Happy Thanksgiving to you also. I thank God everyday that I am on top of the ground instead of below it. My family, friends,my freedom..... So many things. Thanks to those who protect and serve everyday.

This year my family let me use my 857 as our prop in our holiday card, am I the only one that has done this?

He can't do that! It would match all the tractors and then he would never find it when he needed it. Then he would sit on it one day and get one of them wires stuck up the ole kiester!

ground and unground bearings in your transmission ground bearings are precision ground to a mirror finish for very tight size tolerance and fit unground bearings have a larger size tolerance and fit they have a much wider range of misalignment they can handle over the ground bearings you can feel this in your hand by the movement between the inner and outer bearing races the wheel horse 3 piece trans cases are not pinned in alignment like the newer cast two piece trans cases when you look at a disassembled 3 piece trans you can see where the different bearing types are used. The ground bearing are where they can be kept in truer alignment like the input shaft and the unground style is used to take up any misalignment between the case pieces side to side you can buy both bearing types from mcmaster-carr in the correct sizes Brian

You can bypass everything by running a jumper from the battery pos directly to the + on the coil. If it starts you'll know it's before the coil, if not it's after. I like splitting the system in two to find out what direction to go with when I start testing. Most problems on those do end up at that white 9 pin connector though.

I added permanent tie down points to my 854. When I tie her down in the pick up I no longer scratch the paint. who ever came up with this idea, thanks it was a good one.

When I tear out a large electric motor they usually have lifting ears on them in various shapes. I save them and bolt them on at the same location. I paint them red and they almost look like they belong there.

All of the above! Thankful to have a roof over my head, food to eat, a loving wife, and last but not least, my tractors to keep my little bit of sanity somewhat intact! Lol. :-P

Stop fooling around with it and remove the head. Probably needs to have the carbon removed from the head and block. Then put a new head gasket on it and torque it to specifications. When you remove the head, take some photos of the top of the block. That will tell us a lot as to what is going on.

Update: After 4 days and a 1/2 can of PB Blaster I was able to remove both bolts without breaking them off. Like Martin said take you time. Thanks to everyone for your help. Donnie

Thankful first for my family. Then to all our brave men and women serving in the armed forces. Who proudly stand a post at night somewhere around the world and say to us all, sleep well, nothing will happen to you on my watch. God bless you all and thank you for your service.

What comes to mind for me is a Lawn tractor is made for nothing more than lawn type duties, a Garden tractor is made for more serious duty like pulling garden type equipment.

got the drive belt in the mail today, so went out and finished up everything on the blower. got the chain all set up, cut the length to 51 links like the original, lined up all the sprockets with shim washers and installed the chain. double checked all my bolts, installed cotter pins in all the areas i temporarily put hairpins and gave the whole blower a good spray down with quick wax. chain, idlers etc installed.... new belt fresh from ebay, this one was $20 in a sealed bag, not sure what they run at the dealer, probably more i would guess. chain guards on. all done.... came inside to get a bite to eat and after a while look out the back window to see Kent out on the back driveway with a shovel messing up all my test snow........ so i finished up my lunch and went out there, but not before putting my coat and slippers on. i thought to myself how dare he exert energy! i was wondering if he was feeling ok, working and all.......after all he is a teenager, what will he be up to next????? actually i already know the answer to that, having 4 others that have gone through those years already...... anyway, i said to him to stop that working thing immediately, he might break out in a sweat and I'm sure he didn't want that to happen. i did manage to get him to hold my phone for a few minutes while i tested out the blower on what was left on the driveway (which wasn't very much-darn kids......)

Swapped out the tired and broken tecumseh for the harbor freight 6.5hp predator. I know it seems kinda wrong to put a Chinese motor on an American tractor but it's a great option to get the tractor back to work. The swap was pretty easy, here are some pictures. Feel free to ask any specific questions if you are thinking about doing this.

You guys know it's only a matter of time before I have a complete shop, equipment included... Gonna get Terry to make a decal for it. Started on it yesterday, will wrap it up tomorrow. Think this will void my warranty?

Any other users here? I just got one in the mail today for my 856. Can anyone confirm what setting I should be running it at? I tried 720 and 360. They both seem to be giving me odd readings. one is to low so I have to idle it up and at that point it sounds like its running higher then recommended. the other setting is opposite....I have to idel down to the point the idle screw is no longer even making contact. I don't know why but I have this fear of running this engine.......it just sounds so much louder then I remember it being prior to the rebuild. granted its been a a few years since ive heard it run. At 3000rpm according the tach this thing sounds like its ripping. I don't want to blow her up. Not to sound like an idiot but does a 4cyl single spark every rotation?

