I'm putting the cart before the horse on this one but I wanted to thank forum member COD (Steve) for loaning me a defective WH418a indicator pcb to develop a repair test fixture. Steve, I will post the full "story" behind the repair but I wanted to let you know how your contribution will make it possible to effectively and economically repair and upgrade indicator boards for WH 300 and 400 series tractors . Many more secrets have been given up as to how the indicator board functions and what the various failure modes are for the individual components on the board. I was able to make modifications to the circuitry to VASTLY increase the reliability of the board assembly. I'm sure the test jig will evolve as I investigate any wiring changes need to accommodate the 300 series tractors. Right now wires are everywhere!

Tom, one of the owners of Boyden & Perron of Amherst, MA, the Master Toro/Wheel Horse dealer who sold me my 1998 314-8 Wheel Horse Garden Tractor came out in the middle of a snow storm, at night, after a full day of work, the night before Thanksgiving to fix my tractor when it broke down after 30 feet of snow blowing. Turns out, when I got out of the cab, I kicked the gear shift which caused the safety switch to turn off the engine - as expected. I'm a big guy and new to the more compact nature of the WH controls and the confines of a snow cab. Apparently, when that happened, the magnetic part on the gear shift broke off. I'm new to wheel horse and had no idea and since I only had the tractor for just shy of 24 hours and I was standing in the dark in the snow with now way to get my car up the driveway (it's a Honda and doesn't like steep grades and snow - both describing my driveway), I gave them a call figuring he could walk me through some stuff on the phone. He did but none of it helped, so to my surprise he came out. Unfortunately, when he got to my house, because it was dark and snowing and the mailbox is in between my driveway and my neighbors and a bit confusing, he chose the wrong driveway and being even steeper than mine and not plowed, he slid off into a ditch. He than walked over to my house to get my tractor working again (we jumped out the gear shift switch) and then he called a co-worker to get him home. Unfortunately, he had driveways to plow with that tuck and couldn't get it out until Thanksgiving. Some time on Thanksgiving morning, when he came to get his truck out, he delivered my tractors bagger tube that got left behind when he delivered the tractor. I felt SOOOOO bad for Tom but that just speaks volumes about the level of service you get from Boyden & Perron! I can't recommend them enough! Here's a video of the poor guy testing out the tractor to make sure all was ok (and probably to kill time waiting to be picked up).

I got up at 6am this morning and headed to Jason's to drop off a few tractors and then Jason and myself hopped in my van and headed all the way to Cape Cod to pick up something I have always wanted.. It's not NOS but it does have only 250 hrs. on it. She wasn't very well cared for in the cosmetic dept. but it is complete and she does run strong. The engine oil was full and pretty clean so that made me feel pretty good.Very rarely do I ever see a 420 come up for sale. When I knew Jason was buying the 420 I made my offer to Jason and he accepted it. It was as easy as that. I'm happy with what I got on my end and I'm pretty sure he is as well. As for the 417 or 520 being on C/L all I can say is at the end of the day the bills gotta get paid and i hope he does well on them...

Started another project this fall, I decided to install a 10 HP Chinese Diesel in a rescued C85. I worked a good price from Carroll Stream this spring on an engine and when I picked up the C85 in WV, I thought that would make a good fit. And like everything else I do, it got a little carried away! Frist thought was making a worker, now slowly turning into a show pony. The C85 black hood worked well because of the vast room under the hood. I made up threaded mounting blocks from 3/8†bar stock for mounting the engine. The engine was too close to the top of the hood to allow the compression release to rotate; I made a new hood hinge and raised the hood 3/4â€. A small teak on the side of the hood using a bar clamp and that made enough room to clear the air cleaner. Then came new paint, tires, a stack, (with chrome tip), a sleeve hitch and much more. It is now about 90% now. Hope to be done next month; I will shoot more pics when completed. Thanks for looking. Joe

I drove most of the night to pick up this Wheelhorse for my 10-year-old son's Christmas present last night. He has always wanted this particular model so I was fortunate to find it so close to Christmas. He is now old enough that he actually gets on Red Square looks photos, so I can't show you the whole tractor, but just a little bit from the rearview mirror will be enough to give it away for those who know their horses. Now don't go blurting out what model it is......and ruin the surprise!! One tired dad......

you may have seen this one on Ebay..but being I make frequent trips to Iowa, I thought I'd go ahead and grab it. Appears to be an early Lawn Ranger and The guy that I bought it from said his uncle bought it new in the early 60's. He wasn't sure what year it really was, but said it had been sitting a long time. Looks to be in rough shape...but there's a good chance I may attempt a restore on it because I've always wanted one of these early rangers for my collection. Here's a few pics of it when it came home .

