Classic study in human nature. I guess it depends what side of the cash register you sit on. Buyer screams foul when he pays seller $20 for a $2 part or service which buyer could have made / performed / located by himself. Vendors proclaim commitment to the hobby when they sell something for $20 that was made for $2. Guess the best bargain on the site is .......... me. Troubleshooting advice is always 100% free - for now anyways. World keeps turning .........................

Just brought home another load, a load of pallet racks to put Horses and Horse stuff on. 12,000 lbs per shelf rating should do it. Now I need a small electric walk behind forklift. If you guys want to organize and make more space this should do it. Got it all from a Surplus place in Indiana really cheap.

FWIW - I was looking for an answer to this question a while back but came up with my own solution. I motorized the chute on my 523dxi blower with a GM window motor. It took awhile to figure out how to connect it to the star drive on the motor. I ended up using a twelve point socket and a short 3/8 extension to connect it to the rotator rod. It works great and is easily removable. I drilled a hole through the socket extension to clip it through the rod. Hope this can someone looking to do the same. I had some requests for more photos

Grade 5 will be fine... truthfully, Grade 2 (common zinc coated cheap bolts) are fine for most of the bolts in these tractors. The grading is the hardness of the bolt... what it's going to take to break it or shear it off. Most of the bolts on these tractors are just holding stuff together with very little shear forces in play. Using Grade 8 or 9 is a waste of money. Remember, the harder a bolt is, the more brittle it is.

My local Lowe's has a fairly decent stock of stainless steel nuts and bolts now, but price checking yesterday for five 3/8-16 x 1" carriage bolts for my snow plow, and they were $1.05 each plus $.30 for a washer and $.85 for a lock nut. Same products from Boltdepot.com would have cost about $.75 for everything.

Hmm, how much is a bag of squirrel feed these days? We better get stocked up before the price increase.

there are other ways of getting oem parts and not paying those prices. for example the headlight is just a GE 4411-1 sealed beam. the Onan spark plug wires are still available new under an Onan part number for half that price if i remember correctly. (even that was too much for a basic plug wire......) research is your key here, this forum is a wealth of info with some searching, and the internet is full of oem parts with some searching too. most of the time the original equipment supplier still has their part number on the part and you can find sometimes the parts are still being manufactured.....

I consider it a miracle in today's world to be able to find original parts for a 24 year old tractor from a long out of the Wheel Horse business company. If Wheel Horse had not sold out and remained in business, many more parts would still be available. What gets me though is the fact that this dealer had a NOS part collecting dust on the shelf. He probably only paid about 10 cents on the dollar when he bought it, and now he has the nerve to try to sell it at highway robbery prices. Just my 2 cents worth.

So... it has been less than a week since my brother and i pulled off our trade of my C-161 for his 417-8. Today I was SUPPOSED to be just sneakin out of work for an hour or so to take a look at a 520 Steve might be puting on the block and to check out THE BARN. Little did I know that a Block Buster was about to take place. Here is a little history on what a Block Buster is according to my brother and myself. It is when there is a creative swap with MANYplayers involved to even things up. I walked away with a 520 and a nice 1958 18 hp Johnson.. Steve got himself a MINT 1957 18 hp Evinrude, a very nice 42 inch rear discharge deck, some outboard repair work on two of his outboards and a little cash on top.. (I hope I haven't forgotten any details?) Keep in mind we put this all together in less than 15 minutes! Now that is how its done! The 520 I walked away with is on the right less the deck and leaf vac that Steve is keeping. Its funny because the 520 on the left was mine that Steve got in our very first Block Buster deal. I have wanted another 520 since giving that one up, nothing can push the snow like a 520.. This 520 will probably get a nice worker refurb..

Today was a really good day. We were able to get all the framing in less the rafters. They are all loaded up on the top of the framing ready to be installed. They will be back on Monday. Jeff and Ken both stopped over today. Jeff had the day off so he hung around and helped out. Ken came over on his lunch break and we did a little tradin' I will post pics of what I got on my end in another thread. Here are the pics of where we stand as of tonight. The first pic shows Jeff (Fireman) up helping set one of the last beams in place.

Hey Frank...at least he stopped and asked about it. We horse hunters have been doing that for years...looking down tree lines...along houses and barns. The difference...we stop and ask. It was probably Geno that stopped.

I've had a "round nose" WH parked on my driveway most of the summer (702)...a couple weeks ago a guy from "inter-city" KC pulled in and said he had been watchin' that ole lawn mower and wondered if I was going to throw it away...needless to say I jotted his lic # as he drove away (without the WH) but he got a piece of my mind!!