Happy thanksgiving everyone. Dang....while I've popped in a few times here and there it's been almost 2 years since I've posted on this site. Lots of lifes crap was bestowed on me over this time. Besides being buried up to my eyes in work, extracting myself from a screwed up relationship, I also went through a long illness with my mom who passed on 2 months ago. Sometime life sucks....but it sure beats the alternative. I still have my 2 horses....though I have added a few other "animals" to flock. Hopefully I'll have some more time this coming year to annoy a few of you... Speaking of annoying....is that funny girl still here?..What was her name? Amy? April?...oh well it'll come to me. Anywhoo...got to catch up on some reading about how some of you handled the latest storm...besides a little sleet, it missed me completely.

Thank you Brian . Now it makes a lot more sense to me and I notice the difference like you mentioned between the two different types. Having then ground bearings installed on case sides would probably be an issue since sides are not keyed to each other using only center section for that. All three parts would have to be really precision built to each other which is not the case with this type transmission.

The only issues I have seen is not taking proper care of the trans with proper oil changes, tightening the hubs, and keeping the cooling fins clean. I have a few sunstrand and Eaton 1100's and with proper care, they will last a long time. All of my hydro's are filled with Mobil 1 and it does make a Big Difference in performance and smoothness of operation. For me personally i would buy any WH hydro over a manual trans any day.

I Glad to see another Tecumseh fan out there. These are nice little engines. Just keep the carbs clean buy using Startron or Sea foam. and they will last a long time. I am Also doing over a HH60 I found the parts all Over. Till I found out about L.C.T. Inc They bought out the rights from Tecumseh. There web site has a vintage section I am still looking into that for future use. Enjoy the Ride, Gary B.

I wouldn't even consider today's regular gas a problem in a no start or hard start condition. It's not as good as the older gas (non-ethanol) but I have over 30 of them here that run just fine on it.

B80, as was mentioned. Perfect balance of power, size, weight,

You did have it running, right? When running did it perform well? did you ... say cut grass with it and it did OK? If so then the compression is probably OK. If ran sorta crappy - smoked, didnt seem to have much power, etc then might be weak compression. But, I dont know, I'm still leaning to it being fuel related. Have you been into the carb? when you did the other fuel stuff? If not then its time to get into it and get it cleaned. It may have sat a lot if your G'fathers health got bad, and sitting with todays fuel is BAD for a carb. It could easily simply need a needle and seat replacement in the carb - and a good cleaning! FWIW, a rough and ready compression test is to hold your thumb over the spark plug hole and spin the engine over - but, while a seasoned mechanic can get a rough idea from this, maybe not so much for a newbie :eusa-think: Keep tryin, theres got to be some relief here somewhere!

Martin: I have been using this stuff for about five years on my snowblower auger. It does not build up but does help keep snow moving through the blower and chute! Something to consider.

The garage is just to dern cold. We have had 3 nights below 15 here this week. Anyway, I been getting some small parts off and redoing them at work. moving forward anyway.

I was beginning to think this day would never come, but I actually started my tractor today! I had a few problems with my wiring harness that I had to change and issues with the fuel filter and aftermarket carb, but it fired right up today. Might need a little adjustment, but it's too cold to mess with it today. I was really worried about the wiring, but the safety switches function correctly and the only thing left to wire are the headlights. What does everyone use to clip the wires to the frame? I bought some trailer frame wire clips that look like the original, but can't seem to get them to stay on. I'm probably going to wait till spring for the decals because I don't have heat in my garage.

hi, it been a while since i posted. i got to looking around the last 6-8 months, got an idea, and started laying pieces in a pile for a project. here it is. i guess, you could call it a c-81. it has a c-81 hood and frame. a c-165 8 speed rear axle. a 701 flipped front axle and rear fenders from 1963 short frame. sawmill 8 inch fronts. 25 x 12 atv rears. dropped 6 inches in the front and 4 1/2 in the rear. engine is 18 vanguard. no pre 65 stuff will be modified or cut for this project. this project has a very limited budget. had to buy tubes for rears, and that was tough for me. i dont have money. i do have a welder, a cutting torch, a bunch of junk tractors, and alot of ambition. going to use what i got, and build me a hot rod. jimmy