We did it this year. The caption under it (after it was printed) is: "We're dreaming of a white Christmas"

I Agree with others...that is a 61 551 . That looks to be very well maintained over the years. If It were mine, I would just do a good clean up on it, and you would be surprised on how much nicer it will look....maybe go through mechanical stuff, and paint the seat and wheels. I also have heard of people using steel wool and wd40 and bringing back paint. Maybe stevebo will see this thread, he has also oiled down some of his tractors and made them look great again. This is your tractor, do it how you want, but they are only original once.

I just had to post this little experience............... I have had my C-175 setup for blowing snow only for a some time now. It was my plow tractor since I bought it in the 1980's. Since 2008 I have always mounted the plow on my 310-8. I noticed some slipping on the 310 during my last mow of the year so I need to investigate it. (Belt or hub slip). This year, I put the plow on the 416-8 with the Onan. Wow! What a huge difference between the two and especially with the very heavy/wet 5 to 6 inches we got from that nor'ester earlier this week. I forgot how the twins and especially the Onan can drum up power under a load. Not knocking the K and Mag Kohlers! The most dependable small engines anywhere but.......wow! It was fun again to push that slop!

Very nice 551 with all the goodies which most of the time, are usually missing. Hopefully that engine is in decent condition. H55s are getting tougher to find. IMO they are more valuable as original vs a restored tractor so agree with the others about cleaning it up and keeping it original. Restore all the mechanical stuff and start cutting the grass again like you did when you were a kid!

I've been wanting to include a 520-H stallion in my herd since seeing some run at the WHCC Show this year. So, I took a 150 total mileage road trip today and picked up this 1990 520-H from "Shallowwatersailor" John. This particular tractor was previously owned by "Cable" as well. So, we're kinda keeping it in the RedSquare community... just moved it from MD to PA. This is my 11th Wheel Horse that I have adopted since acquiring my dad's original 1962 Wheel Horse from my uncle for free just over three years ago. Five of my "horse" purchases have come from local C-list posts. I have acquired five of them from some of the nicest Wheel Horse folks here on RedSquare. So, thanks to guys like "Shallowwatersailor", "buckrancher", "fireman", Big Jake", and "Jdog_kustoms" for giving me the opportunity to grow my collection of various Wheel Horse tractors.

Found this on Craigslist.....about an hour away. PO listed it for $450 ....picked it up for $380. Test drove it .....seems fine. PO got it for free and it was parked for a very long time by the original owner. (rusty and dirty) The brackets for the bagger are still attached. Needs a good cleanup from all the debris in the engine bay and transmission area. I could use a clean and clear picture of the motion linkage from a 416H if possible. PO took things apart and well it was clear he lost quite a few nuts and bolts.

You gotta run what ya brung. 25-8-12 utv tires, if you want to move when the tires spin. Best tire investment yet. Best because: 1. Tallest tire you can fit in the fender without mods. 2. Nice fit on a 7 1 /2" rim. 3. 6 ply. 4. Don't need chains.

I'm super happy with what I got from ken ! I know he is that's what counts. He's a great dude that is only one of the few on here understand what and why I sell etc and still enjoy the wheel horse machines as Much as any one. Some are not replaceable . I do regret some sales but when I buy my house this upcoming year and have a garage to myself I'm sure I will hoard them as much as I sell them now. As my inbox Will fill up lol there all available... but at the end of the day that 420 lse ended up in the hands of a ken who will do nothing but right for it!

Thanks James Yesterday was the day the last bit of the original Wh chassis was removed.. The new chassis certainly looks cleaner without the old rails inside The front end is starting to take shape. The big box across the front will become the new front axle after it has had a change of shape, some strengthening and something added to give it a real Hot rod look Oh... And I found a spare plug yesterday

Me and my family have 10 acres at Stockton Lake we have two wheel horses down there now a C-121 and a C-110 I think I will give the 308-8 a good cleaning and service and it will make a good addition down there it has a strong motor that I rebuilt 2 years ago when my dad first purchased it

I read this old thread and just installed this pump on my C-81. It had a newer plastic mechanical fuel pump on it when I bought the tractor, however it looses its prime the longer it runs at high speed, and from sitting a while. I think engine heat eventually affects these newer cheaply made pumps and they just don't perform consistently after awhile. Some last, some don't. The cheapest price I found for a replacement was $40, so I looked up this electric low pressure Airtex pump on Amazon after reading this old thread and found a new one for $23 with free shipping. There are plenty of reviews on Amazon also of guys using them on other small engine applications with great results. I decided to go this route and give it a try. I wired it up to my switch circuit and put a fuse inline. It only draws a couple of amps so no need to install anything else for this application. It's a real clean looking install and mounted nicely. Now it supplies plenty of fuel with the turn of the switch and fires up instantly. I let it run for about 30 minutes at different speeds with no issues at all. Mine measured just 2.8 pounds of pressure so I see no need to add a pressure regulator. I look forward to using it now. I don't like to revive old threads, but I just wanted to give this low pressure pump another thumbs up. For the price I felt it was the way to go on this working tractor.

