If I knew that Wheel Horses would have helped me with dating, I should have started collecting them in High School, or even in the 6th grade ( is that what Scott is doing with his WH club? ).

Wow! If teams from Illinois had that attitude about doughnuts, they could beat teams from Minnesota!

I agree Bob...what these guys are saying about doughnuts is just not right... it is not the doughnut's fault that Iowa sucks...It is not the doughnut's fault that Northwestern can't win when you think it should, or that they win when you think they should loose...it is not the doughnut's fault that Indiana lost both of their 1/4 backs...it is not the doughnut's fault that Purdue has won a couple of games...it's not the doughnut's fault that Minnesota beat Iowa (OH OH...that is this week). ...it is not the doughnut's fault that Penn St can't win in Happy Valley...............and you watch...it is not the doughnut's fault that Maryland and Rutgers have a chance to upset the apple cart. Doughnuts are a way of life, and we should not have relegated them to the basement...meaning you get the doughnut if you lose...rather...you should get the doughnut if you win!! So here I am on my soap box, saying that the doughnuts in this world have been treated unfairly...kind of like the Big 10 this year. Put our best team in the Top Four and squeeze the jelly out of them, we can do this...this is America, this is the NCAA, THIS IS THE BIG TEN. :happy-jumpeveryone:

This is as close as I came to moving any snow last year, or just about any previous year down this way. No snow stuck to the driveway or walkway. No accessories required IE: Socks, boots, cab, chains, weights, gloves or any of that "Cold Weather Gear"! This blade has moved a lot of dirt and gravel over the past 47 years, it might balk at the cold wet stuff. This could very well be it's first contact with snow.

Geno's meet + greet coming to a town near me. Saturday Dec 6 is the day beginning at 9AM! A big one is in the future for next Spring but I thought about what several of you have said on the board, in pm's and on the phone and it makes good sense to try to do something soon to just hang out if nothing else. Big thing of course is the unpredictability of the weather this time of year. I have 3 dates in mind and would like to know how many can come and what date is best for you. If weather totally stinks on the date we pick and you guys want to postpone it a week then that can be done also, I am flexible. If it's not really bad like a snowstorm we can all hang out at the shop, if it's really warm and no rain there is 300 acres to play on right across the street. I assume bringing tractors or whatever will depend largely on the weather, let me know if I'm wrong there. This will be a learning experience for me and will make the big Spring one better. Please let me know a date from the ones below, and if you plan on bringing anything. Blue will be here with the big BBQ outfit serving up the food and Sandra said she may whip up some things as well. Also let me know what type of sides salads you like. Dates - Nov 22 (Sat) REMOVED Nov 29 (Sat. after t-day) REMOVED *** Dec 6 (Sat.) Any other input if I forgot something is appreciated. Saturday Dec 6 is the day beginning at 9AM!

Like the title says, I'm new around here. I'm in western WI and have been looking for a good old garden tractor for a while now to get places in my woods that I can't get to with the full grown farm tractors. I found this old guy on C/L, made a deal on it and brought it home tonight. (This is where I MIGHT get a picture loaded, first time using the software this forum uses, might take a couple tries, bear with me) It had been sitting for a while, the prior owner couldn't get spark. I was prepared to buy it non-running, but I had some time before work, and he'd been working on it already for a while. I figured out that the ammeter was shot and no power was getting past it. Once we bypassed it and used a little air to prime the fuel system, it took off and purred. Helping get it running might have cost me a few dollars in cash (it was a good price, regardless), but it gave me peace of mind that the motor didn't need a ton of work, and that the transmission was working right. Anyhow, it needs some minor stuff I'll get around to as I get time (never enough of that), and I'm sure I'll have questions. It probably won't ever be a show queen, but it's gonna make my life easier cutting firewood, and maybe some other jobs as I get some attachments. It's a bare tractor at the moment. I've got a set of tire chains to cut down that should fit it when I'm done, and extra weight is easy to find at work (I work in a metal fab shop). That should be all it needs for woods duty - might need a little bigger trailer though! It might go to a garden tractor pull or two next summer, never know. Feel free to ask if you got any questions, other than "wanna sell it", 'cause that answer is not just no, but H E double hockey sticks no! If any of you recognize the handle from other forums, say Hi. I use the same handle everywhere I go. Steve Star Prairie, WI (just a little ways outside of the Twin Cities / Minneapolis-St Paul, MN)

Very few of us have the need nor the money to buy expensive testing equipment. I have pierced a lot of wires in my 78 years. It is certainly not the best thing to do and I would never say it was but for the back yard mechanic with limited need for high priced testing tools it will work. I put a piece of rubber tape around it. I think the next time I have to do it I will use a dab of crazy glue along with the tape..

