the donations that you have made! It will definitely help us pay some bills as I have not been able to work for 6 months! This has been a very rough time for my family and very hard on myself personally. I have been through chemo therapy and radiation and I am currently done with that form of torture. I am 3 months past that stuff and just found out that I am currently in remission which means I am cancer free as of now! I do still have some bad side effects from the radiation but it pails in comparison to what I had before the treatment. So once again thanks to everyone who made a donation and some who even made more than one donation! Very cool bunch of guys on this site! Derek has another tombstone weight from John brrly1 that is being raffled off on Sunday so you still have a few more days to make a donation and get another chance at a weight or a flat screen tv, a gas card or a Red Lobster gift card! So get ahold of him or Mike for details. Thanks to God and Thanks to all of you! Now maybe I can get back to my favorite hobby! Keith Hammerhead Jones Ps. To the moderators, if you could leave this post here under Wheel Horse Tractors for a long while, so more members could read it, I would appreciate that. Thanks

4 pointsHi All, I bought this c105 back in august, but never got around to posting any pictures of it. When I got it, it didn't run so I didn't know much about it. It turned out to run great, but smoke terrible, it looked like the whole neighborhood was on fire when it ran for 10 mins. lol In the deal I also got another c105 which I sold to AJ, and a c125 parts tractor, that had a 12 horse I was told was blown up. The kohler actually ended up being a good motor, so just yesterday I swapped it on. It was a hydro rear end so I did the pulley swap like martin did on his, it does make them a little bit quicker. It sounds like the belt is rubbing now, but it may be the idler pulley, it always made some noice...I will have to find another pulley on try it. I also swapped one of the newer style fender pans on it as the plastic one was shot. Anyways, this isn't the prettiest tractor to look at, but here it is. Thanks, Jake

3 pointsWhile looking through CL last month, I spotted an ad for an interesting tiller only an hour away. I recognized the brand and was pleasantly surprised with the photos. It wasn't just a tiller, it was a United Farm Tools "Mountaineer" with the tiller attachment. The deal was actually made three weeks ago but weather, trips to the hospital (not me!), etc. prolonged the event. There were only about 1,300 tractors manufactured by the L&G division of UFT in Charleston, West Virginia. The Mountaineer was designed by former Gravely employees and corrected some of the engineering idiosyncrasies of the Gravely. It has eight forward ground speeds and four reverse. The powertrain can be disconnected which eliminated Gravely creep plus it has headlights among other improvements. They used Kohler 8 and 12 hp K-series engines. A number of attachments were produced including a three blade 40" mower deck. The interesting part is that the mounting was identical to the Gravely so powered attachments could be interchanged between the brands. This is an 88E with an electric start K-181S. The serial tag is missing but I dated the engine to 1980. It currently doesn't run plus has two flat tires. It made for an interesting move. The starting point had a forklift whereupon it slipped off and tumbled onto its side in the dirt. Didn't want to record that poo-poo, but there was no damage. Then when I got it to the house, I needed to utilize "Cisco" with the HF crane along with Scott's and Tom's receiver hitch plus crane adapter. (The tractor weighs 445 pounds so that speaks well for the hitch and adapter!) It actually went a lot better than I had expected on my end. I lowered it onto HF car dollies after lifting it out of the trailer until I can get to the tires. The weather also cooperated with 72 degrees on December 1st! The tractor is in surprisingly good shape externally. The colors look like a Kubota-orange with medium dark metallic blue. Hopefully it was something minor that sidelined it as parts for the tractor portion will be next to nil on availability. I never thought that I would see one due to being unique yet alone own one. It will probably be a project next year as there are three tractors ahead of it right now. Here is a brochure: http://gravelymanuals.com/pdf/Mountaineer_Tractor_And_Attachments.pdf

3 pointsStarted another project this fall, I decided to install a 10 HP Chinese Diesel in a rescued C85. I worked a good price from Carroll Stream this spring on an engine and when I picked up the C85 in WV, I thought that would make a good fit. And like everything else I do, it got a little carried away! Frist thought was making a worker, now slowly turning into a show pony. The C85 black hood worked well because of the vast room under the hood. I made up threaded mounting blocks from 3/8†bar stock for mounting the engine. The engine was too close to the top of the hood to allow the compression release to rotate; I made a new hood hinge and raised the hood 3/4â€. A small teak on the side of the hood using a bar clamp and that made enough room to clear the air cleaner. Then came new paint, tires, a stack, (with chrome tip), a sleeve hitch and much more. It is now about 90% now. Hope to be done next month; I will shoot more pics when completed. Thanks for looking. Joe

