6 pointsOne of our members here, NorthForker was getting rid of his 312-8, so I loaded up the kids and took a nice scenic road trip to Long Island. I have to tell you, this was my first time in this area of LI and I have to say it's really nice. Beautiful farms, great farm stands and just lovely countryside PLUS the ocean is just minutes away! The machine is in great shape, everything is tight. There's an engine vibration which needs to be addressed. When running, the PTO will wobble, when I engage it it smoothes considerably, but there's still a vibration. I am not sure if it's an engine bearing, the PTO or drive pulley. I took the PTO Bell off and that is in perfect condition, but I didn't remove the clutch or race to check the condition of the drive pulley. I have already cleaned it so it actually looks quite nice, the black on the hood could use a touch up and of course some decals from Terry! In the mean time, I'll be continuing to check that vibration and decide what the final disposition will be, it starts up beautifully, so I hope it's easily fixable. So here it is, a 1995 312-8

3 pointsStarted working on the RJ I got at the show. (Who doesn't like working on show tractors?) Haven't done a lot to it "since" I got it home. It needed the correct hitch (had a full size tractor hitch held on with a 5/16" bolt) no lift linkage, red overspray all over ect. I only drove it during the parade. It was noisy when letting out the clutch but at the show there is so much noise it was hard to pinpoint. Rigged up a hitch and cable with a collection of parts I got from J-Dog and used a 5/16" brake line for conduit. REmove the plastic on/off switch that was half red and installed a nice toggle as well as got rid of the yellow wire nut. Replaced the wrong spark plug and crappy plug wire end. Added some stainless hardware for some eye appeal. I was worried about the trans. It rattled like gears grinding when letting out the clutch. So I drained the old gear oil. It was black but no water or metal shavings. filled it with a 50/50 mix of 90 and diesel. And took it for a ride. Drained the oil and replaced it as well as changed the engine oil as well. I hear the rattle in the belt guard so I need to look into that but the trans sounds fine. Also the exhaust loosened up and getting it tight enough put the muffler into the gas tank. Looks like a conduit nut is in order there Pics and video. I didn't think about the video until I was halfway into it. I managed a shot of a burned out house that's being torn down plus a quick look at the new Horse Hauler Tundra

3 pointsThe 24th of May, 1974 was the day AMC took over. So, I would think the last true "Wheel Horse" must be a model from the '74 line up.

3 pointsI wanted to say a big "Thank You" to everyone who helped Terry at the big show in PA. Thank you for all the prayers from so many, my family and I deeply appreciate all of you. My dad is currently holding his own, he has good and bad days. He is the greatest man in the world, I have been very blessed to have him as my dad, he will be 82 in Oct. We take everyday as a blessing. Everyday that I can hold his hand and tell him how much I love him is a gift..... You are all the greatest people, I haven't got to meet a lot of you. Maybe I will get to meet you next year at the big show. I know we have a tough road ahead of us. But with all the prayers from so many wonderful people I know we can get through it. God Bless everyone of you!!!!! Lola Dennis & Family

2 pointsExcellent pictures Niel...guess what.??..it is still raining on the East Coast...they want you to come back.
-
2 pointsSeriously, first check your shifter...if it is sloppy, it just may be a matter of snugging up the dog point set screw and lock nut. With those low hours and lack of information...like did you buy the horse new, did you just get this...I do not want to sit here and just guess what it might be. If those hours are correct, it is not likely an internal issue...unless you are shifting it on the fly all the time and grinding gears.

2 pointsWhat size deck do you run or what is the model # of it? ... 36, 42, or 48" wide. That determines what belt is needed. Whatever the length, I would URGE you to NOT buy an after-market belt. It will NOT fit right and result in premature failure. Once you determine what size deck you have, call a Toro dealer for the correct belt. The OEM belt is a few bux more, but well worth the money.

1 pointI was pulling some metal building steel to the back of my property when I heard the axle bearing protesting. I don't hear that well so I decided to change them. That went real well, but the belt came of the drive pulley while I had the trans/axle out. Removed the belt guard and found the top belt guide bent up at a 45 degree angle. Knocked it back down and cracked it so I took off the bracket and welded it. While I had it apart decided to fix the warped foot boards. They were bent down in the middle and gave ever time I stepped on them. I beat them back straight on an anvil with a rubber tire changing hammer to keep from damaging them. Then spot welded a 3/8" steel rod under the lip. They don't give now when I step on them. Will look a lot better when I get them clean up and and painted. I went ahead and put it back together to try out the new axle bearings.