No seriously, if you think its an older model and I am just guessing here but it would be a 1988 or 1989. They lack the forward swept axle and gear reduction steering which could drop the price some. The 1990 had forward swept axle but still no gear reduction steering. 1991 on up was the 520h beast that has the full bells and whistles. Price??? Pictures?? what size/type deck? What kind of snowblower. Single stage tall chute, single stage short chute, two stage?? Once that information is had then i think we can give you a better idea. Good Luck

We all have them! I once couldn't figure out why my tractor didn't start.. Thought about it for what felt like forever. Yeah, I drained the gas a couple nights before.

All you guys are very fortunate to have a wife who also has a keen interest in this hobby. My wife has no clue how many I have as she never takes a peek in both of my sheds. She has no interest in tractors but does allow me to have my time to enjoy tinkering with my hobby. For the record, I have now adopted 9 Wheel Horses in the past 3-1/2 years since I got hooked. When I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was interested in another one on c-list, she was ok with that as long as I don't put it in the garage. So, I take that to mean either it's time to start a second tier level in my larger shed or we're getting new living room furniture.

This may be easier than I thought. I had time to play with the K Series on this tractor! The PM said it wouldn't start. He didn't say how, why or what the failure mode was. It just wouldn't start. Well it sat for a year in the elements and I don't think he garaged it all the time he owned it so after cleaning a mouse nest out of the top of the flywheel, I had to take every connector apart and clean them. The key switch was the worse. (Also found that the tiny wires to the Low Oil Light were corroded off making that light non-repairable). The solenoid was also rusted so no power was going through it. The ground off the battery was also not making good contact. An hour into it, I had juice to the starter and the voltage gauge. Pulled what was left of a badly fouled spark plug and replaced with a new one and tested for spark which I had. Motor oil actually looked good and was at the full mark! Popped the plug in and gave it a shot of ether and it fired. Next was to see what the fuel lines were like. I barely touched an in-line fuel filter at the fuel pump inlet and the fuel filter fell apart along with real dark gasoline in the lines. I siphoned the fuel that was left in the tank and it was totally black. Not gummy or foul smelling. Just black. So I know I need to flush the tank and replace the fuel line but I needed to know if the engine would run! I put a small 4 inch piece of fuel line on the fuel pump inlet and filled it with gas and leaving it higher than the inlet and then gave it another shot of ether and it fired right up and ran nice as could be. No knocks or weird sounds other than the drive belt banging around under the belt guard. (Probably a rusted idler). A little smoke when I cranked up the RPM's all the way but it was only during the transition. Not bad for as long as it sat! I'm happy. I already know I'll have a Bi*#@ of a time tearing everything apart. I had to use my easy-outs on three of the four bolts holding the tunnel cover on to get to the key switch and clutch switch. All in all, not too bad for fifty bucks!

Thanks for all the info. I will probably just get it running and show it as is behind my suburban 400 that Stevasaurus and others helped me to get back into usable condition. I am always amazed at all the helpful members on this site and the amount of knowledge you all are willing to share.

Installed mine today while we had one last warm day. I like the look, just hope they hold up. Time will tell! Only paid about $2.50 for the vinyl runner from Lowes and around $5 for the adhesive. I still have enough to make another pair!

Update, the new Kohler OEM Fuel Pump gasket fixed the engine oil leak and I have gotten the GT 14 to a point where she is a going to stay until spring, running well and will be easy to get her ready for mowing next spring... pics attached. Thanks to all my fellow Wheelers for all the help provided!

Last night we were back at it. Wow are those new tools coming in real handy! We are big time now! The weather was cool and good enough for us to be out in the fresh air turning wrenches and making some dust! We had a couple teachers stop by and snap some photos of the kids. I took a few and they sent some others to add to the collection. The two painted/powder coated tractors are getting close to being done! Much of the focus was kept on the essay contest B-80. Disassembly commenced with some muscle and determination. Here ya go..... Thank you so much to all of you who follow this thread. The kids will check in periodically to see your feedback and your "likes" of the project. We are giving our best effort and are continuing to move forward. Tune in next week to check out the fun!

I think We'll be working on the 22nd ... (i'll know for sure monday on that) but the other dates are good for me ... I'll bring one of my tractors just for the heck of it ... even if it's just to say that I had one of my tractors in Geno's shop ... or for a group photo (cause you know ) Looking forward to doing some Q and spending some time hanging out talking Horse!