3 pointsWith the snow we had here over the Turkey holiday, it brought down quite a few branches around the farmhouse. One biggie coming right across the front of my Durango and YJ about a foot away from the front bumpers on both. I decided that the remaining branch and to exit before I had an insurance claim. We were supposed to do it with the Bobcat Saturday but it was more important to get the grain dryer running again. 280 acres of corn to harvest and we can't seem t get it below 20% moisture. The mill bangs us for anything over 16% so the dryer took precedent over the 2 foot wide x 20' long tree branch. Well Sunday morning after I sighted the 30-06 I got a bug up my butt after seeing freezing rain in the forecast and decided the branch was coming down before it cost me financially. I got out the 10' ladder, chainsaw and trimmed some pesky branches before getting th big guy. I climbed the ladder with my trusty Farm Boss in hand and made my bottom cut then attacked it from the top. I was cutting slowly so that i could more or less just lay the far end down and then cut through the back by the trunk to complete it and the clean up. I was doing nice and the branch was slowly lowering down, then SNAP!!!! It broke off, falling the 14 feet down breaking the ladder like a toothpick and sending me flying ass over tin cups. Somehow I realized this was going to end badly and threw the saw away as I flew upside down. I landed on my left arm/wrist, shoulder, back of my head and somehow my right leg got twisted under me and landed on the ladder remnants. I laid there on the ground for a second moving appendages, wiping the blood from my leg and running down my neck from my head wound where it hit. I got up walked inside and asked my girlfriend who graduates as a doctor in 2 weeks to make sure everything was where it belonged and help me clean up. After my exam I have a stage II strain/sprain of my lower forearm, soft tissue damage in the same area from the impact of a 240 pound guy on an itty bitty wrist, scratch on the back of my head from the rock I landed on but no concussion. Right leg ok just scraped up. I'll be fine but my forearm and wrist is 3 times its normal size from the trauma. Gonna be ok, just completely useless as a productive appendage for the near future. Its wrapped and Iced as much as I can while working full time. It could be worse as I have no healthcare until January...This wasn't meant to be a pity party for me but an educational post. I have been cutting trees for the better part of 25 years, done some really stupid things without any planning and never got hurt...even when you plan...stuff happens that surprises you. 14 feet in the air is not the place to be without a contingency plan. I wont be splitting wood anytime soon as its hard with 1 hand to load the splitter and stack it up. I will have to find a new plan for heat at least for a couple weeks until my wing can flap again..but at least I am still here and I threw the saw so it didnt cut me in half

3 pointsI decided to place a new Wheel Horse Snowblower Belt on my Wheel Horse STR-324 Snowblower used on my 1967 Wheel Horse Lawn Ranger today. I had three NOS belts that I bought over the last few years and although my snowblower worked fine last year and ran well when I checked it recently I figured a five year old belt had to been stretched out some. It took about ten minutes to replace and I am good to go. I hope there will be a little boost in performance this year! I always tell folks the old Lawn Ranger ( 6 HP Tecumseh H-60 motor) snowblower won't throw the snow 30 feet like the newer tractors with bigger motors, etc but I still don't have to shovel the snow and it is fun to operate on this Lawn Ranger!

3 pointsI took some work parts to the local machine shop, and while turning around in the back lot I spotted this wheelhorse C-161 in the tall grass with lots of other old stuff.. After some negotiation I went back after work today and picked it up along with an antique boat motor. The C161 has decent tires, so they may go on my 312-8. will the 8" from rims fit in place of the 6" rims on the 312.. I've got to finish my 312-8 project. For now, it's going to get stored in a barn at the farm,. Then again I could be interested in doing some trading for a round hood! If I'm reading these ID tags right, is this a 1978 C-161 with a 1979 Kohler motor ? This is the antique boat motor. there is no name or ID tag. Anybody have an idea what it is? I would like to clean the motor up, paint it the right colors and mount it on the :Wal Boatl" I built for my game room several years ago!

