We found a forklift last night in Greenfield IN then ran an hour down to Richmond after that to pick up a 953 or 1054, whatever it is. I have all the guards and hood for the tractor along with the right wheels and tires, they're in the truck. The tractor owner also had a cool little dog to play with, my dad used to have one just like her. Can't come home without a of course. I think I will leave the forks alone, just clean them up as they are brass. Now I just have to figure out what should be red and what should be ivory on the soon to be forklift, any ideas?

Hi All, starting another restoration on a 58 RJ. I bought this one in the spring at mentone as a non runner, got it complete and running and then the trans leaked really bad so I took it out to rebuild it. I have since had the tranny out of it for a couple months...it turned out to need a lot of parts. I finally got it back together last weekend, then realized a sideplate was bent so it don't turn over. I did some diggging around and found a perfect set of sideplates that have no rust pitting...I am going to prime them and sand them so they are nice, so the trans is on hold for a while. Tonight I tore the tractor the rest of the way apart. It will be a easy one to restore because there is not really any rust pitting....I will not have to fill any pits, just prime and sand it...and will have to spend some time on the hood as its kind of dented up. It has an original belt guard and heat shield....it has a newer k91 on it, but I have a correct 3/4" exaust k91 with a shower cap muffler I'm going to swap for this engine off a 400. This will be a slow going project because I still have the 57 rj apart. Anyways...here is it as of tonight. Gonna start sandblasting parts tomorrow and getting them ready to be primed. Thanks, Jake

Finally got around to installing a foot control on my GT14 Used 5/16 mild steel rod, yoke and ball end. Made a template with a coat hanger and then got to bending. Between the hydro cylinder supports and to the side of vertical lift arm. View of entire rod. Made the pedal from parts on hand. Large hinge and 3/4 square tube. Added a filler piece of pressure treated wood in the steel frame. Field trials coming up.

Yes... yes I know... I have a wife, a 1.5yr old and one on the way... So my limited time and money prevent most exploits... Not to mention my wifes thoughts on more than one tractor... (Actually shes been surprisingly tolerant of it so long as I don't spend big $$$.) Thats why this forum exists! I can watch you (and others) spend the money doing what I someday hope to do some of.

Geno, My answer to you question is 4. I work on aircraft for a living and in my world 4 is the only answer unless you can find a break using a megger. Caution: always have electronic components disconnected at both ends of the harness when using a megger. Then if you must splice a wire it is always with a sealing splice. Clark

Steve i'll just through in my two cents about the electric. I understand that 100 amps is probably all you will ever need. You yourself said you weren't going to take any short cuts on the barn with the money your putting in it and the fact this is the last house your living in for a long time. With that said, I would have Tim do a cost analysts of the difference between the 100 and 200 amp services. If it's not crazy more money, I would go with the 200 amp just for possible future upgrades. If 5 years from now you do want to end up adding electric etc. you'll be glad you did. Remember, when you have 100 amps thats it. Just like a car if the speed limit is 55 then in theory thats all that the car should be able to do. But they make them able to go faster for a reason. You don't want to run at that speed all the time because you'd be running the engine at 100% for extended periods which will end in premature failure. Probably not the best analogy as I know you won't be running everything all at once but I'm sure you get my drift. I'm not an electrician but been around the block if you know what I mean. If it was me, and I was putting the amount of money you are into that project, then an extra $1000-$2000 wouldn't stop me from going with the 200 amp service. But then again, I would have a huge compressor, Bridgeport milling machine, lathe, some type of heating system, welder etc. If you don't do it now and need it later you'll regret you didn't. If you do need a bigger service later on, what a nightmare it will be! Again just my $0.02

Here is one of my commando 8 I was trying to sell it and nobody was interested I had it for sale for 250$ and I didn't even get a call on it so I decided to keep it I've been working on the deck and cleaning it up

Consider the 314 is a 14HP single cylinder engine. Granted those engines are real work horses, but it still what it is. The 417 is one of the best engines Kohler ever built in my estimation. Twin Cylinder and tough as nails. You said you need something that will be working hard. The Transmission in the 417-A is another very tough piece and will do all you ask of it. I've been around 78 years and seen a lot of deals. I have learned when to walk away. That's my Grandfatherly advise to you. Good luck on whatever you decide.

You sound like a youngster who walked into a new car showroom and just spotted a 1969 Mustang Fastback with 2000 miles on it and a 460 V8 full house engine. Don't be enamored with the glitter of that machine. The worth of something is always an individual thing. He will never sell it at that price. I don't see how a machine with over 345 hours on it can be flawless. Hour meters are cheap and used ones are available. I have at least four of them in my shop. A good car detailer can work wonders on anything with paint on it using a top grade polish and rubbing compound. All you have to do is a little research on this forum to find the how some of our members have worked wonders on an old machine. That 417-8 of Kens is one beautiful machine and I don't care how nice the other one is, if Ken owned it it is for all intents and purposes 100 percent better for everything you could possibly ask it to do that the other one. Worth more money to. As for the bagging of leaves, There are baggers available. In short, Don't buy it!