1 pointSo one of the things that I have been searching for besides a loader, is a snow cab. After snow blowing this year and looking like frosty . Then watching horse fixer in his Tim the tool man Taylor snow chucker..... I knew I needed to have one. So , I searched everywhere and coming up empty, I finally struck gold at the show. I came up to the show early Saturday and sitting in one of the pavilions was a snow cab. I was surprised it had not been sucked up for the price. It was a little dirty/moldy. I also was unsure if it was missing any frame parts. The big problem is the missing door. So tonight I drug out the power washer and mean green. I scrubbed away with a brush , rinsed and repeat. To my surprised , it came out looking like new. There are no rips and the vinyl is still very soft. I then moved to the frame. A few pieces are a little rusty but will clean up nice. I was missing two pieces. The support off the dash and the piece that goes from the inner foot rest to the inner windshield mount. So I started bending up some steal and got this far tonight. I think once painted , no one will know it was not original. So all in all , had fun for the few hours I was at the show. Got to meet up with Bill Jenkins for a little , and meet Matt with the hydro pedal. Very nice guy. Got a few things I needed. I put up a wanted add, I am hoping someone out there might have a left side door for sale. Maybe someone with a beat up cab but the door is savable. If not , I will try and make one but its not ideal. Anyone know if I can still buy a door? PS , I would love to have a way to identify some of you guys at the show. I feel weird walking up and saying , Hey , is that you.... lol Kyle

1 pointif you buy an after market kohler or get a tractor with one in it ( a blue kohler ) be very careful and replace the starter bolts. i had one blow out and strip the threads. mind you the bolts only went into the first 2 or 3 threads. factory mistake. i put new longer bolts in and all is good.

1 pointI just love the picture of Carolyn, in the 15th pic in the 1st set, sitting there with her head on her fist...it is like she is asking "what have I gotten myself into". Excellent pictures mate...about time you showed some of the food. We have enough good places to go for 5 or 6 days next year. We did eat very good!! I give this thread five stars...***** The picture with Bob Maynard trying to get close enough to read the screen is priceless...it is like there was a magnet pulling his head in to the computer...it was going to suck him in.

1 pointI cut two rubber strips from a bicycle inner tube and stretched them over the metal pieces that press against the nylon block that the lever moves and now the lever stays in position. I was able to ride the tractor around for 10 or 15 minutes and even cut some grass.
-
1 pointI think a lot of dealers added them aftermarket, as I have seen many with them

1 pointI've shimmed three of my tractors spindles and steering blocks. I cut my own with shim stock and a shim punch set. Did I mention I work in a tool and die shop. Nothing feels better than slop free steering. Craig

1 pointKinda my inspiration just made with a tractor. Make sense? I have always loved the 32-34 ford streetrods, especially the bonneville salt flats cars.
-
1 pointDon't know 'bout thrust washers (see my earlier post) but, I use Lowes hardware. Stainless steel bolts, stainless locking nuts and always Never-Seeze° or ThreadLocker on the threads. Almost all my hardware is stainless. I throw the rusty bolts in a large coffee can with oil, and a lid. Saving for a day just in case.

1 pointthat would have been the stig, or Ian as you may know him anyway, good looking rig you got there, i've been looking for somethink like that or maybe make my own( not sure if it is cheaper to make one or adapt one) Koen
-
1 pointI like the looks of those. The rear fenders make it look like a mini farm tractor, plus I really like the combo of gear drive with hydro lift. That's my ideal combination.
-
1 pointI've done a build thread, here's the final finished diff with locker. Just the selector to finish, it's a tight squeeze in there with only an inch to fit everything in.
-
1 pointProgress so far. I have to figure out how to correct the LH side so that the roller will be straight.
-
1 pointBy the way gulftane, your work is looking great. Can't wait to see it done. We could have it as the featured tractor at the first annual Florida meet and greet.
