John...I have given this a lot of thought. There are no doughnuts for second place, they are in the basement. Since I can't lose the IOWA game this week, I have had to look at other alternatives. Here is a picture of the guy that ended up in the basement last year (he knows who he is)...he looks happy and content.

I have been a member for a few years and have enjoyed reading other posts and info. I had a GT-14 given to me last week which is my first Wheel Horse (a brand not common here in northern MN). The GT is a 1970 model 1-7451 serial # 630763 with a 48" deck and a 30" snowblower. Also, all the tires say Wheel Horse on them. The GT has been in the woods for 5-8 yrs. But after changing oil & putting in a battery, got spark and with a shot of ether it fired. Now I am cleaning carb. & gas tank. Pictures are on arrival at my shop. I think it will be a Winter project with many questions to follow.

Yes, thank you, just created an account for this WH site. Really great site from what i have been looking at and reading to answer some questions, My brother got the tractor in the late 80's Started to restore it, and never finished, so it has been sitting arounfd for a very long time until last year. This 400 was a year long build,. Sometimes progress was minor and even slow, to leaps forwards in progress. Parts list, 3-5 hp Industial series briggs engines( picked briggs, for fit, easy to get parts, and easily modifyable, these engines are drag raced, so i have the option to go very radical) Troy Built pony tiller electric start system, 3-plumbling chrome fittings for the exaust, 3 chrome air cleaners, 3 thecumseh H50 carbs, 1 fuel pump operated from the crankcase pressure, 1- triple snowmobile trottle sysem, 1 john deere belt gaurd/ elevator sheet metal, 8 pulleys, 3 idol pulleys, made the battary box and used a motorcyle battary for the small space i had left under the seat that was not taken up by the gas tank/ seat bracket, and belt gaurd , made and mounted the steering system on top the middle engines's L head offset the steering shaft. Deck lever(shortend to fit under air cleaner and remade bracket), reworked clutch/brake pedal, wider tires for the back, 5" ones for the front. and many more hours with metal brackets, intakes manifolds , air cleaner mounts. overall i just got it running and driving late spring of this year, I still have to finish it, just not now, maybe next year,, but painting, will not be an option, i kept it as gotten condition and i wanted a Ratrod themed tractor, lot of work just to get it to this point, a lot of EBAY parts since my brother lost a decent amount of the parts he took off

A friend stopped by, found in a barn, new in a box a couple of items. He thought I might be interested, Wow! Of course I love gifts! A deck discharge chute, doesn't fit my 48" SD's but, I'll put it away for someone. Have a mule drive for the newly picked up Work Horse but, the newer drive looks good. I needed it too, of course I love gifts.

Picked this one up a couple weeks ago at mentone from Brrly. Finally got it complete and running today. First tore it apart and power washed everything. Went through the drive system, and had to change some gaskets on the engine, and rebuild the carb. Runs pretty good now. In pretty decent original shape. Plan to leave this one as is, just straighten out the hood a little more and possibly some new decals.Still needs a few little things here and there, but is ready to take to Scotts Meet and greet this weekend.

So, here we are, on the floor at last. Tomorrow I will start finishing the engine. I need too paint the muffler and put the tins on. I also must try to paint the hood grill black if the weather holds. I really want to get that done so I can let it harden before I put it on the tractor. I was tempted to put the seat pan on to see what it looked like but I decided to wait for the grill and the rest of the dash panels and put the decals on everything at one time. Yesterday I bought two more sets of decals from Terry. He really does a great job on them. I really have to get some tires for this thing. These are the ones that came with it and they go flat almost as soon as I fill them

I found them at Allied Electronics. Looks like an exact replacement. Order a couple of extras and five switch caps. The caps seem to fall of as I have two without them. I checked the Dell City catalog but could not find any in there. These are Eaton switches same as the one that was on the tractor. I also ordered a supply of molex pins today on EBay. Have some connectors I want to refresh with new pins before I button up this project.

Had our last pull for the year. Started at 11am Sat and last hook down the track at 7:40pm Sunday started at 10am with last hook at 6:10 pm. 152 hooks on Sat and 162 on Sunday, Had to strap flash lights on hoods Sat night or else you couldn't see where you were going, Tiring weekend but a load of fun we had pullers from 4 states for this one. Longest run 368ft @ 26mph for a 4cyl modified. Some of the pullers didn't get most of them battery went dead in the camera