I bought a brand new 48"SD last year and it was the whole deck: blades, spindles, mule drive, belt, everything. They ain't cheap but they will last forever. Totally worth the purchase in my opinion.

I have a Sears (who ever make it) and have had good luck. I think I favor this type vs. the type that have caster wheels in the back. With this one, all the weight ends up on the drive wheels, so that has worked good for me. It even picks up small twigs and acorns! I did have to re-enforce the height adj. and hasn't bothered since. I would recommend this one, it has saved us a lot of work for the last few years.

I have a large blower for my D160 as well but have not yet familiarized myself with it. Just got the tractor back home from using it for the FEL at another house and have to swap to the blower to make sure everything hooks up and works. Never seen one of these put together so if you get yours setup please post some pics. I can take a look at mine tonight and check on that pulley size if Shuboxlover does not post it sometime today. What is the largest snow blower they made for the D series? For some reason I thought I remembered this one being a 56" though as I said, I have not familiarized myself with it yet. I bought a package of snow cab, chains, rear PTO assembly, mower deck, 4' plow and the snow blower for $300. That was a great deal and I hope to put the blower to use this winter if everything is there and working. I go in for surgery on my right arm tomorrow though and it will be in a cast for a couple of months so I may have trouble getting everything hooked up let alone any repairs or fabrication if needed. I can always use the 4' plow on the Wheelhorse and use my Allis with a snow blower though it would be a 32". I modded my D160 to foot control for forward/reverse. I need to get some more pictures of the setup to post it here but it works pretty well. I got the amount of throw just a little shorter than I wanted but it works out using the FEL because it never goes full speed using the foot control so you dont jump forward or backward hard. I integrated it with the hand control so to move faster you can nudge the hand control and for slow movement you use the foot control. Glad I did that mod earlier this year as I will not be able to use the hand control well with my arm in a cast.

Well said Steve. I understand completely what you have been after since day one on this project, a rustic experience found only up on the Ponderosa. Once you open that door and walk in you will be reminded of how they built things waaaayyy back in the day. I have been with Steve on many flea market pics, you have no idea the lengths he has gone to keep the look inside this barn vintage. Anyone can go out and purchase new lighting but Steve wants that look. The vintage drop fixtures he bought are going to look incredible and will be the correct look for inside his barn. I was there when he purchased his fixtures.. New lighting would have been much cheaper (and brighter) but its the look this guy is after... Sure, modern heaters hanging from the ceiling blowing warm air around will keep the place nice and warm but they will cloud up the ambiance.. I know a thing or two about a thing or two when it comes to electricity. I worked for my families electrical business for 6 yrs, we wired Steve's house well over twenty yrs. ago. In fact I believe our name is still on the electrical panel inside his house.. I named Steve's place the Ponderosa way back over 20 yrs. ago. I can remember I was roughing in the wiring with my brother's. We sat down to have our lunch over looking the back yard on a couple of 5 gallon buckets. I can remember it being a gorgeous, peaceful day . We were enjoying the view of the rolling hills and a farmer cutting down the grass in one of the fields in the distance with an old Farmall Cub.. I told my brother's for some reason this place reminds me of the Ponderosa on the old TV show Bonanza. One laughed and one snickered but they both said, yeah it does... Anywho, I can be there on Saturday. If Tim and Todd need a hand I can help there to. I have a few 12 ft Step ladders and a roll around Hi-Jacker lift at work that might come in handy??

Aaron Don't use solder. No matter how good you are at it, solder won't hold up in this environment. And don't connect those two wires and tie them into one. By doing this you are asking that single wire to carry the load of the other two in tandem. By doing this you are creating an unwanted Fuse Link. The single wire will act like a fuse and, get hot and blow just like a regular fuse because it is carrying too much amperage. My best advice to you is to use good marine grade crimping connectors. If the wires are to short then using connectors lengthen them. I don't know why you can't get enough wire from that string to do this. I never had that trouble. Look around to where the bundle is attached to the frame. you might have to free it up some.

I told Cole you have one just like it, but yours is nicer. My wife had to drag me to the car show. I no longer like going because I hate to just look. I miss the days of rollin into a car show with my 69 SS Chevelle.....

Due to some heath issues the wife & I are making changes to our haulers. The object was to be able to eat & sleep with out unloading tractors. So we found a box van to haul the tractors & took our 12 ft trailer to a place where the customize trailers. We just got home checking out the progress & was so happy I'm making this post.