Thanks for the welcome, everyone! From the 71-08K801 serial number, it looks to be a 77 model, correct? I got the IPL and wiring diagram downloaded last night, before my wireless internet went haywire. It seems to be back up now, I'll go back for whatever I missed. Great resource here! Thanks to a friend, I got it out of the truck without a hernia - I don't have ramps and I didn't think to use the loader tractor to lift it out (I heard something somewhere once about working smarter, not harder, but I don't know what that means...) After testing out the granny low transmission - I suspect my first attachment (once "fun funds" recover) will be a tiller. I've got a lot of rough spots I'm trying to tame into a decent lawn, and that'd be pretty handy. I could also quit hooking the 3 bottom plow up for 3 passes every spring for the garden. I hooked on the little firewood trailer and snapped some more pics.

If the engine was installed with the PTO in the same location their won't be a problem. If not you might need different length drive belts. I don't know what the PTO heigth is on a C-161. I installed a Vanguard 18 HP in my C-120 and used original belts. I had to raise the engine 7/8" to get the PTO at the right height.

Kewl ...! I've got a Cyclone - I have just finished adapting it to my C-175 black hood, hope to see how it performs with my 48" deck later this week. Have had it on a Yard Man for about 10 yrs and it had run the course, and I had recently got the 175 and the deck refurbed. I put some hi-lift blades on it, hoping for good results. I have pine trees galore and the Cyclone is the only thing that Ive found that will do a pretty good job of sucking the needles. I had to improvise a hitch to tow it and also had to modify the chute to fit on the horse deck.

Kudzu, I think your talking about the way the motor looks in the first pics after I brought it home. I asked if it was only mounted w two bolts ie the first pics w out hood. Then the folks here told me that two of the bolts were mounted from underneth the motor which they were after i looked. Had never noticed that w my c-101 or 414-8 because they had hoods. Just goes to show you your never to old to learn something new! And really glade the guys here showed me how to ajust the Hydro lever to stay in place... WOW I wasnt sure I wanted to keep this tractor until I got that working... Its a joy to drive. Plus had already told the Boy it was HIS new tractor!

Sorry about the wrong link. Fixed now. There looks to be extra wires in the diagrams but if you follow them they are joined to another at the engine in the diagram. They likely are not connected together on the engine side of the connector. The dark green wire on the M14 is the AC output from the stator and it goes to the lights only. You need to disconnect the feed to your headlamp switch and connect it to that green lead. The lights will work only when the M14 runs. I think the rest of the wires function the same except there are color changes. The light blue and dark blue on the M14 low oil switch go to the orange and tan on the 312-8. If you get this circuit wrong the starter won't work. The white wire with the diode in it from the M14 charging stator goes to the white wire in the connector. The M14 does not use a voltage regulator. There is a dark blue wire from the M14 magneto. Make sure you have identified it. It must go to the pto switch and on to the ignition switch. This wire simply grounds the ignition to stop the engine. Do not allow any battery power into that wire. Since there is more than one dark blue wire leave this one disconnected for now. The engine should run. To shut the engine off ground that wire to the chassis or battery negative terminal. This way if you pick the wrong dark blue wire on the 312-8 no harm done. If everything works as planned hook up the blue magneto wire. Garry

I'm going to use my new to me this year 1973 raider 12 with the single stage short shoot snowblower. Still need to get wheel weights, chains, and hopefully a cab. If anyone has a cab and wheel weights and chains that the would get rid of for a good price let me know. I live in Iowa so it would have to be in or very close (east or north of Iowa).

Well, I thought, since it is November 1st. and I did no mowing in November that I would get things started for the winter season.... Took the deck off, and prepped it for spring, hung it on the back wall of the garage greased the tractor washed and waxed the tractor mounted the snowblower mounted the rear weights - 60lbs Between the rear weights, wheel weights, and myself, there is close to 400lbs. of added weight to the drive axles.. Seemed to really help last year, the additional weight in the back. All I have left is to mount the cab and put the chains on.

Finally got around to installing a foot control on my GT14 Used 5/16 mild steel rod, yoke and ball end. Made a template with a coat hanger and then got to bending. Between the hydro cylinder supports and to the side of vertical lift arm. View of entire rod. Made the pedal from parts on hand. Large hinge and 3/4 square tube. Added a filler piece of pressure treated wood in the steel frame. Field trials coming up.
