2 pointsVery Fortunate today to purchase a one owner machine from a very nice gentleman. When I asked about the white walls he said I was a kid this was my hot rod so I painted them. Anyway just thought I'd share and show the pretty rare cart off a little

2 pointsIt has 68 decals and a 3 spoke steering wheel. I think it may be a 1968 . great little tractors. A 68 lawn ranger was my first wheel horse.
-
2 pointsWell she's done. All new paint and decals. Did a conversion from an electric clutch to a Manuel clutch(310-8 donor). Had the deck hooked up and cutting, and wanna hook up the snow blade soon! Thanks for all the help. Into the lawn ranger! Ps the tractor is red, not orange I promise haha

2 pointsI used my Lawn Ranger years ago to clean out the tank of a generator I was rehabbing. Made a frame out of 2x4s bolted to the rear hub and the 5 gallon generator tank. jacked up the Rangers rear end and let it run in 2nd gear for a awhilee and then reverse.... Then used the Eastwood system to finish the job.

2 pointsWonder what the neighbors will say about us now AJ mowing with a fuel tank duck taped to the wheel?

2 pointsThis is one of my first rides on the Iron Horse, summer of 1978. Needless to say, I would have many more hours of seat time on this tractor over the next 35 years! Now my boys get to drive, help restore, and hopefully show, the same tractor I grew up working on! Sorry for the quality of the pics but these are all copies of slides that my parents have and there are more where those came from but I have to run now! (Bonus points for anyone who correctly guesses the year make and model of the yellow truck behind us!!!)

2 pointsHe means the tank has a taller than average fill neck due to it having to come up through the hood. I wouldn't bother with the Red Kote for this... (and I've used it) You can probably buy another already clean used tank for the same money you'll spend on that.... definitely if you're buying that and the evaporust. Besides... that's only really necessary if your tank has actual rusted through holes. If your tractor's condition is any indication, you just need to clean the tank. I tried evaporust... it was not that effective for me. I probably just should have left it sit longer. I've had much better results with drenching it in rust penatrant and putting some abrasives (like roofing nails and sand) in the tank, tape sealing it shut and strapping it to the wheel of another tractor while mowing the lawn. The spinning and abrasives ratting around inside clean it right up.

2 pointsCondenser wire (the one from the barrel shaped thing!) goes to the positive. Only the black wire from the ignition module goes to the negative post on the coil. Don't ever connect the black from the module to the positive of the coil, you will damage the module. Three wires to the positive, red from module, yellow 12 volts and black condenser wire. One wire to the negative, the black from module..... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

2 pointsThe tanks long neck makes it a bit unique. Clean out isn't hard. Remove tank and outlet fitting. Tri Sodium Phosphate and hot water (or purple power or the like) and a few rocks. Then just slosh it around. Rinse well and then put in some Acetone and swill it around. (acetone will absorb left over water to preclude rusting. There are various coatings you can buy for gas tanks check you r auto parts store.

2 pointsGeno I would seriously consider sacrificing body parts to have a shop like that. My hat is off to you

1 pointI'm new to the Wheel Horse forum and am excited to tap into the wealth of knowledge available here. I recently bought my first wheel horse from a friend who's father had bought it new. It is a 1968 Lawn Ranger. The one problem I have run across so far is the gas tank was left sitting with gas in it for years and now it is full of gunk and rust. Is there any way to find replacement tanks? Is there a good way of cleaning them out? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks from Missouri

1 pointGot to meet RFWHorse and his lovely wife yesterday and brought home all of his Wheel Horse stuff. He had an Onan and was fed up with it and shed his stable of Horses and attachments. I'm confident that one day he will get a good one with a Kohler (and a lot less wires) and rekindle his love for Horses. The 520 has one of the sweetest sounding engines I've ever heard but needs a lot of wiring work, the deck is solid with no rust, has some new bearings and new blades. The 518 is the quietest one, but it has no motor he he, also got another 50" mid mount grader, front deck carrier, extra rear wheels + tires, and some new parts, oil filter, misc small stuff. They're getting cleaned up now and will have more pics hopefully later this afternoon.