Stop fooling around with it and remove the head. Probably needs to have the carbon removed from the head and block. Then put a new head gasket on it and torque it to specifications. When you remove the head, take some photos of the top of the block. That will tell us a lot as to what is going on.

Well today I finally started working on Why Not again which felt rather nice after weeks of bench building and getting the new house sorted out.. This is what she looked like when I arrived in the workshop this morning.. It didn't take long to get her stripped down to an almost naked chassis.. The front axle soon came off followed by the front of the chassis!!! So why did I cut the front of the chassis off? Well, after much thought I have decided to remove what was left of the original chassis, the main reason being strength which is a nice thing to have plenty of with all the hp the engine produces.. It also looks quite out of place with the rest of the box chassis rails. But before I can remove all the original chassis, I need to add some new chassis rails each side.. A bit hard to see from the photo's but the new rails gradually tuck in under the engine and straighten up at the front again for the new front axle I'm going to make.. Not a huge amount of progress, but it's a start

Hey Brian, don't throw out all your bent and broken parts. By the time you are finished you will have a complete set of patterns to build another one!!!!!!....... very nice work by the way, piece by piece, exactly how i would expect you to handle it. this old girl has been waiting for somebody like you to once again make her look and operate like she did a long time ago.

Most of you here don't know that I do woodworking on the side. I have shipped pieces all over the world - and have a nice collection of woodworking tools. However some are used more than others. Anytime I need to do a Hole bigger than 3" but smaller than 6" I have to use a Circle Cutter that goes into the drill Press. Its basically a center bit, and a adjustable Arm with a Dagger Knife on the end. The center bit keeps it located as the Knife swings around and cuts through the wood in a Circle. Almost like a Power Chisel. Well .. this is such a rarely used tool, I forgot one time, about the knife that swings around. My left hand was inside the arc and while I did get it back from where it was, I wasn't totally clear of the knife. It cut my Middle finger from the First Knuckle, up the side, over the big knuckle, moved the tendon, exposed the bone, and up into the top of my hand before I could get it out of the machine. When I first pulled it back I didn't realize the damage that had been done. Headed to the house, Rinsed the blood off, saw bone, and in a panic, wrapped my shirt around my hand, jumped in my pickup (Its a Manual Shift btw) and DROVE MYSELF to the hospital that's 9 miles away. When I walked in, the lady working the desk told me to have a seat and wait that they were a bit busy. I untangled my shirt from my hand and all the could see was blood...I was IMMEDIATELY given a room. haha They Did a Xray to make sure that I Didn't fracture anything, and while waiting for the tech I was running my right index finger up/down the exposed bone (i mean really how many times in our life can we touch our own bones while they are still IN place?). She told me that if I didn't stop she was gonna get sick...haha I really don't recall the number of stitches it took but I think it was around 20 ... he did a very good job of sewing. Three years later, the scar is smaller. I still have almost no feeling on the top of my hand, have limited strength to it, and haven't been able to hold a pinstriping brush, or my airbrush (i'm left handed) since ... Though I plan to start learning again. I also Drop things a lot with that hand ... gets frustrating sometimes. Moral of the story? LOOK BEFORE YOU FLIP THE SWITCH! You're digits might thank you later!

Those are all very nice looking machines. I like to wheel and deal farm and lawn equipment, automotive parts, etc. It's a fun hobby and I enjoy rotating some things in and out here and there. I have traded my way up into some real nice things in the process and the hobby self sustains itself by doing so. It keeps it interesting. No harm in having fun and enjoying yourself! Good trades guys.

As I said above, there is no set height in these tires. A set height would have 3 numbers in the tire size. When they went to a 3 number system, the (new) number was the first one telling you the height. There is absolutely no difference in a 6-12 (6" wide 12'rim) and a 6.00-12 (6" wide 12" rim), 6.00 inches is 6 inches. I think you are just missing the decimal point that can be removed and then a 6.00 would equal 6.0 or 6 when we are talking inches of width. Miller Tire has a page on this here - http://www.millertire.com/faqs/ FAQs HOW TO READ YOUR TIRE SIZE… If your tire size has two sets of numbers (6-12, 5.00-15, 11.2-24…) the first number (5.00-15) is the approximate width in inches; the second number (5.00-15) is the rim diameter. If your tire size has three sets of numbers (15x6.00-6, 26x12.00-12, 31x15.50-15) the first number (26x12.00-12) is the approximate height, the second number (26x12.00-12) is the approximate width, and the third number (26x12.00-12) is the rim diameter.

Hi all, I picked up the tin parts from the bodyshop man today! They turned out great he bead blasted the parts before painting. Cheesegrader, to get the dent out by the headlight, he took two rubber handle hammers. He put the rubber handle against the dent and pounded it out. I thought that was a great idea. I'll post better pictures tomorrow of the painted parts. I matched the paint from my 75 C-100. So the paint has more red in it than the original paint. Paint code, RS910 IB Spectramaster Red, Dupont Urethane Ful-Thane 2K