3 pointsI normally don't respond to these posts but here it goes. It doesn't bug me so much that you buy and sell things at a high rate. What irritates me is all these posts you put up here in the general section "check out what i just brought home/added to the herd/etc." as if i am supposed to come here and congratulate you (which I normally would), intending ONLY to peddle your wares. Congratulations, you you got a neat looking _______. Seriously, MANY people buy and sell things on here at an incredible rate and everyone knows it, so you cant act like the victim. Most just do it with dignity. I speak only for myself, consider that my final word on the matter.

2 pointsHi All, Didn't think I was going to tear into this one for a while, but ended up taking it apart today. I sure wish they were all in this shape! I got this trans in a deal a couple of years ago and its just been sitting. I am going to rebuild this for a 400 I'll be restoring in the future. All gears are in great shape. A few of the bearings are shot but some are usable. I have all the bearings and seals to rebuild a trans, so I will change them I didn't get many pictures, but here's what I got. Will get more pictures of when its all cleaned up. Thanks, Jake

2 pointsGood point, but for me personally, the one on the right all the way. Real clean looking, not too busy, and if you're in my garage and not sure what a WH is....We'' bust out some beverages and get-cha-learned!! I do like the LED lighting idea, and curious to see how that works out. $60 is a good price in my book.

2 pointsHere's what I did on the back of my 854. The rear red light turns on with the headlights, (also a new install). The back-up light works off a switch I mounted by the tranny shifter. (Not my idea but works great 4 years later). ">http:// ">http:// ">http://

2 pointsUp date, Broken stuff or stuff that does not work correctly drives me nuts so this afternoon it took the shafts apart. I was not planning on doing anything till middle of the week, so much for that. I had 2 -1/8 thick washers on it and it would only lift the blower off the ground 5/8 of an inch. Then I went to 4 washers no real improvement. So I cut a piece of pipe with the same id as the flag shaft, I cut it 2 1/2 long that was too long and I could not get the little stud through the hole in the lift tube assembly. So I cut it back to 2 inch's and tried that. Still too long So I ended up with a piece about 3/4 of and inch long with a 1/8 " thick washer on each end of the pipe or close to 1" all told maybe a little more. The blower will lift now about 5 inch's off the hot top. Now to just use it and see if it works as it should. If It works good all winter then when I take it off this spring I will weld the pipe and washers together so it is one solid spacer. Then I will wear it around my neck so I do not forget it next year !

2 pointsWhat have I said about "your" (and gumshoes)signs that has offended you? Wasn't it you that PM'd me for my thoughts on these signs...which I shared with you there...and you chose not to reply to. Just curious...Is there something in public that you want to have out with me?
-
2 pointsYes it is a tall chute and yes I did remove the extension. The snow the other day was extra heavy and wet in Western, MA and the extension had some internal rust and even with oil sprayed into it, it kept clogging. I removed the chute and got much better results. I plan on smoothing out the extension a bit and repainting the inside and then putting it back into it's proper place.

2 pointsThese could be done with super bright red LED's (or many other colors) and probably make them pop even more (and make them compatible internationally) Are you building these or just reselling them? If you are building them we can chat about making a new base for them, I'm an engineer that specializes in lighting...

2 pointsThese Jenny's aren't powerhouses. If the power is out, run your fridge enough to reach temp and then shut it off. Be conservative getting in and out of it. Plug it in every couple of hrs. Same with the furnace. If you need to have your game boys and T. V. On all day, get a stand by whole house jenny.

2 pointsTime to revive this old thread. Trailer came out last week. Quite a teaser if you ask me. Love the shots of the X-wing and Mill-Falcon. Bits of everything I'd like to see from the days of old. With Disney's money backing up the graphics and such, I'm hoping this one is a home run. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMOVFvcNfvE

1 pointHodge...when I read this, it is exactly what happened to me a few years ago. I threw my chain saw and it did not even have a mark on it...ladder disappeared...fell 15 feet. I spent 3 weeks in the hospital. My advise...you are lucky to be OK...embrace your time in any rehab...realize you were stupid (as I was)...make the best of your situation, and make a great come back.

1 pointI finally spent a little time on this today. A PO bypassed the pto lever switch. There there two wires that were four wires (orange, yellow, tan and green I think) They came lose and once I looked the the wiring diagram I figured out which ones were crossed. connected and crimped the correct wires back and she fired right off like it is used to doing. Now I need to mount the smaller tires with chains and get ready to push some snow with it.

1 point1. Kohler single cylinder, easy to work on. strong and durable. 2. Honda, Quiet, reliable. and very low maintenance.