Well, 1 step closer, to being ready...... Took the deck off and put the snow blower on... Took it over to my neighbor’s house so we could prep it before real cold weather hits. Set the height on the skids, readjusted the chain. Lubed chain. If anyone remembers my dilemma from last year with the belt being torn up. A little earlier in the year I was able to find a broken weld on the inside bearing housing. It is welded, but still seems to want to wobble a bit. Not much, but just enough that it has me wondering...... Anyway, also trued the main pulley 1 more time, to make sure the "on and off" angle of the belt was evenly split. Once all that was done, I dropped the blower again, pressure washed the deck before I put it back on. Hit all the zerts on the tractor and mower and re-attached the deck....BTW, maybe just me, but after 2 years I have finally found a simple way to re-attach the deck..... Call me just a little slow...... My issue had always been the front attachment bar. I would try and get that attached first.... I would always have issues getting it just right and then tripping the lever to release the clamps to hold it in place.... Then I would attach the lift arms.... Well, dummy me, got the idea to attach the lift arms first, then raise the lift arms, and what do you think happens when you raise the lift arms? It also raises the front bar that fits nice and neat, right into the front attachment.... Genius idea ROB! Takes all of 30 seconds to complete these steps now where it use to take me anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes……

If you are getting no flow of gas from the glass bowl when you disconnect the inlet tube from the pump, another pump probably isn't going to help. You need to find out why the gas is not flowing out of the tank by gravity

Paint the deck yellow, sell it to the Deere guy's and you'd have a free D 250

That tractor has been around for a while. Very cool indeed. I always thought it would have a bit more appeal though with era correct motors - Kohlers or Clintons.

I think as long as you show her evidence/proof of how much the wheel horse maintenence items cost (pulleys, belts, TIME to replace, etc), she will be with you on spending the fraction of the cost on the old mower vs the new mower. She probably doesn't care what you cut the yard with. She just doesn't want to have unexpected expenses associated with an old machine. Again, showing her that the expected "unexpected" expenses are less than the big box store tractor's initial cost is important.

Honey crisps are not apples that are left hanging on trees after the pickers go through...and those trees are hidden pretty good...Although they are very juicey and would give a better ratio......all these apples were gleaned....how is that for cheap....mostly yellows....The orchard guys let you glean if asked...well it helps to know them.... Sent from where I am.......

Here is some ammo.................you yourself won't spend anywhere near 1200 bucks getting your 520 repaired but she wants you to spend 1200 bucks for a junk tractor that will last 3 to 5 years before it looses an engine or transmission. (6 to 8 years with good maintenance). I'll also guarantee that as soon as the warranty is up on that cheap tractor, (One Year), you'll be repairing more than pulleys. Show her the weight difference of each tractor and the weight difference of the mower deck. Show her how thin and cheaply made the MTD's are. Show her all the plastic that will fade, break or crack in a short amount of time. Show her what attachments fit your 520 verses the little pieces of tin that go with the MTD models. Show her an MTD owners forum online and let her read all the nightmares those owners post. Tell her the MTD's are for very light yard work and are nothing more than lawn mowers. Tell her how they keep changing the model years and designs where as your wheel horse from the 1990's takes attachments by Wheelhorse that were made in the 1970's clear through the middle 2000's. Or you could tell her that it is just plain cool to own a WH tractor because "IT IS OLD" and it was "MADE IN THE USA" back when quality really meant something. (And another thing I would do is not tell her when things break on your 520).

All the Horses love snow, plow, plow, plow. 416-8 and 414-8 aren't set up but, here's how they'll look.....shortly. The 520-8 will be setup too. For what? Grandsons love snow too ya know!

Everything is back to perfect. I should have taken a picture but did not. The end of the shift rod and ball were perfect. No chunks missing or nothing deformed. Here is a picture of my brother test drive. BIG THANKS FELLAS! A good lesson learned. Glenn

The savings you will be able to offer will not be felt in the quality of the tire..

These guys are on top of your problem. Once you back out that "dog point set screw" enough to pull out the shifter...look in the hole. You will see the 2 shift forks...one of them is going to be pushed to one side...when the trans is in neutral, you will see them matched up and facing each other...a square. Use a long screw driver to shift the one shift fork that is in gear until you see that square. Post a picture if you want and one of your shifter so we can see if that is the problem. When you get the forks lined up, you can replace the shifter. The doughnut on the shifter has a hole towards the front...the dog point set screw has a point on it that goes into this hole and keeps the shifter in place but still allows you to work the shifter. You want to snug the set screw until the shifter ball is tight and then back it off about 1/4 to 1/2 turn. The shifter should move freely, but not feel sloppy. Once you get it where you want it...tighten the lock nut to hold the set screw in place. Boom-sha-ka-la-ka!! I have cut the end of an allen wrench so it is easier to work with...but the best way is like Brian said (from under the stand with a longer wrench). Home Depot, ACE or any hardware store would carry them...and you only have to buy the one you need. The correct size is 1/8".
  46. 1 point
you can reach the set screw from under the hood stand if you have a allen wrench about 6" long Brian

Something here should work. Can't wait to see what that little Sears iron 2 wheeler will do. The new 520 w/ heated cab will be my go to machine on cold days. The Yammy 4wheeler is for clean up on warm days. The C-125 is the back up blower. Of course the two long handles always work.

They sure did !! We were 2-3 inches low on the gravel so a few bucks more and now I have a 6-8" slab instead of a 4" ....