Hi All, My grandpa bought this 1972 Wheel Horse Commando 800 Special brand new. He used it to mow his yard and move snow in the winter up until probably 15-16 years ago when my parents acquired it from him. They used it until about 10 years ago when it developed some issues (I’ll get to those later) after a rebuild. Now, it’s my turn to play with this old beast. My wife and I just bought a house and we needed a lawnmower and snow mover. Best part, this one was free. It needs some love and work but that’s ok. I bought the snow blade yesterday because it was a good deal and I figured if I have a push blade and a snow blower that means I can start looking for another tractor to run the blower It has a few issues, maybe I need to post those in the engine area, but overall I like this little machine. It seems fairly simple and easy to work on. First issue is with the throttle and I think is causing the second issue. When I move the throttle lever the cable housing moves a bit and then starts to move the cable. It’s hard to describe so I have a few pictures. Second issue is there is no throttle control besides idle and wide open. I think this is all being caused by the throttle cable issue above. I can manually move the lever on the carb and it’ll go whatever speed I ask it to. Even Ellie approves Serial Tag: Engine: Throttle cable issue (coiled housing moves): Gas tank hold down? I feel like there should be more parts here that aren't wire... Couple more questions, what is a good place to get a new seat for these? Mine is weathered and cracked. Not very comfy on the butt Is there a preferred vender or a list of vendors that have a good reputation or am I better off going to a place like Mills Fleet Farm for parts and things? I’m new to this whole Wheel Horse game and want to get this thing going well before the snow flies ïŠ Thanks in advance for the help.

No worries KC9. There's lots of that racking to go around and with that loaded up he couldn't rustle more Horses. That's some nice stuff Geno. I'm also looking forward to see it up and loaded. You sure do things up right. Just watch. Now he'll paint it.

Thank you all for your overwhelming response to the video. I must apologize though. During my flurry to put something together for all of you, I accidentally entered the copyright zone in my choice of music and the video is blocked on most phones. Sorry. I guess giving credits in the video is no longer good enough! Lesson learned! Maybe a reformat when I get time. Take a look at what I woke up today to! Vegas Baby

Not sure about 3 treckies, but once i originally built the belt system linked them all together, it was then I found out the it was not gonna start. Starting 3 small engines was way too much to start with the rope pull or even pulling on 2 of the rope pulls at once. It was neccesary to get one engine(pony motor) to start, then engage a lever to start the other 2. The one 5hp engine does struggle for a bit to start the other 2. Once I finish this tractor, I will have a electric start to start the pony motor, which will them sart the other 2. so starting is alittle bit of a process, but seems to work just fine so far

Dealer purchases, last resort. NAPA, TSC, salvage yard, all have pricing well below dealers. Can't stand parts lists that read in part, "Bolt, TORO P/N 000000." Or, "Nut, TORO P/N 000000." Ridiculous pricing! Hardware store for those items too!

Hydro's tend to crack the frame flange more than the 8 speeds. Other than that, if you are asking about durability, the 8 speed, sunstrand, and eaton 1100 are all great. The eaton 700 I personally would only want to own if it was purchased new. To many people do not change fluid often, or at all, and the 700 model will fail.

I have been looking non stop and guess what, I found one that I can restore. It's a model 854, it runs and is complete. Its in Missouri and I'm heading out early tomorrow morning to pick up this bad boy. I'll post photos when I get it home.

Any WH hydro speed control lever should stay where you put it keeping the speed maintained at that point. You do not need to keep a hand on the speed control stick. There are old tractors out there that have worn bushings that make it necessary to keep re-adjusting the speed but that is not how they should work.

Not a wire wheel, it was actually a piece of 1/4" wide x 15 ft metal snake used to pull and snake wires through ceilings and walls. As I was pulling the wires, I found a length of string in the ceiling so I tied the snake on to that and pulled from the other end of the string. When it was close to coming back out, the wires broke loose from the other end of the snake and it came flying into my eye. The snake has some weight to it so all that moving force was stopped with my eyeball. I'm also one of those idiots who don't wear eye protection as much as I should. I've had quite a few things in them that needed a doctor to remove, not to mention all the numerous eye washes to get things out too. Maybe I learned my lesson this time!

My wife had a garden there until about 10 yrs. ago. She moved it out front because our beagle kept stealing her tomatoes and the lab stole the zucchini!