1 pointthe main thing about any of these additives is well, the additives... anything that helps reduce heat break dowm in an air cooled engine is a plus, provided you run it long enough in the heat to make a difference. that is the biggest benefit of synthetics as well. it better resists viscosity loss when it gets hot. How many people run a garden tractor long enough, and in hot enough conditions to get it hot? not very many of us do. If you do, definitely use a product that will help it survive, additives DO help in these conditions. Synthetic oil, full synthetic or blends help alot. we really don't have to worry about the gearbox do we? ever felt it even get warm to the touch? changing the fluids regularly is critical in the run it for a while and put it away for a week routine. it gets warm and cools off over and over and over. It picks up condensation, dirt, dust, metal shavings etc. Better to change it regularly and spend less than go with the high dollar stuff. Of course, if it makes you feel better, use the high dollar stuff, but change it regularly anyway. anyone want to see the 290k mi. ORIGINAL 5.2 v-8 in my jeep? never had more than the valve covers off (the gaskets were leaking) no snake oil in it. just valvoline and regular changes.

1 pointSorry if I missed it in the reading but is there 12 volts at the pos side of the coil with the key on and has it been checked with a test light also, not just a multi meter?
-
1 pointIt was a little tractor but as you guys know, these things will do way more than their size indicates... That Sundstrand hydro (as I understand it) in the first ever true hydrostatic GT(by a few months anyway, just beating out the Cub and JD introductions) was an awesome combo and capable of so much more than they first thought...
-
1 pointAbsolutely run an inline filter... they're cheap PM. (Preventive Maintenance) You just never know what junk ends up in your gas can. As for rust stuff... just your average PB Blaster or Kroil. Heck for cleaning WD-40 will work if thats what you have handy. ... although that's not a true rust penetrant. Via Tapatalk 4

1 pointHey Guys, thanks for the warm welcome already! Back by my home computer for a few moments and so... This is a slide of my mom cutting the lawn with it in about 1978. Love that plaid mom! You gotta love slides (a quick observation will note that I accidently ran this one backwards on the convertor and so everything is a mirror image of what it should be!!!). It has the timed rear discharge deck and dad worked as a service technician for an IH farm implement dealer in those days and so it has a Farmall Cub muffler on it. Had a straight pipe when he first got it and I think he was starting to go deaf! :eusa-doh:More pics to follow..

1 pointI was looking at a less invasive method to start with... as for the carb cleaner/brake cleaner reference, remove the tank, remove the cap, remove the shut off, spay until it comes out clean and then inspect with a flashlight. it should come up mostly clean. I am asuming the tank itself is a healthy one, no rust holes, just gunk inside. if you have holes I am sure you can find a new tank, which would be alot easier than trying to repair the old one hope this helps.

1 pointOh, man... make sure the safety locks are both engaged on that rotary, and make absolutely sure you check at least 3x that nothing is in the way before you lower it. I saw a guy drop a mid late 80's LTD on another car next to it when he forgot to move a post jack before lowering... almost got my tool box!

1 pointWelcome to ! "Wealth of knowledge" is an understatement.. Nice little tractor you got there!

1 pointSharp looking Lawn Ranger! I moved your post out of the gallery section to the main forum so you can get your question answered... (there are no comments allowed in the gallery) Tank can easily be cleaned. You just have to put the time and effort into it.

1 pointWell, this will undoubtedly bring up an unpleasant memory for a certain player of the Dino persuasion.. Stevasaurus's all time worst pigskin pick..
-
1 pointYou guys got it all wrong on how to pick em. I tried this outfit first.. and if that don't work I'll go back to my dartboard.

1 pointScott, you know your show (concerning the weather) has never been for the faint of heart. That is why Lars has not been there yet...he is into REAL WEATHER and the Midnight Sun. The tea leaves in my cup tell me a gorgeous day in the low 70's with Wisconsiney Clouds that are excellent for pictures. Yah Right...
